Minor League Wrap--August 20
First, a correction. I've been counting down the Iowa Cubs magic number to clinch the PCL American North division for the past few days. But I made a mistake in counting the number of remaining games. Instead of actually counting them (which I did today) I simply subtracted the number of games played from the number of games scheduled. But what I didn't realize is that both the I-Cubs and the Memphis Redbirds have a game that was cancelled because of weather that won't be made up. This being the minor leagues, it's not "will be made up if necessary" for such games. They're just not going to play them, even if it would affect the outcome of the pennant race. Therefore, the magic number for the I-Cubs to clinch was one fewer yesterday, at six rather than seven. Actually, it might even be one less than that, since if two teams tie for the title in the minors, they don't have a one-game playoff like in the majors. They just use a tiebreaker, and I don't know if Iowa or Memphis would come out ahead in a tie.
Also, I don't want to repeat what was said in yesterday's comments, but I suggest reading the comments from yesterday if you want to know Baseball Prospectus' Kevin Goldstein's opinion of Jay Jackson and Josh Vitters. (It's good, folks.) Also, some bad news relating to the suspension of Mark Pawelek that the Cubs aren't calling a suspension. But that's what it apparently is. I suppose he still gets paid.
Iowa Cubs
The I-Cubs lost their second game in a row and fell to the Oklahoma RedHawks, 8-5.
Starter Mike Burns had a rough night, as he allowed seven runs on ten hits over five innings. Two of the hits were home runs. Burns walked one and struck out five.
First baseman Micah Hoffpauir was 3 for 5 with a double and a run scored. Hoffpauir is now hitting .370 in AAA this season.
Right fielder Josh Kroeger was 2 for 5 with his 14th home run, a second-inning solo shot. Kroeger had two RBI total and stole his tenth base. Second baseman Bobby Scales went back-to-back with Kroeger in the second inning with his 15th homer. Scales went 1 for 3 with a walk.
Third baseman Casey McGehee had a 2 for 5 night with an RBI.
However, the Memphis Redbirds also lost tonight, so the I-Cubs magic number to clinch now stands at five.
Tennessee Smokies
The Smokies banged out 14 hits tonight, but still lost to the Montgomery Biscuits, 6-4.
Starter Grant Johnson took the loss. Johnson lasted only 3.2 innings and allowed three runs on five hits and four walks. Johnson struck out two.
Ed Campusano allowed three runs in an inning and a third. Dumas Garcia had three innings of scoreless relief.
Left fielder Tyler Colvin was 2 for 5 with his 14th home run. It was a two-run blast in the fourth inning. Right fielder Doug Deeds went 3 for 5 with a solo home run. It was Deeds' 11th home run on the season. Deeds also scored twice.
Center fielder Sam Fuld was 2 for 4 with a walk. DH Kyle Reynolds and third baseman Matt Matulia were both 2 for 4. Matulia had an RBI.
Catcher Mark Reed was 2 for 5 with a triple.
Daytona Cubs
Yesterday I said it was a good thing the D-Cubs didn't have a scheduled game because it would have likely been rained out. Tonight their scheduled game was rained out.
Peoria Chiefs
The weather tonight in Peoria was fine. The schedule said to not play anyway.
Boise Hawks
The Hawks came from behind to beat the Spokane Indians, 3-2 in 11 inning.
Starter Jeff Beliveau allowed two unearned runs in a 3.2 inning start. Both runs scored on a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Beliveau allowed only two hits, walked two and struck out six.
Then the bullpen settled in for a long game. Thirty-seventh round pick Eric Hamren made his Boise debut with two shutout innings, although he did allow three hits and a walk. Mike Perconte had 1.1 innings of perfect relief.
David Cales, a 24th round pick this season, got the win when the Hawks got a run in the ninth to tie and a run in the eleventh to win. Cales pitched three shutout innings, allowing only one hit and one walk while striking out four. Bubba O'Donnell got his second save with a perfect 11th inning.
Right fielder Kyler Burke was 2 for 4 with the eventual game-winning home run in the 11th. It was his sixth home run. Burke also doubled.
Shortstop Ryan Flaherty went 2 for 5 with two doubles. Left fielder David Macias went 2 for 4.
We haven't needed a special Michael Brenly alert in about a week. So as not to disappoint the Brenly groupies out there, Brenly went 2 for 4 with a double.
One guy who didn't have a good night was Josh Vitters. Vitters could have tied the record for longest hitting streak in the Northwest League tonight, but he went 0 for 5 and his hitting streak ended at 25 games. He also made the error that led to the two unearned runs in the fourth. Clearly we need to reassess his status as a prospect after a performance like tonight.
I hope everyone knows I'm not serious about that. He just had a bad night.
AZL Cubs
Were beaten by the AZL Rangers, 8-1.
Chris Huseby had three shutout innings of relief, although he did walk four and struck out only one.

How'd Pie Do?
I figure he was a BIG TIME PROSPECT, so I cant help but wonder what he’s doing…
One thing you learned as a Cubs fan: when you bought you ticket, you could bank on seeing the bottom of the ninth.

Also...
Other than Hoffpauir, you dont provide much fo a perspective on the season for some of these prospects… Lets see what they’re doing on seasonal basis, rather than just day-by-day. Maybe add their avg/obp after what they’ve done each day?

I only give updates
on hitters who get two hits or hit a home run in a game. Sometimes if they do something else remarkable, they get mentioned as well. (Vitters got mentioned a lot lately because of his hitting streak.) I do this to make my workload manageable on a nightly basis. Honestly, for people who want more information, I provide a link to the box score and they can get that information themselves easily enough.
If I don’t mention someone, you can assume they got one or zero hits that night, or they didn’t play.
I usually give home run totals when someone hits one, and I often give wins or saves totals, although not always. When I feel someone’s seasonal or monthly totals need more attention, I mention it. (I mentioned Hoffpauir tonight.) But what you’re suggesting is way more work that I am willing to do on a nightly basis, especially since I don’t get paid for this. The kind of information you seek is available at milb.com.

I mean this with all due respect...
But really, all you’re doing is verbalizing a box score. There’s a reason I usually come to YOUR posts rather than just check the box score, but it just seems like there should be some info on the top guys in the system. In my opinion, its much more important that Pie went 0-for-the-game than it is that some 2nd rate 2B from AAA hit a homerun.
Pie will more than likely get called up in September, so I guess my point is it’d be nice to see how guys like Pie (and Wuertz, Hoffpauir, etc) do on a daily basis.

When the season is over...
… Josh will write a long wrap of the top prospects in the system. The daily wrap and season wrap take a lot of work, and Josh has a young baby in his household.
I think your criticism is unwarranted. I think Josh does great work here and he did this all on his own without me asking him.

I'm not going to turn this into the Felix Pie wrap
and that’s that. You want something different than what I’m providing on a daily basis. That’s fair. There are lots of fans of guys like Josh Kroeger and Doug Deeds around here too, and people like updates on them.
I realize you’re not trying to be critical, but I don’t have the time nor desire to do what you are suggesting.
And with all due respect, while I do a lot of “verbalizing box scores,” I think I do a lot more than that. Maybe not every day, but most.
I’ve been doing it this way for two seasons now, and the majority seem to like it this way. So I’ll keep doing it that way. There have been a few complaints of people who just want daily updates of prospects, but most like it this way.

Geez, dude...
…I’m gonna give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you’re honestly trying to give Josh some objective feedback here, but, as he points out, this ain’t his full-time job. I would suggest looking at his wraps as a quick and dirty way of keeping up to speed on the Cubs farm system in action and a good jumping off point to learning about the many prospects (and other players) involved.
For me, it just helps to read all of these guys’ names regularly so I have at lease some passing familiarity with players who could soon (or eventually) have an impact on the major league level.

yeah, seriously- just click on the boxscore and then click on the guy's name
It will give you their season and prior stats. EZ.

Josh, I love the reports just as they are.
If I want more info, I check the box scores and the minor league pages.
Ryan, Josh is doing a DAILY recap of the games. If you want more, do some digging yourself. The internet makes it easy to find for yourself.

Actually...
…maybe this is a suggestion for Al to add some links to the Cubs minor league teams’ stats on the site (if they’re not there already).
But I agree – Josh, the reports are awesome. I’m excited to see Hoff and Pie up in Wrigley in September, and REALLY excited about Vitters being on the team one day…
You should
be excited about Vitters. The only question I have about him right now is whether he’s going to replace Ramirez or Lee.

Lee...but at third base
Ramirez will move over to first, is my prediction.

That's a loooong way off.
My guess is our 1B in 6 years is someone not affiliated with the Cubs currently in any way.

That's a possibility
I should also add that a move to right field wouldn’t be out of the question for Vitters either. But I think he does stick at third.

Memphis Had Rain Out Vs. Round Rock
That rain out was this past Friday. There aren’t many games rained out at Auto Zone Park because of its great drainage system. It just kept on raining that night. There’s still a chance that the I-Cubs will clinch the division next week in Memphis.

I think there's a good chance
that happens.
The Cubs rain out was at Tuscon, of all places.

Hoffpauir...
…is a hitting machine (with a beautiful swing) and I would love to see what he could do with extended AB’s in the bigs. If this guy could carry an OF glove, I think he would have been an established solid major league hitter for somebody.
"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel
I've come to believe that...
…if Hoffpauir fails to hit a double (or a home run) on any given day, the Earth will spin off its rotational axis and send us all careening into that fiery ball at the center of our galaxy. Micah, for the sake of the human race, please continue to wait on a fastball, square up the pitch, put a good swing on it and run hard. Oh, and if you can do anything about global warming, that would be nice, too.
Nanika Ga Okoru!
it's well known
that Micah doesn’t even own a car – he bikes to every home game – and wears hemp clothing to reduce his global footprint.

OK, cool.
But the whole keeping-us-from-spinning-into-the-sun thing. That’s the important part.
Nanika Ga Okoru!
completely agree.
mass vaporization could be a big, big problem, especially given the way the Big League club is playing.

I tried to get the article
on Pawelek and could not find it. What was he suspended for?
Looks like him and Harvey are first round busts.

up on the front page now. He didn’t get a passport despite being told to many times.

Sounds like Pawelek...
… has some maturity and attitude issues..

Sounds like Pawelek...
…is on the cusp of getting his outright release from the organization. He’s been a kettle of fish for some time now.
Sure does
I liked what I saw on the mound from him in Boise, even if it wasn’t that impressive for a first-round pick in his fourth season. But he certainly hasn’t been good enough for the organization to put up with him not doing what he’s told.

Kevin Goldstein?
Does anyone know what Goldstein said exactly? Is there a link to this article too? Thanks.
Pawelek
It doesn’t seem like just maturity. He hasn’t really developed as a player. It is true that attitude and maturity help, but the kid might just be a bust talent wise.
