Bob Brenly Gets Contract Extension

For those who like Len & Bob -- count me among them -- Bob will be broadcasting Cubs games through 2012 after signing a four-year contract extension:

Bob Brenly, whose contract was set to expire in a few weeks, has agreed to a four-year extension worth in the neighborhood of $3.5 million, the same as the deal that brought him here when Brenly and Len Kasper replaced Stone and Chip Caray after the ugly 2004 season.

Good move. Len & Bob make a good broadcast team and get better every year.

I think Len keeps getting better—but Bob Brenly adds nothing to the broadcast team. His remarks are usually a rehash of the corporate line—no new information, no questioning.

Personal attacks

Just because he doesn’t make personal attacks against the players and make the broadcast all about himself like Steve Stone doesn’t make him a company man.

Brenly--Rehash of the Corporate Line?

I seem to recall Brenly quite exasperated with a couple of players (remember his statement that anyone in the dugout can play LF better than Soriano?). I also remember him taking the Cubs to task for quite a few bad plays (he seems to especially call out poor baseball fundamentals). I don’t think he necessarily rehashes the corporate line…his job is to bring enjoyment and a certain baseball expertise to the television audience, not to provide a daily dissertation on the failings and faults of the team.

I agree

in fact, I think there are times when the “corporate office” has a few words with Bob to try to get him to tone down some of his criticisms. Fortunately, he has enough integrity not to put too much stock in their objections.

The interview Bob did with me for BCB...

… said exactly that — he doesn’t hesitate to criticize. I don’t see him taking the “company line” at all.

besides

the dodgers, maybe nats and maybe 2 more teams—we have the best broadcast team. we should feel lucky. I watch many many baseball games a year—at least a 1000 a year. most teams have broadcasters that are freaking horrid in some way or another.

I like Bob Brenly

And I’m really happy he got his contract extension. I was just giving him a little trash-talk ‘cause he always seems to mention at least once a week on the air, and belabor the point over and over, that to have a good marriage a guy has got to say "Yes, I was wrong. I’m sorry, dear."

Not really annoying to me, just a little funny.

yeah but...

those words are a man’s second best friend in marriage (the dog being first of course). I can’t tell you how many times a simple “Yes, dear” has smoothed things over. I’d give him a contract extension just for getting the word out.

Glad to hear it. Also means he won’t be going to MIlwaukee as a manager next year when Yost gets canned if they don’t make the playoffs.

I think Len and Bob might be here for the long haul. Same with Hughes.

Brenly to Milwaukee wasn't likely, anyway

They have Ted Simmons on their coaching staff already and would probably want someone from their past. Pat Listasch would be a more likely candidate from the Cub organization, as he was a A.L. Rookie of the Year for the Brewers and is highly regarded as the I-Cubs’ manager.

I think you've got to offer it to him

or risk losing him to another organization.

by Josh77 on Sep 14, 2008 11:26 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Someone

is going to offer Listach a job. Maybe not as a major league manager, but as a major league coach. I was only partly joking when I said that Listach was the #1 prospect on the Iowa Cubs.

Listach would be a good fit for the Brewers, but I doubt they’ll hire him as manager. As SB said, Ted Simmons is sort of in line there and I think the Brewers want a “name” coach anyway—someone with managerial experience elsewhere. (Simmons was a GM, but that’s probably close enough.) They want to convince their players that a grown-up is in charge after Ned Yost.

They won’t hire Showalter though.

by Josh77 on Sep 14, 2008 11:25 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I'd think they'd go after a "name" manager, not promote a "name" coach...

… unless they want to hire Robin Yount as their manager, which wouldn’t be the worst idea.

Say! I think the Reds are probably going to buy out Dusty after this year and Walt Jocketty is going to hire Tony LaRussa. Think we can talk the Brewers into hiring the “name” manager from Cincy?

"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx

by Al on Sep 14, 2008 11:34 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Not impossible

unlikely, but not impossible.

I’m trying to think who’s on the market and would be considered a “get.” Certainly LaRussa if he doesn’t stay in St. Louis. Showalter, but he’s got such a terrible reputation amongst players that it would hurt Milwaukee’s efforts to attract free agents (and they’re going to have to replace Sabathia and Sheets.)

Would Grady Little be considered a "get’? Willie Randolph? I don’t know. Torre would make a lot of sense since he started his career in Milwaukee, but he’s not going anywhere next season.

I think that Dusty is going to be back in Cincy next year, but if what you suggest actually happens, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that the Brewers grab Dusty.

I personally enjoy his style and his humor and think that He and Kasper make an excellent combo in the booth.

One thing that I’d like to see Kasper do is change his HR call up a little. But BB is an excellent color guy given he was after all a WS winning manager.

It took me a couple of years to warm up to Len and Bob

But I really like them now. I signed up for MLB.tv this year and before they let you choice which teams broadcast to watch you got stuck with usally the home teams broadcasters and listing to some of the awful broadcaster out there makes you relize how good Len & Bob are. The Reds team for example spend a lot of the broadcast talking about how much they hate the Cubs and thier fans. Len and Bob are respectful of the other team and thier fans

by MerlinDog on Sep 14, 2008 8:10 AM CDT   0 recs

I don't know that I agree with that

I’ve watched the Reds broadcast on EI when I couldn’t get the Cub feed. Just because they aren’t pulling for the Cubs to win, it doesn’t mean they hate them. There are 30 teams in MLB — and 29 of them have broadcast teams that aren’t going to be pulling for the Cubs if the team they work for happens to be playing the Cubs. So many people think that every media member should be rooting for their favorite team — it’s not going to happen.

Last Saturday the Reds broadcast team

was showing Cubs fans in the stands and scribbling them out. The announce sad on the air, I really hate losing to the Cubs and I’ll be glad when all thier fans are gone. He also made a comment on how uniformed Cubs fans were and that they didn’t know the rules of the game. Plus earlier in the year they were commenting on how badly the fans treated Dusty and said it in a very mocking tone in thier voices. I have Fox Sport Ohio on my cable system so I see more Cubs reds game on thier then I do on Cubs broadcast. It’s not just Marty!!!

And for some reason

It started this year. I’ve been watch Cubs reds games on Fox Sports Ohio for 9 years now and this year they have taken a very snarky tone with the Cubs. Maybe it has something to do with Dusty. And a point I forgot to make before, it’s more then just rooting for thier team, I understand that home town teams root for thier team.

Reds Attitude

We were at the games last weekend, and this anti-cub attitude was exhibited by the reds organization. After friday nights game, they posted a “W” flag – white background with red W on all the screens and the scoreboard. We asked the staff (in the club level and as we were exiting) if they had ever seen this after other games, of course the answer was no. The same flag was displayed on Sunday as well. Most of the trivia questions were regarding the cubs, glimpses of the telecast from the internal tvs had lists of things that have happened since the cubs last won the World Series. Pretty much take the visiting cub fans money, and bash them to their face while they’re here.

But outside the stadium, the vendors were awash with cubs gear, and the correct version of the W flag.

My son really likes Len & Bob. I do too, for that matter.

I used to turn the volume down and listen to Ron & Pat, but with the timing between the radio and my TV so far off, I was only mildly disappointed to have to listen to the TV broadcasters. I’ve grown to like Len & Bob quite a bit. Now I’m only really aggravated when I have to listen to ESPN broadcasters. I also liked Steve Stone and Caray. I just read the Stone will be joining Hawk Harrelson in the TV broadcast booth next year. That will be a true homer btoadcast. Talkative, too.

I heed his commentary and criticism

more than anyone elses, as he has played the game and managed the game, each with success. And for what it’s worth, I think that having been a catcher allows Bob to offer a better quality of insight than the average washed-up outfielder or relief pitcher.

This news was overshadowed by Stone joining Hawk in the TV booth for Sox games (which I think is a great pairing; Stone should provide a calming effect to contrast Hawk’s heart-on-his-sleeve emotional outbursts).

When Stoney joned Hawk for a couple of games, Sox games became enjoyable to watch.

The Cubs are my favorite team but I am a baseball fan and it’s nice to know that I will be able to enjoy AL baseball next year.

We are so lucky to have 2 MLB teams in Chicago and I’m excited that both broadcasts will be watchable!

I’m hoping DJ will turn down the radio job and the Sox will come to their senses and switch Farmer back to color and hire a new play by play person.

I really didn't want to like Brenly after the way Stoney was forced

out by the crybabies. While he’s not quite the Nostradamus Steve often is, I find that Brenly is a good listen, and he makes appropriate criticism often enough that I wouldn’t call him a company man. Len, on the other hand, he’s been annoying me to no end with his “impending doom” calls during the recent slump – he was totally giving me that 1969 feeling.

Stone will do fine with the Hawkeroo, he was good with Harry pre-stroke, did great work with that month and a half of guest announcers, and then helped Harry along through the rest of his career. There’s no shame for DJ getting replaced by the top color man in baseball.

Len and Bob and Pat Hughes

I think all 3 are in for the long haul.

Len and Bob had some big shoes to fill because so many fans worshipped Steve Stone and Chip was Harry’s grandson. A lot of fans were determined to hate them.

Pat Hughes is the best broadcaster in this city. Even Sox fans like him.

I wouldn’t be surprised if all 3 are still here in 15 years.

Anyone else hear a rumor Santo might retire if the Cubs win the world series or really severely cut back his schedule?

I liked Stone very much

But I like Brenly a lot, too. I thought he was great in his first go-round with the Cubs, when he did radio with Santo and Thom Brennaman in the 1990s. He certainly has shown he’s willing to be critical if necessary. Plus, I don’t think I’ve ever heard him sound awkward or unprepared. He’s a natural.

In fact, I think WGN wanted to hire him full-time as a staff announcer back in the day, but he decided to get back into coaching.
