Turn on the Weather Channel and it is plain as day there won't be baseball in Houston on Sunday
The storm surge is now estimated to be in the 22-25 foot range, which is above previous estimates. If anybody thinks the city of Houston is going to be in a position to host a major league baseball game by Sunday or even Monday then they are nuts. It is time for Bud the Dud Selig to intervene and for this series to be moved to another city so something of weekend baseball can be salvaged. This isn't Drayton McLane being selfish but rather Bud Selig suffering yet another crisis of leadership.

Well, it's an update.
It is absolutely true that IF MLB wants the Cubs and Astros to play ANY of the three games this weekend, they will have to choose a neutral site, and choose it FAST.
Here’s what I would do: play in Atlanta, since that seems to be the “most available” site as well as the most convenient, and play single games there Sunday and Monday, so as not to overtax rotations or bullpens. Then hold the third game for the end of the season IF it is needed.
That makes the most sense, so they’ll never do it.

I think it's to late,
As the Astros are still in Houston, it doesn’t seem very likely they will be able to leave the city until the storm is over. Who knows how long the damage from the storm will delay the team from leaving the city.
They missed their opportunity to leave, now they will just have to ride out the storm.
Hey, it's a new century!

Hurricanes will turn your world upside down. The decision to move the games has past as the Astros are locked into Houston now.

Right.
The Astros could have flown both the players AND their families out of town yesterday. Now they’re stuck.

Bud's follies.....he is a really poor leader in almost every regard.
…McLean’s greed and myopic view on this entire situation is really disturbing in my opinion.
Instead of focusing on his gate receipts, he could have been charting flights to Atlanta for the players and their families. Now they are all stuck there, the Astros will most likely lose their focus and hopefully fade out of contention.
It’s a sad situation for the people of SE Texas but greed and inept leadership from Bud have made the situation even worse from a baseball standpoint.

If the Astros are part of the hunkered down
They might have problems getting out by Monday. Northcom friend says they think utilities will be down for at least a week with this kind of monster storm.
They are looking to deploy in a big way.
What this drills down is that it will force the Astros to make their case to play the games and could push back the Playoffs if the Astros continue driving.
What Lane needed to do is get his team out of Houston now with a private jet if he could because they might be stranded there longer.

Too late to move these games....Astros are stuck in Houston
So that means we are going to make one and probably two special trips to Houston during our few remaining off days to get these games in.
I hope like heck that the Cubs wrap up the NL Central soon so they can then stick it to Bud Selig and the Milwaukee Brewers he is trying to help out. Clinch the division, then when these games against Houston do come up play our minor league callups and the bench guys. Basically hand these three games to the Houston Astros and let them win the NL wildcard. Stuff it right up the ass of Selig and his Brewers.

As we all know they have a huge series Tues-Thurs against the Brewers and if they have to play a DH on Monday, they will come into the game Tuesday totally exhausted from playing a DH and traveling to Chicago late Monday night.

Here's something.
It’s also possible that Houston players would have used their union powers to block a schedule change that would have forced them to leave town while their families dealt with the storm and its aftermath.
Hendry doesn’t like the wait but understands it.
“We’d like to [have the series moved, not delayed],” he said. “But you can’t expect Astros’ players to leave their families. Those concerns come ahead of these games.”
Everyone assumes that Selig has some NFL Commissioner sort of autocratic power in this matter, but the MLBPA isn’t a bunch of pushovers like their NFL counterparts. This is why these issues are a lot more complicated than a lot of posters around here are supposing. (I’ll try and see if I can find a copy of the relevant sections of the CBA.)

Common sense is largely a substitute for clear, detailed thinking.
You’re talking about displacing 2.2 million people in the Houston metro area alone within a matter of days and then sustaining them – food, water, shelter, etc. All in a situation where most lines of communication – roads, airports, phone lines, etc. – are likely to sustain heavy damages and outages.
Remember, evacuations in Texas (not Florida) didn’t start until the eighth. You’re talking about a massive logistical operation in four days. Anyone who does not need to be evacuated shouldn’t be evacuated, as you are clogging up the lines of communication for those who desperately do need to be evacuated.
Common sense – at least as you’re defining it – doesn’t seem to be able to conceive of the scale of events that are happening right now.
by cwyers on Sep 12, 2008 5:07 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well put.
The problem I have, given the information we know (and what we’ve inferred), is that the Astros organization is being told to stay in a dangerous location, and not given the choice to evacuate.
make/art
by neverAcquiesce on Sep 12, 2008 5:10 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
If you look at the official evacuation map...
…only about a quarter of the Houston metro area was told to evacuate. I have no earthly idea where in that map, say, Lance Berkman’s house is. But if you’re not in one of the specifically delineated evacuation zones, there’s no reason to think that you’re better off leaving your home in hopes of finding an overcrowded refugee camp another 50 miles inland.
At that point, if you’re one of those people being told explicitly not to evacuate… you stay put. And if you’re an Astros player, you’d rather be with your family than not in that situation.
It was always a stupid idea to try to have the Cubs players come down there and try to ride out the storm, but that idea was tabled and the Cubs are now in Chicago. The Astros players, by all accounts that I’ve seen, want to be with their families right now, and I don’t begrudge them that choice.
But anyone who thinks that this is a simple situation for the Astros players right now is depressingly oblivious to the scale of events here.

Thank God!!!
That MLB and Bud were able to get something done today! They were able to get the coin toss done to determine sites IF there is a tie for a playoff spot. Whewwww! I was worried they had too much going on that they wouldnt be able to fit this in. I mean, since they weren’t able to work out a contingency plan all week.
BTW, I agree with Al’s post (second one in this thread). The only problem now is that the players and families may not have left Houston and this could be trouble getting players to hotlanta by Sunday.
Bud and McLane really botched this up.

I look at it this way
The players did not want to play this weekend unless conditions permit playing on Sunday or Monday in Houston. The union or union contract backed them up and Selig didn’t want to push on this issue. End of story – the Astros players are not available to play and nobody is going to work at Minute Maid. They are probably not doing anything because they are waiting for this hurricane to let everybody know what the appropriate next steps are. If there is severe damage in the area, then they might not play Sunday or Monday or into next week either. One thing about arrangements at another ballpark, you have to know when everybody is going to show up and arrange for people to work. It isn’t just facility availability.
by AboutTheCubs on Sep 12, 2008 6:31 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Further...
… if there is severe damage, or longterm power outages, it may not be possible to play at Minute Maid for the rest of the season. They have to think long & hard about what to do about this.

And even more thinking
If the park is OK, they might need to make an emergency hostel area for families who lost their home. In my opinion a much more important way to use the park than any recreational event.

One point of contention
and this may sound harsh, but I’d venture to guess that the vast majority of Astros players and their family do not call Houston home. They may own a second home in the area, rent a luxury house for the season, etc, but these days very few players actually “live” in the city where their team plays. So to paint this as “asking the Astros to abandon their every worldly possession” is a false notion.
The ball was dropped big time on this one but I’ll say that I believe it helps the Cubs. With the fragile state of some of their pitchers and some seemingly tired bats, this could be what the team needs. Further, if the Cubs see the Brewers continue to slide and see their magic number further reduced without even playing a game, they can give the likes of Zambrano more another start off.

I almost never disagree...
…with the general sentiment of this site. It seems that most here are pretty reasonable with their opinions. But, seriously people….a team in a wild card race is trying to protect a home series. Is it really that offensive. It’s possible that they’ll be able to play these games safely, to a home crowd and still make money (crazy idea in a business isn’t it). If they could do that, why in the world wouldn’t they try? Also, there are no less than 8 players on their roster that I know of that live in town (plus Cecil Cooper). I’m sure their preference (as is mine and about 4 million others) is to be at home with their families while this storm passes.
I may be wrong about how bad this going to be but if not, there probably needs to be a big mea culpa on this site.

It is big....
….but that’s not really the point. What happens outside of Houston will have little impact on the city. As I said, I could be wrong, but all day long they have repeatedly downgraded forecasts.

Not the forecasts I've heard.
In any case there are likely to be flooding rains and widespread power outages, which would prevent team employees from getting to work, as well as possibly cutting power to the downtown area.

1st of all I want to say...
My thoughts and prayers are with the people of SE Texas. In some ways the next couple of days will be the worst part of the storm. Until life gets back to normal, everything is just wierd and stressful.
But….if you are making money like that, there is no excuse for not getting your wife and kids out of town … it isn’t that the storm is so life threatning, but to make them live a week w/o eclectrcity, hot water, the tap water not drinkable, etc. etc. ….is poor planning. You should have them at the Ritz in NYC until the power is back on at your house.
The best defense is a good offense

anyway you look at this
Bud and McClaine dropped the ball big time. The whole USA knew that this storm was no joke for a week. Yes forcasting can be fickle and wrong, but to not have a Plan A, B or C is just foolish.
When a storm of this severity is going to reach your home, you get out and so does your family. That to me is the bottom line.

What does Bud
and the Astros have to do with evacuation plans? The local officials make those decisions. If any players lived in an evacuation area (doubtful) then that’s what they would do. If not, the county is asking people to stay at home.

No
I think it is personal responsibility. The Astro’s and MLB are in a unique situation, the end of a baseball season and the effects on numerous teams . Yes it pails in comparison to IKE and the effects of this huge storm, however MLB and the Astros where not prepared and McClaine was stubborn beyond a two year old to move these games.

Houston....we have a fnnnn problem
Right from the 10:00PM Central NWS NHC at Miami discussion…..
“IKE STILL HAS ABOUT A 6-HOUR WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY TO STRENGTHEN
INTO A 100-KT MAJOR HURRICANE. EQUALLY IMPORTANT…HOWEVER…IS THE
EFFECT THAT STRONGER WINDS ALOFT WILL HAVE ON HIGH RISE BUILDINGS.
WIND DATA FROM LAND-BASED DOPPLER RADARS AND AIRCRAFT DROPSONDES
INDICATE THAT WINDS NEAR CATEGORY 4 STRENGTH…115 KT OR 130 MPH
…EXIST JUST A FEW HUNDRED FEET ABOVE THE SURFACE. THERE COULD BE A
REPEAT OF DAMAGE TO WINDOWS IN HIGH RISE STRUCTURES SIMILAR TO WHAT
OCCURRED DURING HURRICANE ALICIA IN 1983. THE PEAK WIND SPEED AND
VARIOUS WIND RADII WERE HELD HIGHER THAN OUR INLAND WIND DECAY
MODELS ARE PREDICTING DUE TO THE MUCH LARGER SIZE OF IKE.”
Alicia caused major structural damage to downtown Houston skyscrapers……

Drayton is INSANE
“If the storm hits Houston, if it has not been severe and we still have power at Minute Maid Park and no flooding, the last key issue is we need the Cubs to be able to fly into Intercontinental [Airport] so we can play Sunday,” McLane said.

Miller Park an option
Skimmed through here and didn’t see it:
Miller Park might be host of the series. It is favorable for Cubs in my opinion but whatever, we’ll take what we’re handed.

Miller Park was an option
but rejected by the Stros…which I agree with. Play the damn games in Atlanta on Sunday and Monday and make up the last game at the end of the season if necessary

It doesn't have to be an MLB stadium
San Antonio, Little Rock, Oklahoma City, and Memphis all have at least AA stadiums. San Antonio especially is probably chock full of Astros fans. The others are Cardinal country, and therefore probably not favorable to Cubs.
Also, MLB could start sniffing for its latest expansion…

All three games are postponed. The Cubs clinch and the Astros finish four games out.
No need to play three games. Lost revenue for Astros.
