Let's Try This Again Thread: Brewers vs. Phillies, Saturday 9/13, 2:55 CT
Milwaukee Brewers at Philadelphia Phillies, Sep 13, 2008 2:55 PM CDT
While a large swath of the central and eastern USA is about to be hit by the remnants of Hurricane Ike, the Brewers and Phillies will try to begin their series this afternoon. The Cubs were going to work out at Wrigley Field today, but this photo taken from the Wrigley webcam at 10:30 am says that isn't happening:
And with the White Sox likely rained out of their doubleheader this afternoon, the first game of which was going to be shown on Fox to about 24% of the country (Just think! You were going to be treated to the commentary of Rob Dibble if you were in that Fox region!), the Brewers/Phillies game will now be shown to just over half the country. See the link below for info on your market.
This link was posted in the comments of a couple of posts last night, but it bears repeating here: as of 11 pm last night, Miller Park was still under consideration for the Cubs/Astros series:If that series is moved to Miller Park, there would be a game later in the day Sunday and a doubleheader on Monday. And you can bet Cubs fans would flock from Illinois to attend those games. This was confirmed on the Brewers website:
Brewers spokesman Tyler Barnes confirmed that the team is on stand-by, and is waiting for direction from MLB.
We shall see. If I hear anything, I'll post it ASAP.
UPDATE: You can rest assured that playing in Houston will be impossible. The Ravens/Texans game that was rescheduled from Sunday to Monday has been postponed due to damage at Reliant Stadium, which is about six miles from Minute Maid Park. No reports from Minute Maid yet, but there may very well be damage there, too, or elsewhere in downtown Houston that would make it impossible to play there.

This game is on Fox. It was originally to go to only 26% of the country, but with the likely White Sox rainout, it will now be seen in a little over half of the USA. For tonight's schedule see the MLB.com Mediacenter.
Baseball-reference.com game preview (at posting time this link was not working, but it should be later this morning or early afternoon)
I'm not going to open overflow threads for this game -- if this one gets too slow, please feel free to open one on the FanPost list.

makes sense
I’m just starting to wonder if its going to be window only, and if so, my wife and I need to start driving north now.
To put it in perspective, we haven’t been able to go to a Cubs game all year for a range of factors, so this might be it. Even almost drove to Cincy last weekend to just to see them.

Some updates from chron.com
Downtown Houston closed for cleanup
No flights out of Houston till at least tomorrow
So I think it’s clear: no games in Houston. Iffy on whether the Astros could get out in time to play tomorrow in Milwaukee. We await further info.

Guys we’re innundated in Action Ridge. Husband is in basement pumping the sump pump (God that sounds dirty doesn’t it?).
Had to cancel bachelorette party tonight for good friend. Ironically before we knew her sister was only going to be able to be in town this weekend to do this we were going to go to Houston for this series.

This discription from the AP doesn't sound promising
If they’re cleaning up downtown Houston, how can they host a baseball game?
Howling ashore with 110 mph winds, Hurricane Ike ravaged the Texas coast Saturday, flooding thousands of homes and businesses, shattering windows in Houston’s skyscrapers and knocking out power to millions of people.

I'll be surprised if the Astros players can get out of Houston Saturday night or Sunday AM.
I still can not understand the stupidity of MLB for allowing the greed of Houston ownership for keeping the team in Houston. Do they really think they would play games on Sunday IN HOUSTON after a major hurricane? By mid-day Friday MLB should have forced a better outcome to this problem.
BTW, the Mayor of Houston is asking residents of Houston to stay inside at the current time, and to drink only bottled water. So they really think this city will be in “playing condition” tomorrow?

Exactly.
If Drayton McLane was really concerned about his players and their families, he’d have chartered a couple of planes to fly them all out of town right after Thursday night’s game.
Instead, they’re all stuck there. Stupid.

I blame the players for not getting their families out of there not McLane.
They certainly have the financial means to do so.

But if the players have to stay
their families might have opted to stay with them to be together. The entire organization should have been given the choice to evacuate them and their families if that’s what they so chose.

you can put lipstick on McLane's decision all you want,
I think it came down to simple greed. He kept looking at those 125,000 tickets sold this weekend and he didn’t want to give it up.
I don’t think he spent 30 seconds thinking about anyone’s safety or practical logistics. Sorry. I don’t buy it.

The funny thing is...
…Astros players and fans seem to disagree with the prevailing opinion at BCB about how outraged they should be. If you look at the comments of actual Astros players and fans, they want to try and salvage the series at home at almost any cost that doesn’t involve actual risk of human life.

there is a SHOCK, the players are standing behind the
decision of the owner (the guy who pays them). And the fans, who are already out of pocket for the ticket, want the games played in Houston too. I am not surprised that Houston fans want to see the games played at home…eventually.

Looks like the Astros are really making the case to play in Houston tomorrow
Summary:
Minute Maid Park appears to have survived Hurricane Ike with only minor water damage at Union Station.
The stadium is ready for use whenever it’s safe enough to play a game downtown.
``I feel really relieved,‘’ said Bobby Forrest, Astros vice president of building operations. ``A lot of unknowns were answered.
``You know, if we had to play baseball tonight and the storm was gone, we would have been able to play baseball tonight.’’
Forrest and 48 other Astros employees stayed overnight to monitor the stadium.

This guy just don't get it ..
Unbelievable. I just don’t get this guy’s density.
Are the airlines, airports, hotels and livery services going to be functioning? All of those good Texan folk who would be needed to pull this off for Bobby to get his paycheck this week might be just a WEE bit distracted by things like:
1) Massive disruption if not destruction of infrastructure that enables them to freely move around the area
2) Ongoing search and rescue operations
3) Curfews that the authorities may have in place to keep law and order
4) Contaminated water in the municipal system
5) No electricity, which means no operation of food and waste management systems at the park .. or hey, any restaurants AROUND the park .. or the hotels food for basic family problems.
6) OH, BTW, no power to the homes of the ball players. By the way .. remember them? And no power for their $10,000 SubZero refrigerators, which means they are in a full no cool situation .. and they are going to be losing food and they’ll have kids who are going to need to be fed.
7) And not to be forgotten, the Chicago Cubs are going to be expected to fly in to take on the Astros.
Yes, the little people of Houston are all just going to drop what they are doing to fatten that cat’s wallet. In a pig’s eye, I might add ..
Hey Ernie! Let’s play two … IN ATLANTA ..

“As soon as it’s safe to travel – it’s still blowing out there – we will get a couple hundred scouts to go out and do the assessments, either in vehicles or in helicopters, to fly over the lines, see where the damage is and begin to pull together a restoration plan. That could take 24 to 48 hours, depending on the weather.”

Astros are putting pressure on Selig to hold the games in Minute Maid.
The Cubs have lobbied Selig to have the series moved to a neutral site, but McLane has held his ground in part because his players want to be by their families during this stressful time. McLane said he wants to give his fans the opportunity to watch the potentially crucial series at home.
"This could be the biggest series in the history of this season," McLane said via phone from his home in Temple. "And the fans would be a tremendously inspirational force for our players. And I didn’t want our players to be away from their families.

And while residential areas are without power...
…apparently parts of downtown have power. And the park is playable.
At this point, there are two logistical challenges:
1. Getting fans to the park.
2. Getting the Cubs to Houston.
Here’s the real kicker, though – if you want to reschedule the games to a netural site, you have to get the Astros out of Houston first. So #2 is a concern for both scenarios.
by cwyers on Sep 13, 2008 1:04 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
this is the point I raised yesterday.
That even after the storm passed, it was unlikely that either team would be able to travel to/from Houston for 24-36 hours. The owner is a myopic idiot, solely focused on greed.
Also: hotel rooms may be needed for displaced residents. Is it fair for the Cubs (and their entourage) to come to town to take hotel rooms that do have power? Logistics are just as important as the stupid ball park.
THIS IS OUR CENTURY!!
by LAcarl519 on Sep 13, 2008 1:31 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Third logistical challenge.
Getting enough team employees — many of whom probably lost power or maybe even lost their homes — to the ballpark to be able to staff a (possibly) full-house game.
The whole idea is ridiculous. Get the Astros out of town to Milwaukee or Atlanta and play the games there.

I'm really not concerned about the Brewers at this point.
The Brewers have essentially pissed away any shot at winning the division, and have hemoraged a decent chunk of their overall shot at the playoffs. They aren’t even really chasing us right now – they have much bigger worries in fending off the Phils and the Astros.

As someone who used to do PR for the US Marine Corps...
…and who now works in local TV news, I think I have a pretty good idea of how the process works on both sides. It’s a very imperfect conduit for the transfer of information. But the short version is, when you take someone who isn’t a subject matter expert and have them try to boil very complex issues down to an AP news brief, and you mandate that they write to a 5th grade reading comprehension, a hell of a lot of nuance gets lost.

… which means they can only play two of the three-game series, tomorrow, and hold one till the end of the season in case it’s needed.

FWIW
Sox & Tigers have no common off days remaining — game would have to be held till 9/29.

Best scenario for the Cubs is to face the Dodgers in the NLDS. We need Milwaukee or Houston to get the wildcard. I do not want to face a hot Philly team ( which they would be if they won the wildcard). Cubs are 3-4 vs Phillies, 5-2 vs LA, 6-4 vs Brewers, 2-0 vs Mets.

I assume that's because you think they are good enough to beat the Cubs?
So you’d rather see the Cubs face the teams that were good enough to beat the teams you already think can beat the Cubs?

I imagine there are a lot of negotiations happening in the background at this very moment.
The Astros are probably being pigs, insisting that the games be at the Juice Box. And the Cubs point to the logistics of having a game in Houston. And MLB trying to make a decision that Bud Selig likes. A real horribly stupid situation.

Question
Anyone know if there’s a site somewhere that would indicate the uniform numbers of past Cubs players?
While I’m sure that Ron Santo (10) and Hank Sauer (9) will be next on Al’s magic nuber uniform countdown, I’d like offer opinions on 8, 7, 6, etc. Unfortunately, I didn’t save my old Cubs game programs.

Hi, guys, just wanted to post my dream scenario...
I’m on my way to Coors Field on a sunny, 75 degree day, to watch the Rockies-Dodgers game. I just wanted to post my “stick it up your a$$, D-Mac” scenario.
1. The entire Cubs-’Stros series is postponed (no game on Monday).
2. The Cubs proceed to win enough games to have (at least) four more wins than the Brewers on Sept. 28
3. The ’Stros go cold and end up with at least four fewer wins than the Phillies, Mets, and Brewers.
4. The Commissioner cancels the three games because they do not affect the pennant race.
5. D-Mac ends up refunding ticket prices for the cancelled series without having any revenue from a neutral field series.
6. The ’Stros players blame D-Mac for not flying them and their families out of Houston before the storm and allowing them to keep their hot streak going at a neutral site.

I thought this was the case all along!
why stop a hot team from playing NOW? Asstros fans would clearly prefer to delay the games versus play in Milwaukee. I continue to think that McLane should have had the team out of there on Friday morning at the absolute latest. This should have been a Sat/Sun/Mon series in Milwaukee that everyone could have SMOOTHLY planned for in advance.
What is going on now is silly and it is cooling his hot team off. It would be interesting karma if in the end, he has to refund the money for 2-3 of the games. Serves him right.

Brewers
If they lose today, and they appear on their way to a possible loss, they’ll be 6 back with 16 to play. Teams have coughed up such leads (the 1964 Phillies, the 2007 Mets), but it’s very rare. I like the Cubs’ chances a lot.

Cubs vs Phillies
Cubs were 3-4 vs Phillies in 07 and 3-4 vs Phillies in 08.
Phillies have 3 MVP type players: Howard, Utley, Rollins + Victorino and Burrell
Cubs can’t hit Hamels.
Go Brewers. Best case scenario is 2-2 split.

No....
Best case scenario is 4-0 Phillies and the magic number reduced as much as possible.
Neither of those 07 or 08 games were in October. Hence, they get thrown out.

Check out what Bruce Miles has to say about the Astros and MLB regarding
the Astros-Cubs series right here.
Also, note the following comment from a Cubs fan living in Houston that I just have to quote (sorry, Al):
Good call not coming to Houston. Power is out everywhere…I went for a drive and there is NOTHING open. No stoplights were working, no gas stations were open, no restaurants, nothing. The only reason I have internet access is that we plugged our modem up to the handy-dandy generator I was smart enough to go buy four days ago.
Plus, I don’t think Bush airport will open until Monday. Yet, ol’ Uncle Drayton is still beating the “it’s not fair to our fans if they move the venue” drum. Ah, hello….people don’t have power. I don’t think running off to MMP (if you can get there-roads are littered) is numero uno on their priority list.
Disclaimer: I’d do it (try to get to MMP), but I’m a Cubs fan. Going out of the way to see our team regardless of circumstances is written into our genetic code.

ICancel Houston games. At end of year…IF Cubs have division wrapped up and Astros have shot at w/c….make Astros play team they have shot for Wild Card with.

no word yet on when the Cubs play next?

I'm not sure...
I want to be rooting for the Phils… I mean, if Milwaukee is going to play this bad, it would be better if they were in the playoffs.
Long days and pleasant nights.

Isn't it something of a given
that the team that plays well down the stretch is likely to grab the WC spot?
Possibly why so many of them have won the series lately…

cubs
i doubt texas is worried about playing a ball game right now.these games could be saved for the end as other teams await.phillies are helping out right now.if we can take it to the brewers maybe we can finish this up. let,s hope this little rest helps the cubs out and cools down houston.tired of people yelling 1969 at me.

Hey Al..
Do you think the Cubs will break their all-time walk record this season? Looks like it’s going down to the wire. I’d like their chances better if Dome was playing more.

And I'll throw it in here, too
Two games moved to Milwaukee, Sunday at 6PM Central, Monday at 1PM Central.
USA Today has a few paragraphs on the decision. (Thanks *zevkalman*)
cubs.com has essentially the same info, but shorter.

"If [Ruth] had [called his shot], I would have knocked him down with the next pitch." -Charlie Root

And the two stories have a conflict on the start time for tomorrow's game
USA Today says 7 Eastern, cubs.com says 7 Central.

It looks like the Brewers are only opening up part of the stadium...
…and thus are probably assured of a sell-out.

Will it be on CSN or WGN?
or blacked out because of the ESPN game of the week.
