Ike??
Hey, I was wondering everyone's thoughts on weather the current time off will help, or hurt us? Alot depends on how major league baseball will determine how to make up these games. Has anyone heard when they will make them up? It will probably help our bullpin and rest some starters in the short run, but in the long run, if we have to play three very meaningfull games at the end of the season, how does that effect us? Now, if we have things wraped up, I say rest everyone and let whoever gets in, gets in, as far as playoffs.

Based on early reports from the damage from Ike
I don’t see how MLB or the Players Association (or the police and untility officials) allow Houston to schedule any games in this series in Houston. I would be irresponsible and the Astros could have some legal exposure if they insist on playing Sunday or even Monday.
Go Green! Go White! GO STATE! (#13031 on the Cubs season ticket waiting list...)
The rest may hurt or hinder
I am sure, in the middle of a stretch drive like this one, mid-month, this is an unexpected boon for both. The time off for both teams is going to help everyone get a little rest, a mental break, and some time to think through what’s going on with their teams. Everyone’s going to have aches and pains that these couple of days off can’t hurt. Giving our rotation time off, especially Z and Harden will be great. And Kerry sure needs to put in a full days work, however .. I think his rust showed big time these last few appearances he’s pitched.
Of course, this works both ways for the Astros too.
But the momentum can hurt too. Every team can testify that being involuntarily stopped from their routines when things are going well for them sometimes results in loss of focus and drive in those intangibles that directly impact how well they play .. and until they meet on the field, we really won’t know ..
Well, Next Year is here .. and Jack's century's gotta end some time .. GO CUBBIES!
I think it's a plus
Yes, our boys got two of three in STL, but they weren’t exactly rolling like thunder. And I think a few days off, and a chance to get out from under the weight of that losing streak might help a lot, especially since they went into this weekend on an upbeat note.
Of course, it could all be setting up a really ugly situation at the end of the season, but that’s another thread for another day!

You know who this is really good for?
It keeps him in the lineup (when they start playing again), but gives him the rest he needs. I love what he does for our pitching staff and our lineup. Keeping him in the game gives the Cubs the edge over almost every other MLBteam.
Just from the point of view of public relations
…when they begin counting the dead and the huge amount of damage in Houston…MLB would be idiotic to begin playing baseball anytime soon in Houston.
Agreed.
This is the first time I can remember a direct hit from a hurricane on a major league city. For Drayton McLane to even suggest that the Cubs should try to fly to Houston tomorrow is the height of selfishness.

Selig showed tremendous leadership
He chose to punt, basically. Make no decision and allow it to be made for him. I can’t believe they will play two games tmr. They are talking about power being out for parts of Houston for two weeks. And, just who is going to show up for these home games that McLane was so determined to hold on to? If I had a ticket and they played the games tmr I would sue in small claims court. There is a difference between a rainout, and a hurricane.
If I were an Astro I would have been asking the union to put pressure on the team to get everyone out of there. It isn’t like camping. No water, no sewer for maybe weeks? They should have just gotten out of town. Now, some of the players have houses in the extreme suburbs. Some have family that don’t live there. But, if it was me, I’d have been out of there.
Hurt our momentum?
I know we just won 2 out of 3, but even those games looked a little shakey to me. We’ve been in a rough stretch for the last 10 or so games, 2 or 3 days rest couldn’t have come at a better time for a team that will almost certainly be in the playoffs 2 weeks from now. We need to come off this break and build some real momentum going into October.
Btw, I saw that 6 games were PPD last night due to rain, that’s 12 affected teams. I’m not a historian, but what’s the record for something like that?

Maybe they're brothers?

That's what I meant
That actually happened once and then MLB made a new rule saying you couldn’t be the player to be named later for yourself. They also made a rule to stop the Orioles from penciling Steve Stone in as the ninth hitter and then pinch hitting for him the first time he was to bat. I can’t remember why Earl even was doing that but they stopped him. And midgets, yes, MLB even discriminates against height-challenged people from pinch hitting. What’s up with this sport?

I know about the midget rule
because Bill Veeck put in a midget as a pinch hitter with the St Louis Browns, but I’ve never hear about the Steve Stone thing. I’d love to know the reason Earl Weaver was doing that.

I'll go find my book by Earl and let you know what the logic was. I know it made sense 20 years ago but I don't remember now what he was trying to accomplish

Regardless of where MLB might like to move the game,
when will the Astros players and coaches be able to get out of Houston?

Houston airport status
Checking this status, I see reopening of the airports not expected until tomorrow Sunday (no time projected). That could change of course.
Idea
If the games are completely wiped out without even a makeup on Monday.
The Cubs need to get some work in against someone.
Bring up some top minor leaguers play an exhibition sell tickets for sunday afternoon or Monday and donate money to hurricane relief.
I don’t know if it’s feasible.
Go Cubs

Exhibition games are prohibited during the regular season
Otherwise, it would be a decent idea.

I'm not sure that's true
Way back before interleague play the Cubs and White Sox played an exhibition game during the season. Maybe they have changed the rules since then.

The rule changed after 1999, I think
The games between the Orioles and the Cuban National team in ’99 were the last regular-season exhibition games (except for the Hall of Fame game, which is now going away too.)

With cub fever
With Cub fever being what it is now a workout could probably sell tickets with maybe autographs for 5 bucks a pop for hurricane relief.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Ike scoured the city’s seawall, demolishing landmarks including the Balinese Room, a historic nightclub and one-time gambling establishment dating to the 1940s. Also destroyed were Murdoch’s Pier and a Hooters restaurant, the latter said to have crashed into the sea at 1 a.m. with an explosive roar.
