Cubs to open 2009 season against Colorado

From the Tribune Blogs...

NEW YORK - According to a source who has seen the Major League Baseball master schedule, the Cubs will play their 2009 home opener April 13 against Colorado.

Also, spring training is expected to last seven weeks instead of the normal six weeks because of the World Baseball Classic.

Of course, this is the home opener.  I'm not sure if it's the 'true' first game and if the season starts later because of the WBC.

That's why I suspect

It’s just the first home game, and we open the season on the road. Bu the original title of the Blog post made it kinda difficult to tell.

The season starts April 5...

… a few days later than this year. That’s a good thing, considering how bad the weather can be in April.

I'd be happy if the season started in November

I’m already sick of the offseason.

Worst part of the year for me is the part with no baseball.

Am I the only one...

…who doesn’t want this season to end? I feel like this is the season for which all other Cubs seasons will be judged.

I want the season to end

I just want it to end the way we all hope it will. But I agree it’s been an amazing season.

I hope Selig learned from this season

And not schedule any Astros home games in September.

It's up

and its confusing. It looks like the only interleague travel is to Detroit midweek in June, then Minnesota and Cleveland come to Chicago. Also, the white sox play at cubs midweek? Road trips to STL, Mil and SF to end the season? I have a headache!

Tentative 2009 Cubs schedule..

…can be found here.

Initial impressions:

-Heavy on home games in May & July, road games in June
-Potentially tough interleague schedule (White Sox, Tigers, Twins, Indians)
-Midweek series against the White Sox? WTF?
-LONG road trip down the stretch in September

In short, the ’09 schedule looks every bit as strange for the Cubs as ’08 has been.

I'm going to post the whole thing shortly.

At first glance, it looks even wackier than this year’s.

Wow.

Regular season ends on Oct. 4th. WS will be over by Christmas! Kinda stinks that the Sox series at Wrigley is in the middle of the week as well. Twins and Indians come to Wrigley too which should be kinda cool.

But who cares about next season…we’ve got a WS to win this season first!

November 5

World Series could go to November 5, according to MLB.com

by Josh Timmers on Sep 17, 2008 12:57 PM CDT up reply actions

World Series games in November at night? What a great idea!

Average low temp for Boston and New York on Nov 5: 41°
Average low temp for Chicago on Nov 5: 39°
Average low temp for Denver on Nov 5: 26°

Need I go on?

Yeah, this is gonna work out great.

Just pointing out how cold it could potentially be

Yes, WS night games are usually pretty chilly as it is, but (to state the obvious) the later the series gets pushed, the worse it gets. New York, Boston, and Chicago are just examples – you could pretty much say the same thing about any city in the Northeast or Midwest: DAMNED COLD weather to play baseball in.

That's the first time I have ever seen a Cubs/Sox series not on a weekend.

a little scary

I bet security won’t be too happy about that one. They hate the night games during this series anyway. Probably tuesday – wednesday night, and thursday day. But this also allows for mlb to schedule Minn and Cleveland for the weekend so they can get fans from other cities in.

by gp1966 on Sep 17, 2008 1:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Only 1 weekend series vs PIT

Thank god. We had 3 weekend series vs them this year.

I heart the riot. (www.riotshirts.com)

When will the geniuses at MLB learn their lesson?

In the NL, there are three teams (SF, LA, and SD) that play on the warm weather coast. There are three teams (Brewers, Snakes, and ’Stros) that play in domes.
There are three teams (Fish, Braves, Nats) in the comparatively warm south.

That is more than one-half of NL teams…

Additionally, there are five teams (Brewers, Pirates, Reds, ’Stros, and Cards) against whom the Cubs play more than one series in each city.

Why do you schedule the Rockies to make their only trip to Chicago during the second week of April??? (Remember the Mariners and Indians last year?)

I can't understand this...

Of course, that’s pretty typical though. But why have we still not visited Kauffman!?

I think they did play in KC a few years back

I was hoping they’d play there next year, though. I love Kansas City — used to live near there and go to the K (then known as Royals Stadium) quite a bit. Next year they’re supposed to be finished with the remodeling, and I would have liked to see it.

Also.....

All my life I’ve dreamed of going to Opening Day. The past 4 years, I lived 3 hours away from Houston and the Cubs never opened their season there… now the year after I move, they do.

DAMNIT!
