Owners to discuss blackout solutions
Here's the article from Yahoo . They talk about how the rules need to be changed and that they're really outdated and aren't keeping up with technology.
Living in Austin, I was subjected to blackout rules with Extra Innings for both Astros and Rangers games, even though it's a 2.5 hour drive to downtown Houston and 3.5 hour drive to get to Arlington. Of course, our local Fox affiliate always carries any game with the Yankees or Red Sox before any Cubs game that would typically be on Fox.
We've chatted about this before here and I didn't see any other posts about it. I won't lie, though, I didn't do a search. So if it has been mentioned elsewhere, I'll happily delete it.

Again though
the reason for the blackouts aren’t to make you go to the game in person—that’s the NFL. The reason for the blackouts is to make you watch the game on TV via your local broadcaster or cable company.
You say you don’t get the game via your local broadcaster or cable company? That’s why the system is antiquated. These territories were meant to protect syndication rights of local TV broadcasts—something that was very important in the 1960s but not so much today.

i really hope they do something. I pay for EI every year and willing to pay a little more if I can have access to every single cub game regardless. I live in oklahoma so i’m smack dab in the middle of ranger, astro, and card territory. that on top of the stupid stupid stupid stupid fox saturdat thing cost me several games a year. most of which is at night and on my off day, when catching a game is a MUSTTTT!

I could understand it for games that are on at the time of the national game, but
For noon games on CSN, it makes no sense for them to be unavailable on EI.

Hear, hear
I’m in Stillwater, OK and that Saturday exclusive rights thing pisses me off no end. It offends me to no end that when the Cubs play the Cards and the Cubs are on CSN, I gotta watch the Cards broadcast when I pay good $ for Extra Innings. Man, that irritates me to no end. In a day and age when MLB is losing fans to the NBA/NFL/NHL, on a Saturday afternoon we can only watch one MLB game – whatever Fox deigns to give us. Usually it’s RedSox/Yankees, it seems, same as ESPN. You’d think MLB would want as many TV games on Saturday afternoon as possible, so the kids could, you know, watch any MLB game and grow the fan base. But noooooo.
And I so hate getting shafted with EI and Astros/Cards broadcasts when the Cubs are on CSN.

Wait and see
This sounds encouraging but it still sounds like there is an ‘out’ for the team. I mean technically Comcast Sports Net is offered in my area, just not on my cable system. Are they going to stick with what Selig said when they were going to give Extra Innings to Satellite altogether?
We’ll see how it actually plays out. I would like to hear even more definitive statements.

The current map has some real bad spots
I think I saw Iowa has 5 or 6 teams blacked out. Same thing with Vegas. I say let everyone see every game, or at the very least adapt rules similar to the NFL.

What they ought to do
is sell EI for the price they do but offer subscribers a perk – get one team’s games – all of them – no blackouts – for an extra $ a year. I’d be willing to pay an extra $50 a year to get all Cubs games on top of the EI package. Heck, while I like watching other games on EI, I might be willing to pay $200 a season JUST for the Cubs games (and no others.)

I actually think that there is no reason why there should be any blackouts anywhere...
There has to be some way that MLB can come up with a way to compensate local braodcasters or vice versa to ensure the revenue is shared.
This whole thing is a clusterfuck that should have been avoided. There is WAY too much money to be made on people wanting to watch baseball to allow a single person to be blacked out of a game they want to watch.

That concept would only work
on a PPV basis. (Pay-Per-vVew) You could order up a Cubs game (or one from any other team) as if you were ordering a movie. However, I still think it’s great to have access to as many games as possible.

There hasn't been a post on this yet.
So thanks for posting it. It sounds like they’re going to end most if not all of the territorial blackouts; this quote from MLB president Bob DuPuy is encouraging:
"I see no reason why there ought to be so many clubs able to black out in those territories," DuPuy said. "That’s my intention. That’s my goal. I didn’t get any pushback. The whole thing is about making the game more popular and available."
Ex-freaking-actly. I have always said: if you are willing to pay to see a game, you should be able to, whether you are in Chicago, Iowa, Vegas, England, New Zealand, or anywhere. They may actually do this. Good news.

BLACKOUTS ARE NOT TO GET YOU TO GO
TO THE GAME IN PERSON! THAT’S THE NFL!!!!
Sorry to shout, but I’ve already explained that in this fanpost above and I’ve said it before: Blackouts in baseball have nothing to do with attendance. They’re about syndicated broadcast packages and regional sports networks. I wish people would get that through their heads. The blackouts are to get you to watch the game on your local TV channel, even though most games are no longer available that way, or via the local regional sports network, like Comcast SportsNet Chicago or Fox Sports Midwest, even though such channels are not always offered in blacked-out locations.
The Royals are the big team in the Omaha market, and a chunk of Iowa gets their TV from Omaha. That’s why they claim Iowa. I have no problem with the Royals claiming the part of Iowa along the Nebraska border. But they should have no claim to eastern or northern Iowa.

It's mostly about over-the-air broadcasts, not cable.
That’s why the rules are so archaic. They date back to when teams used to have broadcast networks—Josh, you may be too young to remember the days before WGN was available nationally, the Cubs had a network of stations in Iowa and Indiana, which became their “territory”.
Those networks, for the most part, don’t exist any more. There’s no reason for the blackouts. Period. This isn’t 1970 any more.

Yes, I know
but there is something about teams trying to get cable companies in Iowa or Oklahoma to carry their RSN.
I wish I was too young to remember what you’re talking about, but I first watched the Cubs in 1972 or 1973 with Brickhouse and Boudreau on Channel 15 in Madison.
Actually, when I first went to grad school in Iowa in the early 90s, the Cedar Rapids ABC station still carried about two Cub games a month with the WGN feed.

Right.
That’s the old “WGN Continental Chicago Cubs Baseball Network”. Yes, they did have stations in Wisconsin—LaCrosse, Madison & Rhinelander, IIRC.
In those days “territories” meant something. They no longer do.

the problem with this for me is that it doesn’t address the fox saturday issue. living in denver, i can see every cubs game on mlb.tv except for when they play the rockies (and i’m AT half of those) and when they are on fox (and not picked up here). it still seems silly that i can’t watch a cubs game online even though it’s not available on tv anywhere near me….. if they can enforce blackouts online based on zip codes, why can’t fox let viewers tune into a feed online that is not available in their local cable market? they could still stream the commercials, so they could claim a larger viewership to advertisers too.
....though i am still happy for those of you who may be helped by these proposed changes!

I think the Fox blackouts are stupid, too...
.... but it only applies to maybe 8 games a year. I’d like to see them make the games available online, too—there’s technology that would allow them to insert the local ads from your Fox station in Denver, meaning you’d see the ads that Fox wants you to see, while seeing the game you want to see.
One of these days they’ll do that, but probably not anytime soon.

Isn't that more or less
what they did with the NCAA bball tourney last year? That was awesome, I could stream any of the games, and there were still commercials so they got all their money. Why MLB can’t set something like that up is beyond me.
by chitownhawkeye on Aug 7, 2008 9:15 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
The point isn't commercials per se...
... it’s LOCAL commercials. If you live in Denver (the example given above), Fox wants you to watch the commercials on the local Denver station. Thus you’re forced to watch ONLY the game that’s on in the Denver market.
But technologically, if, say, they made the Cub game available online, the person living in Denver could be streamed the Denver local commercials. Why they don’t do this is beyond me.

One way around the Fox blackout
is to play your games at night. Nothing is blacked out after 6pm eastern.

Right
but that’s not Fox’s or MLB’s fault. The cubs have a unique situation that affects them and them alone. Fox and MLB can’t change everything just because Wrigleyville won’t allow night games on Friday or Saturday.

Why should they stay out of it ???
...Major League Baseball enjoys an antitrust exemption that is granted to them exclusively by Congress, and the US Goverment provides operating licenses to broadcasters as well as regulating broadcasting through the FCC. Finally,
I'd say they have as much right as anyone to find out why their constituents can't watch the game they want when they want. It surely isn't the technology limitations, so the only answer is a conspiracy, which for everyone else in this country besides MLB is a crime.

Not that I'm defending MLB...
... but I did want to point out that the FCC doesn’t grant licenses to cable networks nor does it regulate them.
Also, the antitrust exemption was granted to MLB by a Supreme Court ruling, and Congress has consistently refused to lift it.

Sorry, I know better about the Supreme Court ruling....
...my point is that there could be legislation in this area to force these TV providers to offer pay-for-view to everyone.
The DirecTV monopoly in the NFL and the inability to see the game you want need to be fixed, by legislation if needed.

Territorial Teams>Sports Broadcast Outlets
In west Tennessee, we get SportSouth and Fox Sports South, but we are in the territories of three MLB teams (ATL, STL, and CIN). Three teams for two cable networks means some team is left out, if all three are playing simultaneously. The Reds are usually the odd team out. Fox Sports South will take the feed from FSN Midwest sometimes to put on Cards games.
MLB needs to look at how many available sports broadcast outlets are in a certain area. The number of territorial teams should not exceed that amount. I can’t imagine there are 6 sports broadcast outlets in Des Moines to cover all 6 territorial teams. If there are just 2 such outlets in Des Moines, then they should only have 2 territorial teams.

On Sundays and Few During Week
To their credit, Fox Sports South and SportSouth have been better this season at putting Reds games on TV, when the Braves and Cardinals don’t have both channels occupied. We get about all the Reds Sunday games on cable. We get a few during the week, if the Reds are playing at a different time of day than the Braves and Cards.
The Braves get first priority. We get almost all their games. After the Grizzlies season is over, we get most of the non-Sunday Cardinals games. We don’t get that many Reds games. The Cardinals and Braves being blacked out on EI is okay with me. I wish the Reds weren’t blacked out. Our situation is far better than the ones in Des Moines and Las Vegas.

I'll say in Sacramento
The Athletics are the closest team and I get fewer than 90 A’s games a year. And I can’t watch them via EI because I’m blacked out.
Sacramento is total Giants territory, solely because the A’s can’t get their games on the air here. Pretty much every Giants game is televised here, either on Comcast Sports Bay Area or the CW affiliate.
Personally, I have no idea why Oakland games that are OTA in the Bay Area are not on Comcast Sports West in Sacramento. I mean, what else do they have to show? I think they show about six Monarchs games all summer. The rest is a pile of infomercials and recycled sports shows. A complete waste.
