He went on and on for about 10 minutes speculating as to why they would do it. After a while, Pat stopped him and said “Ron, I think those are oranges”. A dead silence followed by “Oh, I see.”. It’s difficult to believe general manager Doug Melvin, who is not a reactionary or knee-jerk person, made the decision to fire manager Ned Yost with 12 games to go and the Brewers tied for the NL wild card lead.
This had to come from the top, from owner Mark Attanasio, for Yost to be fired. With the team collapsing at the end for the second consecutive season, losing 11 of 14 games in September, obviously a “now or never” decision was made for the club.
CC Sabathia and Ben Sheets are going to be lost to free agency after the season, and the Brewers gave up top prospect Matt LaPorta to get Sabathia. So, the team might take a step back for a year or so after this.
Thus, win now or maybe never get this close again. That’s why I think it came from the top. I can’t imagine Doug Melvin firing his manager with 12 games to go.

The more I thought about the whole CC thing, and how he WON'T be back...
… the more it started to make sense in a ‘What the hell? What do we have to lose?’ kind of way.

What a nice belated birthday present from the Brewers to me. It would have been nice if they had given it to me on time, yesterday, but I’ll take it.
