Bernie Mac dead at 50

Not sure what to say about this except I liked Bernie Mac a lot.  He was a funny and well liked individual and he will be sorely missed.  I am shocked as he was hospitalized for pneumonia and I am sure no one saw this coming.

My thoughts go out to his family.  Not sure what else to add to this I figured most saw this already but figured I'd post anyway.  I need more words for this which seems to take a bit away from the post but I will say one more time that I am shocked and hope his family is able to move through this tragedy with help from friends.

From what I know,

he was a huge Cub fan and was a extremely funny guy.

With all due respect

He actually was a South-sider growing up and was a Sox fan.

But that aside, he was a funny man nonetheless, a talented comedian. He will be missed

Really?

I thought he grew up on the South Side and was a Cubs fan.

I might be wrong.

I stand corrected.

He admitted after doing that 7th inning strech that he was indeed a White Sox fan.

I apologize for posting an untrue fact.

Bernie Mac

I cant believe this news. When I was younger I would watch “The Bernie Mac Show” on Fox and thought it was bright, funny, and even educational – really good show that did a lot to advance black comedy in the mainstream. His work on the ocean’s movies will be remembered as well. He was a pioneer, a unique comedian, and from all i’ve heard a great husband and father. rest peacefully, bernie

FWIW

Bernie Mac sang the 7th inning stretch during game 6 of the 2003 NLCS and didnt just say the traditional “Root, root, root for the the CUBBIES!” but instead went with “root, root, root for the CHAMPIONS” and of course the Cubs did not score in the bottom of the 7th, and the Marlins scored in the next half inning that they were at the plate.

Conspiracy theory: Bernie Mac, a WHITE SOX FAN (proof: Mac later admitted that he had hated the North Side’s Cubs his whole life, being a die-hard fan of the South Side’s White Sox, and was seen during the White Sox’ 2005 World Series victory at U.S. Cellular Field.) was the jinx that caused the Cubs to lose the NLCS.

In all seriousness, it seemed odd that he chose to replace the traditional lyrics ot the song, and that a White Sox fan would be asked to sing, but que sera, sera.

One thing you learned as a Cubs fan: when you bought you ticket, you could bank on seeing the bottom of the ninth.

The Mike Royko Factor

Remember when Royko wrote that anti-San Diego column after Game 2 of the NLCS in 1984? Supposedly that woke up the Padres and their fans and started the Friars on their merry way.

Frankly I don’t take much stock in either theory, but that’s my opinion. I think both NLCSs were exercises in collective anxiety attacks once the weather started turning bad.

IMO He completely

stole the show “The Kings of Comedy.”

Really talented and funny guy.

Unfortunately,

even though this other problem he was also afflicted with was said to be in remission - a rare disease, which causes inflammation of the lungs - one would have to think that also played a role in his passing.

Since his death...

was reported (incorrectly) earlier this week, I think it’s safe to say that someone saw it coming.

The only reason he was singing the stretch in the 2003 NLCS was because The Bernie Mac Show was currently airing on FOX…as was the NLCS.

Funny comedian, it’s a shame he’s gone.

I thought the Cubs were in charge of the "guest conductor" bookings

not the broadcaster of the game. Maybe Fox paid the Cubs for this?

My next sig line quote will also be from Lou Piniella, and the first word will be either "Look", or "Listen", followed by a comma.

The playoffs are a MLB event.

Thus, MLB and Fox probably got to pick the singers for the playoffs.

Pneumonia, the quiet killer

So sad that someone so young died. I hope his family and friends find peace.

Well, Mac also had sarcoidosis......

http://www.chicagotribune.com/features/health/chi-sarcoidosis,0,5455872.story

Pneumonia probably was just another terrible side effect, even though his publicist said the sarcoidosis was in remission. It probably never was. If he was to say he was sick, he’d be unbankable—nobody would want to take a chance on hiring him. So, he probably hid his discomfort.

A very talented entertainer…he will be missed.

IIRC

it was on either the Charlie’s Angels or Ocean movie that he was in discomfort and he was a trooper, still showing up everyday and doing his job. I have always like him, seemed like a down to earth guy. My condolences to his family.

sarcoidosis is a nasty, relentless and debilitating disease

it leaves the respiratory system wide open to so many problems .. i have some friends who have it .. You literally come down, barring a miracle of healing, to living day by day when it gets bad. From what it sounded like, Bernie just couldn’t fight the fight any longer and he was a heck of a trooper in dealing with this. I had heard stories that he’d been struggling with as long back as when he played Stan Ross in “Mr 3000” ..

He was a funny guy. His humor was definitely a different breed of things and I only watched one episode of his show to find that it was not my cup of tea .. but it was funny. Even though mi familia lived around the Bush off Buffalo and Avenue O, he was one of our South side tribe .. So sad to hear this!

Well, Next Year is here .. and Jack's century's gotta end some time .. GO CUBBIES!
