The Correct Response: Cubs 9, Nationals 2

Once again, leave it to Mike to sum up today's 9-2 Cubs win over the Nationals with a pithy phrase, the one you see as the title of this post.

That's exactly the right statement, and the Cubs made one after their worst loss of the year -- came right back and blew out the Nats, in front of a handful of their fans (Jim McArdle found some more of them, including an entire party of them on the rooftop at Murphy's -- the one where you can't see the game, which was probably just as well for them). I spotted at least two of them in the stands, one on the concourse wearing a gray road WASHINGTON jersey, another in the LF corner seats wearing one of their red alternate shirts with the interlocking "DC" logo (one of the better logos in sports and the one they ought to use on their caps instead of that 1960's era script "W").

Digression again. Important things: Aramis Ramirez smacked two three-run homers; the six-RBI day brought his count to 90, the first Cub to reach that plateau this year and bringing him to sixth in the NL, pending tonight's action. The Cubs now have three players (D-Lee, 74, DeRo, 76, and A-Ram) with 74 or more RBI, all of whom have a shot at 90 and maybe even 100 if they have good Septembers.

It didn't start out very well -- the Cubs left two on in the first, with nearly another DP-Lee, though he beat a relay to make it only a fielder's choice; left the bases loaded in the second and again in the third without scoring. Eight men left in the first three innings -- not good. But in the fourth they broke it open with a walk to Alfonso Soriano -- this isn't saying much, but he's now got 28 walks, almost equaling his total of 31 from all of last year -- two singles, and A-Ram's first homer, making it 4-0. Meanwhile, Ryan Dempster was mowing down the Nats easily; only one Nat reached third base in the first six innings and that was only because Kosuke Fukudome overthrew second base on another Willie Harris extra-base hit, a double into the corner, and what has gotten into Harris the last two days? Or this year? He's a journeyman who's suddenly hitting for power -- 12 of his 19 career HR have been hit this year. He's still not a very good outfielder, as shown by letting Ryan Theriot's bloopy little ball drop in for a single in the fourth inning, helping trigger the Cubs' four-run rally that frame.

Dempster ran out of gas in the 7th on a very sticky, humid day, giving up three hits and a run after two were out, and for some reason Lou let him bat in the last of the 7th and come out for the 8th; I'd have taken him out in that weather, considering the pitch count ran up to 111 (74 strikes), more than necessary. When Dempster hit Lastings Milledge, Carlos Marmol had to be summoned to rescue Dempster, which he did with his usual ease, posting his sixteenth scoreless appearance in his 17 outings since the All-Star break (17.2 IP, 3 hits, 1 ER, 9 BB, 22 K, 0.51 ERA in those 17 appearances). Sean Marshall gave Washington a consolation run in the ninth inning, when Aaron Boone doubled to almost the exact spot he did yesterday with a runner on first.

Today was Dave's (mumblemumble) birthday, which was properly commemorated by a scoreboard announcement, some gooey brownies from Weber's Bakery on the Southwest Side brought by his son Brian, and a visit to the bleachers by Dave's first granddaughter, Catelyn, just past her first birthday, who entertained all of us by keeping her hand immersed in a cup of water for an inning or so. We had fun today -- even though a sudden five-minute tropical island type downpour had us scurrying for the umbrellas, just about the time Ramirez' second three-run jack put the game on ice, and more ice would have been really nice today, given the weather, and I wonder how much longer I can run this sentence on.

That was about it, I guess.

The Cubs had fun too. Rich Harden takes the mound tomorrow to try for the series win, and that'd work for all of us. In the meantime, go Pirates and Braves.

Great win...

Awesome to see Rambo break out. He has a shot at 30 HR and 100 RBI, hopefully quashing all the talk that he’s rapidly declining."

It’s all about winning series, and hopefully the Cubs can keep that up tomorrow afternoon.

Agreed

In fact, while Ramirez’s surface stats are a bit underwhelming relative to those of his last two seasons, his peripherals show that he might be better than ever. His walk rate is way, way higher than his career rate and although his strikeouts are also up, his BB/K is still thirty points above his career rate. He is hitting his highest amount of line drives in three years and he has also taken a large number of ground balls and turned them into flies, something which I would like to see our other corner infielder do. His HR/FB rate is down and unless he has suddenly lost his power, which at this point in his career is unlikely, today might have been a signal of what is yet to come for Ramirez down the stretch. With his newfound plate patience and fly ball ways, I would rather see him in the three hole, but it’s not like he’s being wasted one spot further at four.

I don't think the Brewers...

…will fold. With Sheets and Sabathia healthy, that lineup will score enouph runs for them to win their share of games.

Even if the Brewers only win 55% the rest of the way...

I think the RedBirds fade.

The teams in the East beat each other up.

And the Dodgers have yet to prove they can win in their own division (only .500).

So by process of elimination, even if the Brewers cool off a bit, I think they make the playoffs. And i hope they do cool off as I would like some breathing room in mid-September.

But let’s take care of our own business and keep winning at a 60% clip or better (by keep winning series). That will keep pressure on the Suds.

Ryan Dempster -

you’re table is ready.

He is really impressing me. He hasn’t allowed a HR since July 2nd! He should really be a leading candidate for the Cy Young along with Brandon Webb. He has really been the ace of the staff, and has been consistent all year long.

You want a MVP candidate? What about Aramis Ramirez? If he finishes with 30+ HR and 110 RBI, you would have consider him also. He will have a OBP near .400, also.

Also, it looks like Marmol is back to early season form.

Both He...

…and DeRosa have been top notch performers, and have really allowed the club to take it up another level from the 85 wins last year. I give Dempster big time kudos, and have no problem saying I was completely wrong when I thought he would struggle as a starter.

That game yesterday was a good thing. Getting an ass whoopin once in a while keeps you a little humble, and is much better than losing a close one in the last inning.

From this point, you hope everyone can stay healthy and they can finish strong.

First Time Poster From Denver

Been a faithful BCB’er for two years now, so I figure it’s about time to get in on the action. Born in Chicago, been in Denver for 25 years.

No TV coverage today due to the Saturday Fox blackout rules, so the family left when it was 5-0 to go shopping. I parked next to a red jeep with a Cardinals tire cover, which I thought was funny. The guy in the sports store had a Pujols jersey on and I had my Cubs gear on. He quickly came over to tell me what a great year the Cubs were having and I told him the Cardinals are hanging in there for a Wild Card spot.

Anyway, nice rebound victory today. Great to see Aram making some things happen offensively. Go Cubs Go!

I think we're just seeing who the guy really is.

He’s one of the best right fielders in baseball (+15.5 runs) with a penchant for overthrowing the ball, but overall really is excellent defensively. The problem is, he really just isn’t that good of a hitter. He has a bit more power than Ryan Theriot, and strikes out like crazy now that pitchers are pounding him in with the fastball. Seems like the best offensive ability he has is his OBP skills.

by sackings108 on Aug 23, 2008 4:45 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I think Fukudome...

…is somewhere between what you saw the first 2 months and what you have seen the last 2 months. He isn’t as bad a hitter as he has shown since the all star break, but he isn’t a .310-.320 hitter either.

When all is said and done (time for mental break and adjustments) I think he is a .280-.290 hitter, who will have an OBP of around .360-.370 and will hit you 10-12 homers.

Yeah, I'd be absolutely pleased with those numbers.

I hope he’s able to ramp it up in September and make it there. I “watched” him strike out with the bases loaded on my cell phone this afternoon and was quite melancholy for a good while afterward.

Yes, sir!

by dat cubfan daver on Aug 23, 2008 5:34 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I agree.

Now that he understands what to expect out of the US game, he has to adjust. I think he will come back as a better player next year. Fukudome will adjust. But I think the remainder of this year will be more fits than starts. Lou will keep the pressure off him the remainder of this year. Lou did say after today’s game that, “he was going to have a talk with him (KF) about his hitting tomorrow AM.” Lou is clearly losing his patience.

I think there is even a chance he won’t be on the October roster if his #s don’t improve. Do you want Pie’s defense and speed if he is a decent call up in September? If both Hoff and Pie have good showings in September (assuming they get enough playing time), it could be an interesting problem…

THIS IS OUR CENTURY!!

by LAcarl519 on Aug 23, 2008 7:19 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

No chance hs gets left off the October roster.

Fukudome is not the player he was earlier in the year, and many analysts, particularly those on BP-type sites, had a feeling his success wouldn’t last, but he is still valuable. Also, his defensive numbers look even better when you consider that many say that Wrigey’s right field might be the toughest corner outfield spot to roam in all of baseball. He’s a nice doubles hitter with a little extra pop once in a while who will hit for mediocre average and take walks. If Pie doesn’t pan out and Edmonds doesn’t come back next year, his bat would become more valuable if he moves to center field, which he looks capable of playing pretty well.

by dakoose on Aug 23, 2008 7:26 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

there is NO WAY

Dome gets left off the roster. He still draws LOTS of walks, and his defense is ultimate Transformers edition.

I really don’t understand this fascination with the Hoff, especially as a position player.

What's not to understand?

everybody loves the “kid from nowhere” story, except Micah’s not necessarily a kid. But his age taps into another american favorite, the “career minor leaguer finally makes it to the show” story. Plenty of movies about that. Add in the fact, that he’s absolutely raking the ball in the minors… it’s very appealing to the non-discerning fan.

But 25 man rosters being what they are, there’s usually one spot for the LH pinch-hitter specialist role, especially in the NL. And that spot is currently filled by Ward. So as long as Ward’s numbers are less than stellar, Dome struggles at the plate, people don’t think about defense, and Micah continues to pound the ball, people are going to be fascinated with the Hoff.

I admit I am. But not at the expense of Dome’s defense. Or Ward’s experience. Or pretty much anyone else on the current ML roster. There’s just no room for Hoff now. But he’s a nice Plan B to have in your back pocket. He’s been up before and acquitted himself rather well, if I remember right. So, come September, he should be up and may be able to help us win a few crucial games. And with September’s road game predominance, any and all help will be much appreciated.

by dat cubfan daver on Aug 23, 2008 9:13 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Hoff could see October

if Lou leaves Marquis off the playoff roster, which is a real possibility with both Gaudin and Marshall already in the pen as capable long-men. Hoff has been raking and he could defeat all odds to become the next Carlos Pena-like late bloomer, but I expect him to end up being more of a Fontenot/Theriot than a Pena, and by that I mean a serviceable part timer/fringe starter in the bigs, not a speedy slap hitter with some pop type. Also, since the beginning of last season, he has shown very little plate patience and with more AB’s he could be exposed. For his sake, and the Cubs’, I hope he is legit, but more often than not players with his profile don’t go on to have huge careers in the bigs.

by dakoose on Aug 23, 2008 8:32 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Dome's success early this season

was based around not swinging at garbage, looking for a good pitch and then hitting it. Now he’s over thinking and pressing. He just needs to relax…

everybody got mad at me in last thread for jumping on Dome, BUT...

why not bench him and try the Hoffpauir out there OR put DeRo out there and Fonty at 2B, OR, have some more Reed AND Edmonds together games??? If Fukudome gets injured, they could use Hoffpauir to replace him on the roster.

The fact is, Fukudome is a joke. He’s a late inning defensive replacement, at 12 mil a year. Felix Pie could do that for the minimum, and he has real upside.

I agree and I think

that we’ll see a very different Dome next year. I think the pressure and amount of change he’s experienced this year is astronomical. He’s a human being. Cut him some slack his first year in the States. If his offense continues to suffer next year then, yes, he’ll deserve critical scrutiny. This year? Not so much.
