Offday Game Thread: Cubs vs. Spiders, Thursday 8/7, 1:20 CT

Cleveland Spiders@ Chicago Cubs

Thursday, Aug 7, 2008, 1:20 PM CDT Wrigley Field

Crazy Schmit vs Bob HowrySunny.

Sunny. Winds blowing out to center field at 10-15 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 85.

The sun is out and shining brightly today, and temperatures are perfect for a day baseball game. Let's enjoy this extra game and have some fun!

4-4 W-L 2-17
5.30 ERA 5.86
43 SO 24
8 BB 62
11 HR 3

The Cubs take the field today in their Orphan Throwback Uni's to face the 1899 Cleveland Spiders.  Some of the regulars get the day off in preparation for the Cardinal series this weekend.  Lou has seen fit to give Howry his first career ML start today, thereby insuring that he'll be unavailable for the next few days. Smart move Lou!  He couldn't have picked a better opponent to help Bob build up some confidence, because the Spiders have posted the worst season in professional baseball history.  This should be an easy win (knock on Wood), but that's why they play the games right?

The rumor is that a certain internet baseball blogger will sing TMOTTBG today...Go Cubs!

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Howry just gave up a HR to Chester Lee, great great grandfather of Carlos Lee. Long line of Cub killers.

i think Lou

couldn’t have gone righty-lefty any better. though Harry Colliflower will be ready in case Lou goes with the left-handed pinch hitter.

Funny thing about Williamson's record

This might be more common knowledge than I give it credit for, but Williamson played for Cap Anson’s Chicago team at a ballpark in the present day northwest corner of Millennium Park. It apparently had one of the shortest left field fences in history, comparable to a modern little league field. Because of this, Williamson had a very skewed home/road differential on his home runs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Home_run#Progression_of_the_Major_League_Baseball_single-season_home_run_record).

One of this fun little facts, before Ruth changed how the game was played.

Did you know?

The Spiders have the worst road record in MLB history, with 109 losses. The Spiders were so bad that teams refused to travel to Cleveland to play them, forcing the Spiders to play 36 straight road games to end the season.

by cwyers on Aug 7, 2008 12:21 PM CDT reply actions

other way around

Cleveland played so many games on the road because they couldn’t draw any fans at home, not because other teams refused to come to Cleveland.

This was a fairly common practice in the 19th century. If you look at the first decade of the NL or some of the other “major” leagues, you’ll see a lot of this, especially from the teams in smaller cities such as Troy, NY.

We sell spatulas...and that's all.

See, you need to understand that the Spiders got screwed.

Their pythag W/L was 26-128, which is much better than their actual mark of 20-134. If Lave Cross and Joe Quinn were better managers, those 6 games would’ve been in the bag! The only real weak point on the team was that Harry Colliflower, and his 8 ERA.

That good because Howry's biggest problem this year has been the longball.

Maybe a few runs through the 1899 Spiders line-up will do him good.

No shame

in losing to a Tarbox team like the ‘99 Spiders. I’m sure the Cubs tenancy to fail against mediocre pitchers like Zany Schmitgall will serve them well.

Another reason to despise the Cardinals...

Cleveland was so atrocious in 1899 because the team was purchased by the owner of the St. Louis Cardinals – he didn’t sell the Cardinals or anything, he just purchased a second team for himself. Cleveland had finished 81-68 the previous season but the new owner bought the team solely as a way of stocking the St. Louis roster. He just transferred all the best players onto the Cardinals, including a rather famous pitcher, and left the Spiders with the likes of Harry Colliflower.

Things like this were going on with other teams too (Brooklyn and Baltimore, Louisville and Pittsburgh) but nothing as blatant as the Cleveland debacle. After 1899, the league contracted four teams and enacted the limitation on owning multiple franchises.

...so you can blame the Cardinals for destroying an entire franchise and embarrassing the good people of Cleveland, Ohio.

We sell spatulas...and that's all.

Well done

The author of this post is not a certified scout, doctor, agent, statistician, manager, or journalist, nor was he ever a very good player, though he tried very hard to be like Ryne Sandberg and was about as scrappy as it gets (in T-ball). Any opinion expressed above should in no way be confused with fact, truth, or reality and is hereby qualified in the following ways: 1) The author does not know as much about baseball as Lou Piniella. 2) The author does not know as much about baseball as Jim Hendry. 3) The author does not know as much about baseball as either Dusty or Darren Baker.

Overheard in the Spiders' clubhouse:

“Despicable! Deplorable!

Some of the worst apple-hurling — and stick-mashing — I’ve seen!”

"And heeeere cooome the pretzels!"

I'd love to take a shot at Monday's

fake game if possible.

It’d be a night game but SWL and I could coordinate something

You're ON!

Just make sure they use 1880s rules, where “gloves are for sissies” and you can call the pitch you want to hit and catching a ball on one bounce is an out.

My compliments to the chef

SWL, that was inspired good fun – and yeah, a serious productivity hit.

Galvan316’s impression of Santo was brilliant.

And NotSure gets, oh, 1000 points (that's 1899 points which are worth like 92x as much today) for brilliant trolling. "Boo spellcheck" was one of the funniest things I've read in weeks.

Thank to y’all for the nuttiness – very good stuff.

Huh, weird

Not sure how that block quote got in there….what I was trying to say was that NotSure gets a huge number of pre-inflationary points for channelling the Troll Spirit so well. “Boo Spellcheck” has made LOL about six times today.
