The Cubs will, potentially, be part of baseball history tonight as the Cubs/Phillies game will be the first to be eligible to use replay technology for disputed HR calls. There are two other first-games-of-series tonight, Twins/A's and Rangers/Angels, that will be eligible, but both of those start after the Cubs game. The rest of baseball will start with this tomorrow.

Of course, we may not see any such disputed calls for weeks or months. I'm all for doing this, as long as it is limited to HR calls only. Presuming they can do it as they claim:

[MLB VP of Baseball Operations Jimmie Lee] Solomon expects the whole process, from initiation to official ruling, to take approximately two and a half minutes. And he doesn't anticipate it to slow the pace of the game.

... it should run smoothly.

Cole Hamels shut the Cubs out for seven innings and gave up only one hit in a 7-1 Phillies win on April 12. He's one of the best lefties in the majors and also won two starts vs. the Cubs last year. Only Ryan Theriot (5-for-11, a HR) and Aramis Ramirez (4-for-11, a triple, a HR) have had any success vs. Hamels among current Cubs. The one part of Hamels' game that shows a bit of weakness is homers -- he's allowed 24, tied for sixth-most in the NL.

Ryan Dempster is 3-3, 4.98 in 12 career starts vs. Philly. To which I say: "So what?" The last of those starts was more than five years ago on July 28, 2003. Only Jimmy Rollins and Pat Burrell remain from that Phillies team. Both of those players have hit Dempster well, so if he can keep them down, he should have pretty good luck against the rest of the Phils.

Not such a good thing.

While the Cubs score more than the Phils, the Phils are more reliant on home runs, making a windy day probably better for them. They are stacked with power hitting lefties, so lets hope that Demp has his best sinking fastball today. Fly balls could spell big trouble for Demp tonight.

I bet my college professor $10 we take 3/4 or more this series

This is the big game, IMO. Blanton, Myers, and Moyer feel like “stop gaps” to me, as in they aren’t pitching to win…they are pitching to not lose. And with our top 4 guys throwing this weekend, I don’t see anything less than 3/4. Dempster at home, under the lights, I think this is gonna be a fun game tonight.

Myers would be the only other one I worry about

He’s thrown pretty well since coming back from the minors, going 5-0. But still, tonight’s the marquee matchup, and I think a win tonight sets the tone for taking 3-of-4.

I agree about Blanton and Moyer,

but Myers is back on his game. He has been excellent since his call up, though the only truly tough offense he has faced is St. Louis, and that was at their house, where oddly enough they are worse offensively.
Anyhow, the Cubs have the pitching advantage in every game and should take the series.

by dakoose on Aug 28, 2008 3:29 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Blanton is a flyball pitcher.

I think the Cubs can handle him, especially with Harden facing him.

I'd say you're a shade optimistic.

I ran some numbers over at GROTA. I think the Cubs have a 54% chance to win today, 66% tomorrow, 53% after that and 52% for the series finale. That’s taking pitching matchups into consideration.

what would the numbers say....

if it were webb vs. our top 3? if you have the time.

by tim815 on Aug 28, 2008 3:54 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You think Webb will pitch the first three games of a series by himself?

I think he’ll be rather tired out by then. Really you’re looking at Webb, Haren and Johnson. If Johnson is still healthy by then. And then you’ve got to model lineups as well.

I’ll try and look at it, but I don’t have Excel at work and the prediction spreadsheet is a real bear to operate right now. (I’m hoping to have it automated at some point.)

i have this (ir)rational fear of webb

and i’m not sure who we’ll trot out in game one. a solid argument can be made for all 3.

The Cubs can play small ball now, no worries

This isn’t a team that relies on the bloop and the blast, exclusively. Often times with Webb, the key is building an inning, and I think this year, our offense has shown an ability to do that.

Plus, it’s August 28. Let’s not worry about postseason opponents until mid-to-late September.

Let's take a quick look.

No regression, no park effects, no accounting for any sampling issues.

Cubs have scored 5.48 RPG, D-Backs 4.60. So we have the clear edge there.

When you model win percentage based on runs scored and runs allowed, you have to factor in unearned runs. Webb is an extreme ground ball pitcher, and thus allows unearned runs at a rate higher than league average, so ERA overrates him a bit. His RA of 3.39 is very good, but Harden’s is strictly better at 2.14.

Doing a simply Pythagorean win expectation, when Harden’s pitching with the Cubs lineup behind him, you’d expect a win .844 percent of the time against an average opponent. With Webb pitching with the D-Backs lineup, you estimate a .634 win percentage. I’ll cheat a bit and use the straight line log5 method:

.500 + .844 – .634 = .710

So… oh wait I forgot home field advantage!

.500 + .884 – .634 = .750

Cubs would be expected to win a Harden-Webb matchup 75% of the time.

Certainly those figures could be refined a bit, which is the whole point of having the Predict-A-Tron. But I wouldn’t worry overly much about Webb.

They have a BAD lineup.

Okay, so not Padres or Mariners bad. But not exactly “good” either – certainly below average once you factor in their home park.

And seriously, folks, all of you should be asking for “We have Rich Harden and you don’t” t-shirts for Christmas.

by cwyers on Aug 28, 2008 5:04 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think this assumes

a Webb/Harden Game 1 match-up, no? I don’t think this is probable. We’ve discussed it before, but I just don’t see Lou telling Z he doesn’t have confidence in him…and giving the ball to the guy that’s been on the team for 6 weeks. To each his own.

Carlos seems to routinely outpitch any FIP-based metric...

…which is what I used in the Predict-A-Tron. One of the dozen or so things I’m hoping to have ironed out by the times the playoffs rolls around are full Marcels projections for all pitchers, which I have, I just need to integrate into the spreadsheet.

by gwood on Aug 28, 2008 4:40 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I tend to speak in shorthand a lot.

It’s like wandering into the middle of a conversation – anyone who I’ve talked with before (like dtpollitt) has probably heard me explain FIP a dozen or so times. The basic idea is that you take a look at walks, strikeouts and homers and try to predict a pitcher’s future ERA/RA. The reason you look at the so-called “Three True Outcomes” is that a pitcher has more control over those than, say, their rate of hits on balls in play.

hey while you're here can i ask a question?

how good is BP’s “Defensive Efficency” as a metric for evaluating a team defense?

I know you’ve said you like RZR (i think), but is Def Eff any good?

I've always used zone, FWIW

by dtpollitt on Aug 28, 2008 4:45 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I like RZR, but you have to factor in OOZ plays.

RZR and ZR both have strengths and weaknesses.

As far as Defensive Efficency, it’s from one of Bill James’ old Annuals, IIRC. It’s just the reverse of BABIP, or 1 – BABIP, really; essentially, the percentage of batted balls (AB-K) converted into outs. Nothing wrong with it, except that you can’t directly apply it to individual fielders.

All a zone rating system is is a personalized version of a DER, with the numerator as plays made and the denominator as “chances.”

by cwyers on Aug 28, 2008 4:47 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

So, depending

on how “chances” is defined, every rating could be different and it becomes more of a personal preference?

When you're eight games behind, it's like eight miles; when you're eight games in front, it's like eight inches. ~ Ron Santo

by gwood on Aug 28, 2008 4:50 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Only two companies compile zone rating...

…STATS, Inc. and Baseball Information Solutions. Chances are defined by whether a ball is “in zone.” Both of them have charts of the field that define what the zones are, and they all use multiple scorers per game to eliminate bias.

Chris Dial, who used to work for STATS, goes over the ZR zones and how they are defined. A chart is included.

There is, however, more uncertainty in ZR data than, say, hitting data. And so a larger sample is preferable.

by cwyers on Aug 28, 2008 4:53 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

okay.

I was wondering if it was a reasonable metric to go by, but i’m kinda new to this so i figured the best way to tell was to ask.

That's the goal.

Right now I’ve got essentially two spreadsheets – one that’s set up to predict the rest of the season, ignoring pitching matchups, and another that’s set to work for a three-four game set. I could theoretically do the entire rest of the season in the full Predict-A-Tron, but it would probably take me several hours just to figure out the pitching matchups for the rest of the season, and I’m not sure how accurate that list would be.

Thanks.

I’ll make a trip there before the game and then crawl into The Dugout (a dive bar next to the L) for a few drinks before the game. Coincidentally, this is my only friend (that’s currently around) that’s a Cubs fan. I was born and raised on the Southside and grew up w/ the most typical bitter Sox fans around (why are they still my friends?). Anyways, they epitomized the concept of inferiority complex. One of them is a bartender at a bar down the street from my old house. I posed this as a fanpost couple weeks ago but this is an ad for their bar. Check it out.

Cubs remain #1 in SI's Power Rankings
With Carlos Zambrano mired in his worst month of the season (7.43 ERA in five August starts), it has become increasingly clear who the true ace of Chicago’s staff is: Ryan Dempster. (Midseason addition Rich Harden doesn’t qualify due to a limited sample size with Chicago.) Dempster said in spring training that the Cubs would win the World Series, and he’s sure doing his part to meet that prediction. The starter-turned-closer-turned-started is 15-5 with a 2.85 ERA and 1.17 WHIP. He has yielded three runs or less in 23 of his 27 starts. “He’s been our MVP,” Mark DeRosa told the Chicago Sun-Times. “He is by far the most important person in this clubhouse.”
Ryan Dempster = potential 20-game winner. Who’d?a thunk it?
