Offday Game Thread: Cubs vs. Spiders, Thursday 8/7, 1:20 CT
Cleveland Spiders@ Chicago Cubs
Thursday, Aug 7, 2008, 1:20 PM CDT Wrigley Field
Crazy Schmit vs Bob HowrySunny.
Sunny. Winds blowing out to center field at 10-15 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 85.
The sun is out and shining brightly today, and temperatures are perfect for a day baseball game. Let's enjoy this extra game and have some fun!

The Cubs take the field today in their Orphan Throwback Uni's to face the 1899 Cleveland Spiders. Some of the regulars get the day off in preparation for the Cardinal series this weekend. Lou has seen fit to give Howry his first career ML start today, thereby insuring that he'll be unavailable for the next few days. Smart move Lou! He couldn't have picked a better opponent to help Bob build up some confidence, because the Spiders have posted the worst season in professional baseball history. This should be an easy win (knock on Wood), but that's why they play the games right?
The rumor is that a certain internet baseball blogger will sing TMOTTBG today...Go Cubs!
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Howry just gave up a HR to Chester Lee, great great grandfather of Carlos Lee. Long line of Cub killers.

i think Lou
couldn’t have gone righty-lefty any better. though Harry Colliflower will be ready in case Lou goes with the left-handed pinch hitter.
I love to play baseball. I'm a baseball player. I've always been a baseball player. I'm still a baseball player. That's who I am. - Ryne Sandberg
Why risk Soriano?
I’d like to see Edmonds get some extra swings in. Reed should be in left.

Schmit is a lefty. If we can get him out of the game...I think Lou would sit Soriano and bring Jimmy in.

Sure, but why not get Edmonds swings against a lefty?
At some point, he’ll need to face a lefty reliever.

don't worry.
i’m sure if Lou brings Edmonds in, he’ll see a lefty reliever today. provided schmit isn’t on his game.

Funny thing about Williamson's record
This might be more common knowledge than I give it credit for, but Williamson played for Cap Anson’s Chicago team at a ballpark in the present day northwest corner of Millennium Park. It apparently had one of the shortest left field fences in history, comparable to a modern little league field. Because of this, Williamson had a very skewed home/road differential on his home runs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Home_run#Progression_of_the_Major_League_Baseball_single-season_home_run_record).
One of this fun little facts, before Ruth changed how the game was played.
I'm really questioning Joe Quinn's decision
to start Joe Sugden at catcher over Ossee Schreckengost. What is he thinking??? Schreckengost hit .314 for the Spider’s last year.
Quinn is an idiot!

Did you know?
The Spiders have the worst road record in MLB history, with 109 losses. The Spiders were so bad that teams refused to travel to Cleveland to play them, forcing the Spiders to play 36 straight road games to end the season.
Which is why we're playing them at home today.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.
by santoswoodenlegs on Aug 7, 2008 12:28 PM CDT up reply actions
other way around
Cleveland played so many games on the road because they couldn’t draw any fans at home, not because other teams refused to come to Cleveland.
This was a fairly common practice in the 19th century. If you look at the first decade of the NL or some of the other “major” leagues, you’ll see a lot of this, especially from the teams in smaller cities such as Troy, NY.

See, you need to understand that the Spiders got screwed.
Their pythag W/L was 26-128, which is much better than their actual mark of 20-134. If Lave Cross and Joe Quinn were better managers, those 6 games would’ve been in the bag! The only real weak point on the team was that Harry Colliflower, and his 8 ERA.

No shame
in losing to a Tarbox team like the ‘99 Spiders. I’m sure the Cubs tenancy to fail against mediocre pitchers like Zany Schmitgall will serve them well.

What's everybody think...
...about these clowns who are trying to start a new league? The American League? Yeah right, that’ll work. Each that time somebody has tried to challenge the National League, they’ve gone down swinging. Yes sir, the NL is and always will be the only big league – they will have no problem crushing Ban Johnson, Comiskey, and the rest of these hucksters.
Now I’m off for my mid-afternoon pint of corn liquor.

Another reason to despise the Cardinals...
Cleveland was so atrocious in 1899 because the team was purchased by the owner of the St. Louis Cardinals – he didn’t sell the Cardinals or anything, he just purchased a second team for himself. Cleveland had finished 81-68 the previous season but the new owner bought the team solely as a way of stocking the St. Louis roster. He just transferred all the best players onto the Cardinals, including a rather famous pitcher, and left the Spiders with the likes of Harry Colliflower.
Things like this were going on with other teams too (Brooklyn and Baltimore, Louisville and Pittsburgh) but nothing as blatant as the Cleveland debacle. After 1899, the league contracted four teams and enacted the limitation on owning multiple franchises.
...so you can blame the Cardinals for destroying an entire franchise and embarrassing the good people of Cleveland, Ohio.

The Orphans and all these other modern players are sissies...
All these guys are pampered…back in my day we played nude on a field of lava, with a severed human head for a ball, and our paycheck was half of a limburger cheese sandwich. Nowadays all these ninnies do is complain about spike wounds, court the vaudeville belles, and spend their $100/month paychecks on player-pianos and other nonsense.
If these Orphans would toughen up and put a little broken glass in their chaw, they wouldn’t be losing to Cleveland.

the ball is so juiced this year, a player could hit it 385 feet if he hits it well.
the 1890s
were a very high scoring era because 1) pitchers were still adjusting to the mound being moved back from 50’ to 60’6” and 2) lots and lots of errors. The single-season records for runs scored are dominated by players and teams from the 1890s.

All right! Feel that euphoria after the victory.
Good show, all.

You're ON!
Just make sure they use 1880s rules, where “gloves are for sissies” and you can call the pitch you want to hit and catching a ball on one bounce is an out.

SWL, that was inspired good fun – and yeah, a serious productivity hit.
Galvan316’s impression of Santo was brilliant.
And NotSure gets, oh, 1000 points (that's 1899 points which are worth like 92x as much today) for brilliant trolling. "Boo spellcheck" was one of the funniest things I've read in weeks.
Thank to y’all for the nuttiness – very good stuff.

Huh, weird
Not sure how that block quote got in there….what I was trying to say was that NotSure gets a huge number of pre-inflationary points for channelling the Troll Spirit so well. “Boo Spellcheck” has made LOL about six times today.
