Ron Santo added to Veterans' Ballot!!

From ESPN.COM:
COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. -- Joe Torre, Ron Santo and Gil Hodges are among 10 players on the latest Hall of Fame ballot for Veterans Committee voters.

Dick Allen, Jim Kaat and Luis Tiant are on the list, made up of major leaguers whose careers began in 1943 or later. Tony Oliva, Al Oliver, Vada Pinson and Maury Wills also were among the candidates announced Tuesday.

Voting results will be announced Dec. 8 at baseball's winter meetings in Las Vegas. A player needs 75 percent to be elected -- the living 64 Hall members will vote.

Last month, a ballot of 10 players from pre-1943 was announced: Bill Dahlen, Wes Ferrell, Joe Gordon, Sherry Magee, Carl Mays, Allie Reynolds, Vern Stephens, Mickey Vernon, Bucky Walters and Deacon White.

A 12-person panel that includes Hall of Famers Bobby Doerr, Ralph Kiner and newly elected Dick Williams will vote on the older players, with nine votes needed for election.

Induction ceremonies will be held on July 26.

Managers, umpires and executives will next be considered by the Veterans Committee in 2009.

Nobody is more deserving...

I wish there were a way to lobby these members of the Vets committee. What a shame that he’s not there already.

He should be on it by default

Getting the most or nearly the most votes the past few times should qualify.

I heard they are changing the format a bit so as to allow others into the Joe Morgan official tree club membership society.

If this is the year...

electing Ron Santo to the Hall of Fame would be the perfect way to finish it.

This is the same ballot that he's been on for the last few (non-) elections

It’s criminal that Santo is not in the HOF, but I’m not holding my breath here.

Not AS criminal as the committee voting in Bowie Kuhn while leaving Marvin Miller out. It’s not like he didn’t have one of the biggest (if not the biggest) impacts on the game’s history or anything….

He just needs 9 out of 12 votes...

…should be a shoe-in. Awesome.

No, the 12-vote committee is for the pre-1943 ballot.

I think Santo has to go, again, before the entire VC, which includes (IIRC) all living HoFers.

That's what I heard

…..and that something changed as the criteria for getting in; can’t find that in my records though.

Looks like it’s all of the living members who vote, and Ron will need 75 percent of all ballots cast.

Ryno

Ryno may be a big help as he is very respected and there has been a report that Ripken is also in Santo’s corner.

I hope and pray he gets in this year.

It’s always so sad to hear him talk about it after he’s passed over yet again.

I think we all fear for his health...

… I hope he’s with us for a long, long time, but I hope he makes it before it’s too late. I hope I don’t sound cynical saying that.

I no longer believe it's going to happen

I hope I am wrong, but the veterans committee has proven to me that they are a bunch of elitists who don’t want anyone else in their club, as is proved by the fact that they haven’t elected a single person since the new format was put into play. Until someone gets elected through this process I will continue to believe that it is a waste of time.

I think the VC caught holy hell for not voting anyone in last time.

There will be tremendous pressure for them to induct at least one this time. Santo is the slam-dunk name on that list. I have to believe he gets in this time.

It's apparently a rock-and-a-hard-place situation.

They reformed the VC after the abject failure of them to uphold any reasonable standard for admission to the Hall of Fame, and now they avoid making that mistake by not electing anyone. It’s preposterous.

by cwyers on Sep 16, 2008 4:42 PM CDT up reply actions

I think your right Al...

…and this may be the best chance Santo has to get in. Believe it or not, a deep run by the Cubs would not hurt his chances either (IMO).

What did he have last time (I think about 60-65%???). I hope it happens, because it may not ever if he is passed up again.

Unfortunatley, and I hope I am wrong

I dont think hell get in until he is an angel in the infield after he dies…. I mean, he is deserving, but I dont know if it will happen. On that note… if he does get inducted I will be in Cooperstown with all my Cubs gear just as I was for Rynos induction

Ronnie and Shea

I know I am getting ahead of myself. But…

As of now, I would predict that the Mets will be the NL Wild Card team, which would mean they would face the Cubs in the 1st round. This of course would mean that the Cubs would have the chance to shut down Shea(t) Stadium. I am sure this would make Ron very happy.

It's about time...

Hopefully the Veterans Committee will get off their high horses and actually vote a deserving individual in.

This is the year

for all our hopes and dreams to come true, and Ronnie’s election to the HoF is one of mine.

by santo4hof on Sep 16, 2008 4:24 PM CDT reply actions

What's crazy...

is that the 75% threshold to get in has remained constant and nearly every HOF member says they vote for Ron every time. Someone has to be lying and I know its not healthy to harp on about perceived slights but at the forefront of that would undoubtedly have to be Joe Morgan. Though, I’ve heard that Mike Schmidt is a little more elitist about induction than Joe, if that’s even possible.

I honestly think the voters aren’t quite sure what to do about 3B. They’re the most underrepresented group and what hurts Ron is that since his retirement there have been some remarkable 3B to come through that his accomplishments are comparatively diminished. Mike Schmidt, Wade Boggs, and George Brett came after and current players like Alex Rodriguez and Chipper Jones make Ron’s base numbers look worse than they are.

Baseball-reference equates Ron to Dale Murphy who mainly did his damage in RF & CF. So you essentially have a guy, giving you OF production while playing Gold Glove level defense at 3B in the last true pitchers era the league has seen. He played the prime of his career with the higher pitchers mound and had only three seasons with an OPS+ less than 100. His rookie year, his third year, and his final year as a 34 year old.

Every Cubs fan can make arguments for Santo, and I can probably come up with some more but more than any player in any sport, Santo is probably recognized as the biggest omission from his respective HOF and that’s a shame.

by CubFan81 on Sep 16, 2008 5:59 PM CDT reply actions

To me...

…his RBI’s and Gold Gloves are what should put him over the top. He is border line, but he was the complete package on some teams where he didn’t exactly have the greatest protection in the order.

Morgan

I am not a fan of his but I honestly don’t know what reason he’d have to lie. He has come out and said he believes Santo should be in the Hall. I see no reason not to believe him. If he cared about popularity the tenor of his baseball commentary would be significantly different.

The procedure...

… will likely be under scrutiny if no one gets in after this go-around. The problem is that you have people voting who seemingly have a self interest in keeping the membership of their group as small as possible. I am all for having the HoF hard to get into. I frankly don’t care that much if Santo does or doesn’t get in. I just don’t know how the Hall of Fame can honestly believe that this process is fair when self interest in this all is so obvious.

Ronnie

I think the Cubs winning the series means more to him but how sweet it would be if he gets in right after the Cubs win it all.

I think I may get even more emotional over this than I will when we win it all.

Even my friends in Australia know about this.

This is my don’t get her started issue for me. I WANT TO LOSE IT!

Santo and Reynolds deserve to be in.

I don’t know about the rest…

Cooperstown

I’m going to see Ronnie inducted if I have to walk backwards on my hands in my underwear,

I won’t even mind if I’m on a plane with Mr. Woo Woo like I was after Ryno got in. Heck I’ll put up with a plane of Woo Woos both ways.

What a great addition to an already remarkable year if Ron finally got his name called.
We all know how deserving he is and it is a shame he isn’t already a member, but all would be forgiven if he were to get in this year.
