Cubs could be at Miller Park vs. Astros

Hey,

I'm a diehard cub fan living just outside Milwaukee and am salivating at the idea of the Cubs/Astros games being played at Milelr Park. According to MLB.com they're going to make an announcement today. Hopefuly this site wil keep everyone posted on ticket info. We may have scored a couple of extra "home games." In a way I'd rather see the team get the extra rest, but how cool would it be for my team to be only 20 minutes away for a change?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, editor-in-chief (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

This was reported

on CNS Sports Rise this morning also. Hope it happens as the threat for rain is over most of the country. I think the most important thing is to get the games in right now and not push this back to either teams disadvantage. The argument that Houston wants the sold out games played at home right now is invalid. After watching the storm damage this morning in Houston, who the hell is going to want to attend a ball game?

This is only the beginning....Lou Pinella end of '07 season and Chicago Transit Authority (the band when they were really good).

Astros travelling?

Will there be a problem getting the Astros players and coaches out of Houston?

by Carolina Cubbie on Sep 13, 2008 9:52 AM CDT   0 recs

That is my thought......

are they all safe and ok? With all the power outages is there a way to get them and their families to a place where this could happen?

i heard last night

on the brewers’ radio station that the miller park option has been ruled out by MLB. The Astros don’t want to play at Wrigley or Miller. But that may change as the reality of the situation settles in.

even if they do agree to go to MIL, I wonder if they will be able to make the trip.

by circuitclout on Sep 13, 2008 9:53 AM CDT   0 recs

The astros had thier chance

to do the right thing and they screwed it up. MLB should step in and do the right thing and play the games somewhere, anywhere.

As of 11:00 last night...

Miller Park was still being considered. Stay tuned.

Houston airports open as of now...

I saw on TWC this morning and just checked online as well. All Houston airports are open. Here’s hoping it works out to play the games in Milwaukee. Just wondering, but do you think Brewers fans would buy tickets to this game? And if they did, who would they cheer for? They’re trailing the Cubs by 5.5 games and lead the Astros by only 3 games in the WC.

by rynomite23 on Sep 13, 2008 11:18 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

They would root against both teams

But I know some Milwaukee fans who were rooting against the Cardinals in the last series. The WC is theirs to lose, and they’re playing a good Phillies team so I’m going to guess they’ll root more against Houston.

by daeviant on Sep 13, 2008 11:31 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Brewers fans who enjoy baseball in and of itself will probably attend.

And I would guess they’re more worried about the other team 3 behind them than the one 5.5 ahead.

I've never done it before

but I think if it happens I’ll pull my son out of school to take him. I’ve taken him to a different ballpark each year for the last 5 years, and so far haven’t made it anywhere this year. Never been to Miller Park. Road trip!!

Brewers fans

Realistic Brewer fans are rooting for the Cubs to beat the Astros.

Theyhave to be more worried about the Astros catching them than being able to catch the Cubs,.

I thought Miller Park

was taken for at least part of the weekend with some charity event scheduled. But if that event doesn’t rule it out, then it is a great option. Miller has a dome, so the weather in southeast Wi. won’t matter as much and, presumably, people can make it there to work or attend. It might be better for both teams to have the highest gate receipts possible under the circumstances and this makes the appeal for Cubs fans a positive. I also think it should be easier for the Astros to travel than for others in the Houston area because they have their own chartered plane (I assume). At this point if they can leave the area they should and get these games played. If Milwaukee can make it happen – go for it.

IMHO, I think it's gonna happen in Milwaukee. Stay tuned....

Play these games in Milwaukee, or Minnesota

Look, Bud Selig had better get off his ass and get these games played somewhere right away. Too bad if the Houston Astros don’t like it. We’re not the ones who have the most at stake in these games. Houston and Milwaukee are!

Selig needs to take a dirt nap soon for the good of the national pastime.

Actually this is what happened;

“This could be the biggest series in the history of this season,” McLane told the Houston Chronicle. "And the fans would be a tremendously inspirational force for our players. And I didn’t want our players to be away from their families.

“We’re standing up for our fans and for our players. It’s just not right to have them leave their families to play at another site like Atlanta or Cincinnati. I said that to (Commissioner Bud Selig) several times (Thursday) and I said it again (Friday).”

This was posted in the Tribune today. Selig and his lack of leadership actually listened to this non-sense. Rather than stepping up and providing common sense and a plan, he was manipulated by this garbage. And so, we wait…

by thisisitflyfishing on Sep 13, 2008 10:56 AM CDT   0 recs

I don't think its non-sense...

Glad he is standing up for their fans. Although I’m sure it is mainly money. Selig listening to them may be non-sense, but not management sticking up for its fans.

by JPetey on Sep 13, 2008 11:05 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Stupid quote in that McLane quote
And I didn’t want our players to be away from their families

Then he should have chartered a couple of planes to fly all of them out of Houston right after Thursday night’s game. Instead, they’re all stuck riding the storm out. How idiotic.

What fans are going to show up?

Roads closed, curfews, no power at home, possible house damage. 40,000 each day are still going to show up? Yeah right.

My next sig line quote will also be from Lou Piniella, and the first word will be either "Look", or "Listen", followed by a comma.

by JohnM on Sep 13, 2008 2:59 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Word is,

Selig and McLane have devised a solution. The Cubs are to play day night double headers Tuesday thru Thursday this week. Cubs will fly from Chicago to Houston each day this week while playing the Brewers: 12 noon in Houston each day followed by night game at Wrigley vs. Brewers. This will allow Houston to keep its home games and Brewers and Houston are happy.

by thisisitflyfishing on Sep 13, 2008 11:03 AM CDT   0 recs

Or how about a split squad

The Cubs play both teams simultaneously. All they have to do is bring up like 20 more players from the minors.

by daeviant on Sep 13, 2008 11:35 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I would think

that something like this would have to get union approval. I can’t imagine MlBPA giving a thumbs up to that idea. It would make more sense, fi Monday is not an option, for the Cubs/Astros to play a DH on Tuesday and then the Cubs would play a DH on Wednesday with the Brewers. (And the Astros and their next opponent would make the same adjustment.) Then the Cubs/Astros would play the third game at the end of the season if necessary. I’m not sure this is a good idea. I just think it’s better than doing all that flying. This is an extraordinary situation and accommodations have to be made by both sides.

See here.

That article also says...
But the Astros want to play the games in Houston if possible, but while the ballpark is playable, conditions around Houston — where more than 80 percent of residents have no power — may make it impossible to play the series at home.

by Al on Sep 13, 2008 12:07 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Frankly...

I understand the desire to have the home games, but it’s awfully arrogant of Drayton McLane to be pushing this so hard when it is a GAME and people have lost their homes and livelihoods…I don’t care where they play, but Houston should NOT be the site of any professional sports games for at least a week! Get the power back on first, then talk about the recreation…having been through a few natural disasters, it becomes a 24 hour recovery process for the first few days and there’s no time nor desire for recreation for about a week…

by Tater01 on Sep 13, 2008 1:37 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

It's Houston or bust is the message I get out of this...

Screw it. Let this 3 game set get played at the conclusion of the regular season. By then I’m confident the Cubs will have wrapped up the NL Central title and the best record in the league. Therefore the games will be meaningless to the Cubs. Play our Triple A roster guys, lose the three games and let Milwaukee’s famous son Bud the Dud Selig explain to the Brewers and their fans why he handed the NL Wildcard to the Houston Astros.

This isn't 1969...is this 1969?...this isn't 1969, is it?

Yes

But then you get the 2007 Rockies in the World Series. However, it’d “teach a lesson” to someone.

by chilango2 on Sep 13, 2008 1:22 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Just wondering

I didn’t hear or read anything this morning, but maybe there are other teams looking to reschedule games elsewhere. It doesn’t make as much sense when both teams are already in town to play, but if they can’t play because of all of this rain… and they can get to a domed stadium…

by AboutTheCubs on Sep 13, 2008 11:33 AM CDT   0 recs

Here is a question

If the series is moved to the end of the season and the astros need to win all three games to clinch, then would they even bother playing game 2 and 3 if we win game 1. I think not.

another scheduling nightmare, what if after the Cubs and astros finish this three game series when the season is over and the astros and brewers end tied for the wild card. This could be 4 games played between the end of the regular season and the playoffs.

"Destiny is a matter of choice, not chance"

by MerlinDog on Sep 13, 2008 11:41 AM CDT   0 recs

Wild card

This very well could come down to 2 or 3 games.

Another thing is the Cubs could clinch before they hit Milwaukee at the end of the season. They want to get their rotation in line and such for the playoffs. That might put Houston at a disadvantage.

As excited as I be for Milwaukee

I’d be happier for the city of Houston, if Minute Maid was in good enough shape for a ball game. That it was safe enough for fans to make it there.

80% without power

80% of the residents of Houston are without power. They made it sound like this does not include downtown where the ballpark is. Question: How long will those without power be without it? How many can’t get the car out of the garage until the power is restored?

Anybody insisting on playing games in Houston over the next few days should give it up.

If this hurricane is like any I've been through

there will be very few fans able to even consider going to a ball game in the next several days. They will be dealing with downed trees, roofs leaking, flooding, and no electricity. No power means no refirgeration, no air conditioning, no clothes washing etc. It’s an enormous mess. “Hey, I know, let’s go to a ball game!” But maybe it wasn’t that bad a hurricane…..?
