OT: Brett Favre traded to Jets

FOXSports.com's Jay Glazer reports that the Packers have traded Brett Favre to the Jets. In compensation, the Packers are believed to get a draft pick which is conditional on his and the Jets' performance. This pick can range from a 3rd round pick to a 1st round pick.

What impact do you think Favre will have on that team with their new revamped defense? Remember the Jets play NE twice each year...

How do Bears fans feel about having Brett out of the division?

Any Packer fans out there? Packers could possibly get a first round pick depending on Favre's performance. Nice return for a guy the Pack was planning to be without?

Oh there's still plenty...

1. Brett gets on a plane to NY
2. Brett shows up for practice
3. Brett really likes new teammates
4. Brett has first preseason game

Etc, etc, etc.

Hey, supporting commentary!

Kind of.

Just looking for consistency. Which is what Favre’s interceptions are likely to be in the cold weather—if he plays long enough for it to get cold.

What?

What the hell are you trying to say, are you trying to be witty?

Favre has the most career INT in the history of the NFL with 288, and has 18 INT in his last 9 playoff games. Plus he’s old as hell, he’s going to do shit with the Jets.

I don’t know what your statement is suppose to signify, but I do know that if you wanted Favre on the Bears, well… I don’t know, but I know I don’t like you

Yeah, I know -- you like NittanyCub

Because he’s hip, trendy and popular. In your own mind.

I don’t know what the hell your problem is, but you seem to go out of your way to snipe at a handful of people here.

I don’t really care who Farvre plays for. And my comment was supposed to signify that you made a comment without supporting it, yet you’re the first to bitch about “+1”, among other things.

For someone who bitches as much as you do about what other people post, it’s quite ironic that most of your posts are snarky.

And if you didn’t get that, what I’m saying is:
You’re rude, and you’re not “all that”.

by Shanghai Badger on Aug 7, 2008 5:04 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's exactly what I try to convey

Trendy, and being popular. And being “all that.”

Look man, you need to deal with your own inner-problems before you smear it all over the internet. Show me a comment where I say that I was “all that,” and “hip,” and I’ll give you 20,000 dollars.

I don’t like to “bitch” at people, but I will criticize a comment that I don’t like. If that’s going out of my way, instead of giving a deep, innocuous sigh of relief inside my head, then I guess I’m going out of my way.

And honestly, just because I’m younger than you, doesn’t mean I’m trying to be rude. If you can’t handle criticism by your age, much-less criticism of a Favre trade over the internet, then I wonder how you’re able to function in day-to-day activities.

As a Bears fan...

I wish Aaron Rodgers would switch his number to 4 for one of their practices and run out with his helmet on. Watch the crowd go nuts, then rip it off Hulk Hogan style. Just to shut the crowd up from chanting “We want Brett. We want Brett.”

I’m almost tempted to root for him to demolish the NFC this year while Brett crashes in NY. Just to tarnish Favre’s legacy that much more.

As for what ESPN will talk about? How did this situation get this far? Joba’s shoulder. How will Brett do in NYC? Big Papi’s wrist. What does Joba think about Brett? An interior decorator to give decorating tips to Brett for his new place. Coverage of the “Trade for Brett” rally outside Lambeau attended by 38 people. Chris Mortenson’s exclusive phone conversation with Brett about how he’s never really lived in a city like NY before. Rachel Nichols camping outside Brett’s private jet before leaving for NY. Wendy Nix arriving at Jets camp to ask Chad Pennington what he thinks.

I could go on for days. Much like ESPN will. Whatever credibility they had as a news network as gone down the pooper over the last 3 or 4 years.

Considering the god-awful way the situation has been handled by everyone involved, this is about the best way it could have ended. Well, for everyone except for Brett. That poor bastard has to go play for the Jets.

I’ve lost a whole lot of respect for the Packers’ front office over this thing. Yes, dealing with Favre can be a headache, especially just after the season ends. But this is a future Hall of Fame quarterback we’re talking about here. I understand the desire to move in a new direction, but the way Ted Thompson did it was childish and unprofessional. The offered “bribe” for Favre to stay retired was especially ridicuous…anyone who had the slightest idea of what Favre was about could have told you that it wouldn’t work. It wasn’t about money—if Brett Favre wanted more money, all he had to do was go on TV and say “Pay me,” and every Packers fan in the country would have mailed him twenty bucks. He just wanted to play again. Well, now he will…in New York.

Honestly, I hope he and the Jets do well this year. Not just because that will get the Packers a good draft pick in return, but he’ll still be one of my favorite players, even in another uniform. (Except Minnesota…had they traded him there, I would have mothballed my #4 jersey until he actually retired for good, and pretended that the guy in the purple uniform was Brett’s evil twin.)

But of course, what I really hope for is that Aaron Rodgers avoids the injury bug, and the Packers finish the job this year. If that’s not the case…well, hopefully I’ll be too busy celebrating another, more long-awaited championship to notice.

Before each game, please remember to feed the bats.

by Cool Hand on Aug 7, 2008 1:09 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I actually have more respect for the Packers front office

It is rare that the brass of an organization stands up to the exploits of a me-first legend. The “bribe” was also given to John Elway and Dan Marino upon retirement. I think the entire situation looked bad because we seemed to be granted every detail by the reporters. If everything was kept quiet and Favre was just traded, it would have looked a lot better, like most sports scenarios.

by brewfan2 on Aug 7, 2008 9:43 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

not only once did he retire

but 1 month after he announced his retirement he called the packers and said he was wanting to come back. they then flew to miss. to have a press conference to announce he was coming back. only again to be revamped by brett. this is selfish by brett to do people this away. aaron rodgers has waited patiently and shouldnt keep being jerked around. Packers handled this just fine.

"Am I the only one who’s glad it’s only a 4-game series? If was a 9-game series, I think the Cubs would win them all."

by cubsluver22 on Aug 7, 2008 3:35 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well...

They could have not pressured him to retire in the first place (as some reports say is the case.) Accusing the Vikings of tampering, probably not the best move. Again, the ‘sponsorship offer.’ Y’know, basically all those little things that contributed to making this entire thing an enormous mess. Yes, they’re trying to run a business…and an important part of running a business is a little thing called “public relations.” This whole affair has been nothing short of a PR disaster, and Ted Thompson is to blame for some of that.

I realize it’s not entirely fair to make Ted Thompson and the Packers’ front office out to be the bad guys here, and it was my firm belief when this whole thing started that nobody would come out of it looking good. No doubt there’s plenty of reasons for someone to hate on Favre, but after rooting for the guy pretty much his entire career, and watching him lead one of “my teams” to the only championship I’ve gotten to see…I just don’t have it in me to say “screw that guy” and turn my back on him. For all his faults-and they are many, as we Packer fans know better than most of you-he still provided a lot of reasons to celebrate. It can be tough to close a book like that, no matter how badly it ends.

Before each game, please remember to feed the bats.

Sorry...you're wrong about this

As far as the “pressuring,” I don’t think it’s unreasonable for a team to say, “Can you let us know BEFORE the draft and free agency?”.

If Favre truly thought he could come in on July 1 and make his decision, he’s a joke and a scumbag diva.

At some point, it stops

He retired, changed his mind, retired again, changed his mind, and then tried to engineer a trade.

Aikman pointed out that Favre was talking about retiring after the Packers won their Super Bowl, 12 years ago!!!!

At some point, he is not bigger than the whole team.

He took them to the title game? Fine, then he took it away from them with his ludicrous interception.

Favre had a great year last year because he worked hard in the off-season and studied film and actually, you know, did his job. He hasn’t done a thing this off-season except throw to some high school kids.

The Packers will finish with a better record than the Jets. Bank on it. Favre will be ready to retire again by Week 8.

Well cmon...

as a Bears fan Al, we ALWAYS hope they go 2-14. As for Favre….I feel that I can understand the second, third, and fourth thoughts on retirement. He could have handled this better as it appears to be one of those moves that is completely self centered and has little consideration for the franchise that has treated him well for many many years.

I see another Michael jordan and it is seemingly rather pathetic. I like Brett Favre but this may backfire and perhaps he will end up regretting this decision more than he thought.

I'm going to speak blasphemy

As great as Favre’s career has been, it should have been more.

He couldn’t beat the Cowboys.

He got caught up in the pill-popping drama

He was on the wrong end of Super Bowl XXII, which until the Pats beat the Rams, was the biggest upset since Namath-Colts.

The Packers got raped by one of the forgotten horrid calls in NFL history. Jerry Rice was NOT DOWN when he fumbled in 1999!

Two FREAKING DOME teams came into Lambeau in January and beat the Packers. Michael Vick, Duante Culpepper and Eli Manning all came in and stole Favre’s lunch money.

At least three times, the Packers’ Super Bowl hopes ended with him throwing a ridiculous pass to the other team.

Brett Favre has the numbers. He has the MVPs. He has Madden’s nose in his butt. But as far as winning? He’s not even the best Packer QB.

Bart Starr’s teams walked off the field champions 5 times. Brett Favre’s teams, more often than not, walked off the field thinking, “How in the hell do you throw that pass?”

Favre will go down as the most overrated stat compiler/media creation ever. Good riddance to him.

Do you really think Aaron Rodgers gives the Packers a better chance to win?

The guy has had a season ending injury every time he has gotten regular season playing time. Give me another year or two of Favre, trade Rodgers and groom Brohm. Too late for that kind of talk though.

I say good riddance to Mike McCarthy and Ted Thompson who just want to prove they can win without Favre.

Both sides have messed up. Favre is an ego-driven diva and Ted Thompson is a too pround general manager who has the need to prove himself without the percieved security blanket of Favre.

The Packers are two games worse with Rodgers.

And I think the Packers finish with a better record than the Jets.

Favre is

  • Lazy about studying film and plays
  • Going from the smallest sports market in the U.S. to the biggest
  • Out-of-shape
  • Learning a new offense
  • Facing titanic expectations

Jets will be 7-9, finish behind the Pats and the Bills, and fans will be screaming for Kellen Clemens by Week 8.

Everything you say is true

Except that those two games could make a big difference. Again its all a pointless conversation because he is on the Jets.

The trade makes no real sense for the Jets because that team sucks. I love Brad Smith but he isn’t a number three reciever. That team has no talent. Hopefully Brett gets his 50% snaps so we get the 3rd round pick.

It’s not like Aaron Rogers decided that he was going to have a seson ending injury. Farve’s games played streak is admirable, but there’s a lot of dumb luck mixed in with the grit there. It’s not like Favre kept the streak going by refusing to sit out when he had a broken leg.

All I care about is the fact that Favre’s crappy performance in the penultimate regular season game last season helped me win my fantasy league championship and the cash that came with it. With any luck, some other schmoe will take him this year, and he’ll again tank to my benefit.

No matter what you think of Brett Farve, I don’t see any excuse for the Packers front office and how they have handled this. The front office didn’t do what it took to make amends with Farve AND they didn’t go out and get a decent quarterback either. No, the Packers are not a better team with Aaron Rodgers as their quarterback.

What McCarthy said to the media is ridiculous and, in my opinion, something only a moron would say with a straight face.

Make amends with Favre???

They flew down to Mississippi after he told them he wanted to come back. Then he said, “Never mind.” Then he pulled this routine again.

Favre never wanted to come back to the Packers. Never. He wanted to be in Minnesota from the beginning. He didn’t get his way. Boo hoo. Wahhhh. No one loves me!

No matter what you think of Brett Farve

DaBard, That’s not the point. It’s a tremendous diservice to Packer fans to even consider that the team is a better team with Aaron Rodgers as quarterback. It is up to the front office in Green Bay to make the Packers a championship worthy team. That is the job of any front office for any pro franchise. The Packers had better win or Rodgers had better perform; else at least some of thier front office jackasses just signed their own pink slip. DaBard, McCarthy’s public comments about Farve were not the comments that a responsible person would make.

by AboutTheCubs on Aug 7, 2008 12:08 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, it IS the point

Favre did not want to return to the Packers. He wanted to get his release and go play for another team.

So, he wasn’t doing what was best for the team. He was doing what was best for him. The Packers called Favre’s bluff and he went up there and said, “Well, I don’t want to be a distraction…”

If he truly wanted to play for them, he’d say, “Yeah, I’m here. I’m a distraction right now, but give me 10 minutes with the guys and it’ll be fine.”

Get it out of your head that Favre was a viable choice for the Packers. They did the best thing for their team by trading him to New York.

So what if Farve didn't want to play for the Packers

It is up to the front office to field a championship worthy team. Now, their quarterback is Aaron Rodgers (ha, ha, ha). The front office should have gotten a decent quarterback or had a top-notch one waiting to take over for Farve. Take note, they have so far done neither of these things.

Actually

from what I saw last season, Aaron Rodgers looks pretty solid. I am guessing he picked some things up from Favre. But I suppose according to many of the people here, he couldn’t pick up much cause Favre sucks. That’s the Ha ha ha IMO.

Actually...

Favre refused to mentor Rodgers. He’ll also refuse to mentor Kellen Clemens, by the way.

According to Glazer, one of the things the Packers wanted when Favre made noises about coming back in March was for Favre to be a better teacher to Rodgers.

All of a sudden, he wants to be a Viking.

If this guy played in a real media market, he’d have been exposed as the selfish brat he is long ago. Get the popcorn. I’m going to enjoy watching the NYC piranhas destroy him.

I know someone who works at a country club where there are Packer members

Favre refused to mentor Rodgers, is something she has overheard one more than one occosion.

Question why Farve should have mentored Rodgers

At the professional level even rookies have played the game before and probably played in the same role or position before. There should be no need to mentor a professional about how to play the game itself.

Observing techniques and discussing them is likely to work out better informally. Formality presumes the need to teach certain things and the benefit one will receive from learning are known and necessary. The results of formal mentoring should be measurable for the mentoree and the mentor.

Teaching the ropes, on the field and off, is something the coaches and admin people should handle as part of their jobs. Even if the ropes are specific to a position, like quarterback, the coaches should be able to handle that and being taught by a future HOF quarterback is not necessarily learning from a better source.

Brett Farve’s job as a quarterback is not considered an intellectual job, however he does have to know how to read situations, know the plays, and use his athletic abiliy and experience to react. He cannot provide another person with athletic ability. How to read situations should be, for the most part, the coaches job. There is nothing that says the player shouldn’t or can’t do this, but he should not be expected to do this. People who expect or request mentoring from somebody who is not specifically trained and hired to mentor are usually taking a pot-shot approach or making unnecessary requests.

His job is...

Whatever his employers TELL him his job is.

They asked him to mentor Rodgers. He refused.

Now, you make a valid point about whether Favre is too “instinctual” (read: uneducated) to teach what he does. Fair enough.

But his bosses asked him to do it. To say, “It’s not my job” is insubordination.

Not Farve's Job

If you are working for a regular employer without a contract, then you are, for practical purposes, right. You either have to do what they tell you to do or you will be fired or have to quit. Most employers don’t create or re-create what somebody’s job is along the way for superfluous reasons. Farve did not have to be told what his job is though. He was reinstated and he was back with the Packers until they were forced to trade or release him. So, if this had an impact on what transpired, nothing was insubordinate enough for Farve to not get paid.

He was going to be paid...

But he wanted out. Never ever believe he wanted back in Green Bay.

If he truly wanted to be there, he’d be there now.

There is such thing as the power of observation

I also heard about hus hesitance to mento Rodgers and thought that that was BS but, a good QB who is new to the league will watch and will learn. Same way we saw the young Cub pitchers watching and learning from Maddux. Of course Greg was a far more willing mentor but I believe Rodgers picked up some stuff by being on the same bench.

Say what you will about his character, he is a HOF QB, regardless of those passes you say he should not have thrown.

Do you know why we've got a wary eye towards Rodgers?

It’s because of the children, David.

They call him Mister Glass.

Favre 3-10 in playoffs since

Packers won NFC Championship in 1997.

You could argue that bringing Favre back isn’t doing much to become championship-worthy.

It cracks me up to see Bears fans mocking Aaron Rogers

When their QBs are Grossman and Orton. Gotta give Rogers a chance – how was he going to prove he was a great QB when he was holding Favre’s clipboard / getting freak injuries?

The real reason this is such a big deal is because of Aaron Rodgers. Had Brett retired and the team had drafted Brohm and the other guy and Brett wants to come back it’s an easy decision. Why is Aaron Rodgers even on the team? Because 4 years ago Brett was wavering on coming back and the team needed a plan. The Packers have paid him nearly $7mil just to hold a clipboard and he only has a year left on his rookie deal. If Brett comes back, they’ve wasted the money on a pick and never seen him play, they’ve also wasted the pick because they could have gotten him some help instead of a QB who would never see any playing time because he continues to selfishly want the consecutive games started streak to get bigger.

I’m not saying the team is better with Rodgers, but the fact that before last years renaissance Brett has two down years shows to me that last year was more of a fluke than not. He actually started to put in work last season? Shouldn’t he have been doing that the previous years?

I'm doubly cursed...

My favorite teams are the Cubs and Jets. I hate this trade. There goes my favorite player (Pennington) as did mine for the Cubs (Prior)

Can't wait for the Cubs in '08!!!

For all the Favre coverage complaining that is going on

I wonder how Bears fans would feel if, say, Brian Urlacher pulled a stunt like this? I realize that the media coverage has been incredibly overbearing, but Favre is a franchise player and is one of the faces of football, as I would say Urlacher is for the Bears too.
