Who comes up in Sept?

I think for sure:
Pie- pinch running, late inning defensive replacement, probably see him get a start or two against a righty
Hart- a few relief apperances
Hoffpauir- pinch hitting, maybe give DLee a rest a game
A 9th inning defense of Johnson Pie and Fukudome is about as good as it gets
I also think we might see:
Ascanio- a relief appearnce or two if we get into some extra innings games
Fuld- pr and could be a defensive replacement in right, although Fukudome doesnt need one
Fox- righty pinch hitter
Question- Does a Sept. call up have to be on the 40 man?

Can call up anyone on the 40-man roster
Teams generally don’t call up too many, though, because playing time is an issue and they don’t want to make the clubhouse a circus.

He was demoted this year and hasn’t exactly been playing lights out.

Gotta disagree here...
...and with the poster below who described Fuld as being of “very little use”. While I doubt that Fuld has any future in this organization, I think we’ll catch of few glimpses of him in September. He’s perhaps the best defensive outfielder in the entire organization – he’s really a CF, even though he had a couple big moments as a defensive replacement in RF last year. Also, he’s fairly quick and is a better pinch-running option than a) everybody on their bench now, except maybe Cedeno and b) most of the other people that they can activate in September. With the positive impression that he made on the manager late last year, I can see Lou using him as spare part again. Of course, if he gets an at-bat in a meaningful situation, I’ll scream…and I can’t see him ever hitting enough to get onto the regular 25-man roster, even as a bench player. But with the rosters expanding, a guy who can play the outfield well and run a little bit is quite handy to have around. I think we’ll see him a time or two in the outfield and pinch-running but hopefully no more than that.

Gotta disagree with you on this one...
While I agree with the statement that a guy who can play the outfield well and run a little bit is useful, I think you’ve tagged the wrong player as the guy to fill that role.
I don’t think Fuld is the best defensive outfielder in the organization. I think Pie earns that title. Also, while Fuld is certainly a decent runner, he is not as fast as Pie. So Pie is the better pinch running option as well, in my opinion.
There will certainly be a callup for a pinch-runner/defensive OF substitute. I just think it will be Pie and not Fuld.

Pie
I think that they’ll both get called up. I agree that Pie is faster than Fuld…but does that necessarily make him a better baserunner? Maybe, maybe not. You could be right that Pie would become the first option as a pinch-runner but having Fuld as another option would allow Lou to spare wasting a real bench player or Pie in case of a long game or an injury.
As for defense, Pie certainly had the potential to become a very good CF but he still had some ways to go, at least last season. I can’t say that I paid too close attention when he was up earlier this year and, of course, I have no idea how his defense has been in Iowa. If he has improved, especially on the routes he takes, then he would remove some of the impetus to bring up Fuld in September. My impression of Fuld, between seeing him a bit and reading up on him, is that he is or is at least is considered to be a major-league caliber CF.
Yes, Pie will definitely be up in September and he has more value than Fuld because he’s a much, much better hitter. I guess if you prioritized which players can help after the roster expansion, Fuld would be among the top 4 or 5 candidates, especially because so many others (DuBois, Hoffpauir, Fox) are just bats with little to no defensive value. And remember, Fuld has a huge point in his favor, with Lou and Hendry, in that he was very prominent in helping the team as a callup last year. Moreover, with the two perenially gimpy outfielders in the lineup now (Soriano and Edmonds), calling up two outfielders in September doesn’ t seem unreasonable. I guess Fuld’s fate really hinges on how many position players they decide to add.

I'll be surprised if Fuld is called up...
I think he’s shown to be a gold-glove quality defender, even in his brief time in MLB. I think he’s a MUCH better defender than Fuld. That isn’t to say that Fuld is a bad defender – just that Pie is an elite defensive player. As for baserunning, I think Pie has shown himself to be quite a good one. And I don’t think Fuld has shown such a baserunning acumen to offset the speed difference. Again – I think Pie is the better choice.
Remember as well that the Cubs have a couple of guys who can be spot subs already in DeRosa and Johnson. I’m not sure I see the need for two more options there. And since we agree that Pie is ahead of Fuld in the pecking order, it doesn’t bode well for Fuld.
I think Fuld’s best chances of a call-up will be a significant injury to one of the CF ahead of him. That’s certainly possible with Johnson’s style of play, Edmonds’ history of nagging injuries, and Pie’s current hand injury. But I don’t think it’s likely.

Another way of looking at it...
...would be for me to concede that Pie is as good if not better than Fuld in every aspect of the game. Now here’s my argument for Fuld:
As a sixth outfielder/pinch runner, behind Pie at both positions, he’d still be of use in at least two scenarios.
1. Teams rarely use a pinch runner twice in a game because the 25-man roster makes impractical. For example, the Cubs have used pitchers as pinch runners several times this year but in September, you can use Fuld in that situation and not risk injuring a pitcher or using your top defensive replacement in Pie. On the flip side, in a long extra inning game you’ve got an extra pinch runner in case Pie and/or Cedeno have already entered the game.
2. If the Cubs are winning or losing by a huge margin, I’d rather just replace Edmonds and Soriano and there’s not much point to running Johnson out to play the field for an inning or two. Granted the risk of an injury in such a scenario is very unlikely, but it’s still possible so why not let Fuld play an inning or two?
If it was a choice between the two, either Pie or Fuld, then Pie is the obvious choice but the Cubs don’t have to make that decision – they can bring up both players. Simply having the additional spare part, in Fuld, is a positive even if the potential impact is small.
Oh and don’t worry about the editing, I quit my job with the Grammar Police years ago.

Pie's been considered for a long time
as the best OF defender in the Cubs organization. I never saw any scouting report that doubted his defense… In fact, I haven’t seen any recent report that didn’t praise his fielding unless they just didn’t mention fielding… ....In fact, you’re the first person I ever heard that said Pie is something other than very good at CF…
Also I don’t think that 14 games, 9 PA and 3 BB is “very prominent in helping the team”. I don’t think the Cubs need a 6th outfielder because our outfield is pretty set. Pie is called up only cause he’s a top prospect. He probably still wont even get a chance still with Lou.

Just to be clear...
...I didn’t bemoan Pie’s defense – he’s an above average CF already and it’s easy to envision him improving into an elite, gold glove caliber CF. And in one of the posts above, I mentioned that I haven’t paid too much attention his defense this season so he very well may have gotten better. Pie’s routes to the ball were somewhat inconsistent last season, at least when I watched him.
In describing Fuld’s contribution last year, I used “very prominent” because he got a lot of attention for two stellar defensive plays as a right fielder, a terrific catch in St. Louis and then that catch along the line against Pittsburgh that he turned into a double play. His total contribution (as you note, 9 PAs) was so slight that it didn’t any real impact but he did get a lot of attention. It was clear then, and in especially in spring training, that Lou had really taken a liking to the guy.
I think Pie will ultimately have a long major league career and it’s important to get him big league at bats right now, if at all possible. Fuld has proven that he can’t hit pitching in the minors, let alone the big leagues and, as such, should never ever appear on a 25-man roster. However, between his legs and his defense, he can add a little bit as a 6th outfielder in September and he’s already on the 40-man roster so there’s no need for an additional move. Calling him up is just a small luxury that likely wouldn’t have any consequence, a “better safe than sorry” move.

two more quick thoughts...
1) This is kind of a tough exercise because almost everybody except those living around Des Moines and West Tennessee hasn’t seen either of these guys play defense much this year.
2) So many people are down on Pie because he hasn’t lived up to the hype, which from the naysayer’s perspective, made him out to The Next Willie Mays. Still, he can have a long career if he stops pressing so hard at the plate in the big leagues. Maybe now we can more accurately see him as having the potential to be The Next Devon White.

Can't call up a catcher AND Dubois...
The Cubs have only two catchers on the 40-man roster, and DuBois isn’t on the roster. We currently have 39 spots filled. So for DuBois and a catcher to get a callup, someone would have to be removed from the 40-man roster.

Not happening now since he injured himself again
while warming up prior to the seventh inning of a game the Alexandria Aces dropped 5-3 to the Amarillo Dillas last Friday night.
On his final throw of the warm-up Guzman leapt from the mound in obvious pain and was removed from the game with an apparent arm injury, the severity of which was unknown after game time.

As for hopes of joining the active roster, that was wishful thinking on Guzman’s behalf.
Pitcher Angel Guzman - the Cubs’ fifth starter early last season - visited teammates in the clubhouse and said his rehab from last year’s Tommy John surgery is going well enough that he plans to start a minor-league rehab assignment within two weeks with an eye toward returning to the active roster by mid-August.

The scary thing for me is the makeup of the 40 man roster...
No other catchers except Jake Fox, who isn’t really a catcher.
No other middle infielders.
Two guys (Fuld, Fox) that are of very little use.
Most playoff-bound managers like to call up an extra MI and a third catcher to protect them in case of a September injury. (That happened to the Braves in 2004 when DeRo tore his ACL the last week of the season; Cox had called up Betemit Sept. 1st and added him to the playoff roster. If he had been sent home after the AAA season, he would have been out of shape by the fourth week in Sept.)
I would like to see Koyie Hill called up as a third catcher, but I’m not sure if the Cubs even have a MI worth calling up as insurance—a problem I hope Jim Hendry tries to correct in August.
