New pitcher Craig Hansen

has 9BB and 3K in 10innings!

The critical thing to understand is that major-league pitchers don't appear to have the ability to prevent hits on balls in play. There are many possible reasons why this is the case, and I don't really have a concrete idea as to why it is.

But the one thing I do know is that it is the case.

what's going on?

2008 Cubs: Who needs nine innings, when you only need a 7th?

by Chanman25 on Aug 26, 2008 9:44 PM CDT reply actions

Ugly, but...

effective. The checkmark is in the W column. I was at this game, drove over from Columbus, oHIo…. My losing streak at PNC and the Great American (ahem!) Ballpark is finally over. I think it’s 6 straight games at either park that the Cubs had lost going into tonight’s game.

Things didn’t look too promising from the moment I got into the ballpark. Zambrano didn’t look right warming up in the ‘pen. And it carried over into the game. His fastball had no life on it for the most part. He finally starting hitting above 90 on the gun in the 4th inning, but by then he had already thrown a lot of pitches. I’m glad the guys got him off the hook, but I’m sure he’s not happy with himself. He just didn’t look right, I hope he’s not hurt and not saying anything.

But, they kept clawing back, to which I give a lot of credit. I also think this Pirates team can be something really good with a little pitching. They really rake the ball, spraying singles and extra-base hits all over the field.

OK, it’s 3:30 in the morning and I drove 6 hours and sat through a 4 hour game without a cigarette. It’s time for bed.

First, though, I’d like to introduce myself to BCB. I’m the Original Dave and I have the proof: http://blog.theoriginaldave.com . I grew up in the north suburbs of Chicago, and now reside in Columbus, OH. I’m fairly new to BCB, and just wanted to say ‘ello. This is really a great forum for Cubs fans to hang out and chat. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading Al’s insights, and the comments are just awesome. There’s a lot of baseball knowledge on here, for which I’m thankful I found this place.

Thanks for reading, and Go Cubs Go!

Long days and pleasant nights.
