Cubs Postgame Show: Mariotti Resigns from Sun-Times

Haven't seen or heard anything else about this, they just reported it on cubs central postgame show.

Can't imagine too many people will be sad to see him go.  While I think he is a capable sports writer, I think most share my opinion that he has long been unfairly hostile towards the cubs and cubs fans - especially poking fun at the 100-yr World Series situation...whatever.  I'd like to see everyone's thoughts on Jay and his decision to leave Chicago.

Good luck i guess, jay, and here's to positive enforcement for our Cubbies!  Whan an INSANE GAME TONIGHT!!!! 14-9, wow...

Hooray!

What a great day.

The critical thing to understand is that major-league pitchers don't appear to have the ability to prevent hits on balls in play. There are many possible reasons why this is the case, and I don't really have a concrete idea as to why it is.

But the one thing I do know is that it is the case.

true it is

http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/chi-080826mariotti-resigns,1,1156930.story

sounds like he only recently discovered that the print media is no longer possible…I guess he must not read the Sun-Times business section too often (or any business section, considering the rather broad coverage of the decline of the newspaper industry.) so he’s quitting and going to try to find a job with a website. with all the turmoil at espn.com, I’m guessing he’s going to angle for a job there, considering his prior relationship doing tv stuff.

I never thought he was unfairly hostile to Cubs fans...it's more like he was hostile

towards everyone. I can’t imagine that many of his peers respect him after his B.S. antics where he tried o justify his crusade against Ozzie by claiming his peers were essentially Ozzie’s bootlicks. Maybe he got a better gig elsewhere, but I have to think that his divisiveness towards his peers and his glaring prejudice led to this.

by DudeVf11 on Aug 26, 2008 11:14 PM CDT reply actions

I agree with this.

His job was to stir up controversy, and the fact that we are talking about him proves that he actually did it well.

The Sun-Times, already in trouble, will miss him. The rest of us, not so much.

This.

As much as I disagreed w/ many of his opinions I’d be lying if I said his article wasn’t my first Times read every morning. He pushed the enveloped w/ every column and people ate it up. And despite his departure, let’s not forget the Times already has someone waiting in the wings to stir something new up everyday in Greg Couch. And FWIW, he did seem to have his Cubby chubby out for the majority of this year. But this had to be expected, seeing as even his fellow columnists were anxious to engage in fisticuffs w/ him. That being said, I say Good Riddance.

Has to be a story behind the story..

just today he was picking a new feud with Jerry Angelo, since Rex is banished to the bench.

I didn’t care enough to find out which rock he crawled out from under, but I always thought he was perfect for New York (not at all Midwestern).

And now Telander can take his rightful spot as undisputed lead sports columnist at the Times…

He's from Pennsylvania

He also went to school in Ohio, and has ties to ESPN, Cincinnati and Denver.

If I had to guess, I’d say he’s done in Chicago given his rivalry with multiple members of the White Sox.

He wont be back in Denver, as he once called John Elway a punk and received death threats.

I’d guess he’ll find his way either a.) onto ESPN Radio, b.) ESPN TV doing stuff for some of the various 2nd tier shows, or c.) The Big Ten Network.

(I checked wikipedia because I was curious, I didnt know that off the top of my head.)

Story behind the story

is probably not as sexy as you think. I’m going to guess he’s headed toward the end of a contract. He probably was well-compensated. Perhaps a renewal would have been at a much lower rate. The S-T is in terrible shape. It might be gone within a year or two. The Trib and the Herald (probably Southtown, too) will be the remaining dailies in Chicago.

So, why go down with a sinking newspaper? He’s getting out while he can.

Everybody here wants to read ‘feuds,’ ‘rivalry’ and the like, but that’s not reality. The failing newsprint business is the real story, and the S-T will eventually be a casualty.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Aug 27, 2008 11:21 AM CDT up reply actions

according to the story in the trib...

he had just signed a three year extension with the s-t

by tootle on Aug 27, 2008 11:25 AM CDT up reply actions

That, and not everyone wants to read 'feuds', etc...

I hate tabloid journalism. Though I’ll admit there’s a fair chance I’m in the minority here.

Just a couple of years ago the S-T investigative unit was en fuego with exposing various and sundry local corruption “Operation Silver Shovel”, city hall hiring practices, the hired truck scam, etc. Guess those days are over now, it’s been awhile.

I knew you’d never get that in the Trib because they need to be in bed with Daley and Co. to get stuff like more night games, the bleacher expansion.

Local politics aside, I think the S-T could manage to outlive even the Trib, just because of the fix the Tribune will be in when Zell finishes selling off every profit-making subsidiary of the company (and then leaves the hollow husk of the newspaper business in the hands of the employees)…

But we’ll see.

by The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street on Aug 27, 2008 2:56 PM CDT up reply actions

wow - if the Trib is in bed with Daley and Co...

…then John Kass must be the proverbial red-headed step-child who is locked out of the house every night and is forced to sleep in the garage.

I realize in theory that a newspaper is not suppose to hold sway over the writings of their columnists, but I would guess that if the Trib is in bed with Daley as you suggest, the Trib would have found some way over the years to tone down, handcuff or otherwise constrain Kass’ efforts. Have you read his columns? He is one royal PITA to just about everyone in the Daley administration. Not bad for a Sox fan…. ;-)

Contracts, as I have learned

are made to be broken. I’m sure Mariotti’s agent had plenty of ‘out’ clauses written into his deal, since the paper’s a sinking ship.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Aug 28, 2008 12:20 PM CDT up reply actions

i'm sad...i actually liked marioti

He spoke his mind and didn’t care what others thought. Nowadays too many people worry about offending others or the outlash of fans who don’t agree with things that are said. Mariotti could care less if you were a cubs fan, a sox fan, a bears owner or anything; if you did something wrong in his eyes, he would tell the world about it. So i hope Mariotti gets back on his feet and does well. Good luck to him.

by aznsensation on Aug 27, 2008 2:26 AM CDT reply actions

There's a difference between...

…speaking your mind using a well-reasoned argument and blurting out anything you feel will get a rise out of people, whether it’s supported or not. I get the sense most people here (and at both Chicago ball parks, apparently) feel he did the latter rather than the former.

by daubs on Aug 27, 2008 7:55 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree...

…and I always felt a journalist has an obligation to investigate the truth (reasonably) before they write something. Nothing wrong with giving an opinion, but if that opinion is void of any attempt at getting the facts, than you really are just a tabloid writer trying to get a reaction.

He did what he was supposed to do, and IMO, what he did required a heck of a lot less talent and integrity than those that don’t let the facts get in the way of a good story.

Rumor has it...

… that he bailed because he thinks the Sun-Times is about to fold. He had just signed a three-year contract extension. I’m guessing he wanted out to look for other work because his Sun-Times money was or is about to end.

It's hard to disagree.

I suppose I was taking umbrage with the idea that someone who simply “spoke his mind and didn’t care what others thought” was worthy of admiration more than commenting on the sort of job Mariotti did. You’re right — he did the job he was paid to do, and did it well.

He excelled at war mongering in sports writing and didn't care if he offended anyone...

…on this I agree. But he wasn’t objective and his gross exaggerations and prejudices devalued his independent aspect.

I am not a fan of Angelo, Reinsdorf or Guillen, but I se no value in carrying a sportswriter’s personal feud with them through his story and to such an extreme. A writer should have some credibility even if he wants to be taken seriously as an editorial or as satire. Mariotti quickly moves to demonizing and staying there regardless of how foolish he appears and how many times he contradicts himself. A writer must have some degree of integrity and credibility if he expects people to view him as the “conscience” for something.

Marriotti could not go to TV and do what say a Jim Rome does. If Chris Everett had punched out Rome that day it wouldn’t have changed how Rome did his job, and he’s one of the rare guys who is respected by athletes in general and still does not pander for their approval. Mariotti will just hide behind the camera and call people names.

My guess is that for all of his bashing of China, that the Chinese Government recognized true propaganda talent and made him and offer that he couldn’t refuse. He’ll soon have a story line in Beijing denouncing America and the capitalist pigs of the world.

before I spent the time to make my (pointedly nonpolitical) closing remarks. But, yeah, DLee’s comments were a little disappointing. I’m guessing he’s an Obama supporter, though, and was just trying to cut him some slack. DLee did add:

“I think we have great fans and they love baseball.”

According to deadspin.com

www.deadspin.com

Mariotti had a hissy fit. He wanted to write about Obama’s comments on Cubs fans, but the S-T folks said it was Rick Telander’s turn to write and Telander wanted to write on Obama.

Mariotti’s story is that the Sun-Times is dying, and may be folding by the end of the year. www.thebiglead.com

He was asked why he’d resign now, when there was a possibility of a Cubs-White Sox series.

He said:
1) How do you know the Sun-Times will be here then?
2) How do you know I won’t be somewhere else?

He resigned AFTER signing a lucrative contract and apparently with no buyout package. If you believe this was some major epiphany about newspapers and Internet, you’re mistaken.

This was a hissy fit. He probably thought the paper wouldn’t take his resignation.

Pluto will always be a planet to me!

I personally like Mariotti

Yea he is kind of a jagbag but he is one of the best writers in the country. Most people, whether you like to admit it or not, pick up the newspaper and read his article first. Why?? Because what he has to say is a) what is going on at that very moment, no long term grudges or love, he writes what he sees at the moment, and b) he is saying what is in the back of alot of peoples minds, which is why people are always arguin over what he says, he grabs peoples attention and causes debate. That is a sign of a great journalist.
And for all the people who think that he just likes to bash the cubs, turn around and look what he does with the white sox. The same thing, but he does give the teams love when they deserve it, while pointing out a few negative aspects of the ballclub. Thats just a chicago sports fan who is a great writer, we are all cubs fans but alot of people hate on things that are going on even in a great season, so he is no different then alot of people here, other then the fact that he is a great writer.

I wish Mariotti the best of luck, I hope to continue seeing him on Around The Horn at the very least.
