Josh Fogg vs Carlos Zambrano

Interesting Barry Rozner column today in which he:

  • Calls out Alfonso Soriano for not running hard enough on the fly to left last night;
  • Says Lou is frustrated with Kosuke Fukudome and may start giving him days off.
Bruce Miles writes about Geovany Soto and also says:
  • September callups are likely to be Kevin Hart, Koyie Hill, Felix Pie, Michael Wuertz, Micah Hoffpauir... and Angel Guzman. That last one would surprise me, but maybe Guzman IS ready after all.
  • Former #1 pick Mark Pawelek apparently upset the organization because, according to Bruce, "club officials said Pawelek did not acquire a passport in time for a team trip to Canada." Pawelek has been sent home.

The Cubs will get to face Josh Fogg for the second time this year. The first time, on April 16 at Wrigley Field, they had seven hits, two walks and nine runs off him in two-plus innings. Fogg's lifetime ERA vs. the Cubs is 6.33 in 21 starts and players currently on the team are hitting .364 against him, including Derrek Lee (.441), Jim Edmonds (.429), Aramis Ramirez (.333, 4 homers, 16 RBI), and even Carlos Zambrano (3-for-7).

Z, for his part, acknowledges his mechanical problems:

"I’ve been rushing a little too much and I’ve been working with the pitching coach on correcting some things in my approach," Zambrano said.

He faced the Reds on July 9 at Wrigley Field and allowed only one hit in eight innings -- a HR to Adam Dunn, who's no longer on the team. Dunn had been a particular tormentor of Z's -- only Edwin Encarnacion (10-for-28, 2 HR) among current Reds has hit him well.

Today's game is on CSN Chicago only -- no Reds TV, so EI viewers will see Len & Bob. Also see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

I have been saying that Soriano does not hustle...

But I bet lambasted on this site. As long as he hits then he is excused. Nonsense.

"We’ve still got a long ways to go, I don’t like to get giggly over things in July. But the team’s playing well, they really are. They’re playing with confidence, and it shows."

Enough...

…I’m tired of the “Soriano doesn’t hustle” talk. I happen to think he’s a pretty damn good ballplayer who occasionally makes gaffes in baserunning or fielding, but DEFINITELY cares, gives good effort, and adds a lot to the team.

Let’s just drop this one, and all agree to disagree, okay?

Believe it or not...

…hustling is a skill that all ballplayers don’t have. Some guys just aren’t comfortable going full bore all the time because they aren’t wired that way. I know it sounds simple – just run hard, but the bottom line is, not everyone can force themselves to do it all the time.

I don’t think Soriano tells himself to take it easy, he just doesn’t have the motor to go all out all the time.

Soriano is a typical multimillion dollar player

he goes out there, does whatever it is that his natural abilities allow him to do, and nothing more, now I am not complaining… our record indicates how important he is to the team when he is in the lineup

Soriano CONSTANTLY needs a shoe shoved up his ass to play the game the right way

Right now Soriano is one of his patented stupid streaks. He is maddening to watch at times. And if he vaporizes in the playoffs again this year?? Well then I’m going to take the kid gloves off.

We need someone to play Carlton Fisk to Alfonso Soriano's Deion Sanders

Remember when Fisk of the White Sox got out of his catcher crouch and screamed at Sanders of the Yankees to “run out the fuckin’ ball”? Well we need someone on this team to do the same damned thing. $136 million for ballplayer who doesn’t run hard and gets picked off of first base. Soriano drives me insane. I do not like him and I will never like him. And that is my perogative.

So now we're advocating Soriano blowing off the 3rd base coach...

To go along with not being able to make an easy catch in left field last night. To go along with his dogging it on the basepads. To go along with him being picked off of 1st base two times within a week. To go along with him standing in the batter’s box to admire a line drive off the wall that he thought was a home run. To go along with him putting every Cub hitter in jeopardy because his actions so infuriate the opponent that they can’t wait to go head hunting for Cubbies.

by MDBNIU on Aug 21, 2008 1:05 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I know the guy doesn't like Soriano,

but you don’t have to be a jerk about it. Every ballplayer has shortcomings. D-Lee hits into DP’s, Dome doesn’t have any power, Theriot gets thrown out too much. The fact is, there is no perfect player. When I see him I’ll bow down and worship his ass. Until then, you appriciate a player for what he does, critique him constructively and shut the hell up!

Bobby Cox...

…has sent him that message twice already with balls at his head. Once last year when he posed at home plate watching one of his 3 dingers and the one this year when he didn’t run out a sure double.

Again, I don’t think Soriano does his loafing on purpose (ala Deion or others), he just doesn’t have it in him to hustle all the time. The talk Lou had with him obviously only had a temporary effect, and Soriano has been this way his entire career (he ain’t gonna change now).

Being in Tucson

I don’t see every game but the games I do see it seems like Soriano just doesn’t hustle to the balls that are hit to him. I think he assumes that the batter will reach second no matter what then why run to the ball any harder than I need too. I don’t buy the excuse that the leg injury is still a concern to him. According to some who posted here, he ran right through the hold signal at third base so I think he can run (hustle) when he feels like it.

So I'm currently getting Dish Network's TurboHD installed,

and with it I get regional sports networks, including Comcast HD. I’m in Madison, so in theory I should get the game, right? I have so little idea how this works. I know they said that the regional sports networks are good for games only, so IMO that implies I should get this game. Any thoughts/help/opinions?

When we had

Dish we got CSN here in Iowa. Check your guide and see if it shows it.

Iowa

is Cub territory so you can see it. Madison is Brewers territory and Cubs games will be blacked out.

No

It will be blacked out. Sorry. You need Extra Innings for that, and Dish doesn’t offer Extra Innings.

Borowy . . .Sutcliffe . . .Harden?

by Josh77 on Aug 21, 2008 12:39 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

So then what's the point of offering the regional sports networks..

if I can’t even see games on them?

that is hard to say...

but i just got direct tv and asked about extra innings and they wanted to sell me the 1/2 season package with a month left in the season. I almost bit on that one.

It's not Dish it's MLB and the territory thing...

You’ll get all the other programming on Comcast just not the games. I have the same problem in Milwaukee.

That's the thing:

It specifically says that you only get games, no other programming. So if I’m blacked out of the games, and I don’t get any other programming, what the hell am I paying $5 a month for?

Check the guide thingy...

If it says MLB at 1:00, I would press record, and then it should set up record or say it’s blacked out in your area.

OT question:

So you don’t get non-HD channels, like Comedy or E?

One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.

by chilango2 on Aug 21, 2008 12:37 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Correct.

The only thing I’m mad about is Comedy Central. Every other channel I watch is in HD, and I get a lot of movie channels (HBO/Max/Showtime…) in HD. So I’m pretty excited.

But

soon enough every channel should be HD. So you’re ahead of the curve. Sorry for being impolite, but may I ask how much this service costs?

Not a problem:

There are like 3 packages (Bronze/Silver/Gold). I got Silver, which is i think like 33 a month. Another 5 for locals in HD. And then I added the movie channels (Cinemax was free, each group is 10 bucks). I think I’m around 75 a month, but I assume most people wouldn’t go nuts on the movie channels like I did.

I have the same thing. You'll get Comedy Central it just won't be in HD...

We still get standard channels with turbo HD.

Tough one run loss

yesterday night when Ted went deep into the game, but the bats went to sleep as they have about once a week since the All Star Break. The Cubbies will get it together and smash the Fogg out of Wrigley today and win the seventh consecutive series today and look for some Nats to invade Wrigley this weekend. Let’s take care of this one….then think about throwing the Octopi on the field this weekend.

Yesterday was a true tough luck loss

Cincy should not have scored a run:

1. Strike three thrown to the backstop – which allowed the runner to go to 3rd, but more importantly prevented the 2nd out of the inning from being recorded. The runner on 3rd would score on a groundout.
2. Lucky bloop double – maybe Soriano gets to it if he runs hard, but probably not.

Luck is part of the game. Yesterday we didn’t have any. Forget it. Let’s go get the W today!

In tight ballgames in the late innings he needs to be removed for Reed Johnson.

its not obvious that reed johnson would have made that catch

I was watching, and at the time I thought Soriano could have had it, but on the reply later, it just looked like it fell in no-man’s land.

In any case, Soriano’s bat produces more run than his glove gives up, so I would only remove him in very limited situations.

by SuperContext on Aug 21, 2008 1:02 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agreed..

His bat more than makes up for his outfield play. He isn’t a horrible outfielder, there are worse out there than Sori, but you only take him out late if you have to, but i’d still rather have his bat late in games then Reed’s, nothing against Reeds bat

Buster Olney said a few days ago that the Braves would entertain offers for their 26 year old shortstop (who makes 450k) Yunel Escobar. He is a plus bat, a solid defender, and would move Theriot to his more appropriate position at second.

They are looking for a bat in return. Apparently Cox doesn't like the guy.

I couldn't even speculate what we'd have to send them in return, but I think he would be a good fit given his low salary, his productive bat, his position, and his age. I don't care if he's a jerk if he makes the team win more.

What would it take?
