OT: Favorite/best movies of all time???

After the recent success of the "Worst movies of all time" fanpost (400+ comments and a recommend award), I thought I would start this fanpost.  It's interesting to see what everybody would put as their favorites, who knows, maybe somebody's favorite showed up on the Worst fanpost.  Use whatever criteria you want.  For me, my favorite movies are ones I can watch over and over and never get sick of.  A little entertainment before the game this evening.  I'll start with mine:

Favorite Movies of All-Time:

Predator, Glory, The Shawshank Redemption, Rounders, Terminator 2, Friday, Dumb and Dumber, Me Myself and Irene, Major League, The Sandlot

That's all I can think of right now.  How about it?  What say u?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

So many choices...

Shawshank Redepmtion – Anytime this movie is on I can watch it. Even in the same day. Never gets old.

Gladiator. Love it.

Saving Private Ryan

Napoleon Dynamite – so strange but still genius in its oddity

The Dark Knight

There is only one

BLAZING SADDLES

If the world didn't suck we would all fall off.

Memento

Not even close. Never have I seen a movie that I can continue to watch over and over and still piece together. Simply brilliant.

A few others:
Seven
Fight Club
The Shawshank Redemption
Shaun of the Dead
Hard Candy
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Requiem for a Dream
American Psycho

Memento is super good.

Hott Fuzz would be another one up there wish Shaun.

Yeah, I really enjoyed Hot Fuzz

and their show Spaced for that matter. But Shaun was just such a perfect movie. I can literally watch it anytime. Looking forward to the end of their “trilogy” with The World’s End.

I'm still a sucker for Field of Dreams

and I’m not ashamed to tear up at the end.

Aside from that, Blazing Saddles and Gladiator round it out for me.

Field of Dreams is still my all-time favorite too.

I took my son to the field in Iowa and can’t wait to go back. I could watch that movie once a month.

This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.

Field of Dreams still seems to be intact. They held a Fergie Jenkins Day there last Sunday, as reported in this newspaper story:

http://www.thonline.com/article.cfm?id=213593

The web site for the field is at:

http://www.fieldofdreamsmoviesite.com/

A property line cut the field in half. One of the owners returned their portion of the field for crops, but after one year restored it. There had been two competing souvenir stands and two web sites, one for each owner. Recently one owner bought out the other, so now there is a single owner and web site.

Can't stand Return Of The Jedi...

I hate how the Ewoks win…and yeah…I know that it shows all all sorts of creatures can rise up and defeat the Empire, but it still feels dumb.

The entire movie is very rushed, but it has some great lines.

The Empire Strikes Back is my favorite of the series.

"Your eyes can decieve you. Don't trust them." Obi-Wan Kenobi, the first sabermetrician...

by Curtain Jerker on Aug 26, 2008 2:51 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

There is no topping Empire

It is the best of the series, but A New Hope isn’t too far behind. I was fairly young when Jedi came out, so the Ewoks never bothered me too much. If they had been the Wookies that Lucas had originally planned for, I would probably have a higher opinion of it in general.

You have to view Empire as part of a larger whole.

You can’t go into clean like you can with A New Hope. That said, I have an unhealthy love of those movies. Prequels, too. There, I said it.

Zoolander...BASEketball? Oy vey...

Here’s the Top 10 list, in order

1) Godfather — I will accept no argument otherwise. You are all wrong
2) Shawshank Redemption — The most re-watchable movie ever
3) Casablanca — A treasure trove
4) Raiders of the Lost Ark — The standard by which all action movies are judged
5) Bull Durham — If you think this is a baseball movie, watch it again
6) Godfather II — Almost as good as the first one
7) Schindler’s List — Should be mandatory viewing
8) Pulp Fiction — So good that everyone, including Tarantino, tried to copy it
9) From Russia With Love — The epitome of cool
10) Groundhog Day — The most underrated great movie ever

Agree on Stiller and Farrell

and Carrey and Sandler, too.

Superheroes, though…I still have a soft spot for Superman 2, Iron Man, Batman Begins, and the original Spidey. Mystery Men kinda grew on me, too. You’re right, though, it’s a bit of overload.

But, man, I hope they got the Watchmen movie right.

Film guy

I will refrain from commenting on some in others post, as I do not wish to offend. But man, some of these are making me cringe.

Great Movies:
The Graduate
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Brazil
Cool Hand Luke
L.A. Confidential
Chinatown
Kill Bill 1&2
Citizen Kane
The Third Man
The Bicycle Thief
The Godfather 1 (2 is way overrated)
Rushmore
The Royal Tennenbaums
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Jaws
Rocky
Red (of the Red, White, and Blue trilogy)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Barry Lyndon
The Shining
This is Spinal Tap
The Sting
Dr. Strangelove
Tarnation
Glengarry Glen Ross
Unforgiven
The Player
Get Carter (Mike Hodges please, no Stallone)

As far as movies that are fun to watch, but I wouldn’t put it the class above
Groundhog Day
Idiocracy
Lord of the Rings
Star Wars (the new ones don’t count)
The Hustler
The Color of Money
Back to The Future 1&2
Life Aquatic
Pulp Fiction
Bad Santa
Bull Durham
Hot Fuzz
The Incredibles
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
The Big Lebowski
Leon: The Professional
Spiderman 1&2
The Dark Knight
The Thomas Crown Affair (new one is actually better than original)
Lolita
Ghostbusters
The Blues Brothers (I have an awesome anecdote on this)
The Shawshank Redemption
Time Bandits
Goodfellas
The Departed
Badlands
Straw Dogs

I could really go on for a while. I should note that I own virtually all of these, so most of my list is limited to what I see on my shelf.

Agree, some of the choices are cringeworthy (no doubt some of mine, included)

But, hey, the thread does say ‘Favorite’, too.

I love the movies that you watch so many times you can quote chapter and verse from them. Mine that immediately come to mind are Ghostbusters, The Blues Brothers, and Casablanca.

BTW, nice lists…you mentioned a few I need to dust off and see again (Cool Hand Luke being one).

I'm a sucker for

any cheesy comedies from the 80’s. Caddyshack, Stripes, Blues Brothers—these are my favorites to watch over and over. Any early Mel Brooks especially Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, History of the World Part I and the Producers. These aren’t the best of all time, but the ones I’ll sit and watch and never get tired of. The highest quality movies I’ve ever seen include the first two Godfather movies, Goodfellas, Shawshank Redemption, the first Rocky (stop looking at me funny—it won for best picture), Unforgiven, Dark Knight, Ben Hur, Spartacus, Gladiator—too many to list as far as I’m concerned. These are great little OT posts to keep us from completely losing our minds over the game, thanks for these.

These are great little OT posts to keep us from completely losing our minds over the game, thanks for these.

I like obscure movies

so some of this list will likely mean nothing to anyone but me. In no particular order…

Life of Oharu
Ten
Taste of Cherry
Bull Durham
Borat (laughed so hard I couldn’t see the screen)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Dr. Strangelove

Documentaries:

Grey Gardens and anything by Maysles brothers
Heartworn Highways
Grizzly Man
Capturing the Friedmans

That’s enough for now :-)

and I have to say, the whole designing and ordering the invitations process was one major headache. But I will tell you this – seeing as how our reception will be at Wrigley Field, one of the best moments of this whole planning process was writing “1060 W. Addison” on that invitation. Thought of the Blues Brothers every time…

I think it's brilliant

It’s one of those movies that proves a point about violence in films by giving audiences what they want, in a way that makes them realize that it wasn’t what they wanted at all. By not having any clear good guys or bad guys, you end up with an ugly situation that just gets out of control, removing all of the fantasy and romantic elements from the action-thriller and showing what violence really gets you – a lot of blood and no true winners.

Other movies that I thought did something similar (violent films that make great points about violence in films) were History of Violence and Funny Games.

I've always hated that criticism

“Overrated” seems like a lazy word to throw at something. What does it tell you about that thing? Maybe it’s the best movie in the world, but if people are saying that it cures cancer and washes your dishes and never needs winding because it’s so freaking good, then it’s overrated even if it is awesome.

Incidentally we must have watched different movies, because I thought There Will Be Blood was one of the best films of the decade.

As far as films that I’ve never thought deserved the accolades they received: Crash, Forrest Gump, Chicago, and Shakespeare in Love are all weak or downright terrible movies (razzle dazzle!) which won best picture over much better stuff.

by Wreckard on Aug 26, 2008 2:58 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well

before I saw that movie, I heard from many people what a great movie it was. I was pretty pumped about seeing it and it just didn’t do anything for me. Now, Daniel Day-Lewis was phenomenal in that movie and I think that his performance outshines the movie ten fold. It just seemed to be missing something to me. I didn’t get it.

by McRipper on Aug 26, 2008 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

What I loved about that movie

You have to remember that it’s based on an Upton Sinclair book, so the source material is an allegory for the evils of capitalism. Each character very obviously represents all of the cogs in the wheel (Plainview: capitalism, Eli: religion, the son: family, etc).

What makes the film so brilliant is that it’s able to keep the original allegory intact while still making the characters believable and compelling. It makes Sinclair’s point without being heavy handed, preachy, or using characters who simply served the purpose of furthering the plot.

That and it was gorgeous to look at, the music was incredible, and perfectly acted.

by Wreckard on Aug 26, 2008 4:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Shakespeare in Love wasn't a bad movie

it’s just that Saving Private Ryan was good on a much higher level and that Miramax’s Oscar campaign got so much blame that SiL’s gotten a lot of undeserved backlash, I think.

I agree that “Overrated” is much less interesting than doing an “Underrated” list. I’ll nominate Munich as the most underrated movie in the past 5, maybe even 10, years (noting that I’ve seen hardly any movie in the theater over the past year after the baby was born). Clarifying what I mean by “underrated” – a movie has to be seen to be underrated, so a movie like The Lives of Others, which is one of the best I’ve seen recently, doesn’t make my “underrated” list so much as a “why aren’t people rating this movie at all” list.

The author of this post is not a certified scout, doctor, agent, statistician, manager, or journalist, nor was he ever a very good player, though he tried very hard to be like Ryne Sandberg and was about as scrappy as it gets (in T-ball). by DGU on Aug 26, 2008 3:06 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's the best of those 4, I'll grant you that

The other 3 are bad, bad movies. SiL is a solid if unremarkable romantic comedy set on a very interesting backdrop. But when “Life is Beautiful” and “The Thin Red Line” are nominated against you, it stands out as a travesty.

It’s funny because I’m the opposite of you when it comes to Spielberg – to me he’s the definition of overrated. Saving Private Ryan is nothing more than a simple action script with extremely, extremely good production value. As a film it didn’t say anything new at all about war, unlike its counterparts that year (the two I mentioned before). While I think he’s technically excellent I just don’t ever find him saying anything all that interesting with his films. Even Schindler’s List struck me as weak and safe artistically (as opposed to Life is Beautiful, which makes a lot more difficult and moving of a statement on the subject matter).

But that just goes to show – overrated is even more in the eye of the beholder than just beauty. Not only does it factor your perception into it, but your perception of other people’s perception. It’s a silly debate.

And agreed – Lives of Others is a brilliant movie. We just watched that the other night.

by Wreckard on Aug 26, 2008 3:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Can Spielberg be both overrated and underrated at the same time?

With the exception of Saving Private Ryan, I’ve tended to be a bigger fan of Spielberg’s lesser appreciated movies than his more popular ones. (I liked A.I, and love Minority Report.) I also think Spielberg tends to play around with the same theme over and over again (fatherhood), which gets tedious. Munich was different, though, and I think, Spielberg’s best movie.

Anyway, I agree SPR’s plot was uncomplicated, but, in that sense, neither is any journey story complicated, from Huck Finn to Heart of Darkness. In that sense, SPR was, to me, a kind of foil to Apocalypse Now. AN took a journey that showed war as madness leading to nihilism. SPR took a journey that through madness led to brotherhood, the foundation of the good kind of patriotism. In a generation where patriotism is often viewed skeptically, it may not be a new message, but that doesn’t mean it’s not meaningful or a good journey to take.

Well, sort of

See I like him best when he sticks to what he’s good at – making smart, perfectly assembled action films. And for that he’s underrated.

It’s when he tries to make “important” films (Amistad, Saving Private Ryan, etc) that he tends to make these empty films that make safe points painted in broad strokes.

So, as an action director it’s impossible to overrate him. As a brilliant artist with important things to say… well, that’s another story.

by Wreckard on Aug 26, 2008 4:51 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm fine if we're nearing the point of agreetodisagree

but it seems to me that Munich did not make safe points, that, in fact, it was criticized quite a bit for its politics.

I didn’t like Amistad, and I say this despite being a huge fan of John Quincey Adams.

I’d also argue that showing honor in war and that a just war, even despite its brutality, can be good and worth memorializing was a theme Hollywood hadn’t really been tackling in a serious way post-Vietnam until SPR. In a certain sense, a movie that says, “War is Meaningless” is both safer and more overdone.

Yes and No

Dark Knight is a very good one.

Batman Begins was pretty mediocre. Any movie that sports the line ‘I gotta get me on of those’ just can’t be a great one.

I like ‘V for Vendetta’, but I don’t put it in a ‘great’ movie class, it’s another solid fun one.

I should say that not all superhero/comic movies are bad, I like Spiderman 1&2, the original Batman, and some of Sin City. But the likes of Fantastic 4, Spiderman 3, X-Men 1 and 3 (I actually liked 2) etc. are all bad movies that fans totally overblow and give studios the excuse to green-light that trash.

Oh, Patton - what a fine movie - and one I had forgotten.

The author of this post is not a certified scout, doctor, agent, statistician, manager, or journalist, nor was he ever a very good player, though he tried very hard to be like Ryne Sandberg and was about as scrappy as it gets (in T-ball). Any opinion expressed above should in no way be confused with fact, truth, or reality and is hereby qualified in the following ways: 1) The author does not know as much about baseball as Lou Piniella. 2) The author does not know as much about baseball as Jim Hendry. 3) The author does not know as much about baseball as either Dusty or Darren Baker.

Here's a bit of a list.

Wow, from the lists of movies, it looks like a lot of younger people frequent on this site.

As you’ll be able to tell, I’m a big fan of ‘classic’ movies.

North by Northwest (Hitchcock and Grant, friggin’ great).
Angels with Dirty Faces (Love Cagney and will watch anything with him in it).
Casablanca (Same for Bogey, watch anything he did).
Godfather (One of the all time best).
Citizen Kane (top 5 all time)
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (hahahahahha)
Apocalypse Now (Intense).
To Kill A Mockingbird (Peck did a superb job).
Vertigo (Hitchcock and Stewart, more great cinema).
The Manchurian Candidate (1962) (Great thriller, blows the recent remake out of the water).
Duck Soup (Rufus T. Firefly: I got a good mind to join a club and beat you over the head with it).
The French Connection (Love Hackman)
Arsenic and Old Lace (Another Hitchcock and Grant classic. Peter Lore and Raymond Massey are great as well).

If you haven’t seen all the movies on the list above, you should take the time to watch them all at least once.

I’ll also sit and watch and old spaghetti western with Eastwood (especially like ‘A Fistful of Dollars’) or some of the old John Wayne flicks. Also love any Marx Brothers, Laurel and Hardy, Stooges type stuff as well).

After I hit a home run I had a habit of running the bases with my head down. I figured the pitcher already felt bad enough without me showing him up rounding the bases. ~Mickey Mantle

Rear Window and Vertigo - it doesn't get much better than those.

If you had to pick one….?

I would have to

go with Rear Window. The combination of all the characters on essentialy one set. Each character in the adjacent apartments were unique, but most importantly Grace Kelly. She was class and beauty.

Sneakers (1992)

If you haven’t seen it, go out and rent/Netflix it. If you hate it, I’ll let you charge my Paypal acct. for the rental fee :)

Also, while not a film seen in theaters, Randy Pausch’s Last Lecture from CMU is the most impactful piece of media I have ever seen.

Robert Redford, Sidney Poitier and Dan Aykroyd. Had a few other big names in it but can’t come up with them off the top of my head. Pretty decent ‘thriller’. Definitely worth a rental…

called “the sasquatch gang”—made by some people who worked on napoleon dynamite. not the same, but it’s pretty hilarious.

“can’t hardly wait” is kind of a guilty pleasure… one of the better teen movies out there.

i also love amelie, garden state, napoleon dynamite, little miss sunshine, and my favorite movie is ferris bueller’s day off.
