Miller Park Is Our Second Home Thread: Cubs vs. Astros at Milwaukee, Monday 9/15, 1:05 CT

Chicago Cubs at Houston Astros, Sep 15, 2008 1:05 PM CDT

Next Game

Chicago Cubs
@ Houston Astros

Monday, Sep 15, 2008, 1:05 PM CDT
Miller Park - Milwaukee, WI

Ted Lilly vs Brian Moehler

Partly cloudy. Winds blowing out to right field at 10-15 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 60.

Complete Coverage >

Today's gratuitous Geovany Soto picture is courtesy of BCB reader KatoRX, who took it at Wrigley Field on September 2:

Geo!

As we still bask in the afterglow of Z's masterpiece last night, let's refocus, as the players must, on the business of winning this afternoon. The weather box above gives pleasant weather conditions in Milwaukee, though a bit cool, but I suspect the roof may wind up closed even if it's sunny out.

The 7.5 game lead the Cubs have this morning is the largest division lead any Cubs team has had since the 1984 team was up 7.5 games after games of September 20, 1984, four days before they clinched that year.

Today's Starting Pitchers

vs. Hou -- vs. Cubs

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2008 - Ted Lilly 14-9 31 31 0 0 0 0 184.2 178 91 88 31 60 166 4.29 1.29

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2008 - Brian Moehler 11-6 28 23 0 0 0 0 138.1 151 67 64 18 33 76 4.16 1.33

Brian Moehler's record against the Cubs this year is far better than his record vs. other teams: 1-1, 2.12 vs. the Cubs, 10-5, but with a 4.45 ERA against everyone else. The potential good news for the Cubs -- as it appeared to be last night vs. Randy Wolf -- is that Moehler is 0-1, 8.53 in five appearances (four starts) in day games in 2008, with 7 HR allowed in 19 innings, suggesting his stuff is easier to hit with better daytime visibility.

Ted Lilly was outstanding in his last outing vs. the Cardinals, exciting all of us not only with his pitching but with his bowling over of Yadier Molina at the plate. After giving up 30 homers in his first 28 starts, Ted has allowed only two in his last three, and none vs. the Cardinals. He is 1-0 with a no-decision vs. Houston this year, the only homer allowed vs. the Astros in 2008 coming off the bat of Carlos Lee on July 18 in Houston.

Today's game is on CSN -- some schedules say CSN+, but this link says it's on the main channel. It's also on FSN Houston, and should be on EI. For those with HD -- as was the case last night, this game will probably NOT be in HD. Also see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

This is what we do at work all the time.

Like I tell one of the guys we have a barking dog complaint and the complainant is expecting lights and sirens to this call because they can’t get to sleep at 8pm on a Saturday night. That particular cop then says “What has two thumbs and doesn’t give a crap? Me officer insert-name-here”.

They do go, of course, but it’s a great stress reliever.

There's a live discussion going on right now on the ESPN MLB page...

about how the Astros were treated unfairly by moving two games to Milwaukee. It’s funny to read the comments of some Astros fans. They think Selig just wanted to showcase his hometown ballpark and that the games should have been played in Arlington. Apparently they forgot that the Rangers play there tonight!

And Skip Bayless called for an asterisk to be placed in the records book next to Zambrano’s no hitter. Perhaps the asterisk should be placed in Bayless’ forehead. Can the Astros please accept the consequences of their choice not to move the games out of Houston until the last moment?

by Fraggin Judge on Sep 15, 2008 12:39 PM CDT reply actions

Geez?

I think throwing a no hitter is a little harder than a team arriving late and having to play under rough cirmcumstances, if this was the case, no hitters would be thrown after a long extra inning game on get away day, after the bullpen blows the game the day before, on and on and on what a jackass!

Dear Astros: Would you like cheese with your whine?

You discussed this a bit in my fanpost, but except for a couple of Astros (like Tejada), a lot of the Astros personnel and fans have been whiny about this whole issue…especially Oswalt. In my own opinion, I think they need to man up and play baseball. They swept us in Wrigley Field, and didn’t seem to mind playing in Chicago. What’s up with this cry-baby attitude?

It was the Astros' fault.

Had they decided to evacuate themselves and their families on Thursday night, they would have had their choice of Arlington (greatest chance of more ‘Stros fans than Cubs fans though rain predicted for Sunday), Atlanta (closest to their next destination in Miami), DC (very neutral though probably more Cubs fans than ’Stros fans), Cincinnati (good baseball town that hasn’t seen much good baseball recently), or LA (neutral and good weather, long plane flights). They would also have been able to play immediately without disrupting their rhythm, and would have known that their families were safe.

Instead, they were left with no choice since they had already postponed the first two games — they had to have a dome. Miller Park also puts more money in D-Mac’s pocket.

As for the asterisk, Z accomplished the feet in a certified major league park against a team that put their best lineup on the field. What more did he need to do??

OK, I understand that DeRo doesn't hit Moehler, and could probably use a day off.

I understand that Dome hasn’t been hitting at all, and might belong on the bench for a while.

But…

Micah Hoffpauir in RF with T.R. “Fly ball king” Lilly on the mound??

Methinks Lou needs a day off too…

if we could wrap up a division title friday

z will be back on the mound (the atmosphere will be electric!)….he deserves to be the winning pitcher when we clinch the division

we will be facing the hated cardinals

and most importantly, i’ll be there…..all in favor?

The Brewers

According to Baseball Prospectus’ post-season odds report, the Brewers chances of making the post-season fell below 50% for the first time after yesterday to 48.7. The Phillies went up to 59.3. The Brewers still have the best chance of being the wild card though, but now it’s a four-way split between the Mets, Phillies, Brewers and Astros.

Our chance of making the postseason is an estimated 99.9%.

Yep, coolstandings.com has the same number.

It has the Brewers at 40.4% chance of making the postseason.
