Andrew Greeley at it again...

What is it with Andrew Greeley?  Why does he feel compelled to smear and put down Sox fans?

When the Sox won the World Series Greeley wrote an ugly, hateful smear on Sox fans.  Now he's at it again.  This time it's a gratuitous smear of Sox fans.

Who are those who reject compromise of a useless and criminally deadly war like Iraq? They are the blusterers, members of "veteran's organizations," mountain folk, crackers, West Texans, blue collar workers, evangelical clergy, neo-cons, Republicans, white ethnics, Sox fans...

Here's a heaping helping of the smears, stereotypes and lies spread by Greeley less than 3 years ago:

It's not as though the White Sox are a real Chicago franchise like the Cubs or the Bears or Notre Dame...the behavior of White Sox fans, an intolerable bunch of human beings when baseball is the subject (who beat up on wives of opposing players)...My seminary classmates who were Sox fans were insufferable on the days they won and we lost. More mature than they were, we Cub fans felt no need to cackle triumphantly when the Sox lost...

So, let's see Greeley thinks Cubbies fans are superior to Sox fans and he demonstrates this by stereotyping and spreading ugly smears.  Really, "father," WWJD?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Let’s face it, people can be hypocritical and don’t like being exposed. If it’s as dark as you make it sound, then the “search” feature should be removed.

… goes on in my absence. When the Sox lost a series in KC a few weeks ago there were 50+ Sox posts here and none by me.

These comments by Greeley betray his words and the comments frequently made here about Cubs fans.

Remember Greeley's comments...

… when you get ready to talk about Sox fans always bashing the Cubs.

Here the Cubs have the best record in the NL. They’ll be going to the post-season (barring a monumental choke) and he’s still getting jabs in at Sox fans, in an column completely unrelated to the Sox.

For all Greeley’s and others claims of the superiority of Cubs fans, his words prove to be much like the group he loves to smear.

by Josh77 on Aug 21, 2008 9:11 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just to clarify Josh

and this doesn’t apply to all of them but certainly a majority; White Sox fan = Cub hater. So if he’s a White Sox fan, there’s a good chance he is a Cub hater. They’re taught that way on the South side.

So many of them are almost as obsessed with seeing the Cubs lose as their team win. Instead of them concentrating on what the Twinkies, Cats and Tribe are doing, they’re thinking about the Cubs.

Do Cubs fans do that same? Hell no. We’re thinking about the Brewers and Cards, sometimes the ‘stros when it’s not the Cubs themselves.

Yeah, I care about what the White Sox do 6 games a season (guess which 6); the other 156, I could not care less.

And that’s simply not true that it was “one snide response.” Your very first post was a dig at Sox fans but you went on from there. And I’ve brought this out before.

In that former discussion, after exposing your misleading description of your posts on SouthSideSox, I asked you this and I repeat:

Cubbie fans, even here, often talk about a Sox fan inferiority complex. Just like in S.Cal, here in ChiTown, Cubs fans to a vast majority do not give a crap what happens 9 miles South of Clark and Addison.

I do think it’s funny however that this guy thinks the name “Sox” refers to the PaleHose. Outside Chicago, the reference to Sox is always the team that plays in beantown. I guess only one instance that inferiority complex isn’t in full swing. Never have I seen such a large percentage of a major sports teams’ fan base be such a self-pity mode for so long.

that even in a random sampling of fans, ChiSox fans are obsessed with the CUBS, instead of the TWINKIES and/or BOSOX.

My theory still stands: A majority of ChiSox fans 2nd most interest (behind only their team’s fortunes) is hoping the Cubs lose.

Cubs fans are – REPEAT – not interested in the ChiSox. Cubs fans are not obsessed with what the ChiSox do or do not do; EXCEPT for those 6 games of the marathon 162-game season.

Cubs fans [mostly] care about what the RedBirds, ‘stros and BrewCrew are up to, NOT the ChiSox. The rest of the time, it could be the Mets, Phils, Snakes or Dodgers. But it’s NOT the ChiSox.

Go figure out what it’ll take to beat the Twinkies or at a minimum, wrestle the WC away from the BoSox.

And yeah, I am right; right down from your GM and your manager. It starts at the top for some reason there. EVEN YOUR TEAMS’ GM AND MANAGER are obsessed with the Cubs. Hey, it’s your phobia. Quit whining about being 2nd best in your city and FOCUS on YOUR TEAM. It would funny if it were not so tragic if the loud-mouth manager at 35th and Shields would FOCUS on teams in the AL-Central instead of one in particular in the NL-Central.

Greeley said that too…then went on to write about the Sox. You might not be interested in the Sox (but your posting here indicates otherwise) but the 15,000+ posts on this blog about the Sox prove you WRONG.

Cubbie fans love to say they are not interested in the Sox…and then post 15,000+ times about a team they are not interested in. You’d think that if you were not interested in something the proof would be there by a lack of interest, a lack of posts. It’s just the opposite with some here. The howls of protest when called out on their hypocrisy says it all.

All the posts here attacking me and so very few condemning Greeley’s ugly smears. Interesting.

I choose not to read Greeley's piece

It sounds like crap. Are you forcing me to read it? Are you cramming it down our collective throats?

Doc Crawdad, the one note tuba....

…got any other songs, Crawdad? This song and dance is getting old…

Oh yeah, did you enjoy getting your beat down from the Rays tonight?…IIRC, Ozzie blew a gasket the last time that happened…

So you know, I’m in Tampa and I LOVE watching a team with a $25M payroll beat up on your beloved White Sox…

you mean RED Sox?

Dude, your team is irrelevant as a “major market” club in MLB. You’re 2nd best in ChiTown and that will NEVER change.

If your owner (as Shanghi Badger correctly pointed out), GM and manager were not so obsessed with the Cubs and various players on that team over the years not obsessed with the Cubs then you would have a point.

I could care less Greeley is a Cubs fan. He does not represent Cubs fans. Like other columnists that incite irrational behaviour, it would be best for you to address him, not us.

One LAST time dumb-ass, CUBS FANS DO NOT GIVE A SHIT ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS NINE MILES SOUTH OF CLARK AND ADDISON. Deal with it! You cannot change it!

Dude you are GD ADULT!!!!

Grow up! We choose not to read it, not because we are hypocrites, but because it probably is crap, just as any public smearing of a fanbase. GET THE ________ OVER IT! Your whiny, bitchy attitude is so annoying.

Just go away if you do not like us here. Why is this so freakin hard to graso for you. You are obviously not enjoyed here by us.

Oh, brother.

I know I suggested above that we ignore this post, but I thought I should read the column in question. The reference is tongue in cheek and hardly worth being offended by. I wonder if you’re trying to start a political and/or religous debate with some of your inflammatory comments, but thus far, no one has taken the bait.

Are you serious?

You came here, BCB, to talk about a writer who badmouths Sox fans?

Don’t you know we hate Sox fans? (sarcasm font)

by McRipper on Aug 22, 2008 12:09 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I think i've figured it out...

He posts these baiting topics on the Sox every once in a while, gets a bunch of people to respond that this is a Cubs site and not a Sox site and then whenever he searches someones profile for “Sox” they come up as having discussed it

so he can go back and site how many times you’ve written the word “Sox” (regardless of whether it actually references the White Sox or not) and call you a closet Sox fan

and the cycle continues infinitely

nice master plan Crawdad and a definition of the word “Troll”

This individual would be banned from most of the SBN Sites

if he continued to do what he keeps doing. I can no longer post at the south side site because I offended somebody. This individual continues to offend here, but he has the right to post, in Al’s view, which I respect.

But isn’t enough — enough? We are to take flack about an article that most of us have no interest in?

This is just all very weird.

Offense?

My offense was a fanpost about Cubbie fan Greeley’s grievous comments. The responses have been almost unilaterally personal attacks, yours included, but that’s your way hardly smooth.

I am going to sign off now and leave this discussion and BCB for awhile. That should make you happy.

The Cubs are having a terrific season. Fixate on the Cubs. Stop attacking the Sox and Sox fans. Hopefully you and others can take the medicine you love to dish out.

This is so funny I am laughing out loud!

This guy comes here, posts things that he knows are antagonistic. When people respond he whines about it, argues for a while. Then claims WE are so obsessed with him and his crowd. The logic here is so OUT OF WHACK, I believe there is something malfunctioning with the good doctor.

BUT, as far as him leaving, nothing would make me happier to never see his screen name here again. Not cause he is a Sox fan, but because he is a pain in the ass!

Unless you want to keep posting

comments from 2005…..take care.
By the way, this would be comment 1-thousand-four-hundred-fifty-five at BCB, for you — as opposed to 7 at the Sox site.

Obviously, you are here to incite.

If you were doing this at other sites, you’d be banned.

It’s still ironic I was banned at the Angels site for defending the Sox, and Chicago during the 2005 ALCS. Too bad you didn’t read that material. It’s been erased, as the Good Rev kicked me off and then sent me a nasty E-Mail.

You might have enjoyed the material.
