Gallagher expected to go on DL: felt a "pop in his shoulder"
So it is likely that Gallagher will go on the disabled list to make room for Gio Gonzalez on the roster. I don't know the extent of Gallagher's injury, but one source told me yesterday that he had heard that Gallagher had felt a "pop" in the shoulder in his July 25 start against Texas. I haven't been able to confirm that with Gallagher, who I didn't see at all yesterday, but it might explain some of Gallagher's wildness in his start Monday night.

Hmmm...so did the Cubs dodge a bullet here? I would assume this is just a coincidence, but pretty scary nonetheless. That is why NO player, Rich Hill circa 2007, or Gallagher version 2008, is "untouchable." With a talent like Harden, you simply roll the dice and throw caution to the wind with an injury history on a player. Look what can happen...if you would have given out odds after that deal, that Sean would go to the DL before Harden they would have been ridiculously favoring Harden going to the shelf. Another reason (as if we needed another) that Hendry made a great move. Just feel sorry for Sean.
What I particulary find revealing is the A's fans comments after the article. They are so bitter, and frankly...I don't blame them one bit.

Wow, that's chilling.
I hope Gallagher is OK. Let the conspiracy theories begin.

For the sake of the Cubs I hope they don't find Gallagher had long-term structural damage...
....otherwise Oakland is going to claim he was damaged goods and the Cubs may be forced to insert somebody else in the trade.

Um.... seriously. You're seriously wondering this?
The complete medical records of every player are made available during trade inquiries.
And successful GMs don’t trash their relationships by trading damaged goods without disclosing that information.
I'm not going to even bother trying to update this sig everyday anymore... that's what the standings column on ESPN is for.

Agreed...
Unless Hendry was obstructing the availability of medical information for which he had prior knowledge, there’s no way…
JH seems to pride himself on the reputation that he maintains with other GMs, and has a history with Beane in particular. As such I can’t imagine him trying to pull a fast-one. Furthermore if Gallagher has a pre-existing shoulder condition (or signs of problems) he wouldn’t have been slotted into the rotation as he was.

Good grief
There are plenty of instances where structural damage is not known about until something happens and a pitcher undergoes MRI or arthrogram. Things that don’t show up in a physical.
I don’t think for a minute that Jim Hendry knowingly traded damaged goods. But it “could” prove the case that Gallagher has a structural problem with his arm, which could therefore lead to the Rich Harden trade being re-opened.

There are instances of unknown structural damages...
and in how many of those cases did the team have to go back and trade someone else? Your scenario requires so many assumptions that it is not really a realistic concern, in my opinion.

Has this ever happend?
Not making an accusation, I’ve just never heard of it…. by all means if there is an instance, i’d love to know (just don’t have the time to research it at work).
I can imagine a team filing a grievance if they though a team traded a player who was knowingly injured, but can’t recall a trade being “reopened” because because of an injury that happened - or surfaced, if related to a pre-existing condition - after the trade was done.

Yes...This has happened...
The Nats and Reds made a trade before the trade deadline in 2006 that was considered questionable. They traded Gary Majewski and Bill Bray to the Reds in exchange for Filipe Lopez and Austin Kearns among others.
The trade caused some controversy, as the Reds front office was apparently unaware of cortisone shots that had been given to Majewski because of arm pain before the trade. But in this case the Reds withheld information about cortisone shots, which is technically not illegal, but it pissed off the Reds.

A grievance was actually filed...
...by Toronto after they acquired Mike Sirotka from the White Sox. Sirotka was already hurt at the time of the trade, so badly that he never pitched in the majors again. Toronto wanted MLB to rescind the trade but that request was denied.

In both of those cases
the requests were denied and neither player played for the other team for a month.

No, it couldn't
There is absolutely no chance in anywhere hot that the Harden trade could be “re-opened.” Gallagher has already pitched five games for Oakland. The deal is final.
You’re only making people question your sanity. Has there ever in baseball history been a trade that was “reopened” after the players played for the other team for a month? Never.
No chance. Your Cassandra act is getting silly.

Jeez if there possible damaged goods
it was Harden. Gallagher was hitting 94-95 on his heat, no discomfort at least there was none reported. And the wiz Billy Beane I am sure did his homework dillegently.
I don’t see the Cubs being held responsible for Gallaghers possible shoudler issues.

I wouldn't worry about that...
He took a physical when he got to the A’s, as all players do. They approved the trade. He has pitched for them three of four times. It is their problem now.
Regardless, I hope it isn’t bad for Gallagher. I liked that kid a lot, as do many of you.

Yup, no chance of that...
the doctors approved the trade. He was hurt after the trade, not before.
If I’m the Cubs, the only thing I’m concerned about regarding the trade is keeping the fingers crossed that Harden stays healthy.
That said, I hope for Gallagher’s sake it is a minor thing and that he’s back pitching healthy soon.

Hopefully it is nothing serious. I’ve been keeping an eye on Gallagher with the A’s and wishing him success (and health) with the opportunity that he has there.

This is horrible news
I liked Sean, and I want to see the best for him. Granted, baseball is a business, and it looks like we came out on the positive end of the deal so far, but I still want ex-Cubs to do well. Hope he is alright.

That's a real shame.
Gallagher has real talent, and it’d be terrible if he missed what might be a year or more with shoulder trouble. The A’s fans do have a right to be upset—at losing a talented player. There weren’t any shenanigans here. It happens.
