Pregame Thread: Cubs vs. Pirates, Tuesday 8/26, 6:05 CT
Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh Pirates, Aug 26, 2008 6:05 PM CDT
There's only one bit of info I want to share up here today. If the Cubs win tonight, they will have won the series, and thus 10 straight series, for the first time since '07.
NINETEEN-O-SEVEN.
Making history every day. This is the best Cub team in my lifetime, and maybe a lifetime before that. Savor every moment.
| Today's Starting Pitchers | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Ian Snell threw well in his last start. To which I say, "Good for him." Snell's ERA has been over 6 for much of the last month; he's 1-5, 6.31 lifetime vs. the Cubs, including this game on August 3 at Wrigley Field, (a rematch of a game vs. Z) where he allowed seven hits and three walks over four innings. The Cubs won the game after Snell was gone. Alfonso Soriano is 7-for-15 (3 HR) vs. Snell; Jim Edmonds and Ronny Cedeno have both homered off him and even Z is 2-for 4, including a RBI double in the 8/3 game.
As for Z, he seems back on track after his last outing. He's 6-1, 3.47 in 11 career starts at PNC Park, including this May 23 game, which, oddly, had the same score as last night's. Jason Bay used to hit Z real well, but he's with the Red Sox now. The only current Pirate who has homered off Z is Brandon Moss, who did so in that August 3 game, the only run Z allowed that day.
Today's game is on WGN and FSN Pittsburgh, so it should be available nationally via EI. Also see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

Once again, a reminder that you can find the overflow comment threads, including the first pitch thread, on the right sidebar of both the front page and any interior page in the box headed "RECENT STORIES IN GAME THREADS". Today's first pitch thread posts at 6 pm CT, and the overflow comment threads will post at 7 pm, 8 pm and 8:45 pm CT.
Discuss amongst yourselves.

I have a really good feeling about the game today
Not to mention I have a bad feeling about tomorrow’s game, so a win tonight would be real nice.

Eh. Marquis gets a bum rap I think.
33-23 over the last 2 years when he starts. Every team would like that from its 5th starter.

He is exactly what we need from a 5 starter
Still frustrates me to watch him pitch. When guys get on base he gets so scared of the strike zone that it ends up hurting him more.

Why the hell is tomorrow's game at 11:35 CT?
Seriously. They can’t even fill up 1/4 of the ballpark in Pittsburgh on a Saturday night… yet, they want to schedule a 12:35 ET start on a Wednesday afternoon in late August?
What the hell were they thinking? There MIGHT be 8,000 people there, all wearing Cubbie Blue.

We play a night game Thursday anyway
So… look at it this way. We have to play tonight, finish our game around 10:00 ET, and then have to be at the park early in the morning to get ready for tomorrow’s super early start.

They won’t take BP tomorrow; I suspect they’ll all arrive at the park around 10 am ET. Hardly “super early”.

LOL. That's way to early for the turnstyles in PNC to work.
They had a lousy 14,500 last night. Let’s see what they get on a Wed afternoon at 12:35 for a team that’s 24 games out of 1st place.

Wrong
As pointed out in the fanpost, that article doesn’t say he’s one of the 5, just that he was one of the original 9 that had approved books. The article doesn’t say anything new at all.
There is no place like Nebraska - Go Huskers!
by sanantonecub on Aug 26, 2008 3:39 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not necessarily.
The article says:
Major League Baseball in June sent out financial books on the three properties to nine preapproved bidders.
The list reportedly included a group headed by John Canning, chairman of private equity firm Madison Dearborn Partners LLC; Internet billionaire and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban; and the family of online brokerage Ameritrade’s founder, Joe Ricketts.
People familiar with the process — who declined to be named because of confidentiality agreements — told The Associated Press after the deadline for initial bids passed July 18 that Tribune had narrowed the field to five.
Now, that implies that Canning was part of the ORIGINAL nine, but it doesn’t specifically say he’s part of the remaining list.

Selig could pull an end-around
and put Canning with another group to increase the overall bid.
In a new ownership group, Canning could still be the head, and Selig would still get his friend ownership of the Cubs.

The reason the Big Ten Network doesn't work...
…is because outside of football and men’s basketball, there’s nothing to watch. And I’m still paying for the crappy, crappy, programming. It’s a landmark in that a college conference has its own network, and for me – a UW alum that lives in the heart of Big 12 country – I love going to my local bar and watching the Badgers whup the likes of Akron Zips (!), but it’s not a perfect system.

Who's down?
Michigan, arguably. Indiana possibly (although that’s assuming that Hardy is a huge absence). Illinois maybe (on the Mendenhall loss impacting them). And Iowa will maybe tread water (no running back, spotty QB).
Everyone else is better. MSU, Minnesota (hard to be worse than last year), Northwestern, Penn State, Wisconsin, Ohio State, probably Purdue. I’m telling you, the Big Ten will be tough this year…..but Northwestern will be toughest.

by cubswynn on Aug 26, 2008 5:01 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Oh, really?
Garbage that has won more Big Ten football championships since 1993 (when Penn State joined) than any other team save Michigan and Ohio State (NU is tied with Wisconsin at 3 titles in that time — oh yeah, Iowa only has 2)?
Garbage that has a .500 or better record against 6 of the other 10 conference teams since 1995? (Only OSU, Michigan, Penn State, and Purdue have a winning record against NU in that time period. NU is up on Iowa 6-5 in that period).
Garbage that is tied with Penn State for the sixth best record in conference play over the past 5 years at 19-21 (ahead of Minnesota, Michigan State, Indiana, and Illinois)?
Or the garbage that is going into Kinnick on September 27th and will run rampant over the punchless, directionless Hawkeyes?
Cause I like all that garbage.

Al,
what’s this I hear about Jim Edmonds not hustling out of the box on his triple last night? He stood there and admired it. The only reason he got the triple was because of the carom. He should have had an inside the park home run. Everyone would have ripped Soriano for that and I don’t get the bias. Edmonds gets way too much of a free pass around here.

Nope
As impressive as DeRosa’s and Soto’s numbers are, consider this: The Cubs’ No. 7 spot in the order was hitting a major-league best .310 with 20 homers and 83 RBI (entering play Monday).
No. 8: .293 with 11 and 64.
And perhaps most impressive of all: The pitchers’ spot, No. 9, was hitting better (.227-8-52) than four American League teams — Kansas City (.226), the Los Angeles Angels (.226), Baltimore (.225) and Oakland (.218).

1.83 WHIP for Snell....
that is almost 2 runners per inning….with this club that could mean bases loaded a few times…….his nickname in the showers is probably Shelled

Snell found success in his last start
by establishing the inside corner early and often, to set up his slider away. So there’s something to look for tonight.

my thoughts on instant replay
I don’t want instant replay and not for the reason of it lenghtens games (I don’t believe it will). My reasons are a little different than what I have read here but here we go.
1) There are so many plays in baseball that can go either way that end up changing a games outcome, so why only review one aspect. Granted HR’s are the most game changing at that moment, but its such a small percentage of wrong calls.
2) After 162 games I understand that a team could miss out on the wildcard or a division title by 1 game. But if your team can’t overcome bad luck to overcome this one bad luck game where a call is wrong on a HR you don’t deserve it. You get numerous chances in a season to make up for this.
Now your all saying well in the playoffs you only have a very small margin for error and a bad luck game could cost you. But also in the playoffs you have 6 umpires, a change I would make is instead of the fifth and sixth umpires standing half way down the line they stand at the wall and look up the foul pole like NFL officials do on field goals and balls hit in the gap they run to the gaps (no out of shape umpires allowed). This would have allowed them to clearly see the Jeffery Maier (spelling?) play.
3) I also worry that its going to change the way a play is called by an umpire (just look at the NFL they totally change how they call the games with instant replay). Lets say an umpire calls a ball fair that was close to being gone but he wasn’t sure, then we go back and look at the replay and its not 100% clear if it was a hr because the best camera angle’s camera man moved a little slow, or a family reunion all decided to wear white to the game and blurred the ball. I know far fetched, but the possibility still exists that they don’t get all the calls right. And if there not all right its not completely fair for every team.
4) I also disagree with starting it midseason, john kruk just said this on sportscenter, if you don’t get it right all year then you run the risk of screwing a team by overturning a call late in the year or not overturning a call early in the year so a team could get hosed.
Basically I am against it also because it might and probably will lead to more instant replay, and I stick to my thoughts of if you arn’t going to get them all right, why only get some of them right. And we can’t review fair/foul out/safe because of the baserunning outcomes, there is just too many scenarios to give a small guide of where to place baserunners.
oh and let the 9 year old play.
