Pregame Thread: Cubs vs. Nationals, Sunday 8/24, 1:20 CT

Washington Nationals at Chicago Cubs, Aug 24, 2008 1:20 PM CDT

Next Game

Washington Nationals
@ Chicago Cubs

Sunday, Aug 24, 2008, 1:20 PM CDT
Wrigley Field

Jason Bergmann vs Rich Harden

Mostly sunny. Winds blowing in from left field at 5-15 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 75.

Complete Coverage >

In spring training last year, Lou spent much of his pregame talking hitting with Matt Murton. Now, Teacher Lou is going to have a talk with Kosuke Fukudome about his hitting woes. The Cubs are winning, and thus can carry Dome's struggling bat, but it'd be great to get him back on track.

Some of you may be worried about D-Lee's hitting troubles, but he isn't. And about all those DP's? Another good hitter, Vladimir Guerrero, is leading the major leagues with 26 GIDP.

And, calling all dentists: Z's visit to work on his cracked molar is delayed till after the Cubs get back from Pittsburgh.

2008 - Rich Harden 3-1 7 7 0 0 0 0 42.0 26 8 7 5 14 59 1.50 .95

As usual, a reminder that the above stats are Harden's with the Cubs only -- see the pitcher box above the stat line for his combined stats.

2008 - Jason Bergmann 2-9 21 19 1 0 0 0 116.0 126 73 58 20 33 83 4.50 1.37

Jason Bergmann is 0-2, 4.76 lifetime vs. the Cubs. No current Cub has more than 7 AB against him, so the batter/pitcher matchup data is a bit spotty. Derrek Lee has homered off him, but D-Lee left yesterday's game with back spasms (hope it's nothing serious). He has a career ERA of 4.82 and has won only one game since May. Let's keep it that way.

Meantime, Rich Harden has allowed more than one earned run in only one of his seven Cub starts. Aside from that game (August 5 vs. Houston, and the Cubs won anyway), he's given up NO runs at all in three of them, and exactly one in the other three, all on solo HR. The wind's going to be blowing in today. He's never faced the Nats, and the three players on the Nats roster who have faced him (Willie Harris, Ronnie Belliard and Cristian Guzman) are a combined 0-for-12 against him.

Today's game is on WGN and MASN; it should be on EI and thus available nationally. Also see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

Once again, a reminder that you can find the overflow comment threads, including the first pitch thread, on the right sidebar of both the front page and any interior page in the box headed "RECENT STORIES IN GAME THREADS". Today's first pitch thread posts at 1:15 pm CT, and the overflow comment threads will post at 2:15, 3:15 and 4 pm CT, and you can use the last one for recap discussion as I am heading to a party after the game and won't likely be able to have the recap posted till after 6 pm CT.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

Rich has been as good as advertised thus far.

His stuff is just vicious. And he looked phenomenal (sic?) in his last outing. If he can keep his pitch count down, and mow down batters with his usual ease, then today’s game will be enjoyable to watch. Hope D-Lee is ok.

D-Lee

Yes, I’m worried. He’s an important part of the team that is not performing to his career numbers. And, you said more than once this year that you were, too, Al.

There’s more to it than double-plays. He hits weak grounders. A lot. On 3-1 and 2-0 counts. He’s already tied his career high for hitting ground balls for a full season, and it’s August 24. He rarely drives the ball to RF anymore, frequently takes hitters’ pitches and questions the umpire on a lot of strikes.

It’s not like he’s scalding the ball right at people and Theriot happens to be on base when he does it.

Someone asked in that fanpost who we’d want up with the game on the line. Not Lee, not now. I’d want, in order:

Ramirez
DeRosa
Soto
Edmonds/Johnson
Lee

Look, I like Lee — a lot. He’s a good person and a solid baseball player. I wouldn’t drop him in the order just yet. I wouldn’t sit him other than to keep him fresh for the stretch run. But he’s not the Lee that we’re used to seeing — and I’m not even talking about his 2005 career year. It’s a concern, because the Cubs will need him to be able to get to where they want to go.

Ok just kidding. I have never even posted on Theriot but it is 11.45 allready and no one has attacked him.

Could it be

that his back has been bothering him more than he’s let on this year?

That could be one reason for his inability to drive the ball, especially to right, as he’s done in the past.

Fortunately, it doesn’t sounds terribly serious, but a day off or two to rest the back may be good for him.

Weak stats?

Al’s differentiation of Harden’s and Bergmann’s stats against the other team and individual players has me wondering again. Is a pitcher’s record/ERA against a particular team not that informational given occasional roster and lineup changes, both offensively and defensively, in both dugouts? I know it’s mentioned a lot, during telecasts and whatnot, but why is it worth mentioning? If the batter/pitcher matchup data can be a bit spotty in this case, isn’t the team/pitcher matchup data spotty in almost every case?

GIDPs

Last year Albert Pujols and Carlos Lee both led the NL with 27 GIDPs. I’m pretty sure both of those guys are excellent hitters.

I’m not too worried about D. Lee. Yeah, he might not be the hitter was in the last few years, but he doesn’t need to be with everyone contributing the way they are. I do agree with Badger, though, that he needs to start driving the ball the other way.

And let’s hope his back spasms aren’t too bad, but if he does go on the DL, I suppose Micah Hoffpauir can be called up before September. He’s still raking in AAA, and he was hitting pretty well for the big league club when he was up earlier, and that was in limited playing time. I’m not sold on Daryl Ward playing 1B everyday, even if it’s just for a week or two.

Sorry folks

No AFN coverage today. I can watch the Astros/Mutts though. But I won’t.

So… what movie should I put on? I was going to watch some House episodes since I got the Seasons 1-3 box set in the mail the other day, but the damn discs are defective! I watched “Untouchables” earlier today, picked it up for 3 pounds yesterday. A great movie at a great price!

DVD's in the UK are region 2

I have a region-free (and dual voltage) DVD player, though.

"Chicago baseball fans, who are composites of scar tissue and mortifying memories..." - George F. Will

by eswan9 on Aug 24, 2008 1:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes

There’s two factors concerning purchasing DVD’s from different countries: Picture Format, and Region coding. In the USA and Japan, the NTSC format is used, in most of the rest of the world, the PAL format is used. The two aren’t compatible with each other so your DVD player must be capable of playing both (and converting to NTSC if your TV isn’t multi-system).

On top of this, there are different regions encoded on the discs based on the country you buy them in. Region 1 is USA, Region 2 is Europe, Region 3 is Japan, etc. Typically your DVD player will only be able to handle discs for one region – the one it was sold in. This is to try to prevent DVD’s that are sold for cheap in China, etc. being imported to the US or Europe, etc.

Absolutely the same

Just a tiny code inputted into each file to prevent it from being played on other regions players.

I think the real purpose of zone coding

is to protect movies that are still in theatres in parts of the world when the DVDs come out elsewhere. A lot of movies are on DVD in the US while they’re still playing in Europe, for example. No explanation for zone coding movies that have been on video worldwide though.

The PAL to NTSC thing is a pain. When I lived in Europe, it was easy to find video (VHS) players that would play NTCS tapes from home on our European PAL TV. But it was much harder to find a VCR that could play PAL tapes onto an NTSC TV. NTSC is 30 frames per second, and PAL is 25 frames per second, so I’m sure it’s much easier to “drop” every 6th frame (to make 30 fps > 25 fps) than it is to generate the “extra” frame to go the other way. I did find a unit that could do that - it handles all formats in and all formats out — but it was kind of costly. I had to go to Devon Ave. to find it, in one of the electronics stores that caters mostly to people from south Asia and the Middle East. One unit had “on-screen instructions in English and Arabic, manual in Urdu and Farsi.”

by ChipSet on Aug 24, 2008 11:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Sorry

didn’t mean to “strike out” that sentence. The characters between “30 fps” and “25 fps” were entered as hyphen and angle-bracket to make an “arrow”.
