That team is full of strikeout machines. Harden, and to a lesses extent Z and Demp, would eat up Mark Reynolds, Chris Young, Adam Dunn, Stephen Drew and Chris Snyder are all going to strike out over 100 times, if they haven’t by now already. Young has 133, Reynolds 163 and Dunn 133. Harden might break Woody’s record if he gets a shot against them.

That was fun

I caught the game between dinner with the mother-in-law and looking at wedding photos. good to see Fukudome get going again, and Jed.

It’s nice to be playing the Indianapolis Ind…er, Pittsburgh Pirates, too. Win tomorrow with Z and sweep on Wednesday.

Headline on ChicagoSports.com ...

Cubs Win Sixth Straight, Pound Pirates

The text of the article had, at one point in time, the same as the headline, 6 in a row. The body has since been fixed to say 3 in a row.

Oops.

Long days and pleasant nights.

in their series preview earlier, they had Marmol down for 17 straight scoreless appearances.

who knew the nationals would win a game?

Starting pitching

The Cubs have a chance to have three starters (Lilly, Zambrano and Dempster) win 15 games and have ERAs under 4 (a bit of a stretch for Lilly but not impossible if he continues to pitch well his last six outings of the year). When is the last time the Cubs (or any team, for that matter) could post three starters with 15 wins and under 4 ERAs? A subject for research.

I'll answer my own question

Last Cub team to have three starters with 15 wins or more and under 4 ERAs, was, fittingly, the 1989 division winning squad. Maddux had 19 wins, Bielecki had 18 and Sutcliffe had 16. The worst ERA of the three was Sutcliffe’s at 3.66. Maddux was at a sparkling 2.95.

Probably some other team did it between then and now, but I don’t have time to look.

Those 90's Atlanta teams

Wow, here’s one for you. The ’93 one was impressive, and I think ’96 too.

1998 Braves Starting Five (apologies for the formatting)

                                           ERA W L

SP Greg Maddux 2.22 18 9
SP *Tom Glavine 2.47 20 6
SP *Denny Neagle 3.55 16 11
SP Kevin Millwood 4.08 17 8
SP John Smoltz 2.90 17 3

Thanks

for doing that research. I should have thought of the 90’s Braves rotation. That 1998 starting five has to rank among the finest in history. Too bad Milwood couldn’t get his ERA down a little to keep it under four -then it would be one for the records!

Why not Marshall......

AFAIC……Cotts can go w/ Eyre and Howry to wherever they go…..

The best defense is a good offense
