Minor League Wrap--August 2
Welcome to the all-new Minor League Wrap and forum for new dads! (Moms welcome too!)
Iowa Cubs
The I-Cubs lost to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, 9-5.
J. R. Mathes started and got the loss. Mathes allowed six runs on nine hits and two walks over six innings. Mathes struck out three.
Josh Kroeger fell one base short of the cycle as Kroeger went 4 for 4 with two doubles and his 13th home run of the season. Kroeger had two RBI.
Micah Hoffpauir was 2 for 5 with a run scored and an RBI.
Tennessee Smokies
The Smokies were completely shut down by the Carolina Mudcats, 7-0.
Starter Grant Johnson got the loss by allowing four runs on five hits and three walks in five innings. Johnson struck out three.
The Smokies managed only two hits in this game.
Daytona Cubs
Finally some good news as the D-Cubs trounced the Vero Beach Devil Rays, 13-5.
More good news is the rehab start in this game made by Angel Guzman. Guzman threw two innings and allowed three runs, but only one of them was earned. Guzman gave up three hits. He didn't walk a batter and struck out two.
Adam Harben (he of the "Why in the world is he on the 40-man?" fame) got his third win of the season with 1.2 innings of relief. Harben allowed no runs, one hit and one walk. He struck out one Devil Ray as well.
Mike Cooper got his fourth save. He allowed one run on four hits in 2.1 innings of relief. Cooper neither walked nor struck out a batter.
First baseman Russ Canzler just had one of those nights you don't forget. Canzler was 4 for 5 with two three-run home runs and seven RBI total. Canzler also had a double and scored three times. Eleven total bases on the night for Canzler. He now has nine home runs on the season.
Left fielder Ty Wright was 2 for 5 with a two-run home run of his own. Wright had three RBI total. The home run was his fifth of the year. Wright also stole a base.
Third baseman Jonathan Mota was 3 for 5 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.
Peoria Chiefs
The Chiefs grounded the South Bend Silver Hawks, 6-1.
With the exception of one solo home run, Casey Coleman was quite impressive in his second MWL start. Coleman allow only the one run on two hits in five innings. He didn't walk a batter and struck out six for his first win in the MWL.
Jake Muyco tossed two innings of scoreless relief.
Left fielder Brandon Guyer's power surge continues as he hit his tenth home run of the year tonight, a two-run bomb in the fifth inning. Overall, Guyer was 1 for 3.
Second baseman Josh Harrison was 2 for 4 with two stolen bases and a run scored. First baseman Luis Bautista was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Boise Hawks
The Hawks were defeated by the Tri-City Dust Devils, 7-4 in 11 innings. I must have worn my lucky Hawks cap for nothing.
James Leverton started and allowed two runs on three hits over four innings. Leverton walked two and struck out three.
Marcus Hatley allowed two runs on two solo home runs in 3.1 innings of relief. Bubba O'Donnell had two shutout innings.
It was a rough night for Mark Pawelek. Pawelek took the loss when he was tagged for three runs on two hits and two walks in the inning he pitched. Pawelek struck out one.
Whatever reason Josh Vitters was pulled from the game early yesterday, it apparently wasn't an injury. Vitters hit his third home run of the season tonight in a 2 for 6 effort. Vitters scored twice and had that one RBI.
Shortstop Marwin Gonzalez was 3 for 5 with a stolen base. DH Sean Hoorelbeke was 2 for 6 with a double and an RBI. Second baseman David Macias was 2 for 5 with a walk a rub scored and an RBI.

It's good to see Vitters
wasn’t hurt and even nicer seeing him hit his 3rd homerun
Clever signature line

Good to see Vitters
hit a homerun. I wonder when he’ll get called up to Peoria?
Alittle off-topic but am I the only one that gets sick when we see former farmhand Ricky Nolasco dominates for the Marlins? I was a huge fan of him when he was in our system.
Boy, I don’t ever want to be reminded of that trade again. I hope we start to stockpile on the talent we have like we did in years past .. but please Hendry don’t trade a Pinto and Nolasco for a player like Juan Pierre EVER again.
And LOL @ the forum for dads and moms.
My new life, my new world, and my beautiful daughter:
Tamia London Davis: Due date (8-11-08)!
If it makes you feel any better
We got the draft choice for Pierre than ended up as Josh Donaldson, who was a key member of the trade that brought us Harden and Gaudin.
So for Nolasco, Pinto, Mitre, Patterson, Gallagher and Murton (and Murton we got, along with Nomar, essentially for Brendan Harris), we got Harden and Gaudin.
Maybe it was a dumb trade anyway, but it’s not nearly as bad when you think of it that way.
Borowy . . .Sutcliffe . . .Harden?
It makes me feel alittle better.
But we still could of got Harden even without Donaldson :-)
I’m going to be sick until Nolasco starts falling back down to earth—I’m stubborn.
But you know what does make me feel good? Harden is only a year older than Nolasco. He could be a Cub for a very, very long time. That is if he continues to stay healthy.

don't forget Pinto and Mitre
Mitre’s hurt right now but he’s basically 90% of Jason Marquis at 1/20th the price
and Pinto would be nice to have instead of Scott “Bullpen Jester” Eyre
but Josh does make a good point on Donaldson, even though i agree we could’ve probably gotten the Harden deal done without him

Oh, on Vitters
with “The Road to Wrigley” over, I don’t think they’re in a rush to move him to Peoria. But I bet he gets a week or two there at the end of the season, especially if the Chiefs look like they’ll make the playoffs. Boise probably won’t make the playoffs despite the second best record in the NWL because they play in the same division as the Spokane Indians.
Borowy . . .Sutcliffe . . .Harden?
Great job
Just wanted to say you do a great job Josh!
I read this post every day…love the minor league info. Can’t wait to see some of these guys in Cubbie Blue!
