Cub Degrees of Separation

Yesterday, Kevin Bacon was summoned when BCB poster fuku-domentation said he was friends with the brother of the newest Cub farmhand, Brian Schlitter (traded from the Phillies for Scott Eyre).

I had no idea until last night that I could sorta claim a one (or is it two?) degree separation from a member of the Cubs’ 25-man roster.  Turns out that the star of my ramshackle recreational baseball team, a young guy from Vancouver, played against Rich Harden in high school.

Now, I expect absolutely no one to be impressed by the lame second-hand name dropping involved – but if you’re like me, maybe you find the “degrees of separation” thing kind of fun.  Have you established how many degrees of separation YOU are from the guys on the major league team?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, editor-in-chief (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

I've got two links

not surprisingly, to the two Crazy Canucks. I had the honor of mediating/interviewing both Rich Harden and Ryan Dempster on seperate occasions in front of a group of little league baseball players. It was really cool, but obviously at the time I had no idea both would be instrumental in one of the best seasons for this team in my lifetime.

Having grown up and living in Victoria, I know many of Rich Harden’s friends. From all accounts, and from what I remember talking to him, a really great guy and class act. Same goes for Demp.

That's pretty cool

What I heard last night is that Harden was a good pitcher but not great in high school, threw low 80s, and didn’t become a power pitcher until later when he got bigger. I didn’t realize it, but he was drafted in a pretty late round (approx 30th).

Control issues

a buddy of mine face Rich when he was 17. Rich went the distance, struck out 14…and walked 9.

Glad he’s sorted it out!

I met Derrek Lee at the Project 3000 fundraiser last March.

Does that count?

He is a true gentleman; both he and his wife are very kind and gracious people.

Hmm..

I have a good friend who has a good friend who’s girlfriend once dated Michael Wuertz. How’s that? Yeah, that’s kinda lame. And he’s not even on the Major league roster.

I also personally held Jim Frey’s beer (a Mickey’s Big Mouth) after game 2 of the 1984 NLCS while he signed my baseball card. I was 12. That was kinda cool.

by LeeElia's15% on Aug 8, 2008 8:56 AM CDT   0 recs

At a Cubs Caravan in Racine in 1985, I accedentally kicked over Jim Frey's drink.

I was also 12. He didn’t notice.

Oh, and at the Cubs Convention about 7 years ago, a VERY intoxicated Randy Hundley dropped his drink on the bar at Kitty O’Shea’s and half of it spilled on me. “What happened?”, he slurred . . . .

For you guys who live in or near Chicago

the game should probably be “My Brush WIth Cubness”.

But if you want a new rule that says beer must be involved, my teammate and I were in a pub enjoying pints of Guinness when I learned he had faced (but failed to get a hit off) RIch Harden.

But aren’t stories about the Cubs and booze fun?

by Shanghai Badger on Aug 8, 2008 9:46 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Oh...

I also have a letter from Frankie Frisch on Cubs letterhead from about 1950 when he managed the Cubs addressed to my grandfather responding to a letter he wrote inviting his boys (one of them my father) out for a tryout at Wrigley. It was just a little bit different time back then.

That letter is priceless. It’s framed and hanging up in my office.

What does the letter say?

by Al on Aug 8, 2008 9:58 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm at work...

so I don’t have it in front of me, and I haven’t read it in awhile. But I think Frankie basically encouraged my Grandpa to make sure they continued to work hard, kept up with their studies and maybe someday they would have a shot. But in the mean time he’d love to meet them before a game to see what they got. It was a 2 page letter and its pretty amazing that he took the time to not only repond but ask to meet them. Pretty classy. I different era, indeed. They lived downstate, so it would have been a hardship for them to actually follow up at the time. I wish they had though. The story certainly would have been better. I think my Dad was about 18 at the time and his younger bro about 15.

OK, this is really lame but...

...one of my wife’s best friend’s uncles used to be the general manager of the Cubs. I’m so lame I can’t even remember his name – I believe he served sometime in the late 60s, early 70s.

Update (as if anyone really cares)

My wife can’t remember her friend’s uncle’s last name offhand, but she’s going to get together with her friend this weekend and she’ll ask about it then. I know many of you won’t be able to sleep until I clear this matter up, so I will be sure to post a lengthy, detailed fanpost on this matter first thing Monday morning. Here's a bit of a stretch . . . .

I used to bowl regularly in a league on Thursday nights in Kenosha. The alley had men’s and women’s leagues bowling at the same time. The women’s league that bowled at the same time as ours had a team with Mike Maksudian’s sister on it.

by Shanghai Badger on Aug 8, 2008 10:05 AM CDT   0 recs

Sibling connection

I’m in the math department at UIUC and Maria Girardi (Joe’s sister) got her PhD here in the 80s. At one point, Joe used some of his bonus money to pay for Maria’s travel to a math conference in Europe. He was still in the minors then. One of the old Cubs announcers once observed that three of Joe’s brothers were doctors and his sister was a mathematician, so if he got injured, his brothers could heal him and his sister could help him count his money.

When my father was growing up in the Bronx in the 1930s, he interviewed Hank Greenberg, a neighborhood kid, for his high school newspaper.

I played H.S. baseball against Theriot

We had a lot of good players in our district in Baton Rouge, and Theriot was a sophomore when I graduated so I didn’t take notice of his talent until I was in college and he signed with LSU.

I never woulda guessed he’d be doing what he’s doing today.

Long, drawn out connections

I worked for UC Riverside, where 2007 A’s first round draft pick James Simmons and recent Red Sox call-up Chris Smith both played. Since Simmons was in big league camp, he had to at least speak to Harden and Gaudin.

Plus, I am friends with the baseball coach, who chats with Troy Percival on a regular basis. Troy knows Cliff Floyd, who is bound to have at least a couple of Cubs on his cell phone.

Oh and I interviewed Harry Caray at Dodger Stadium during an internship back in 1989 and he bought my father and I dinner at his restaurant when I visited Chicago later that summer

Man, I’m kind of pathetic for figuring this out…..

random cubs

My husband had his face (badly) drawn on by Will Ohman at the Cubs Convention a few years ago. Don’t ask how or why. Ironically (and thankfully), Will used a non-permanent marker. We ran into him early the next season in Milwaukee, and he didn’t quite remember.

Ate lunch at Harry Caray’s one table over from Ernie Banks, and have been on a plane with Corey Patterson, Scott Eyre (and family), Ryan Dempster, and Will Ohman. Also sat two rows behind Jerry Krause (I know, he’s Bulls – but also Yankees who are managed by former Cub Joe Girardi) on a flight to LA where he almost coughed up a lung. Seriously, he couldn’t stop hacking.

I met Dawson and Grace at a card show in Louisianna

My folks used to sell baseball cards, so they were at a show and got the promoter to let me sit next to Andre and take the autograph tickets. Dawson is my favorite player and I was 17, so pretty star struck. I could barely mumble out a ‘nice to meet you.’ Then someone brought up that Classic card of The Hawk getting drilled. I took the card and passed it over to Andre and in true smartass fashion, say “I bet that brings back some memories.”

Hawk was not amused.
Grace was there signing, too. There was really bad weather that day and their flight was delayed. Dawson left, but Grace stayed and kept signing autographs. He was very nice.

I also met Wood at ESPNZone in Chicago. We were in Chicago for Opening Day and we went to ESPNZone for Sunday night baseball. Kerry and his family were sitting at the table next to us. He was nice enough to agree to pose for a picture after they finished eating. Told him we came from Texas to see the Cubs Opener and he was hooked. :)

With my folks doing card shows, I got to meet quite a few of the autograph signers. Most were pretty brief. The one that still stands out for me is how incredibly nice Ron Gant was. We were at a show in the Astrodome and the Braves were in to play the Astros. I was kinda wandering around in the stadium underbelly where the show was set up. I walked up to the hitting cages and there was Ron Gant. He was incredibly well built. He was there by himself working on his swing. I watched him a bit and chatted with him while he rested. He was really nice. I always pulled for him as a player after that.

I worked with a nurse

The only other thing I can come up with is my grandfather used to speak with Pete Vonachen regularly back when Pete had more to do with the Chiefs and I bet he could be a valuable link to just about any Cubbie.

First job out of college working at a bank in Lincoln Park ...

I was a personal banker and met Glen Allen Hill when he came to the Cubs. He opened up his accounts with a nice big Cubs check. He was a really nice guy and actually left us some tix at will call on a couple occasions. He also donated some team autographed items for a charity auction we had.

Most embarrassing part was my amally retentive boss making me call the Cubs front office to verify his employment. “Umm, Hi I’m calling from XYZ bank, where Glen Allen Hill has opened up some accounts with us, I need to verify that he is a player on your team” Never felt so stupid. Sometime later on while in the break room, thee was a Cubs game on with Hill at the plate & my boss was there when I said, ” How’s that for employment verification?”

I also had the pleasure of meeting Wayne Messmer while working at that bank too.

Mine are weak

I have a co-worker whose little sister dated Billy Petrick in high school. I don’t know if he’ll ever get back to the bigs, but it’s the closest I’ve got to current roster.

A few years ago I was at a game and I lost my friends walking from bar to bar. I wandered over to Sluggers, figuring they’d wind up there eventually. I sat at the bar watching game highlights on the TV and after a while Matt Stairs sat next to me, bought me a beer, and talked for about an hour. He was a really good guy, and now I have an awesome Blue Jays connection.

My last one – my wife worked at a vet clinic where one of the vets worked there part time and another place part time. The other place was an exotic bird clinic owned by member of the ‘69 team, Rich Nye. When he heard how big a Cub fan my wife was he offered to sell her his ‘04 playoff tickets (which of course never got used) for a huge markup. I never met him, but I was a little disheartened that a former big leaguer with a successful business was trying to make a big profit off his freebie tickets.

This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.

He's not a current Cub, but...

Mickey Morandini has lived in my hometown for a long time now. I’ve seen him around town a lot – at the grocery store, at the gas station, etc. When I was in high school, one of my friends babysat his kids a few times. A guy I work with once played a pickup basketball game with him. The dandy little gloveman seems like a pretty nice guy.

Also, my grandfather went to high school with former Cubs coach/manager/broadcaster Lou Boudreau, and they kept in touch until Lou passed away. Unfortunately I never got the chance to meet him.

And – as tough as this is to say on a Cubs forum – one of my first cousins is actually a big-leaguer himself, but is on the roster of (ahem) a certain bird-themed franchise from St. Louis.

I just loved the 07 convention when they introduced all the ex Cubs and most were wearing a suit,

My connections

My dad is a retired allergist. For years, he practiced in the suburbs of Chicago, and had a famous patient or two (Dennis DeYoung of the band Styx, Molly Ringwald – from Sixteen Candles). But my favorite patient of my dad’s was Tim Blackwell, the Cub catcher in the late 70s, early 80s. I never got to meet Tim, but my dad got his autograph for my brother and me. Wish I still had it.

Also, my friend down the street had an aunt who once had a date with Steve Stone. His aunt actually got picked up by Steve at my friend’s house (we lived near Wrigley, and Steve picked her up after a game that he broadcast). Stone drove a convertible, my friend told me later. He got Steve’s autograph. Unfortunately, the date didn’t set off any sparks – I don’t think they went out again. This was in the mid-80s.

My favorite celebrity encounter of a relative

This isn’t Cub related, but my grandpa owned a pharmacy in a hotel in New York City. During the heyday of Beatlemania, it seems the Beatles stayed in that hotel. And one day, George Harrison came into the pharmacy to buy some shampoo, my grandpa told me (how he knew which Beatle it was I always wondered, as my grandpa wasn’t a fan). Or maybe he was. He had a copy of Meet the Beatles in his collection of records, the rest of which were classical and jazz. Once, my cousin offered to buy Meet the Beatles from him, and my grandpa refused. A closet Beatle fan, I suppose.

An unfortunate connection

My boss’s son was in Children’s Memorial here in Chicago. The day after game seven of the 2003 NL Championship Kerry Wood came to visit. Kerry spent more than 30 minutes with the family and from what I’ve heard Kerry was nothing but positive, supportive and gracious. From that day on my boss has held Kerry in the highest regard and just from hearing the story and knowing how improtant the visit was to the family I have a new and deep respect for Kerry Wood.
