Which Cubs jersey should I ask for?

Well, I have a birthday coming up (Oct. 1), so I've decided to make the committment and ask for an authentic jersey for my birthday.

However, I wanted to get some input from the BCB community as to whom I should commit to on the back of the jersey.  Personally, I'm partial to asking for a road 1984 Cubs jersey with the big 23 on the back, since Ryno was my hero growing up.

I figure since there's no way Ryno can sign with another team, I can't be hurt with that jersey.  I'd feel bad wearing an authentic jersey of a guy who's no longer on the team in 1-2 years, so keep that in mind.

So, give me your suggestions - I'm open to whatever you want to throw my way, whether it's Theriot, Fontenot (I could probably fit into a game-used one of his) or Woody, just give me some ideas.

Gracias.

I agree

I’d go with one of the 4 retired numbers.

I have a....

road Sandberg and a home Grace. I would be lost without them. Grace signed the jersey at the Cubs Convention, so that has been retired.

I am going for a Reed Johnson for a current guy.

I'd go with Sandberg

Like you said, you know he’s not going to be playing for anyone else.

If I had to pick from one of the retired numbers

it’d be Santo. I already have a replica Wood jersey.

You could always get a Piniella jersey. I’d bet that if we win it all, his number might get retired.

Go with one of the classics - Ryno all the way

You never know what’s gonna happen to any particular current player – I made the mistake of buying a Nomar jersey a few years back and now it’s an embarassment to wear it to the ballpark. The ‘84 road unis are terrific-looking, especially with the NL East Champs sleeve patch, and I think you can’t go wrong with Ryno.

I also do like drewishdrewid’s Piniella suggestion, especially since this is probably his last managerial job anywhere.

Lots of good choices

You can’t miss with one of the retired numbers or any historic Cubs figure for that matter. Of the current rosters my choices would be:
Woody- has been the only consistent face on the team for 10 years
Z- current contract expires when he is eligible for AARP
Soriano- as above
Soto- he will be around for a few years given his years of service
Lee/ Rami/ Dome- all solid choices
Anyone else is rolling the dice on their longterm future with the Cubs.

Way back... outta here!!!

they also sell Sandberg in the bright blue

but those jerseys are before my time as a Cubs fan – the ’84 ones are my first real memories of a Cubs team, which is why that sticks with me so much.

No.

Cubs ditched the light blues after ‘81, Sandberg’s first season in Chicago was ’82. The Phillies did have light blue road jerseys when Ryno was with them in ’81, though.

Putting your name on the back of a jersey

Is the equivalent of wearing a tshirt that has the band of the concert you are at on it. I would go with the ’69 santo or banks jersey, those are just classics

I'm not sure

how “uncool” it is, but I would never do it. Part of the fun is being able to wear a jersey of your favorite player. I doubt I would get as many compliments/comments if my #31 Jenkins flannel said “Silva” on the back.

I have one...

My wife bought me a jersey with my name and No.1 on it as a Christmas gift a few years ago. The reason was that at my wedding, I got my two groomsmen customized jerseys with their names on it, but didn’t get one for myself. So she did.

I really don’t give a rip if it is “cool” or not. I don’t wear a jersey to be cool, I wear it to support the team that I root for. I truly don’t care if it bugs other fans. They should get a life. It’s my jersey, it can have my name on it.

Went with Rami myself last Christmas.

I’ve just had an affinity for him ever since he came over in ‘03, and having played third base myself, really connected with him. And I figured, if he plays somewhere else before he retires, I’ll always remember him as a Cub.

That was Crane Kenney's call.

He told me it was a mistake. He was going for “tradition” but discovered: people didn’t really want it, and also far fewer jerseys were sold. Who wants one with just “5” on it?

I just got the 84 Sandberg Jersey this year

The authentic one is the one with the 84 Eastern Division Champions Patch On it. You can get it without the patch for about 100 dollars cheaper I believe. The Jersey is awesome but it is pricey.

I also own a Woody Jersey and a Onedec jersey (formerly known as a Nomar Jersey). That is the only saving grace of the year or two when they went to no names on the home jersey. I thought I would be cool and buy the real thing. I can now recycle that 5 Jersey and maybe just maybe a really great Cub will come along and wear #5. I can at least wear it to games today when we are going against lefties….

I got an authentic Lee gray road jersey

for my first Father’s Day. I figure that even if Lee ends up playing for another team, he’s still going to be a beloved Cub. (Plus, I like the #25. I used to wear it as a kid.) If you go with someone like Lee, Soriano, Zambrano or Ramirez, those guys are going to be remembered as Cubs for a long time after they’re no longer on the team. I remember people wearing Wayne Gretzky and Luc Robataille LA Kings jerseys while they were playing for other teams—no one thought those jerseys were out-of-date, they just said the guy wearing them was old-school cool. (Of course, Luc would come back to the Kings to finish his career.)

My advice...

just get a plain, authentic, home blue-pinstripe jersey without a name.

Really, we’re all just rooting for laundry anyway (Carlin?) and no matter who’s name is on the back, your allegiance is to the logo on the front, right?

But if you absolutely need a name, then go with a retired legend. They’ll never switch teams on you rendering the jersey obsolete.
