Official "I Was There" Thread for 9/14/08

Oh my gosh. My hands and tongue were numb/tingling. The 23,441 fans were rockin' Miller Park. With every strike, the stadium EXPLODED. I hugged the fans around me. My family and my best friend decided on a whim to go last night.

I sat in section 208, row 6, seat 15. How about you guys? Where were you, what was going through your mind, when did you realize it was likely to happen? Who were you with? Any other interesting anecdotes that you have, please share them.

Also, I apologize for the 5th fanpost on this. I just thought this would be a cool spin on it.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

I was in my basement watching online in New York.

But I’ll be at Shea when they play the Mets on the 22nd!

I was in the 9th row on the home plate side of the Astros dugout

And I yelled at Lee when he questioned strike two before the double. “It’s not the umpire, Derrek. Swing the bat!”

I have to be a negative Nelly,

but this has GOT to suck for the Astros. Not only is there a hurricane that wrecked the state of Texas, but they played at Wrigley Field ( minus 84 miles).

It’s a great day to be a Cubs fan, and I’m sure as hell not complaining on this end, but I’d have a quibble or two with the MLB if I was born in the city of Houston.

Houston

Really didn’t have a choice in this matter. Sad, indeed, for them. Another fan made the point earlier that given Houston’s recent winning ways they could have gone in to this series with much more of a swagger, more of a ‘bring it on’ attitude.

What an unbelievable blessing it was to attend this game. I witnessed this game with my wife. It was the only game I’ve attended in person this season. What are the odds that I would be at the first Cubbie no hitter in 36 years…AND it would at Miller Park against the Astros. AMAZING!! For me, I simply cannot conjure enough superlatives to describe what it felt like to be there as Big Z threw the final strike…simply incredible…I’ll never forget it!

I just got home from celebrating

A senior at Marquette and was ecstatic last night when I heard the game was here in Milwaukee. Best 25 dollars of my life was spent tonight. Realized in the bottum of the 8th when Dero caught the ball that it was going to happen. I have never witnessed anything so amazing. If you told me last week that I would watch Carlos Zambrano thow a no hitter in person in Milwaukee against the Astros, I would have thought you were crazy. Section 220 row 15 seat 8

What a ridiculous game! I too am a Jr. at Marquette, and purposely didn’t go out to see when they’d put tickets up for sale, and I’m glad I did! What a thrill! I kept thinking of all of you at BCB when the balls kept coming to Theriot… but besides the Lineout Lee caught, there was nothing that was trouble. What a game, what a year, something to always remember!

I was in the left field bleechers

Most amazing baseball game I’ve ever been to. I kept my eye on the velocity and pitch count through most of the game but I started to think that it could happen once we got to the bottom of the 7th. (I couldn’t believe how hard/well Z was throwing.) I felt once we got that 5 run lead that the game was in hand, but as Z kept cruising I felt that maybe all of us were in store for something special. The atmosphere was absolutely electric all night long, but with each pitch in the 9th it was even more so, I screamed my lungs out with every strike/out from the 8th inning on. Simply an incredible night. I wish I could be more eloquent, but it’s difficult when I’m STILL on cloud 9.

Just got home around 11:30

but since home is Gurnee I have a shorter trip than most of the Chicago-area folks. Section 228, row 2, so a little past 3rd base, in the loge. Quite good seats.

I have to give props to the Milwaukee organization for putting on the game on apparently quite short notice, and being pretty well staffed regarding concessions, ushering, etc. It was kind of a mess leaving the general parking, but I probably could have saved some time by not following the herd and instead heading south to National Avenue. But I got to hear the whole WGN postgame on the way home.

They didn’t have any Cubs-Astros scorecards, reasonably enough, but they gave me an extra Reds-Brewers scorecard (from earlier this month) so I could keep score. “If you want a pencil it’s a dollar” – “Thanks, but I don’t need a pencil” – “then Thank You.”

Managed to say hi to Al before the game – nice to see you again Al – you must have had a great view from your section.

Leaving the Miller Park Lot

It’s always a problem, all the staff in the world won’t help the eternal traffic jam after games there. I live in Milwaukee so I attend my fair share of games there and it’s about the only thing I don’t like about Miller Park.

by peterman on Sep 14, 2008 11:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Traffic control tonight was beyond laughable

I know the game was on short notice, but my experience traveling to and parking at Miller Park tonight was by far the worst I’ve ever experienced. It blows my mind that they don’t have cops in the streets directing traffic, as if 20,000 people heading in the same direction should be stopping at red lights every 30 seconds so 2 cars can get the green going a different way.

I was pretty angry upon arrival. Oddly enough, that has passed…

For your information, the Supreme Court has roundly rejected prior restraint.

by Less is Walrond on Sep 15, 2008 1:52 AM CDT up reply actions

I actually got lucky...

We weren’t parked too far from one of the exits and once we got out of the parking lot, it only took about 30 minutes to get to open traffic. If you’re parked in a bad spot though, it can take a really long time to wait for everyone to queue up to the main traffic artery leading to the highway.

Napa, CA with a laptop!

The game was nowhere to be found on my DirectTV mlb package or on WGN. I about lost it when I couldn’t get the game. Thank God for MLB.TV. I was watching on a laptop out by the BBQ and then simply pointed to the screen to show my wife what was going on. She cleared the spot on the dinner table for the laptop and the family stayed glued to the screen well after the food was gone…I love that woman!

We were in RF section 104, row 5.

Aside from Z’s game, my favorite part was the Huuuun-Ter, Huuuuun-Ter, Huuuuun-Ter, YOU SUCK!! Chants. It really was a unique experience with the sheer number of Cubs fans just itching to show that they were there. Non-Cubs fans showed on the jumbotron were booed, the 7th inning stretch was great and I participated in at least 3 different acappella renditions of Go Cubs Go.

Awesome, just unbelievably awesome.

Took my little brother, had to teach him that you can’t talk about a no-no while it’s in progress. At least he realized he was seeing something historic. Sori’s homer landed about 2 sections over from us. Nice quick drives there and back (from/to Madison). All I gotta do now is pick up a Trib tomorrow to put with my ticket to save forever. Looking forward to drivin to Wrigley Tuesday for Demp/CC.

just a few rows behind the Astros dugout! We had a spectacular view of Big Z’s every pitch. I’m also gonna save these newspaper clippings and ticket stubs. My Grandfather was at the last Cubs no hitter as well, Milt Pappas, 36 years ago. This was something I had always wanted to see for myself and I must admit to tearing up a little bit. The whole atmosphere was ELECTRIC. Couldn’t have worked out any better for the Cubs.

My family and I were there in spirit ..

.. although in the flesh, we were scattered to the winds across the Midwest.

My four brothers, my mom and I are all die hard Cub fans, from Chicago to Columbus, Hammond and here in Cleveland, TN. When the top of the 9th started, my phone started ringing off the hook. We were all barely coherent. I am certain that the phone connection problems we all had were because Cub fans across the nation were clogging the circuits. Sure it was!

My mom, God bless her, has a heart condition and I thought she was going to die when she keyed in screaming on the phone: “THREE MORE OUTS! THREE MORE OUTS! Aren’t you watching it? It’s on WGN!!”

I had been watching Gameday dumbfounded and was too wrought up by the drama of the moment to go to the BCB game threads. I knew WGN in Chicago had it, and my mom was watching it .. But when my mom’s hysterical query sank in, I realized .. "Dang it! ESPN simply HAS to be covering this .. " I turned the boob tube on and just in time to see Z walking out of the dugout and to here the boys on WGN calling it all (thank GOD it wasn’t the talking heads on the Eternally Suckily Pompous Network) ..

My wife couldn’t take it .. she had to hide during the second out .. but when the third came, I let out my war whoop and danced in my living room with about a couple zillion other of the CUBS NATION ..and my phone didn’t stop ringing for about ten minutes as an avalanche of calls from my brothers poured in and they were as ecstatic as I. My mom said she cried on her knees in front of the TV, bless her.

What a night! Unforgettable! Excelsior!

Well, Next Year is here .. and Jack's century's gotta end some time .. GO CUBBIES!
