2008 Cubs: Who needs nine innings, when you only need a 7th?
Weird reaction
The other times I’ve watched a Cubs pitcher get close to a no-hitter, I was nervous, but not this time. I don’t think it was because I had so much confidence in Zambrano; it was that this was the first Cubs no-hitter that had meaning beyond its personal meaning to the pitcher. When the bottom of the 9th started, I was almost certain that the Cubs would win, no matter the number of hits that the Astros would get, and that was the most significant thing. We’re 71/2 up with 15 to go. Go Cubs go.
Last one with meaning
before this was Ken Holtzman’s in August 1969 – and we know what happened after that. But it’s not going to happen again.

This was the highest game score for a no-hitter since Randy Johnson's masterpiece in 2004
when The Big Unit scored 100 against the Braves, striking out 13 on his way to a perfect game. There have been other pitching performances with higher game scores, but it’s been 2004 since a no-hitter scored this high.

I am so jealous that I couldn't watch the whole game.
I paid as much attention as a I could to the tiny grainy barclay feed. In the 8th is when I realized, “hey, I don’t think Z has given up a hit”. After that it became a mad scramble to see it as clearly as possible. Thank god ESPN kicked in for me in the 9th. Sadly, I didn’t have the emotional buildup y’all had. I did have the shakes, but not tears. Hopefully in October…….

what were the odds of Zambrano pitching a no-hitter at a hurricane-delayed neutral site game like that? well, as my hero Christopher Moltisanti said, “What were the odds of Lou Gehrig dying from Lou Gehrig’s disease??”

Another Gem From Brewerfan.net
I think the Zambrano no-hitter added some hilarity to it. We’ve looked awful all month and were just swept right out of the lead in the Wild Card, and on the same night our biggest rival and one of the most hated pitchers by Brewers fans throws a no hitter in our ballpark and is celebrating surrounded by 20,000 Cubs fans.
That toxic combination of despair and fate does not meet often.

Never thought I’d see the day when a Cub threw a no-hitter. I watched Chuck Rainey and Jose Guzman lose each of their no-hit bids with 2 outs in the 9th. I watched Z lose one in the 8th in 2003 on a lousy call by the ump.
I was one when Pappas threw his, so I’ve waited a long time.
Seeing Z do it today is a benchmark in my life as a Cub fan. Though my Cub fandom won’t be complete till they win a World Series, this was a major milestone for me. I honestly never thought I’d see this happen.

…… is the absolute poor sportsmanship over on Crawford boxes. Being upset your team lost is one thing, but they’re calling Zambrano all sorts of names, blaming it all on Selig, and generally embarrassing themselves. CSN just showed interviews
with some of the players and they all felt from about the 5th inning on he was going to do this. Soriano said he just prayed no on hit the ball his way.
oh man can you only imagine the last ball being a flyball hit to left and soriano
losing it in the lights or something
"This is why Major League Baseball does not need instant replay, because then every single play will then be reviewed." -- Joe Morgan, 5/18/08, referring to an umpire ruling a Carlos Delgado homerun foul when replays showed it hit the foul pole.

No-nos during my time as a Cub fan
1956 – Sam “Toothpick” Jones 4-0 vs. Pirates, walked the first three batters in the 9th, then struck out the side!
1960 – Don Cardwell, first start as a Cub, vs. Cardinals, Moose Moryn with the game-saving shoestring catch
1969 – Kenny Holtzman, Aaron’s “3-run homer” turned around by the stiff north wind, Billy Williams catches it in the “well” — NO strikeouts
1971 – Ken Holtzman’s 2nd no-hitter against Cincinnat in June
1972 – Burt Hooton on a cold April day vs. Philadelphia
1972 – Milt Pappas, the “almost perfect” game, thanks to Fatso Froemming
And tonight’s masterpiece from “Z”
ESPN NEWS says...
That they are going to show Cubs post game comments/interviews in the next segment.
Well, I'm going
to head to bed. I know I won’t be able to sleep for a while yet. I recorded Sports Center so I’ll watch that.
Congratulations Carlos and to Geo for calling a great game too.

Just adding
to the chorus of praise for Z.
Its the first no hitter for a Cub since I started following them, and as he’s one of my favorite players i’m so happy for him and the team.
Onwards and upwards

This was the 3rd Cubs no-hiiter that I that I watched since I've been a fan.
I can still remember Hooten’s and especially Pappa’s no-hitters. I was only a little fart but it made me watch every game all these years, anticipating the next one and it finally came tonight! Too bad I only got to see the last of the 9th because WGN didn’t have it down here in Peoria but I listened to the rest on the radio. What an exhilarating effort! Made me think of Milt barking at that fat SOB on that ball four pitch, shoulda been a perfect game. I remember bringing my Mom into the room and showing her the Padres had nothing but zeroes on the scoreboard. Great memories! I still can’t believe Z did it!! Go Cubs!

Just woke up in Vienna! Big Z I love you!
This is the most incredible event of my cubbie life. I was three years old the last time the cubs had a no-hit. I fell asleep when it was 5-0, but had no idea the cubs were having a no hitter! Next year is here!
