Skip Caray Dies at Age 68
Skip Caray passed away in his sleep last night at the age of 68. Caray was in his 33rd season as a commentator for the Braves.
"Our baseball community has lost a legend today," Braves president John Schuerholz said. "The Braves family and Braves fans everywhere will sadly miss him. Our thoughts are with his wife Paula and his children."
The article mentions that Skip and Harry worked together on Missouri football games. I never knew that. Thoughts and prayers go out to the Caray family.

Loved Skip
My dad is a huge Braves fan, and I watched a lot of games on TBS growing up. He was really funny, especially when the team was horrible and he had to be more entertaining to keep people interested.
Surprised and sad that he’s gone.

Rest in peace, Skip.
I grew up watching the Braves with my grandmother, so his voice was a permanent fixture in my childhood. He will be missed by many!

RIP Skip
After we moved to Alabama in the 70’s all I could watch was Braves games until WGN got on cable. Skip and Pete Van W. are the braves to me along with Ernie Johnson Sr. Skip seemed to be going down hill the last year or so. He may have had a stroke, I know his speech sounded slurred. With TBS not carrying the Braves anymore it was not the same anyway. Condolences to his family…
Interesting...
His first job after earning a journalism degree from the University of Missouri was calling the games of the Tulsa Oilers minor-league baseball team. The station didn’t send him to road games, so Caray would recreate the action on the air from pitch-by-pitch details provided by a Western Union ticker tape. To simulate the sound of bat meeting ball, he’d tap a piece of balsa wood with a pencil
College games used to have pitch-by-pitch details sent over ticker tape?? Sort of a primitive version of Gameday.
Whoops...
meant minor-league games, not college games
Many early road games were re-creations....
....back when broadcasting baseball first began. Majors, minors, didn’t matter. Ronald Reagan got his start re-creating Cub games for an Iowa radio station.

Skip Carey was a pioneer of sorts. Unfortunately, he also was a real asshole, an abusive husband and an absentee father to Chip and his siblings.
Dang, MDB - what did you have for dinner?

From an MLB.com article
Chip Caray on his father’s passing
“I’m just in shock,” Chip said. “I know he wasn’t feeling good, but this was unexpected. He hung the moon for me. I got to talk to him [on Saturday], and the last thing I got to say to him was, ‘I love you.’”
Say what you just said about Skip to Chip’s face, especially at this moment, and he’ll spit your so-called sympathy back in your face and grant you your wish for a fight. What kind of despicable person tramples on the grave of someone’s father and husband?
Seriously MDBNIU, what is wrong with you?
First of all, it’s Skip Caray…at least spell his name correctly. And to be so disrespectful, are you just a miserable person? Do you ever have anything nice to say?
Don't you have ANY respect?
Hey, it's a new century!

Agreed with all of the above.
A little respect for someone recently deceased is simple human decency.

that was a disgusting post!
from the mouth of Uecker:
"Am I the only one who’s glad it’s only a 4-game series? If was a 9-game series, I think the Cubs would win them all."
Skip Carey
Skip Carey had a violent marriage with his first wife in St. Louis and was an absentee father for a large share of his children’s life. The guy was also considered a legendary asshole in Atlanta. So no, I’m not going to gush false respect for the man. The same way I won’t gush false respect for Bobby Hull when he leaves this earth.
Be careful who you blindly worship
There is a difference between gushing false respect...
and just not saying anything for a few days. I’m sure you know the old saying, “if you don’t have anything nice to say…”
I don’t have an opinion on Carey one way or the other (I’ve never met him, nor his family, nor anyone who knew him, so I’m in no place to judge him), but your post was extremely offensive and inappropriate regardless of whom you were discussing.
Perhaps if you spent more time in worship
you would develop sorely needed grace
try this for a start: If you have nothing good to say then say nothing at all.
No worship, just a little respect....

AL, I do not agree with MDBNIU comments
but I do believe that what he has to say is important.
I remember when Yang Shangkun (the Leader of the Chinese Military that order the Tiananmen Square Massacre) died the media only talked about the good things he had done, washing over the bad parts/the totality of his life.
I’m not saying Skip Caray’s faults were as bad as Yang Shangkun, far from it, but Skip was like all of us, human.
Do I think MDBNIU comments were a insensitive, yes. Do I think his comments are ban worthy, absolutely not.
This is your blog and I think you do a great job. I enjoy reading you posts and I thank you for all of you hard work. But what makes this blog great is the myriad of ideas and thoughts expressed here. There are times when things are said that are straight up offensive in just the interest of being offensive and those people making those comments should be removed. Other say offensive things but do them as a part of a larger comment. While most of us disagree with these comments, they do make us think. It is important that all of us protect those peoples ability to express those opinions. Not because we agree with them but rather to insure our ability to speak openly and honestly is protected even when our opinion my not be as popular.
Al, as your signature line says “That’s my opinion and if you don’t like it, well, I have others.” I look at those words as wonder metaphor for what makes this blog so great.

I don't think these are remotely similar situations...
MDBNIU was using this opportunity to disparage a guy who had just passed away based entirely upon hearsay. He was effectively smearing Carey, whereas the Chinese example was intentionally hiding facts.
Al isn’t censoring free speech and covering up important facts. He’s censoring speech that is basically universally considered offensive and unnecessary. And since this is a private board run by Al, and as such Al has the right to say what is acceptable or not.
If MDBNIU wants to disparage others in posts, he is more than welcome to create his own website to do so.
You are 100% right...
but all I was trying to point out was the fact that banning MDBNIU comes with consequences.

A reminder, only the government can censor and/or give free speech rights. This blog is a private entity, owned by me (and SBN). Thus, we can do as we choose here. Everyone who posts here is a guest. There are simple rules to follow. If you can’t follow them, you will be asked or told to leave.

Like I said, I agree with your statement 100%
Even though you’re a private blog and you have 100% control over content, you also have a responsibilities to manage inappropriate content AND protect the rights of all people to express their opinions.
It has nothing to do with protecting what they are saying rather it is in your simple self interest for all folks to feel as if their opinions are welcome because when the happens people will keep clicking on to your blog.
It is not my call on how to balance the protection of readers from inappropriate content vs. the appearance of allowing people the freedom to express their opinions. That is your right and responsibility.
I just believe if you banned MDBNIU it could upset that vital balance.
These are the “consequences” that I’m talking about.

Not that it’s a bad thing, just frustrating for those of us who come here for intelligent baseball talk and instead are given a heaping helping of Blue Mike’s nonsense and trips into the completely fictional and illogical.
Frustrating, yes.
Completely fictional, ummmm no. He’s a blow hard with a Capital “B” and “H.” Like 99.9% of the folks on this post he’s 50% right and 50% wrong (only exception is Sue, she’s prefect:). I've been reading the site since spring training
I just started commenting a few weeks ago. I’ve heard of what “Blue Mike” had done and agree that “Blue Mike” should have been banned. But the only thing I have see is the MDBNIU incarnation and 90% of the time his comments get labeled “inappropriate” because of previous actions rather than the comments themselves.

Since spring training isn't that long...
Sorry, but the history goes WAY back. And fair or not, when you do enough to get banned four times, that is going to follow you. As such, borderline offenses (and trust me, MDBNIU has gone WELL beyond borderline on many instances since spring training, so I’m not sure I buy your argument on that ground either) are penalized more harshly than borderline offenses by someone with a clean record.
Even if it wasn’t the case that MDBNIU has crossed the line plenty in the past several months, MDBNIU waived his right to the benefit of the doubt by being banned four times, in my opinion. That’s the way it works in all walks of life.
Clearly, you aren’t going to be convinced, so I’m going to stop trying. For some reason, you’ve sided with MDBNIU on this. That’s fine. Just understand that there is a reason you are in the vast minority on this issue. This isn’t some conspiracy against one innocent poster.
Life is what you make of it and
“Judge not, lest ye be judged.”
Clearly our opinions of MDBNIU are very different. I can understand your previous frustrations with MDBNIU but from the perspective of someone who has doesn’t have all the baggage of previous transgressions make take is some here have been unfair towards him.
Discount my opinion if you like but I would hope it might make your think about your own judgments about this issue before you completely thrown my opinions away.

Sad news
He was my favorite current announcer. I think the last time I heard him call a game was last year when the Cubs played in Atlanta. They only let him do a few TBS games last season, but it was a joy to hear him again. Rich Hill threw a great game, his curve was really something that night. I grew up listening to Skip on Braves games on TBS, along with the previously mentioned Pete Van Wieren and Ernie Johnson. I couldn’t believe TBS didn’t let him do any playoff games last season, especially considering some of the announcers they had.
"In an ocean or in a glass, cool water is such a gas."
One of the best.......
.... Skip was his own man like his father, in his own way. He certainly wasn’t treated right by the Braves his last few years. At least Chip got to work with him at the end.
Santo Forever!
Joining his father in that broadcast booth in the sky
Truly sad to hear of his passing. But I’m also glad that his health problems are at an end.
I have to believe that it tore him up inside to be limited to just home Braves games.
I recall reading just a few months ago that Skip had said this year has been hard
for him, dealing with his diabetes, and irregular heartbeat and congestive heart failure
not to mention reduced kidney and liver functions
All my thoughts are with the Chip and the Caray family.
Not sure if Skip himself was involved...
but my fav Braves announcer story, was from a few years ago. The announcers on-air busted the Turner Field grounds crew giving the Braves an against-the-rules advantage by shortening the width of the batter’s boxes (or maybe it was the catcher’s box).
I think it had something to do with whoever their opponents were just for a particular series, cause they put a side-by-side comparison on the screen from the previous series. Anyway, the team was pissed at em, and right before the next road trip, denied all the broadcasters seats on the team plane. The announcers ended up having to make last-minute plans to get to the next road game city.
For some reason, I always think of that story whenever I would hear Skip, Pete Van Wieren, or Don Sutton on the radio doing Braves games.
Diminished Role At End
I wish TBS had put Skip Caray on some of the postseason telecasts last season. It was sad to see less of Skip on Braves TV games the last couple of years. I was able to hear him on radio broadcasts because of a local Braves affiliate in Memphis. I thought he was a Hall of Fame announcer. Maybe, he’ll make it posthumously. I’m glad Harry got inducted while he was alive. This is a very sad day for those of us who grew up with MLB on cable TV in the 1980’s.
"The big possum walks late." - Harry Caray
I remember
Skip when the only thing the Braves had going for them was Dale Murphy, and you could tell the colors of nearly every seat in Fulton County Stadium. Skip’s biting wit kept me coming back for more, though the Braves were just terrible at the time.
RIP, Skip. You did a good job broadcasting games, and I am thankful for that.

Well, Blue Mike Succeeded...
... he knew damn well by posting what he did it would inflame the masses and get us all to talk about Blue Mike once again, and he was right. He disparaged Caray right after his death solely to be unduly provocative, and it worked. Skip Caray’s death on BCB has become all about Blue Mike. It wasn’t that he wanted to post an edgy opinion or take an unpopular stand. He trashed a dead man, and likel y feels very proud of himself for doing so. What an absolutely pathetic way to get attention. Truly no class at all.
Santo Forever!
In all fairness
This conversation started because of my defense of Blue Mike. I do feel bad though that this posts conversation have split off in this direction.

I'm not so sure......
......when I read his post I was shocked. I’ve made my share of posts I’d like to take back here, so I’m not perfect, but his post re: Skip Caray was beyond the pale. It would have generated this reaction regardless. I haven’t always agreed with the abuse he has taken over time, but this one is indefensible. The sad thing is, he probably doesn’t care.
Santo Forever!
My favorite Skip stories
usually revolve around the bad Braves’ teams of the ‘70s and ‘80s, not the powerhouse ones of the ‘90s. He and Van Wieren really had to use humor to get through it.
Saying stuff like “The bases are loaded again, and I wish I was, too.”
That’s the difference between a broadcaster who gives you the basic stuff and one who actually is entertaining. BTW, I would put Len and Bob in the latter category, Hawk and DJ in the former. Those guys simply aren’t entertaining.

Brew Crew, the same Man who said "Judge not .."
also said to “judge not according to the appearance, but judge RIGHTEOUS judgement ..” As one who has taught regularly from that standard, let me bounce something off of you ..
He did not forbid making judgment calls on people or situations .. what he demanded was an absolute commitment to sound, sober, fair judgment calls on anyone and any thing. He COMMANDED this .. it wasn’t an option. Those seeking to avoid discernment of a foible by pulling this kind of card miss the whole point of what he was teaching .
For one person to judge another’s actions isn’t some inexcusably intolerant issue, IMHO. he implicitly mandates this as a normal course of daily decision making and rational consideration but only in a completely qualified manner. He teaches that an inappropriate judgment is when a snap judgment is based solely upon a perspective or truth claim that hasn’t been fully examined.
“Judging righteously” isn’t an arrival at some sanctimonious snap-judgment .. it’s when real thought and real consideration is used.
I’m not trying to make this a theology lesson .. I’m simply pointing out that if we never judged anything because it was politically incorrect to too many people, we’d never arrive at anything remotely resembling civil order or personal / societal balance. Chaos would ensue when objective standards are tossed out the door to avoid seeming too “judgmental.”
So, frankly, on the basis of this principle, I think it’s entirely approprate that someone like MDBNIU should most definitely be judged by the standards of the community that he has chosen to be among. I agree with others here that, despite the sad reality that Mr. Caray had some serious family and personal problems, he deserves a little more respect then you’re willing to give him. How much of that dysfunction and personal failure that he may well have been guilty of could be something that, over the last several years of his life, he may have very sincerely, quietly and earnestly did all he could to change and reform from? HOW do you know he is still an “a__hole?”
I believe that all people who live under such shadows should be cut some slack and be given a chance to seek some redemption for their failings. It’s when they take a course of action that clearly shows they don’t give a rip about their dysfunction or what it does to others that we can conclude X or Y about who they are.
I’m not defending Caray’s past, but I like to think that perhaps he’s done all he can to change his ways, leading his son to make the comment he did. I certainly agree with everyone that at someone’s death, a generous bit of leeway with their personal pasts should be given and that they be granted a dignified memory of their life. Unlike what you’re defending here ..
Well, Next Year is here .. and Jack's century's gotta end some time .. GO CUBBIES!
So did he just die of natural causes? or is an autopsy going to be done?
either way he was a great broadcaster. Growing up in the south, I grew up listening to him broadcast Bravos games. He’ll definately be missed. This is just a complete shock to the baseball world…

Skip Caray suffered fom Diabates
which led to other breakdowns, and from this, his heart, liver and kidneys were failing.
Excuse if this has been posted. Reading the garbage that this thread has spewed is a bit much, so I’ve passed over many of the entries.

(diabetes is not mentioned in this article, but I believe I’ve seen that reference in another story at a site I do not remember.)
