Let's Try This Again Thread: Brewers vs. Phillies, Saturday 9/13, 2:55 CT
Milwaukee Brewers @ Philadelphia Phillies
While a large swath of the central and eastern USA is about to be hit by the remnants of Hurricane Ike, the Brewers and Phillies will try to begin their series this afternoon. The Cubs were going to work out at Wrigley Field today, but this photo taken from the Wrigley webcam at 10:30 am says that isn't happening:
And with the White Sox likely rained out of their doubleheader this afternoon, the first game of which was going to be shown on Fox to about 24% of the country (Just think! You were going to be treated to the commentary of Rob Dibble if you were in that Fox region!), the Brewers/Phillies game will now be shown to just over half the country. See the link below for info on your market.
This link was posted in the comments of a couple of posts last night, but it bears repeating here: as of 11 pm last night, Miller Park was still under consideration for the Cubs/Astros series:If that series is moved to Miller Park, there would be a game later in the day Sunday and a doubleheader on Monday. And you can bet Cubs fans would flock from Illinois to attend those games. This was confirmed on the Brewers website:
Brewers spokesman Tyler Barnes confirmed that the team is on stand-by, and is waiting for direction from MLB.
We shall see. If I hear anything, I'll post it ASAP.
UPDATE: You can rest assured that playing in Houston will be impossible. The Ravens/Texans game that was rescheduled from Sunday to Monday has been postponed due to damage at Reliant Stadium, which is about six miles from Minute Maid Park. No reports from Minute Maid yet, but there may very well be damage there, too, or elsewhere in downtown Houston that would make it impossible to play there.

This game is on Fox. It was originally to go to only 26% of the country, but with the likely White Sox rainout, it will now be seen in a little over half of the USA. For tonight's schedule see the MLB.com Mediacenter.
Baseball-reference.com game preview (at posting time this link was not working, but it should be later this morning or early afternoon)
I'm not going to open overflow threads for this game -- if this one gets too slow, please feel free to open one on the FanPost list.
Discuss amongst yourselves.

makes sense
I’m just starting to wonder if its going to be window only, and if so, my wife and I need to start driving north now.
To put it in perspective, we haven’t been able to go to a Cubs game all year for a range of factors, so this might be it. Even almost drove to Cincy last weekend to just to see them.

Some updates from chron.com
Downtown Houston closed for cleanup
No flights out of Houston till at least tomorrow
So I think it’s clear: no games in Houston. Iffy on whether the Astros could get out in time to play tomorrow in Milwaukee. We await further info.

Guys we’re innundated in Action Ridge. Husband is in basement pumping the sump pump (God that sounds dirty doesn’t it?).
Had to cancel bachelorette party tonight for good friend. Ironically before we knew her sister was only going to be able to be in town this weekend to do this we were going to go to Houston for this series.

This discription from the AP doesn't sound promising
If they’re cleaning up downtown Houston, how can they host a baseball game?
Howling ashore with 110 mph winds, Hurricane Ike ravaged the Texas coast Saturday, flooding thousands of homes and businesses, shattering windows in Houston’s skyscrapers and knocking out power to millions of people.

I'll be surprised if the Astros players can get out of Houston Saturday night or Sunday AM.
I still can not understand the stupidity of MLB for allowing the greed of Houston ownership for keeping the team in Houston. Do they really think they would play games on Sunday IN HOUSTON after a major hurricane? By mid-day Friday MLB should have forced a better outcome to this problem.
BTW, the Mayor of Houston is asking residents of Houston to stay inside at the current time, and to drink only bottled water. So they really think this city will be in “playing condition” tomorrow?

Exactly.
If Drayton McLane was really concerned about his players and their families, he’d have chartered a couple of planes to fly them all out of town right after Thursday night’s game.
Instead, they’re all stuck there. Stupid.

you can put lipstick on McLane's decision all you want,
I think it came down to simple greed. He kept looking at those 125,000 tickets sold this weekend and he didn’t want to give it up.
I don’t think he spent 30 seconds thinking about anyone’s safety or practical logistics. Sorry. I don’t buy it.

The funny thing is...
…Astros players and fans seem to disagree with the prevailing opinion at BCB about how outraged they should be. If you look at the comments of actual Astros players and fans, they want to try and salvage the series at home at almost any cost that doesn’t involve actual risk of human life.

there is a SHOCK, the players are standing behind the
decision of the owner (the guy who pays them). And the fans, who are already out of pocket for the ticket, want the games played in Houston too. I am not surprised that Houston fans want to see the games played at home…eventually.

Looks like the Astros are really making the case to play in Houston tomorrow
Summary:
Minute Maid Park appears to have survived Hurricane Ike with only minor water damage at Union Station.
The stadium is ready for use whenever it’s safe enough to play a game downtown.
``I feel really relieved,‘’ said Bobby Forrest, Astros vice president of building operations. ``A lot of unknowns were answered.
``You know, if we had to play baseball tonight and the storm was gone, we would have been able to play baseball tonight.’’
Forrest and 48 other Astros employees stayed overnight to monitor the stadium.

This guy just don't get it ..
Unbelievable. I just don’t get this guy’s density.
Are the airlines, airports, hotels and livery services going to be functioning? All of those good Texan folk who would be needed to pull this off for Bobby to get his paycheck this week might be just a WEE bit distracted by things like:
1) Massive disruption if not destruction of infrastructure that enables them to freely move around the area
2) Ongoing search and rescue operations
3) Curfews that the authorities may have in place to keep law and order
4) Contaminated water in the municipal system
5) No electricity, which means no operation of food and waste management systems at the park .. or hey, any restaurants AROUND the park .. or the hotels food for basic family problems.
6) OH, BTW, no power to the homes of the ball players. By the way .. remember them? And no power for their $10,000 SubZero refrigerators, which means they are in a full no cool situation .. and they are going to be losing food and they’ll have kids who are going to need to be fed.
7) And not to be forgotten, the Chicago Cubs are going to be expected to fly in to take on the Astros.
Yes, the little people of Houston are all just going to drop what they are doing to fatten that cat’s wallet. In a pig’s eye, I might add ..
Hey Ernie! Let’s play two … IN ATLANTA ..

“As soon as it’s safe to travel – it’s still blowing out there – we will get a couple hundred scouts to go out and do the assessments, either in vehicles or in helicopters, to fly over the lines, see where the damage is and begin to pull together a restoration plan. That could take 24 to 48 hours, depending on the weather.”

Astros are putting pressure on Selig to hold the games in Minute Maid.
The Cubs have lobbied Selig to have the series moved to a neutral site, but McLane has held his ground in part because his players want to be by their families during this stressful time. McLane said he wants to give his fans the opportunity to watch the potentially crucial series at home.
"This could be the biggest series in the history of this season," McLane said via phone from his home in Temple. "And the fans would be a tremendously inspirational force for our players. And I didn’t want our players to be away from their families.

And while residential areas are without power...
…apparently parts of downtown have power. And the park is playable.
At this point, there are two logistical challenges:
1. Getting fans to the park.
2. Getting the Cubs to Houston.
Here’s the real kicker, though – if you want to reschedule the games to a netural site, you have to get the Astros out of Houston first. So #2 is a concern for both scenarios.

this is the point I raised yesterday.
That even after the storm passed, it was unlikely that either team would be able to travel to/from Houston for 24-36 hours. The owner is a myopic idiot, solely focused on greed.
Also: hotel rooms may be needed for displaced residents. Is it fair for the Cubs (and their entourage) to come to town to take hotel rooms that do have power? Logistics are just as important as the stupid ball park.

Third logistical challenge.
Getting enough team employees — many of whom probably lost power or maybe even lost their homes — to the ballpark to be able to staff a (possibly) full-house game.
The whole idea is ridiculous. Get the Astros out of town to Milwaukee or Atlanta and play the games there.

I'm really not concerned about the Brewers at this point.
The Brewers have essentially pissed away any shot at winning the division, and have hemoraged a decent chunk of their overall shot at the playoffs. They aren’t even really chasing us right now – they have much bigger worries in fending off the Phils and the Astros.

…that the local government will say that if that is, in fact, the case.
The simple fact of the matter is that all of us on BCB are operating on incomplete information right now. That’s why I’m ready to just sit back and wait for the people who do have all the information to make the decision. As someone who used to do PR for the US Marine Corps...
…and who now works in local TV news, I think I have a pretty good idea of how the process works on both sides. It’s a very imperfect conduit for the transfer of information. But the short version is, when you take someone who isn’t a subject matter expert and have them try to boil very complex issues down to an AP news brief, and you mandate that they write to a 5th grade reading comprehension, a hell of a lot of nuance gets lost.
