Pregame Thread: Cubs vs. Pirates, Wednesday 8/27, 11:35 CT
Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh Pirates, Aug 27, 2008 11:35 AM CDT
You'll note the 90% chance of rain mentioned in the box above. Based on this NWS radar loop, it doesn't look too good. This is the last meeting of the year between the Pirates and Cubs and they have no common off days the rest of the season. Thus, if they can't play today, they'd hold this game till the end of the season and only play it if it had postseason implications.
| Today's Starting Pitchers | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Zach Duke is 0-2 with a 5.91 ERA vs. the Cubs this year in four starts and that includes this April 9 game in which he gave up only 1 run in 7 innings and the Cubs eventually won in 15. In the other three games he's pitched vs. the Cubs this year, his ERA is 8.16. D-Lee (.313), A-Ram (.344), Alfonso Soriano (.571) and Reed Johnson (.500) all have monstrously good BA's vs. Duke. Hit him early, hard and often.
Jason Marquis has also started four times vs. Pittsburgh this year and is 2-1, 3.47, and that includes a decent outing in the August 1 loss at Wrigley Field when he gave up 3 runs in 6 innings and Jeff Karstens shut the Cubs down. The only Pirate he really has to watch out for is Jason Michaels, who in a small-sample-size six AB has four hits including a HR that produced all three runs on August 1.
Today's game is on CSN Chicago -- no Pittsburgh TV, so EI viewers will see Len & Bob. Also see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

Que Tal in Cleveland
Is in my mind the best burrito chain around. Sadly it’s in Cleveland, Ohio. The only thing I miss about living in that city is their burritos… And Cleveland of all places you’d think they’d have nothing good.
Cleveland's got plenty of good things - at least when I was there
I left in 1990 but still have many fond food memories of the city and surrounding burbs. Like the wings at Around The Corner and the heaviest, sinfulest cheesecake ever from Corky & Lenny’s. Of course, if you like your cheesecake light, there was Max & Erma’s on the west side. The Farmers Market was awesome as was the Great Lakes Brewery – don’t know if they’re still around.
And nothing, I mean nothing, beats the smell of Presti’s doughnuts being made at 3:30 in the morning when you’re trying to find your way back home from a night in the Flats and various adventures along the way…

A question for you....
How many times has he been removed in the 3rd inning?
Answer: Zero. In fact, he hasn’t made it to the 5th only once this season. That was June 26th versus Baltimore.
People need to accept him for what he is, a very good #5 pitcher.
I want 5 aces
Current temperature in hell: 44 degrees F - and falling!
No - I want 5 REAL aces
Healthy too
Current temperature in hell: 44 degrees F - and falling!
I agree that...
…as a No. 5, Marquis is perfectly acceptable. I think he bothers many people because: a) He makes too much money (which is really neither here nor there, because it’s a sunk cost at this point), and b) He’s blocking other, younger pitchers, who may have more upside, from taking that spot.
I’m pretty much neutral about Marquis at this point. He’s not going anywhere, so the Cubs might as well use him.
Yes, sir!
Biggest reason
His whining.

and you know what
everyone says that they hate his contract……so what if he’s overpaid? has that prevented spendry to sign someone he wanted? i can’t think of one
good point
that’s the underlining reason i don’t personally like him, but he helps the cubs win so i give him the benefit of the doubt
Other than maybe Marshall
I can’t think of any younger pitcher that would be ready for that spot right now. Marshall also still has to show more durability before I write him in as a season long starting pitcher.
Come on ripete, you know its our nature
to complain about everyone on the roster. We want every Cub to bat 1.000 and every pitcher to strikeout every batter. And dammit, we’re going to tell you how we can get Lou to make it happen!

but Marquis does catch a lot of flak here so somebody has to stand up for him.
Yes he is overpaid but as a #5 he is good and durable. Look around the league and see some of the pitchers that other teams have used on occasion this year. How has Colon worked out for the Red Sox?

Most of what appears on it is just “ground clutter”. This is a much clearer image… seems like they’ll start the game on time, but it’s hard to say if it’ll be completed.

Needing a break?
This is meant with all due respect to baseball players, since I haven’t played since I was in Little League. What exactly does giving a player the day off do? I guess on a hot day it can make a difference. But mostly (once again—no offense intended!) the players, except the catcher and pitcher, just stand around. They’re not running up and down a basketball court, or slamming into 300+ pound football players. Is it mostly a mental thing?

Do they have their own for the feed, or are they using the home team’s broadcast?

Own cameras
to be directly fed to a private MLB screening room in New York’s headquarters.
Evey Hammond: Vi Veri Veniversum Vivus Vici. V: By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.
Are they
high-definition cameras. That’s the only type that would make sense since seeing the little ball with all the colored shirts in the background is virtually impossible on standard TV. At least that is my experience thus far when they try and show replays of questionable home runs to us fans at home.

I apologize. I was wrong. I thought I read that somewhere, but I just started looking to make sure...
…from ESPN.com:
Video from available broadcast feeds — not every team televises every game — will be collected at the office of Major League Baseball Advanced Media in New York, where it will be monitored by a technician and either an umpire supervisor or a retired umpire. If the crew chief at a game decides replay needs to be checked, umpires will leave the field, technicians at MLBAM will show umpires the video and the crew chief will make the call, overturning the original decision only if there is “clear and convincing evidence.”
And from NJ.com:
In cases when those things are in question, the umpire crew chief will determine whether the play should be reviewed. If he decides that it should, the umpires will leave the field to review the play on TV monitors that have been installed in locked boxes just off the field in all 30 major-league parks this week.
At the New York headquarters of Major League Baseball Advanced Media, replay officials (a technician and either an umpire supervisor or a retired umpire) will collect all the appropriate video feeds, and the technician will transmit them to the crew chief at the ballpark.
The umpire supervisor or retired umpire will not be in direct communication with the crew chief, who will have sole power to overturn the original call if he finds “clear and convincing evidence.”
I guess they are going to use local feeds. Sorry bout the misinformation.
Dan

I hope this game
is not as long as last nights was. I hope the game threads are not as cranky as they were last night too. If nothing else this team has taught us to never count them out.
GeoMyHero
Did anyone else notice that at the crack of the bat of his HR that Geo was absolutely flying out of the batter’s box. He was sitting on the pitch and crushed it. Because he hit it to the deepest part of the park it’s possible he may have thought it would stay inside the park but I loved the way he put his head down and just started gunning it towards first. By the time the ball got out, he actually was putting his gear on in the dugout. Ok maybe not, but this guy never ceases to amaze me. Aside from his career night at the plate, I thought he was magnificent behind the plate, trapping wild pitches, nearly throwing out 2 runners, and doing his best to calm Z (at least he tried). Not that I wasn’t a huge fan before but this guy truly won me over last night.
Go All In and Enjoy The Ride.
His flying out of the
batters box is one of the reasons I love Geo. He does it every time. Bob has mentioned this a few times during the games.
my hope is that he upgrades his
throwout percentage. i haven’t checked, but i’d like to see runners less interested in running on him.
should come with experience.
Brenly was talking about the first steal last night
and was claiming Theriot was reaching out to catch it and then sweeping over for the tag, whereas if he let the ball come to his hand over the bag it’d get there faster. Not really Geo’s fault.

He was never really healthy here. I liked him too. He has been kind
of snake-bitten his whole career. I remember when he pulled a hammy after making the team in his first season. They said that he sat in front of his locker and cried for a hour. A real good kid.

DEBATE: Geo locked up the NL ROY last night
I have a hard time believing anyone else can beat him out unless he has a horrid September- and give his PCL MVP recognition last year, he would seem to have the “consistency” side of the equation worked out pretty well.
Hard to believe earlier this season he had that run of consecutive at bats where he struck out.

Zambrano threw a shutout that night, and Soto remarked that he could care less about the strikeouts since the team had won and the pitchers threw well.

Heads up on MLBTV
They supposedly have a 5 day trial going right now. The site says that you have 5 days to cancel without being charged. I signed up this morning to watch the game here at work. Well, I just checked my bank account and I was already charged the $19.95. I have now been on the phone to India for 15min to try to get my money back. Funny how they take it right away but I wont get it back for 10-15 business days…
Either way, I just wanted to let all of my fellow Cubs fans know about this before you sign up for this “Trial Offer”. Just know what to expect.
I was issued a warning for the Obama post.
Apparently I am responsible for everything you guys say. So say whatever you want, there’s no personal responsibility for you. I will be the one who takes the fall.
If the FanPost was so bad, why was it left up so long, and why did you even comment on it? Then, only after certain people take it too far, do you discipline them? No. You delete my FanPost and issue ME the warning. Al, I know you have my e-mail. You’ve used it before. You could have e-mailed me if you wanted to, and I would have replied. You didn’t even try.
I thought it was time to come back but obviously I was wrong. I’m unwelcome here. I don’t warrant the decency of a simple e-mail or a notification that a FanPost might be iffy – instead you wait, even commenting on the post yourself, and later, only when a few bad apples try to ruin it, do you stop them or delete their comments? Nope, you warn me for the actions of others. I regret that I don’t enjoy coming here anymore. I’d be surprised if I ever come back.
I’ll miss all of you who I came back here to see. Sorry it didn’t work out. Hopefully, I’ll be thinking of you in October.
