I hereby motion that:
We as a members of the BleedCubbieBlue institution will not post any "Magic Numbers" until the Chicago Cubs' "Magic Number" for making the playoffs is no greater than 10.

Acceptable "Magic Number" postings will be the following (if appropriate): 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0.

[Badger Amendment] The "Magic Number" cannot be posted in the month of August, regardless of how low it may be.

On a personal note. It is interesting that 50% of folks agree that we shouldn't mention the "Magic Number" until at lease 15 games out or less. And 50% think it should be 20 games or more.

I wonder if a fair compromise between the two sides would be 15 games.

Just a suggestion.

Why we need the magic number

Since I started this discussion, I thought I should make one point: We need to stop being such weenies about this.

Few people have suffered with the Cubs more than I have. I lost a 50-cent bet in the sixth grade in 1969 to Kenny Fell, who called me a sucker. I didn’t even watch the fifth game in 1984, because I knew what was going to happen (and my screaming at the TV set when Frey walked Tony Gwynn to pitch to Steve Garvey is legendary). I was at the 18-16 game, where Mike Schmidt hit four home runs. So if I’m ready to act like a fan of a legitimate major league team, all of us should be.

Does anyone honestly believe that posting the number will affect the outcome of the season?

Only for the purposes of discussions and amendments and submit that the maximum should be raised to 20.

That is the standard for other sites. Yahoo.com and MLB.com began putting the Angels’ magic number when it hit 20.

I can’t emphasize this enough.

There are no goats.

There has only been horrid management, behind-the-times thinking and failure to respond to adversity. Bartman is a goofy footnote if any one of six players or managers react better.

We do nothing differently than any other fanbase. The Angels started at 20. The Yankees and Sox would as well.

Let’s hope there’s 4 moments this season. One playoff clinching, one divisional series win, one NLCS win and one world series win.

Let Al be the one to post the big time celebration thread. We can celebrate in the game threads but let’s wait for Al to come home and post the big main one before going all goofy in the fanposts.

(on a related note let’s hope we’re waiting for Al to come home. Wouldn’t it be great if all 4 were at Wrigley? Although I kind of like the idea of watching the buses come down the expressway).

I do believe this is Al’s site, and so therefore, we follow Al’s rules. In essence – it’s his ball, and if we want to play we follow his rules or he’ll take it home and nobody gets to play.

I do remember back in 2006 when the team from st louis posted their magic number on the official mlb site, but then took a nosedive and it didn’t change for a few days. I had actually copied that to my pictures just in case I could use it in a post, but alas, I think they won. Not sure, 2005-2006 postseasons are a little fuzzy for me.

Your motion is not winning...

Even if right now (5:20 CDT) it has the most votes, the majority (nearly 57%) want the magic number countdown to begin before it reaches 10.

If you had allowed people vote for not posting the magic number at all (do not assume anything until we are at 0) or until it reaches 5, then the people supporting your motion would have probably been even smaller.

I'd like to know

which people in the poll said ‘I don’t care about the baseball gods’ and send them a reminder to make proper offerings to said gods. They can be cruel, vindictive and have had Cub teams squarely in their crosshairs waaaaay too long. Let’s make peace and NOT stir ’em up!

BCB poster DaBard was knocked unconscious earlier today by a wayward foul ball hit by a young boy taking batting practice with his Dad at an area park. When reached for comment, DaBard said, “It was crazy. The angle and trajectory of the ball was one in a million. It’s almost like the Baseball Gods themselves guided the thing directly to my exposed cranium. Of course, I don’t believe the Baseball Gods, but…well, on second thought…” DaBard is expected to make a full recovery.

BCB poster cubswynn was knocked unconscious earlier today by a wayward foul ball hit by a young boy taking batting practice with his Dad at an area park. Just then, the window of his hospital room was shattered by an impossibly long home run hit during a pickup game at a local sandlot. The ball richocheted around the room several times before landing squarely in cubswynn’s groin. His full recovery is now in question.

Shouldn't the magic number be for clinching the division?

We can sugercoat it anyway we want to by saying “you just need to make the playoffs” and that’s fine if you make a strong push at the end of the season to make the Wild Card . . . But if the Cubs blow a 5 game lead in the final month of the season that will mean we are probably not playing good baseball going into the playoffs . . . And historically, the team that plays the best in September, advances in the playoffs . . . So I say we focus on the Cubs winning the division and use that as our Magic Number . . .
