WBC - On Life Support?
Well - it looks like the World Baseball Classic might be on it's last legs. The recent announcement by Big Z alomg with previous announcements by other Veneuelan starts that they will not participate may be the death knell of the Classic.
It's not surprising that Selig's turkey laid and egg. Only Bud would undercut his own All-star game by introducing an All-star tournament at the beginning of the season! We all know that Bud is just full of great ideas like this.
Is the WBC worth saving or should it die a quiet death? Only national pride would keep it afloat and I don't know how much of that your going to get from a buch of fat millionaire ball players. What do you think?

Just to clarify
Carlos Zambrano did not “make an announcement”. He was quoted saying he wasn’t sure if he would play or not.
The last time around, feelings about this tournament were very mixed. At the same time, I think the result was pretty successful. It sound like the Venezuelan issue is all about internal Venezuelan baseball politics, not whether or not the tournament is a good thing. Many MLB players, especially the non-US ones, seemed to really appreciate the unique brand of competition. Many fans seemed to have nothing good to say about the tournament, at least those in the US.

I think that is the whole crux of
the situation. Will the WBC be viable if the US players and fans are not interested?

Could a case be made
that if the non-US players all take it seriously, the US players will follow? And if the US players follow, then US fans will too?

That might help keep it going.
The problem with these “Dream Team” type events is that the luster seems to wear off and the players get bored. There is no tradition of the US being the best so there is no national pride to win the thing.
The olympic basketball tournament is popular because the US was dominant for so long and the other countries wanted to knock us off that perch. That kind of passion creates interest in the tournament.

I still think it would work better AFTER the season.
A November tournament would keep interest in baseball after the World Series.

Agreed
It would also calm fears about “players getting their arms jacked” right before the season starts.

I agree with the November thing.
They already play the games in the warm climates. That way no teams lose their players for a couple weeks and the pitchers don’t have to throw real games in March.

No it wouldn't
1) That would require major league players to stay in baseball shape for up to an extra two months, which is not good for pitchers. Pitching is not natural – the arms do need to rest. And to play in November means pitching throughout October even if one’s team is not in the playoffs.
2) Though this may be relatively small in many people’s minds, it would conflict with the Asia Series.
3) That’s football season and if the goal is to get as many people to watch it as possible, it’s silly to create that conflict.

Counterpoint
1) It only requires those who have to play in the WBC to stay in shape for an extra couple months. That’s not that many players.
2) It could be scheduled so as to not conflict with the Asia Series.
3) It could be schedule so as to not conflict with football games.

Countercounterpoints
1) Which teams do you think want their best pitchers throwing for two extra months rather than resting. That there aren’t many players who participate is pretty irrelevant when the ones who do are the best players on each team.
2) Asia Series is in the middle of November. So now, you’d be bushing the WBC into early December.
3) They could do that if they only played games during the week. It’s possible, but I can’t see that happening.

On point 1
I don’t think it has as much to do with the teams not wanting their players to participate as the players themselves. You may see the best players opting out of this tournament if it is during the offseason. Especially if it cuts into it for 2 months. Many players just won’t want to keep playing for 2 months after a long season.

I disagree
no one would care about it in November, and the players are shot by that point.
Best would be to shut down the season for two weeks in May, but we all know that’s not going to happen.

Or... this could be a way to "fix" the All-Star game
The U.S. vs. the World!
And give home field back to the team with the most wins.

there is no back to give..
Home field in the World Series was never given to the team with the most wins. I was alternated between the NL and AL team in the past.

The WBC is great in theory....
but doesn’t work because of the length of the MLB season. Have it before the year, like in the spring, and pitchers get hurt during the regular season. Have it after the WS? The pitchers aren’t in baseball shape anymore.
Send our amateurs like the olympics.

2009 WBC-The Last?
I think so. MLB teams don’t want their players in “meaningless” games. They care more about World Series championships than WBC championships. I see the interest in the WBC waning.

Talk about jumping to conclusions
This is pretty clearly a Venezuelan problem, not a WBC problem, and probably revolves around the shaky politics of that country. (Whoever is in charge is probably a Chavez crony.)
It’s likely to get resolved by the time the tournament rolls around.
And the whole tournament does not collapse if Venezuela doesn’t have a team. Things like that happen.

WBC
I like the WBC and I was in attendance for the USA v. Mexico in Phoenix in 2006. The game wasn’t a sellout, which was sad, because the Mexican fans filled up half of the stadium, but it was a very cool atmosphere to watch a baseball game.
If a change needs to be made, they should maybe use pitchers that aren’t as valuable to their teams. I would keep all of the All-Star position players, because they tend not to be that affected by these events. However, they should use grizzled type vets, like Greg Maddux, Randy Johnson, and Mike Mussina types. They would make the games very competitive and the teams would not miss them like a Jake Peavy or CC Sabathia.

Although
This November Peavy might actually like to pitch for a team that gives him some run support.

My son and I were talking about the WBC last night.
We both love the concept, but money has ruined so much of this sport already , that it prevents the WBC from being viable. The poster’s point about the players being fat millionaires is spot-on – IMO, the large majority of pro (MLB) players – from any country – not going to risk injury, ergo millions of dollars, for “national pride”. Damned sure the owners don’t want that, either, just as NHL owners are starting to crack down on their players participating in the Winter Olympics.
The only option would be to use minor league or college talent to stock the teams, and while the interest might be there for ardent baseball fans, it wouldn’t appeal to the masses, ergo advertisers, ergo networks and media outlets.
Full-circle to my first point – money has ruined so much of this sport already.

Is it money's fault?
That these guys want to be available for the 162 game season? It is their profession after all. Nobody wants to blow an elbow in what is pretty much a marketing exhibition, and it’s a pretty low blow to call them out for it. Between the majors and AAA, you’ve got about 1000+ or so eligible players overall so not everyone needs to take part to make the series work. Plus the WBC was Selig’s baby, so it’s always going to get enough support from the owners to help market MLB worldwide- the players and owners won’t kill the WBC, it would have to be lack of TV ratings and ticket sales.
I loved the 2006 WBC, the American team was fine, and it was fun to see guys like Fukudome and Matsuzaka representing Japan, teams like South Africa throwing out a 17 year old who didn’t embarrass himself on the mound vs. Canada, the amazing fans from Mexico and the DR, even Cuba was cool to finally get to see without getting interrupted by the heartwarming story of some relative from the US Pole Vaulting or Rhythmic Gymnastics team during the NBC triplecast.
