A few things I'd be curious to know peoples thoughts on

Hi everyone.

A few things I would be interested in hearing peoples thoughts on.

And I know it's early and hope I'm not cursing anything by bringing these thoughts up.

1.  If the Cubs clinch the division early would you start to give regulars rest, get the rotation set up and maybe skip a start or two to get some pre playoff rest?  Also what about some of the bullpen arms?

And on the flip side do you then worry about them getting out of sync?  I remember reading this was a problem on the 90s Braves teams.  And many people say the Indians pushing them helped the Sox in 05.

I say give Marmol some time but still pitch him to keep him fresh.  Maybe go to 6 man for the rest of the rotation.  Give regulars some time off but not too much especially if they have a nagging issue,

2.  As it stands now who starts game 1 of the playoffs?  I say Dempster.

3.  What are you hearing from your friends who are either not Cub fans or are sort of the follow them a bit but not rabidly?  And how many bandwagon jumpers are in your life?

I'm sure I'm not the only BCBer who is their friends "goto" person when it comes to the Cubs if they see something in the paper or tv they are curious about or they meet a player or the like they will ask you about it.

Most of my friends know how much I live and die with this baseball team and even if they aren't fans or not big fans they are really happy for me and enjoying me enjoy this season.

And OT

I saw this posted in a Bears forum.  For those of you that are rabid fans of the Bears as well are you less involved in the Bears because of the Cubs?  Did the Bears kind of sneak up on you because of the Cubs?

For me I have followed the Bears somewhat less this year so far and admittedly they did kind of sneak up on me.

Well...

….regarding #3, a co-worker of mine in Calif. who’s a big Dodger fan said to me last week, “yeah, the Cubs are large and in charge,” which felt pretty good!

Re. the other stuff…..jeez, I just can’t bring myself to comment on playoffs or anything at this point….I just…..can’t…… too scary!

Sorry but No playoff speculation from me right now...

…it’s too much like tempting fate. Strangely enough, the only thing I’m remotely superstitious about is the Cubs.

by bluekoolaide on Aug 21, 2008 7:53 PM CDT   0 recs

Agreed.

I’ve developed a number of ridiculous superstitious habits regarding the Cubs. Sometimes I beat myself up about it and other times I tell myself it’s part of the fun of baseball. In any case, I’ll pass on discussing specifics about the playoffs until the Cubs actually clinch.
And I haven’t encountered any bandwagon jumpers, though I’m sure there are plenty out there.

Yes, sir!

I agree with this.

While everything’s going great right now… I’m just enjoying the ride. No predictions, no looking forward, nothing till it happens.

as someone wise once told me

the playoffs are a crapshoot anyway. Without even knowing who we might play, should we get that far…

We don't skip pitchers' starts

we just shorten ‘em up. Bring up some minor leaguers to throw extra innings. And Zambrano is our ace, he has been our ace for years, and he’s paid like an ace. He’s the starter.

And my friends are Mets fans, so I hope they continue to wallow in last year’s collapse.

I don't see...

…Lou not starting Zambrano in game one unless he really struggles the rest of the way. I don’t think he will want to mess with the this unless he has to.

Agree

I would do:
Game 1- Z (he’s our ace)
Game 2- Dempster (he plays better at home)
Game 3- Harden- By game 3 hopefully we will not have an overused bullpen.

Let’s talk Game 4 and 5 when post season comes and it’s necessary.

I'm sorry, but this post is WAY too early.

I enjoy every win. I die with every loss. I’m living and loving this season day to day.

When the magic number is zero, then I’ll be interested in this topic. I’ve learned the hard way not to get too far ahead of myself.

The Cubs lead right now is just about where it was in ‘69, and that was just too painful. I know this team is better and deeper. It doesn’t matter.

By the way, this is my last post for a couple of weeks. My wife and I are headed out on a well-deserved camping and hiking vacation through the Utah/Arizona/New Mexico deserts. My “Bleed Cubbie Blue” shirt is making the trip with me, and when I get back, I’ll try and post a picture of it (with me in it) in some bizarre canyon or on top of some high mountain. It’ll be painful not to get to follow the Cubs easily (a vast majority of the territory I’ll be passing through has no cell service whatsoever), but I’ll be checking in whenever I can (may have a shot at logging on Labor Day weekend).

In the meantime, you guys keep cheering the Cubs on. I hope the lead will be lengthened by the time I get back. Keep the faith and Go Cubs Go!

IF IT TAKES FOREVER!!

Have a great trip...

… looking forward to seeing that picture!

My 2 cents...

Most people here are tired of me beating them over the head with all my Cub stuff, a few bandwagon jumpers, a few saying we gonna choke, but as i always say, It ain’t how you start, its how you finish! We gotta ways to go, my predi. is 95 wins, and see where that puts us. I agree with the pitching line up, give D. Lee a rest, D.Roe a rest, and keep the bullpin sharpe by any means.

Letting Bears sneak up on you

Can be kind of dangerous. But since this year’s team resembles Yogi and Boo-boo more than ferocious grizzlies, you’ll probably be all right….

by SuperContext on Aug 22, 2008 9:23 AM CDT   0 recs

I Might be just the guy

to throw in 2 cents worth here.
I have no fear of jinxing the Cubs and I have that outsider’s take on it.

Question #1
Mostly, "if it ain’t broke don’t fix it." don’t upset the MO! rest the players as normal and maybe platoon a little more.
dtpollitt is right on the mark in his comment about the pitching

Question #2
No way to know. you have to know a lot more before you can say who to start. there are too many unknown variables at this point.

Question #3
I’m that outsider you’re asking about. I’ve felt from about mid-season that this is the Cubs year. I’m really pulling for them.

This gives me an opportunity to throw something else in here…Playoffs and Wildcards.
I’m an oldster…and a purist…and a fan of baseball first and a team second.
I’ve never liked the wildcard thing and therefore I don’t favor playoffs.
I mentioned this here earlier and someone said they didn’t like it either until the Cubs became a wildcard. then it was cool.
BUNK!!!
I want to see the two BEST TEAMS in the World Series…and wildcard teams and playoffs can keep that from happening.
If the Cardinals just happen to get the wildcard spot (they won’t) and then get a hot streak and knock the Cubs out…how cool would it be then? NOT!!!! The Cubs deserve to get to the World Series, period!
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!!!!!

Lastly:
 Da Bears…
I don’t care. :)

Still too early believe it or not

There’s way too many games to go and the Cubs have to keep up their momentum. I’ll be more inclined to begin talking to this right around the Brewers series here 9/16-9/18.
