Fun with numbers
Fun with numbers:
Cubs: 77-49 (36 games remaining / 17 home & 19 road)
Brewers: 73-55 (34 games remaining / 19 home & 15 road)
Cardinals: 71-58 (33 games remaining / 18 home & 15 road)
If the Cubs do no better than SPLIT their remaining 36 games (18-18), that gives them a record of 95-67.
The Brewers would have to go 22-12 to tie that mark.
The Cardinals would have to go 24-9 to tie that mark.
If the Cubs do BETTER than split their remaining 36 games, (19-17, 20-16, 21-15, etc.), it’s a two game swing to the good and forces the Brewers and Cardinals to match that two game swing with a win of their own just to stay even.
And this doesn’t take into consideration the options of the Wild Card. That’s where the real race lies…
And no, I’m not saying the race is over by any means- just that the year-long play of the Cubs have put them in a very enviable position for post season play.
Well done, lads!

20-16?
Of course, I thought 21-17 the rest of the way before the Reds series began. After splitting the last two games, I’ll say 20-16 for the remainder of the regular season. That would mean the Brewers would have to go 24-10 to tie the Cubs. I see Milwaukee “only” going 22-12 down the stretch. I don’t think the Cardinals have much a chance to win the division but could win the wild card.

Just stay sharp,
focused and keep doing what’s got us here. Have enough lead to set up the rotation for the playoffs. It feels good to be where we are but there is more work to do.
This is only the beginning....Lou Pinella end of '07 season and Chicago Transit Authority (the band when they were really good).

Okay as for series results:
Cubs have played 31 three game series to date (Reds will be the 32nd)
They have won 18 lost 13 but interestingly they have swept 8 series and been swept twice!
They swept one 2-game series and split the other 1-0-1 and split three 4-game series and of course won one, sweeping the Brewers making 10 sweeps to date. Thus they are:
20-13-4 in series this year…..or…..have won 54% of their series but have swepted 27% of them, or have their series wins are sweeps!
If they win this afternoon they will have be 11-11 when series are split 2-1 but 8-2 when there is a sweep.

oh and BTW they have 14 games remaining for August with 12 wins in the book
They could easily win 10 out of that 14 and put a 22 win month on the board.

amend that 12 games remaining and put up a 9 win
for 21 wins in a month.

...and I've been to two games this season...
(hey, it’s a long drive from Michigan!). Opening day & June 26. Both losses. Had to leave both games early because of cranky kids. The Cubs had not scored in either game by the time we had to leave.
Is this a good time to bring up I was also at Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS? And we know how THAT one turned out.
SOOOO, based on my “good luck charm” status, I’ll be watching the rest of this season on the tube or listening on XM.

I think that's a very wise choice.

Well, it's taking one for the team...
Actually, my wife has a worse Wrigley record than I do over the last 25+ years. So she can’t go either… :(

I posted this yesterday
in one of the threads, you plagiarist. Do I get any credit? Noooo. Why do I even bother? Thanks a lot, Zeke. Dumbass :)

Woah! I honestly did not read your thread post.
If I had, I wouldn’t have even bothered with this. I didn’t mean to upset anyone. I was just noodling around on my lunch hour looking at the standings and thinking: “Hmmm…what if…”
I also can’t tell if you are really ticked off, given the smiley at the end of your post.
In any case, I take plagiarism seriously given my line of work. No harm intended.
Can we chalk this one up to "great minds think alike"?

I'm not angry
I thought it was funny. The dumbass reference was in regards to the pregame thread today.

Also
I thought it was interesting that the subject was exactly the same for both of our posts

See, great minds DO think alike...
…actually my wife and I do this kind of thing all the time- independently think of the same thing at the same time, finish each other’s sentences, etc. Of course, being married 25+ years will do that I guess…

Not sure why
But I actually think The Cardinals or Phillies might end up getting the Wild Card.
The Brewers have been fortunate to have some good offense lately and better than usual pitching from their #4 and #5.
In many ways Cubs have an advantage playing playoff contenders. You see the weaker teams will be using September call-ups. Brewers don’t know these new guys. If you remember in 2004 that screwed The Cubs when they played the Mets. Even The Reds could do that…wait no, Dusty would rather just play Patterson and Bako.
I’m just saying don’t be surprised if we play The Cards or end up facing Phillies first round (which would be scary).

The weaker teams...
… will use their regulars until playoff berths are clinched — that’s sort of a gentleman’s agreement between teams.

True
And Cubs played Mets last week of 2004. And they got us badly…
