OT: Worst Movie Ever
As I was reading the game thread today, I stumbled upon an interesting conversation between a few posters (cwyers and others) that briefly discussed this topic. What's the worst movie that you have ever seen? And yes, Mystery Science Theatre 3000 movies count. They're much more tolerable that way. Man those guys were funny! I would definitely have to say that the absolute worst film I have had the displeasure of viewing is Manos: The Hands of Fate. So tell us, what's the worst?
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

It's really not about Beckham or soccer.
It’s a coming of age movie about families and growing up and different cultures. Very well written and acted.

Man
I must not be with it, since I didn’t enjoy it. Many of my family members enjoyed it though. BTW my nephew is a huge Beckham fan and his sister is also a very good soccer player (only 10 years old though.) Soccer is pretty big in SoCal, what with Beckham in LA playing for the Galaxy and all.
Just not my cup of tea, I guess.

Hard to beat "Manos", but...
My sentimental choice was always “Wizards of the Demon Sword,” if for no other reason than it gave up and made fun of itself during this post-apocalyptic turd as the heroes venture off to find the “Seer of Robuck”. Tough...
and Talladega Nights almost won but it has to be “Tiptoes.” Gary Oldman, Kate Beckinsale, Matthew McConaughey, and Patricia Arquette. It’s not a great lineup but they’re not half bad. The movie must’ve been a contractual obligation for some of them because its about a guy (McConaughey) who’s family are little people. He isn’t but is a carrier and terrified of getting his g/f pregnant for fear that she’ll have a little person. To top it off, his brother (Gary Oldman) is little so he acts the whole movie…on his KNEES!! Patricia Arquette is dating Peter Dinklage’s character who’s a french snob. To save you all the trouble, in the end Kate Beckinsale ends up with Gary Oldman and has a kid with him. Though I could be mistaken since I tried to shine a laser pointer in my eyes to erase what I had just seen.

As a former movie theater employee...
I’m going to say that the worst movies are…
Extreme Ops (2002 snowboarding movie)
Gigli (Affleck and J-Lo)
Ghostrider (Nic Cage)
and maybe the worst ever…
Catwoman
Talladega Nights was amazing to the right age group, so perhaps take a little perspective.

Michael Caine?
I am too lazy to look it up but if it is the one with Michael Caine it is spectacular. One of those movies that goes around the “suck compass” all the way back around to great.
In this Jaws the shark doesn’t only think but specifically tags people it is going to follow to Hawaii and eat. Yep, the shark follows planes, helicopters, boats, and whatever else it KNOWS his target is on and follows them. Like “No Country for Old Men” but with a fish instead of Javier.
Michael Caine also has been very entertaining about this movie. He did it because he wanted to go to Hawaii on the studios dime.
I reccomend watching with plenty of beer and whatever else may be your personal fun time bad movie thing.

I love “Joe Versus the Volcano”, for both the visuals and its general (bleak) outlook on workaday life. Some of the acting is sub-par, but it did the “vivid primary colors” thang before and better than “Dick Tracy”.

As I responded in a post below, I may give this a 2nd chance
Maybe I was having a bad day the day I went to see it.
Keep in mind the question of this post is “What’s the worst movie that you have ever seen?” not “What’s the worst movie you heard about?”
There are many movies (e.g., Howard the Duck) that I have not seen.
I spent good money on movies my teenage daughters highly recommended as the “funniest mover EVER” that I thought were mindless but fun. Napoleon Dynamite and Superbad are this generation’s cult comedies but not your parents’ Blazing Saddles or Young Frankenstein.

Well, of course, nothing can compare to Mel Brooks' finest work.
For my money, The Producers (original version), Blazing Saddles, and Young Frankenstein are probably the best comedies ever made – and keep in mind that as a 24-year-old I’m probably part of what you’re defining as “this generation”. Too bad Brooks isn’t nearly as funny as he used to be – most of the movies he made in my lifetime aren’t very good IMO.

Con-Air was pretty awful...
…there have been others that have been worse but that’s the first one that came to mind. I thought placing white blankets on the ground for snow in Ravenous was pretty lame but overall I thought the plot was credible enough—eat people and gain their strength—maybe that’s why Bonds can’t get a gig right now did anyone ever think of that? With stricter drug testing he has resorted to eating people to maintain his power.

Interesting and potentially controversial topic!!
for instance, Joe Vs. the Volcano, mentioned above, is one of my favorite films (and it actually has a fairly big cult) but, to each his own.
When I think of truly awful movies-one that immediately comes to mind is the "It’s Pat’ (based on the old Julia Sweeney SNL character)-even watching it on cable was painful.

Worst movie that was supposedly good/won awards.
I liked parts of Syriana. The scenes with Dr. Bashir and Matt Damon were cool. Most of the rest was dull.
But I must call a technical balk on the Sideways criticism. I LOVED that movie. It also made me want to drink gallons of wine.
But my nominees are:
Children of Men — My fiancee and I had just started dating and I picked the movie. Now, she’s walk out and I’d be on the couch if I didn’t go with her.

I loved Children of Men; probably my favorite movie so far this decade. But I’ll avoid that for fear of lapsing into page after page of incoherent rambling.
I thought Million Dollar Baby was pretty bad for all the love it got. It was a great first 2/3, but the last third was just torture (on the viewer and on Eastwood’s character). I may have still appreciated what the movie did with the tragedy if not for the “look at the evil rednecks!” parts. Overall the last third just ruined that movie.

Let's see.
Overall…yeah, Manos was TERRIBLE. I wanted to punch a friend of mine just because he used to live in El Paso, where that movie was made. SO VERY VERY VERY BAD.
Worst movie I’ve seen in the theaters was Nothing But Trouble. I’m still ashamed.
Apart from that…I also have “fond” memories of the day some of my friends got together to watch a movie, and the rest decided that they wanted to see Dungeons & Dragons (despite my vehement opposition.) Let me just say, I was right. It was every bit as bad as I thought it was going to be. And worse still, one of my friends paid actual real money for the DVD.
Before each game, please remember to feed the bats.

Same sort of collolary for “Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within,” which has very little to do with any video games, but isn’t a bad movie in its own regard.

Wasn't the third movie
in that set, Pod People? That was just as bad.
The sex scene in Mitchell with Joe Don Baker and Linda Evans was so gratuitous and bad, I felt like I needed to take a shower afterwards to get the stink off of me. Only Mike and the ’bots were able to save me.
It seemed like the only reason Manos was made was to show a 10 woman pileup for 15 minutes.

High School Musical
I know I’ll catch flak on this, and don’t get me wrong, the kids in this thing are cute and all, but the music in this movie is, to me, the aural equivalent of sticking a hammer drill into my ear (though that may be mildly preferable). There is a story of sorts, but it’s so vapid that the music has to carry it, which as I noted, it most certainly does not…

I have re-considered and I think I change my vote to “Punchline” with Tom Hanks and Sally Field. I guess it’s not Hanks’ fault that he was miscast as a selfish jerk (he just always seems too nice to pull that off well), but the “comedy” in this movie is about as funny as a banking symposium.

I'll expound on my "Manos" experience for you all.
I watched it with my family, the MSC3000 version. The first 30 mins consist of almost entirely driving around in a ’60s Ford Galaxie. Then they introduce Torgo, the most incredible movie villain of all time. His large knees made me laugh every time I saw him. Later in the movie, they show an underground fight between a bunch of women in nightgowns. Overall, the worst/greatest movie ever made. In fact, my dad bought a 1971 blue Ford LTD that looks similar to the car driven in the film and we named it “Manos71,” complete with vanity plates!

You can see the strings holding up the UFOs, and the “acting” is just abysmal. I read somewhere that it was filmed in 5 days, and Bela Lagosi died two days into it, which is why he just walks off the the screen next to a house midway through the film, never to be seen again…

the miniseries was pretty good, but i agree that it’s one of those things that can never really be made into a movie. The theatrical release was way too over-wrought, and turned into almost a cartoon of itself by the end. Still, my sister (who was about 10 when she first saw it) loves the parts with Sting in it, they make her break down in hysterics.

Much of it had to do with financing and disagreements between Lynch and the studio execs. Lynch wanted to do what he does, which would have been great. But the execs were pushing for a more mainstream, Hollywood-type action flick. Netiher side got their way, and the results speak for themselves.

Skatetown USA
A battle of machismo in the roller rink. Scott Baio stars, but wasn’t able to skate well enough to play the “lead,” so they give him all the lead character lines, but instead of being part of the skate off, he acts as sort of an agent for the good guy roller skater – who has to face off against Patrick Swayze as “Ace,” the badass roller skater. Somewhere in there is an incoherent romance with Maureen “Marcia Marcia Marcia” McCormack. I have no idea why they need to have a skate off, but the main plot of the movie takes so little time that they have to intersperse it with little skits featuring the D list of comics (the biggest name being Bill Kirchenbauer – the dad from “Just the Ten of Us” – as the Skatetown doctor) to fill out the 87 minutes. It is both the worst and the funniest movie I’ve ever seen.

Here’s a clip from Manos. I’m not saying it’s the worst movie ever, although it’s on the short list. I’m saying that in order to make the list you have to be really, really stinking bad.

Cwyers,
What would your definition of a bad movie be? Judging by what I’ve read so far, therwe are many different criteria for what makes a movie “bad”.
For instance, I think the Beckham movie is bad, but then again, I don’t like Beckham or soccer, so it comes down to personal taste in a lot of cases.

A regular dude period, he’s great. When he plays the savior of mankind — Waterworld, the Postman, Wyatt Earp — he’s atrocious.

Costner
Is great in two of the best baseball movies ever made—Field of Dreams and Bull Durham. I loved Tin Cup too. You can have Robin Hood—he couldn’t make up his mind what accent to use and I could have lived my entire life without seeing his butt. Dances With Wolves is one of the great modern classics. Its too bad that he’s become a chick movie machine much like Richard Gere.

There's a real acquired taste for the truly awful...
…by which I mean the utter trash that came out of the B-movie studios in the heydey of such. You’re almost really not comparing the same thing at all comparing a misguided Hollywood production to a horror movie shot by amateurs in the space of a week. It’s a completely different level of bad.
It’s the same with literature. Sure, there are some bad novels in print – scores of them, really. But no reputable publishing house would touch anything half as bad as The Eye Of The Argon. Just… wow.

Peter Jackson's "King Kong"
… never seen a movie that actually insults your intelligence ..
1/2 way through watching it on TNT, I shut it off .. the point that done me was watching Jack Black fight giant bugs after seeing Naomi Watts do her trapeze act with T Rexes and the big ape. After all of that, Watts should have been a mangled sack of broken hamburger. The self-righteous seriousness was over the top.
After managing hobbits and orcs, Jackson should have been better. The ONLY scene that rocked was the T Rex fight with Kong. Now that was bad .. the rest of the movie stank.
Well, Next Year is here .. and Jack's century's gotta end some time .. GO CUBBIES!

It was remade in 1998 as
‘A Perfect Murder’ with Mike Douglas. Psycho was also redone and horrible. Again, hate remakes (Although Scarface was pretty damn good, original was with Boris Karloff.)

Quite a bit, really
Cinematography, dialogue, allergory/allusion. I’ll give you that the plot, but it’s not a plot-driven film. It’s more of a mood or tone; it’s more interested in creating a feeling or sensation in the viewer through light/sound/scene instead of story. It’s not my fave of all time, but I thought it was a good piece. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen it though. Wish I could be more specific in its defense.

I hated the use of violence in that movie. It was so heavy, saturated, and bludgeoning that it’s one of two movies (natural Born Killers being the other) that I can honestly say I wish I never saw and think I’m a worse person for having seen it. by cubfanwill on Aug 25, 2008 12:01 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
that was bad
It made me think of another “Dumbest Scene in a Movie”
Batman (1989) Near the end of the movie, the Joker has kidnapped Vicki Vale and is being chased by Batman in his bat-plane. Batman has the Joker targeted in the crosshairs of the weapon system of the bat-plane. Batman fires the weapon, which appear to be 2 wing-mounted fully automatic machine guns. He fires the weapon for, let’s say 5 seconds, but misses the Joker completely. Now the Joker whips out his….what…..it looks like a .38 caliber handgun, with a long barrel? He fires one shot at , oh, maybe 500 yards from his target, and knocks the bat-plane out of the sky.
I know its based on a comic book and all, and I really did enjoy the movie up to this point. But c’mon!! Batman is NOT a superhero! He has NO superpowers other than being super mega-rich and he relies on HI-TECH gadgets to survive.

Machine guns are designed to attack area targets.
I had to fam-fire most of the man-portable automatic weapons that are in use today in the U.S. military, and let me assure you that they’re not all that precise. They’re for when you have a group of people and you’re interested in killing at least some of them.
Now, using a handgun at 500 yards accurately? Absurdist. But you can miss a man-sized target with a machine gun.

I actually left after the first 15 minutes. I dunno, maybe my mood was wrong for it. But the opening seemed out of whack, and the “intro” of the bad guy was ridiculous.

A few come to mind, in no particular order
The Jackal (with Bruce Willis)
Planet of the Apes (the remake not too many years ago)
Judge Dredd
AI: Artificial Intelligence
And these are just ones I have seen – I’ve heard Glitter and Gigli are pretty bad and that one where Jessie Spano from Saved by the Bell is a dancer of some sort. Weird.
There is another one I thought of when I first read this post, but for the life of me I cannot remember it…
Oh and incidentally, this is my first post here. Been lurking a while and enjoying the site – figured I’d break in on something relatively innocuous…hello everyone!

Welcome to our little kingdom.
Yes, the Apes remake was pretty awful but, as I understand it, the ending was truer to original book. On the other hand, the author said he wished he had come up with the Heston ending.

Or you have to order discs. I’m not sure.
by Arbusto on Aug 26, 2008 7:23 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
You can do both
By the way, here’s the two main post-MST3K movie riffing projects by those guys:
Joel, original bots, many other people:
http://www.cinematictitanic.com/
(mocking public domain films, similar to the original show)
Mike, later bots, random guests:
http://www.rifftrax.com/
(mp3s to synch with newer movies they don’t have the rights to)
Both are funny in their own right (or at least no more hit & miss than the original series).
There’s also 50-60 odd DVDs out there, but I’m not sure if they’re still in print.

Sixth Sense is good for exactly one viewing.
But digger deeper the film, like everything he does, is based solely on a twist ending. That’s not good storytelling. Look to people like Christopher Nolan, David Lynch, and David Fincher for films that skew the traditions of the medium but still manage to tell a good story.

Not just pretentious crap, but badly sung, horribly acted, overblown pretentious crap. Spouse sat me down to see it, saying I’d love it. I still haven’t forgiven her for that. I envision my own personal hell to have infinitely repeated showings of that movie. I loathe it with the hottest fire of a thousand suns.
If that doesn’t convince you, let me say I’d watch an Uwe Boll-directed movie before seeing this one again.

Some 80's dance-oriented fielm called Fast Forward
that my ex-gf forced me to watch on more than one occasion. Bad acting, horrible choreography, and outfits that made Richard Simmons look stylish. As a side note, I watched Prom Night a couple nights ago. A thriller that was mediocre at best but definitely not one of the worst movies I’ve seen. Anyways, I decided to check out the Bonus Features…yadda yadda yadda…and during an interview with the movie’s bad guy, Johnathon Schaech, I noticed he was wearing a CUBS shirt, which I thought was pretty awesome.

The thing is
I live alone. It looks like, I’m guessing, it’s been in the making for a while. It was my grandpa’s old guitar (from the mid-fifties I believe) and the pressure the strings exerted on it finally pushed it over the edge. I needed to restring it, anyway. :D
Any idea what a repair like that will run me?

Is there any damage to the body, or did the bridge just pop off?
by McRipper on Aug 26, 2008 2:50 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
No.
The raised area where the string attack came off in an irregular break. The rest of the bridge stayed attached but the lower portion lifts and is obviously coming off. I would assume there is no body damage thankfully. I just didn’t know how fixable this kind of damage was (only had and played the thing less than a year).

by neverAcquiesce on Aug 26, 2008 3:26 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well...
It won’t be too bad. Unless the guitar is some old, classic model, all they’ll probably do is pop it off and will put a new one on it. If its really valuable, you’d probably want to pay the extra to get an original piece put on there. If your not worried about that, you can probably take to a good guitar shop, buy the pieces, and they’ll probably put it on… i’d say for 50 or so bucks. It may be cheaper, but I’d figure to spend around that. Stewart-Macdonald has bridges on there website for 20 bucks, but, you’d want somebody who knows what their doing to mess with it. Here is their website… http://www.stewmac.com/
Just do a search on acoustic bridges.
I’ve built a lot of electrics, but I’d never fixed an acoustic before… so I can’t help you. I know there is a Guitar Center over in Bridgeton. I like their store, so they can probably help you out man! Good luck!

Old Yeller
I hate that movie. Back when I was a six-year-old kid, I had a dog I loved dearly. I went to school one day, it was a treat day for us good students, and they played Old Yeller. I still haven’t recovered from the psychological damage I experienced by watching that boy kill is own dog… or something along those lines. So what if he was foaming at the mouth, my neighbors do that. Plus, I don’t know which version it was… maybe it was the Quentin Tarantino version because it was all violent and stuff. Evil man… pure evil… back in my day, that movie should have been rated PG-13… I wasn’t ready for that. I’d rather watch IT and have had the fear of clowns put into me than the fear of my "best" friend dying.
