The Dark Cloud Hanging Over Season
This season has been fantastic to watch and enjoy as a fan, but perhaps I am the only one with a gnawing tinge of fear over another short, opening round playoff series against Arizona - which is how things are shaping up most likely.
I believe that history is relevant until it isn't, and frankly these guys have killed us for several years. Their anemic offense seems to pep up just enough against us, but the offense is hardly the issue -- i don't see how we can get past Webb, Harden and Randy Johnson (whom we have never beat) in a short series. And add Cub-killer Adam Dunn to a mediocre lineup and they have enough firepower to score against us.
The Cubs have a great team, but drawing Arizona in a short series is an utter nightmare versus the opportunity to play teams far weaker in a 5 game series format (Mets, Philly, Dodgers). To me, Arizona is the absolute worst team we can draw.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, editor-in-chief (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves.
The one advantage we have is to have the first two games at home. Remember, the Cubs swept the D-backs at home in May — and beat Haren in the first of the three.

I swear Al...
its almost as if some people are so afraid of the Diamondback (who were..ahem… just swept by the Padres…), that they would rather we just tank the rest of the season and squeak in as the WC team so we can play “easier teams”.

Did I just fall out of the
twilight zone or something? The Cubs have the best record in base ball for a reason. The Diamondbacks are a .500 team at best. Sure they have 2 great pitchers, but we have a couple of descent arms too. I have heard enough this crap about Webb and Harden. Last year was last year. The D-backs were a charmed team that caught us at the right time. We couldn’t get Augie Ojeada out for Gods sake.

no worries
Even if we did draw the D-backs in the NLDS, we’ll have a better chance than year. Remember, our three games were pitched by Zambrano, Lilly, and Hill. I think Zambrano, Dempster, and Harden (in whatever order) present a much tougher matchup for the D-back hitters.
And don’t be so quick to assume that Arizona will be the team…the Rockies are now within striking distance, and the Dodgers aren’t as bad as they’ve been playing.

On the pitching. Pitching is what wins in playoffs (see White Sox in 05). We have amazing starters and a great bullpen. Z/Demp/Harden will give us a solid 6, Gaudin/Samardzija in the 7th, Marmol in the 8th, and Wood in the 9th. Sign, sealed, delivered.

I'm not so much afraid of the D'Backs themselves...
…as I am of Chase Field and, perhaps, Randy Johnson. I realize this is completely irrational, but there just seems to be some awful mojo clinging to both entities (one human, one…architectural?). I just feel like that’s not the case with the Dodgers.
That said, if/when the Cubs get there, I believe this team will go into kill mode and can get the job done against anyone.

Hopefully celebrations will be relative to the milestone accomplished.

But...
You don’t need to be 4 deep in a 5 game series. Webb can come back for game 4. And lets dissect our sweep of them earlier this year:
We did beat Haren 3-1 (he gave up only 2 runs in 7 innings)
We beat Matt Scherzer
We beat Edgar Gonzalez
Purty darn confident we will not be seeing either of the two latter guys in the playoffs. In the two games we faced their playoff pitchers (Haren and Randy Johnson) we managed 2 runs in 14 IP. I’m not losing sleep but please, let’s not assign any value to our sweep of them against their B pitchers.

I just don't get it
You face good pitching in the playoffs. EVERY GAME. The teams that get to the playoffs make it there for a reason.
So, with that being said, would you rather have:
A. Arguably the best (certainly one of the best), starting rotation 1-4 (5th starter not needed), a rock solid bullpen, and an offense that is in the top 3 in just about every meaningful category, OR
B. Some team not named the Cubs.

I would have no problem...
…facing Arizona.
Here is my thought; if they are that good, why haven’t they won more games with such great pitchers? The answer is because they are not a very complete team like the Cubs are this year, but were not last year.
I would match up Dempster, Harden and Z with any top 3 in baseball and feel good pitting the Cub’s starting lineup against anyone as well. I understand those three guys are scary on paper, but if the Cub’s pitchers pitch to their capabilities, they should be fine outplaying these guys.

is this person being serious?
i agree that they are a dangerous team but lets be real here, they are not that great of a team. Sure you have Webb and Haren (i’m not even going to mention Randy Johnson because he doesn’t deserve to be mentioned) but the Cubs also have Dempster and Harden and even Zambrano (when he’s on he’s on). What this post tells me is that you don’t have any confidence in Dempster and Harden. I sure do so i’m not truly worried. I’m also so sick of how everybody loves the big 3 of Arizona. What about our Cubs? I would choose our three any day over any team in the league. Harden is a number 1 starter. Zambrano is a number 1 starter when he’s good and Dempster can sure as hell be a number 1 starter just look at the way he’s pitched this year.

Just out of curiousoty,
Does anyone here believe in fate?
It’s obvious that some definitely don’t. I don’t know if I do or not but sometimes it just seems like some things are either meant to be or they aren’t.
Looking at it that way, it wouldn’t matter who the Cubs play. If it’s meant to be it’s meant to be.
I keep thinking about the 100 year curse. Here it is…100 years…and the Cubs have pretty much been in charge the whole way.
Could it be that this is the year, no matter what?

I'm kind of in the middle
As a famous President once said, “I do not believe in a fate that will fall on us no matter what we do. I believe in a fate that will fall on us if we do nothing.” Judging from the results of the season so far, I’d say the Cubs have done plenty. I now have zero fear about this team—none. I am living my life in a daily walk with peace and joy, and it is fantastic. Is this God’s way of telling me “It’s Gonna Happen?” I prefer to say it this way:
“It’s Happening.”

All you can do
is wait and see. It’s tense, I’m sure, but why not relax. It’ll happen no matter what you do.
I admit (and don’t take this the wrong way) that I’m saying this from a whole different mindset than you guys (the loyal Cub fans).
The Cardinals haven’t been as frustrating as the Cubs have. They get to the playoffs pretty often. So I guess it might sound funny for me to say “relax”.
I can’t truly relate to how it must feel there in Chicago. It must be pretty exciting and at the same time pretty gut wrenching. I feel for you and I hope the Cubs not only go all the way but do it in grand, convincing fashion.
I only wish I could go to Chicago if they do.

If the Cubs continue to play ball like tonight ..
.. as they’ve done all season, I don’t care who we face in the playoffs.
I’d kind of LOVE to see the D Backs back among us .. because we will OWN them this year. And I think the Cubs would love to get payback and redemption at the same time. And the snarky jerks from AZ who snuck on here last October would be left with their pants down around their big hairy ankles .. and the morons who sat behind home plate and waved into the camera all night long would get a line drive foul smacked by DeRosa right through the net into their midst to break their cell phones .. and the bases would be clogged all through the season ..
And Dusty Baker gets released and can’t wangle a deal for post season color commentary.
All this and watching both the Mets and the Cards twist in the wind … ahhhhh, life can be so grand sometimes ..

If we have to go against the d-bags starting 3 then we just need to follow last night game plan, Have our starter kept things close then we light up thier bullpen.
AZ has a great 1-2-3, but so do we. Plus we have a better bullpen, better hitters, better manager, we’d have games 1,2 and 5 (if nedded) at home

Look at the stats
I can’t remember where I read it recently, but the stats of Webb, Haren, and Johnson agains the Cubs are phenomenal. Johnson has dominated the Cubs over his lifetime to give him the third best record against a team ever.
I understand the argument that today’s diamondbacks aren’t the same as last year, but don’t act as if there is no reason to not want to play them.

They are closer to first right now than they were on this date a year ago.

If Arizona were in the Central
They’d be battling Houston for 4th place, 15.5 games behind the Cubs. They have some really good starting pitchers, but not much else. The Cubs have some really good starting pitchers, a shutdown bullpen (most of the time), are first in the NL in runs scored AND runs allowed, lead the league in OBP, BA, OPS, etc, etc, etc and are still playing just BELOW they’re expected win/loss. They are far and away the most balanced team in baseball. You win in the playoffs with good pitching. The Cubs have that in spades. They can also score runs. As of today, they’ve scored 735 runs. The next highest is 660. You might be able to hold them down for a while, but you’re not always going to have a top line pitcher on the mound. AZ might be able to out scrap the Cubs for one game, but I’d give anyone betting on the snakes 5-1 odds.
