I don't think there's that much politics in it.
If we clinch everything – playoffs, home field, etc. – then we can rest up some starters, but we do not want pitchers to get off-days, we need them to be set in their rotation. This means we allow guys like Z or Demp to still throw – but it’s only 4 or 5 innings.
Evey Hammond: Vi Veri Veniversum Vivus Vici. V: By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.
I think there is politics...
at least they let the starters throw a bit. However I think its a great idea that they let the main position players sit a bit. If they clinch before that series, the W’s don’t mean anything, and you’re going to rest guys at some point, and I think I’m with most people here… I’d much rather face the Mets than the Brewers.
Its funny, you spend most of your life gripping a baseball. And in the end, its almost always the other way around.
That's not politics. Your question was about benching our starters to help the Mets beat the Brewers.
Two points:
1 – I don’t think we can/will bench the starting rotation. That would be atypical. Shorten ’em up, yeah, but not bench. And we only have so many McGehees (gag me) to throw out there in the field.
2 – I can understanding Lou wanting to face Team X over Team Y…but that is (1) mostly out of his control and (2) requires too much of a conspiracy theory to probably work. I just can’t see Lou sitting there thinking, “Let’s have Dome hit 4 today, and let’s put Howry out there for 3 innings, hoping that the Brewers lose, the Mets win, and then we both make the playoffs, both win the first round, THEN face each other in the NLCS!” Don’t see it.
You worry about what you can worry about – your rotation, your arms, health of the team, mental preparation, and scouting your opponent in the first round.
Dan
Evey Hammond: Vi Veri Veniversum Vivus Vici. V: By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.
It has nothing to do
with worrying. It has everything to do with the fact that you’re going to rest guys at some point, so why not against the Brewers probable biggest threat. It doesn’t take any significant maneuvering. I’m not saying let Marmol play short and hit lead off. I’m saying, let Ward, Cedeno, Fontenot, Dome, Hoff play majority of the games while letting your starters get some innings, along with the ‘pen regulars. It has nothing to do with serious plotting or screwing someone. You’re going to rest guys anyhow, why not against the Mets? And I bet Lou could give a damn about answering questions about it, and he has the perfect out “We clinched, I’m resting some starters.”
Its funny, you spend most of your life gripping a baseball. And in the end, its almost always the other way around.
So it really
isn’t as complex as “the Brewers lose, the Mets win, and then we both make the playoffs, both win the first round, THEN face each other in the NLCS”. If you ask me, its more “I’m going to rest my POSITION players anyhow, why not against the team that can potentially knock out our biggest competitor.” Its really not that strategical.
Its funny, you spend most of your life gripping a baseball. And in the end, its almost always the other way around.
Gimme a minute. This is a good discussion. Gonna find some figures.
Evey Hammond: Vi Veri Veniversum Vivus Vici. V: By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.
Do that...
it is pretty interesting. I have no idea what figures will show. Its just a worthwhile discussion.
Its funny, you spend most of your life gripping a baseball. And in the end, its almost always the other way around.
I'm trying to find some significant differences
between the Phils/Brew/Mets, but I’m having a hard time. They are all three very similar. I’m gonna keep looking for a bit more.
Evey Hammond: Vi Veri Veniversum Vivus Vici. V: By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.
I don't think the numbers will show any significant difference
as you say they are very similar teams and I don’t think it will matter much who faces who. If the Cubs are on their game, they will beat anyone, LAAA included.

Holy hell, the Angels?! Com'on!
The Angels play in the worst – THE WORST – division in baseball. Their R/D is +71…which isn’t bad…but look at who’s better: 8 teams! Rays, Red Sox, Blue Jays, White Sox, Twins (the f-ing Twins!), Mets, Phils, Cubs. 13 teams have scored more runs than the Angels, and their Pyth O/U is over 10 (Cubs are under 2.6). I really am not high on the Angels, at all.
Evey Hammond: Vi Veri Veniversum Vivus Vici. V: By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.
That's what I mean
all the national baseball press has been blathering about the Angels all year and it will be sweet to see them steamrolled by anyone in the post-season, especially our team from Chitown who i don’t want to jinx by mentioning by name.

Oddly, I wasn't nervous at all during the ninth inning
After the events of the last few days, it became apparent it was just a matter of when the Cubs won the division, not if.
So if they would have lost tonight, no big deal. Because they ARE going to win the division. Better to get it over with earlier than later, but …
Believe me, it’s a good feeling to have.
