Oh, and one more thing....

Think Yost is regretting that decision to pitch CC twice against the Cubs and not at all in this series against the Phils?

If the Phils sweep the Brew Crew, they tie the Brewers for the WC lead, and the Phils got really hot last September and knocked out the Mets, IIRC. It could happen.

by DWChaney on Sep 12, 2008 4:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes, it could.

The Phillies ought to win tonight, with Hamels facing Parra. Hamels ought to eat that lineup alive.

I kind of hope it does happen

I probably fear the Phillies the least out of all the teams the Cubs might have to play in the first round.

Seeing Hamels twice would not be a good thing but no one else on their staff scares me too much.

Brett Myers..........

…………has been pitching very well since his demotion, and combined with Hamels, the Phils may have the best 1-2 starting punch in the NL. This is open to argument, of course, but with their line up and Lidge at the end, I’m not sure how you can say they don’t send a bit of worry into the opposing team.

I’d much rather face the Dodgers in a 5-game series. I’d rather face the Mets, hell even the Brewers.

Their offense is filled with speed and power, they have an exceptional closer, and posess a strong front end of the rotation. Why would we want to line up against them?

sheer stupidity and greed keeps the Ass-tros in Houston.

there is no reason for the owner to keep his team in the city now. The storms path is to come ashore just EAST of Houston. This is the WORST possible scenario as Houston will be hit by the winds from both sides of the storm as it travels up the coast. If the Ass-tros players do not leave town before the storm hits, playing in Atlanta any time this weekend is unlikely.

the only thing that is “karma” about this is I am picturing Berkman with his head under his pillow as this storm passes over him. I do pray for the health of all residents of Houston, but this owner of the Ass-tros is a greedy bastard and a FOOL. His desire for keeping these revenues may mean that he will never see these three games played at all this year. What a jerk.

by halfblindcubbiegirl on Sep 12, 2008 4:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Should lose a lot of energy once it makes landfall.

The issue here is that if you evacuate too many people you risk massive congestion on the transit corridors out of the area. And at this point in time, that’s probably already happened – it’s probably best to seek shelter now rather than to try and get out and risk being exposed to severe weather.

by cwyers on Sep 12, 2008 4:54 PM CDT up reply actions

evacuation just deals with storm surge.

of course storm surge will not reach Houston. the question is whether Houston will have tornadoes, wind and rain damage, power, etc…

THIS IS OUR CENTURY!!

by LAcarl519 on Sep 12, 2008 4:53 PM CDT up reply actions

The question was where people would face "certain death"

and where public officials and journalists would decide to use such extreme warnings.

Of course Houston could be a disaster area real soon. But it was Galveston, on the coast, where the certainty of storm surge and extreme flooding caused the authorities to make such stark warnings.

My next sig line quote will also be from Lou Piniella, and the first word will be either "Look", or "Listen", followed by a comma.

by JohnM on Sep 12, 2008 5:11 PM CDT up reply actions

They were showing

how the evacuation zones are set up and at what category storm those zones are evacuated. It was very surprising to me how close a lot of the “safer” zones are to the bay and gulf. F that, I woud be gone from Houston completely. Put me in OK!

by love the ivy on Sep 12, 2008 4:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah...

They were telling a lot of people in Houston to stay put. The storm surge isn’t going to affect them very much, if at all, so it’s just the winds to contend with. Not that that’s anything to shake a stick at, but that’s what the “authorities” in the Houston area are saying.

Long days and pleasant nights.

Need some travel advice fast

I have to basically take a leap of faith re post season travels. As I previously mentioned I have been saving airline miles FOR YEARS and started with a wad of 250.000 on 3 different airlines. So far I used 25.000 for what I assume will be the first two games of the playoffs on Oct 1 & 2. If Cubs are a wild card I am screwed. I have to decide by midnight in terms of a hold I have if I should use miles for the first two games of round two. Now this is not a question of IF I should get an airline ticket but HOW. I can use 25,000 miles again OR buy a ticket for about $270. I have little experience with miles but I am told you can easily change or reuse them ( for the same destination). Should I use my miles stash or pay for a ticket. My concerns are, If I use the miles it may be a waste and I still don’t know about potential needs for say a game 5 in first series or games 6 or 7 in the 2nd round. Last minute tickets are often very expensive or require more miles. Generally NYC- CHICAGO is an available route because of the large number of flights. If I BUY the ticket and the games are NOT played, I really am out the money as change fees would gobble it up.

Ok long story but $270 or 25,000 Miles ?
Do people who use miles find them easy to throwback and re use if you change plans?

25,000 miles is a pretty standard amount...

of miles to redeem for a free airline ticket. WRT to the original question, I’d check with the airline… some let you return the miles to your account without penalty, others don’t.

you better check on what the fees are to use the miles...

..you still get charged tax and perhaps a fee from the airline.

Personally, $270 spent is a much better value than the 25,000 miles.

You are probably right but I am leaning towards the miles

Turns out unless I want to leave at 7AM and go into Newark on the return the ticket would be $299. If I use the miles the fee is only $10 AND I can reuse AT NO CHARGE for a later NYC-Chicago flight which I always take. The only reason for me NOT to use miles is what I might need for say a ticket to other post season games whose needs are harder to figure and might require more miles.

Well...

1. Legacy of MLB’s total mismanagement. Probably the worst single trade in the history of the game: Bartolo Colon and Tim Drew to the Expos for Lee Stevens, Brandon Phillips, Cliff Lee, and Grady Sizemore. Colon was then dealt for for Rocky Biddle, Orlando Hernandez, Jeff Liefer, and cash six months later.
2. ZERO farm system in 2005 when they got here.
3. The 2005 mirage year, which gave us all some hope.
4. Frank Robinson – love him, but he was a lousy manager towards the end.
5. Jim Bowden, who is awful.
6. They have a penchant for long term contracts to guys who suck.
7. Frugal (not cheap) owners.

"Don't worry, Joey. We'll go next year. They're in the World Series all the time" ---My grandfather to my sick father, October 10, 1945

by flyingdonut on Sep 12, 2008 6:42 PM CDT up reply actions

All of this is true

but to defend the indefensible Colon trade, Omar Minaya was operation under the assumption that the team would be contracted at the end of the season and that anyone who couldn’t contribute that season was worthless to the Expos. They would have lost Sizemore, Lee and Phillips anyway.

So the mismanagement wasn’t the trade, but rather believing they could get away with contraction.

Of course, this led to the crappy farm system you mention in #2. MLB pretty much fired all the Expos amateur scouts in 2002 because they weren’t going to have a farm system the next season anyway. Of course, all the good ones got jobs with other organizations and never came back.

Numbers five and six go together. They give long-term contracts to players who suck because Bowden is awful. Aaron Crow was a disaster too that you didn’t mention and you can blame that on Bowden.

I think the long-term future is good if they fire Bowden, which I believe they will. But by “long-term future” I mean 2014 or so. Ouch.

Which is pretty funny...

considering that if they have to postpone the playoffs at all, Selig’s argument that giving home field for the World Series needs to be determined with the Some Stars Game instead of the team with best record is blown to hell.

“All that has been cleared up and the game, which is the best All-Star game, has intensity. The best overall record doesn’t work. You can’t say to our people in October, "OK, we’re going to city X and we need 5,000 to 8,000 hotel rooms.” Where exactly are you going to get them? You’d have chaos.

Now they might end up calling City X and saying they need 5,000 – 8,000 hotel rooms for another 5 days.

Long days and pleasant nights.

Selig's argumentfor the ASG deciding home field

It makes zero sense to me, but …. that’s his argument.

It will be a split-admission, day-night doubleheader. First game at 1:35 p.m. Second game at 7:35 p.m.

Cole Hamels will pitch tomorrow. Joe Blanton and Brett Myers will pitch Sunday

Milwaukee was initially ruled out, partly because of an event scheduled on the field over the weekend and partly because the series could amount to extra home games for the Cubs, who play 90 miles down Interstate 94 at Wrigley Field.

As I was watching the hurricane coverage I kept having two images pop into my head:

1) anger over the 40% of Galveston residents who decided to wait it out and I kept asking myself, “what would make you stay on basically a sand bar in the ocean,” and

2) giggles about Lance Berkman with his head under his pillow as the storm passed over his home in Houston…poor fella. I am sure he spent the night in the fetal position.

I do hope that the residents of Texas made it through this storm safely. I just don’t understand the macho attitude of those who live on the coast.

THIS IS OUR CENTURY!!

by LAcarl519 on Sep 13, 2008 8:28 AM CDT reply actions

I agree.....

Why you would choose to sit and try to ride out a storm this huge, is ridiculous. No personal belongings of mine are worth my life, the life of my family or friends. I can always rebuild and build new memories, new possessions. What really gets me is they ignore the warnings to flee, get told they’re on their own, and yet still call for help and expect to get rescued.

That anybody in the Astros organization or MLB for that matter entertained thoughts of trying to play baseball after a major hurricane ripped through the city of houston is ridiculous. Based on what I’ve seen on Fox news here in Kuwait, Houston as well as Galveston took a pounding. They’re talking about fires, mass flooding, and mass power outages. And yet this was supposed to be taken care of by tomorrow so they could play baseball? Even if it were, where were the fans going to come from? Who in their right mind would want to come spend precious money and gas to come see a baseball game, when most likely, they still can’t get power or basic necessities to their house? Were the astros going to cry foul because they got 3 home games and nobody came to watch? This should have been rescheduled/played at a neutral site, and the decision should have been made days ago, and if the Astros protested, then MLB should have said either play or forfeit. To risk all this for butts in seats is beyond ridiculous. It just absolutely boggles my mind that MLB would allow this.

by nmcubsfan on Sep 13, 2008 9:47 AM CDT reply actions

Even if no one shows

the games are already either sold out or close to sold out. The astros don’t have to refund no shows.
