MLB postpones the first two games of the Houston Series

I do not understand why they cannot go to a neutral site such as St. Louis. They could even have it in their home state of Texas in Arlington since the Rangers are out of town this weekend. Another blunder by Selig here (or conspiracy!). Besides, they have to make up two games, and the Cubs have only one off day. I don't want the Cubs playing a double header on Monday..
Seriously, does Selig think it is worth it to send the Cubs through this?!?!

Leave it to Bud...
He’s known all week that this storm is heading right towards Houston, yet he sits on his hands and does nothing. Now, it’s too late to move it to a neutral site. Even if they play a game Sunday- there will be likely be hardly anyone there- because of the evacuation in Houston. More so, with the storm likely to blanket Houston/Galveston, who’s to say that they will even be able to play a game Sunday or Monday?
It should have been moved to a neutral site at the least two days ago… So, either Selig is an idiot & the worst commish ever, or it’s a conspiracy. I’m hoping that the Brewers get swept in their 4 game series in Philly, and then they will be so out of it, the games vs. the Cubs that they have left will mean nothing.
Bud Selig must go. Save MLB, fire Selig!!

And hurricanes never change course?
Gustav was supposed to slam into New Orleans. Did it? Selig couldn’t postpone a week ago.
Today’s hurricane posts have been a big gnashing of teeth over nothing. Moving games is a big decision. Should baseball move games if a late snowstorm threatens a northern city and there is the threat for cancellation of a few games?
by rlpete on Sep 11, 2008 6:35 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Snowstorms are not hurricanes.
All the forecasters have been saying for two days that it is heading straight toward Houston. I said he has known all week, (that’s since Monday). Selig once has failed to make a decision, hoping that if he ignored the obvious, somehow the decision would be made for him. When an entire city is being evacuated, it’s not such a big deal to move a baseball game.

Hurricanes change course all the time.....
This one is so big….even a change of course isn’t enough to prevent Houston from having a fairly major storm.
I’m not predicting gloom and doom or anything….but Houston hasn’t had a storm for a while….I don’t think we’ll see any big losses of life or the numbing images we saw from New Orleans…..BUT….this isn’t going to be a walk in hte park….you get the feeling that Houston thinks it’s going to have a rainstorm on Saturday and it’s back to business as usual on Sunday…..that’s what I mean they are in for a rude awakening…..it’s going to take 3-5 days + to get power restored, traffic signals back up and operating, tree branches and palm fronds cleaned up and what not. All those stop lights hanging up above intersections on wires and going to be smashed to the ground EVEN WITH just CAT 1 force winds…CAT2 or 3 …many of them on the steel girders will be damaged.
In 2004 MLB moved games out of Miami for Hurricane Jean. Hurricane Jean made landfall nearly 100 miles north of of Dolphin Stadium.

Maybe he couldn't postpone
But you can’t tell me that they couldn’t have worked something out, such as booking hotel rooms, putting stadium employees on notice, whatever else needs to be done to play in Atlanta or Dallas or whichever empty MLB park was agreed upon IF NECESSARY.
There is such a thing as contingency planning. If the hurricane changed course at the last minute, then play in Houston. If not, go to Plan B. The complaint is that in this case, Plan B seems to be “wing it.”
This is no different than the ridiculous lie that it is “impossible” for the team with the best record to have homefield in the World Series.

HOUSTON AREA CUB FANS
I had tickets to Saturday’s game. I live in Austin and can’t just take off on a whim to go to Houston for a ballgame whenever they decide to reschedule the game. So, I have my 2 tickets available if you would like to buy them.
Section 234 Row 2 Seats 13 and 14
They’re printable tickets, so I can email them to you once I get payment.
I just want face value, which is $44 each. I may even cut you a break if you make me a reasonable offer.

You really need to final a complaint with State AG
I looked at my Cubs tickets and indeed the old rain out policy is missing. It says check Cubs
web site I checked the Cubs AND the Astros and I can’t find ANY information on cancelled games. There very likely is some state regulation on this and it is worth checking into. NO WAY

Ridiculous
Why can’t the games just be scheduled for a neutral site? If this were April or May, the postponement wouldn’t seem such a bad idea. But with just three weeks left in the season, it’s not fair to give the Cubs and Astros several days off in a row for their players to get rusty. And forcing them to make up with a doubleheader seems unfair as well.

Look at the storm track above
St. Louis will have rain, probably on Sunday. No point in sending both teams there, only to have the game rained out.
Arlington makes more sense, IMHO.

Not to be a defender
But being that I work in Sports Entertainment these sort of decisions just don’t get made until the final moment. It’s beyond baseball and revenue. TV stations need to know if they can send out a crew, the stadium needs to see if they have people who are willing to even work that day, etc.
They will make a decision the last possible minute because they can and it’s not affecting anyone until that happens. This happens in every sport for every team in these situations….relax.

relax my a$$
This has been a known problem all week. There are 18 days in the baseball season left and every race in the NL to be decided. The contingency plan should have been made on Monday and executed first thing this morning. They didn’t and it wasn’t. Bud Selig is a terrible commissioner who botched the steriod situation tremendously and this is simply another botch. This series should have been moved to Atlanta and should be played as scheduled; Friday thru Sunday plain and simple.
As far as a conspiracy is concerned, isn’t Bud from Milwaulkee? Won’t it put the Cubs at a disadvantage playing 16 games in the final 15 days (10 on the road)? Oh, and coincidentally 6 of the games during the over worked span vs. Bud’s Brewers. I think I smell something?

Here's what the Cubs do
First, they get back to winning games and essentially wrap up the NL Central. Next, when it comes time to play this three game set against Houston (and it won’t be on Monday given the expected damage caused by Hurricane Ike and Tina) then run out our Triple A callups and guys like Daryl Ward. If Houston ends up sweeping us, then so what. They win the wildcard and Milwaukee goes home. We’ll be sticking it to Bud the Dud Selig and his beloved Milwaukee Brewers who is trying to accomodate by not moving this weekend’s series out of harm’s way.
Cubs win, Astros win, Selig lose, Brewers lose.

Probably
one game on Sunday in Atlanta. Then back to Houston for two on Monday, assuming the damage isn’t too great. Otherwise, two in Atlanta.
I’m betting on Atlanta because 1) the Astros are supposed to play the Marlins on Tuesday, and if they can’t play in Houston, it’s a shorter flight for them and 2) there’s a 20% chance of Rain in Atlanta and a 30% of rain in DC on Monday. Both cities are expected to be clear on Sunday.
And even if it wasn’t out because of Houston’s objections, St. Louis would be out because it’s supposed to pour all weekend there.

I suspect they'll play 1 or if possible, 2 games, Monday.
One or two games will be left to be played at the end of the season, if necessary. I’ll be pleasantly surprised if they can play before late Monday. My experience is that even basic hurricane recovery (clear downtown roads and restore power to the ballpark) takes more than 24 hours. And to think this could have been avoided if they had made the right decision today. They should have taken the players and their families to Atlanta, play Saturday and Sunday there, and play the third game in Houston late Monday, if possible.

The Astros
are insisting that all games be played in Houston. Apparently MLB is at least considering a Monday double-header and playing the third game on the Monday after the season if necessary. Link
I’ve got to believe that this is just the Astros blowing out smoke. I fully understand MLB and the Astros wanting to play as many games as possible in Houston. I even agree with that.
But this plan is just asinine. First, it wouldn’t save the revenue for the Astros unless the game gets replayed after the season. Second of all, it’s incredibly unfair to Milwaukee, St. Louis and Philadelphia.
Why? Because the game isn’t likely to matter for the Cubs. Our magic number for clinching a playoff spot is down to 8. You don’t have playoffs for ties if both teams would make the post-season, so two teams would have to catch us for that game to be meaningful to us.
But for the Astros, who are just three games out of the wild card, that extra game might be crucial. If they end up a half game ahead or behind Milwaukee (or Philly or StL) for the wild card, then the game would have to be replayed. And the Cubs would almost certainly give the start to Randy Wells and probably have a starting lineup of the Iowa Cub all-stars. (Sure, tradition dictates you play your starters. I’d argue: Not in this case.) It’s nearly a guaranteed win for the Astros, which is why I’m betting they are pushing it.
I know everyone thinks we ought to move the entire series to St. Louis or Milwaukee. That’s not going to happen and I think that would be unfair to the Astros. But this plan is out and out worse. Plan to play Sunday in Atlanta (or DC) and then on Sunday, decide whether a DH can be played in Houston or in the neutral city. But do not give the Astros a free game in their wild card chase.
I know I’m alone, but I think Bud Selig is too smart to go along with this cockamamie scheme.

The Astros are apparently being uncooperative
They don’t want to play in St. Louis because the Cubs wouldn’t have to travel
They don’t want to play in Milwaukee because it is too close to Chicago
They don’t want to play anywhere else because they will lose some revenue. I don’t understand why they just can’t suck it up and move to a neutral site. Its rediculous for them to care more about money than doing the right thing (though this wouldn’t be the first time in the history of the world that it has happened)

Another dumb part of moving games to end of season
Here’s something to throw out there.
Cubs wrap up division before hitting milwaukee to finish season,
Milwaukee and Houston still fighting for wild card.
If Astros still are in hunt those games need to be played.
It would then behoove the Cubs that the Brewers win those games so the Cubs don’t have to go to Houston before playoffs.

Perhaps Selig's Brewer bias will kick in
His brain fog may clear, and he’ll see the advantages to the other wild card contenders of playing the weekend games now at a neutral site. The power will be out in Houston at least for the weekend….that’s a given. And public relations impact of playing in Houston on Monday after folks have been devestated in the area would be too much on the league.

Contigency Plan.
Even though a Hurricane is unpredictable, MLB and the Stros should have had a contigency plan started on Monday of this week. They should have had another site picked out for the games, had the staff ready and available to man the site, had the players and their family out of houston and at this site by Saturday AM. Play games on Saturday night. If Houston is saved major damage, play sunday and monday. If not, play Sunday at the Neutral Site. Re-evaluate again, if okay, play a game in houston on Monday. If not, finish up the series at the Neutral Site. Hoping that everything is okay is not strategy or a plan.
Just bad management to not have a plan given the unpredictable nature of a hurricane.
Heck, MLB should have general guidelines setup to handle this situation given that they have several teams that are in Hurricane Country.
I could care less where we play…just play the games.

Has there ever been a tripleheader???
That would be cool if cubs made history with mlb’s first tripleheader, but I think it’s against labor laws to work more than 8 hours.
by aznsensation on Sep 12, 2008 12:35 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Wouldn't be the first
There have been three triple-headers in history, the last being on October 2, 1920 and the other two being September 1, 1890 and September 7, 1896. Of course, back then it usually took less than ninety minutes to play a nine-inning game, so such things were possible to get in before darkness fell.
I don’t know if your comment about labor laws was snark or not, but clearly there is no law prohibiting a triple-header. It would, however, be a violation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and thus would be prevented by the rules of baseball. And neither MLB nor the MLBPA would have any reason to waive that rule.
