Why does the season start so late?

And end so late? October 4? Does MLB want a November World Series next year?

by J.Bo on Sep 17, 2008 1:16 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It's going to get one.

Why is it later? Because the alternative is starting on March 28. Also, the WBC is taking up some time next March.

How's this for a ridiculous sequence of cities?

From April 23 to May 12 — a period of 20 days — the Cubs go from Chicago to St. Louis to Phoenix to Chicago to Houston to Milwaukee to Chicago.

Get the college professors back. This computer outfit doing the schedule sucks.

you know

that doesn’t really bother me. They’re not even in our league, much less our division. It’s a manufactured rivalry, and anything that minimizes it is good, to me. I’d be perfectly happy to NEVER play the WhiteSox.

But I have another question: My son is moving in with me, and his mother is giving me all he clothes. Is it wrong that I’ve hidden the white-sox hat and jersey that she included?

3 straight years of October Cubs baseball

Thanks to this schedule :)

When was the last time that ever happened?

Before the postseason was expanded, the regular season frequently ended in early October

so it’s happened quite a bit.

Its selfish of me, but...

I’m pumped to get a 4 game series in San Francisco for the 2nd year in a row. Add in the fact that it will be close enough to my birthday that I can rationalize going to every game @ AT&T to my girlfriend and it will hopefully be in the middle of a pennant race and I’m already looking forward to the end of next year.

I would like to see a list

Of all of the teams that have not played in a certain park since interleague play started. IIRC, the Cubs have played everywhere except where I would like to see them play the most: Fenway.

And yes, I understand that my wish is a possibility before next year’s interleague play.

by gocubsgo22 on Sep 17, 2008 1:43 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They should have played this year

There’s no excuse for them not putting The Cubs against Yankees or Red Sox this year. Unless someone in MLB decided they might have a chance of playing the World Series there and that’s why….

by ak123 on Sep 17, 2008 1:50 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Its about the tickets sold

Fenway, Yankee Stadium… they’re going to sell our regardless. But you put the Cubs in Tropicana or Skydome and the attraction of the Cubs, their traveling fans, etc will result in more tickets sold than your average interleague series.

Understand

And agree but at some point it has to happen. Every AL team has played at Wrigley (many more than once) and the Cubs have played every AL team on the road (many more than once), except Red Sox.

Hopefully that will be remedied in a few weeks, but they have never played at Wrigley.

by Josh77 on Sep 17, 2008 3:24 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Which is exactly why interleague play should be done away with...

….it takes the simple math out of the scheduling and makes it an economically weighted issue. When you think about how many races come down to 2 games or less and then you look at how unbalanced these schedules can be it’s absurd. You might as well have a BCS in MLB.

Cleveland, Detroit, Minnesota...

Plus, I was hoping we’d play at Kansas City and I could make the short drive.

Except for Labor Day

9/7 is Labor Day, so that’s kind of a weekend.

I agree it’s strange. They’re only in Pittsburgh twice and in Cincinnati twice. Seems like they’d been in one of those two places every other week the past couple of years.

Two trips to San Diego?

I guess that’s a plus in terms of playing a potentially weaker team, but that’s a lot of travel.

When is the last time the Cubs had to make two trips to one West Coast city during the regular season?

Since they went to 6 divisions in eaqch league....

I retract that…since Florida and Colorado joined the NL…that year the NL went to balanced scheduling….pre that year (1993???)….AL played balanced scheddule … NL…18 games VS. teams in dic=vision (3 seriees at home…3 on road) 12 VS. other division ( 2 on road 2 at home)…hence Cubs used to make 2 wwest coast swings every year…….If I remember right….used to usually hit all 3 at once….i.e. 3 is LA, 3 in SD, then 3 in SF……..all on same trip……

The best defense is a good offense

MLB is saying this is the earliest the schedule has ever been completed

Even if MLB wanted to create the schedule this early, they should’ve waited to release it until mid-winter. Release it then, and it creates a “buzz” about baseball for a few days at a time when nobody is thinking about it; release it now, and it gets drowned out by the excitement of the playoff races. The NFL has done this to great effect by releasing their schedule in the spring every year. Bud Selig and his friends in the commissioner’s office need to go back and review Media Relations 101.

Release

I was under the impression that it was up to the individual teams when they were going to release the schedule. In years past we pieced the Cubs schedule by going off of other team’s website. The Cubs historically were late releasing their complete home schedule.

Two Trips to San Diego?

I realize that the schedule makers are on drugs when they draw up these schedules.
But two trips to San Diego? Unless I am wrong, I do not think that any team has made more than one trip to another city outside their own division. Also — I do not think that any team has played a team outside of their division more than four games per park per season. They usually try to do 3 and 3 but you might see 2 and 4 or even 3 and 4 but never 6 in one park. In fact, the 4 home and 4 away with the Dodgers is also a first time thing.
The schedule with the East is pretty well balanced. The West is totally out of wack. If they kept it balanced with the West, then they could balance the number of games with the Central. The Cubs play fewer games against St. Louis, Cincinnatti, and Pittsburgh.
In past years, it seems MLB tried to balance the schedule so the road trips made some sense. But that idea seems to have gone out the window as well.

Hopefully, the gutless Edgar Renteria will still be with the Tigers, and the Cubs can finally retaliate for the cheap shot elbow to Fontenot’s face last year in Atlanta.

I’d love to see Samardjiza or Wood bury a fast ball in his earhole. We have long memories, and there are consequences.

Brewers Home Opener

This one really surprises me. While the Brewers have sold 3 million tix this year if they continue to spiral, miss the playoffs and lose Sheets and Sabathia, their tickets sales is going to regress significantly. It seems to me that this was a waste of a Cubs at Miller Park series, which is going to be a sell-out regardless. The home opener weekend is going to be a sell-out (or near sell-out) for the Brewers regardless of who they play. I realize that there are a lot of complexities to this all but this just seems to be a waste.

Other notes…
- Two trips to Houston in the first 30 days of the season with all three trips there before the All-star break?
- Five trips to the NL West? What happened to the traditional West Coast trip? Instead they are only playing one western swing that involves more than one NL West city.

I think they should do well (at least initially) even if they lose some of their stars

The bounce from a winning season (and especially a playoff appearance) shows up pretty strong in the following year. Even without Sheets/CC, they will still have Gallardo, and they will still be playing in the National League

no playoffs...

… and no bounce for the Brewers attendance. There will be nothing but disappointment with their fanbase and if Sheets and Sabathia are gone, be sure that the fans will show their discontent by not going to the ballpark.

Used to be 2 California swings...

Be careful about talking tradition…..

As for Houston….any games in Aug. Sept. there? How about Florida…any games there Aug. Sept.?

They apparently don’t enjoy winning at professional sports anymore.

They didn't want Cecil to read those comments....

….and beat up Sheets before the game tonight. You know he has a short temper.

Actually I heard it was Cubs fans calling him “Francis” that sent him over the edge.

It's interleague people...

…it destroys the symmetry/balance to the schedule. It might be an interesting exercise to sit down in the offseason and write a schedule with the same interleague matchups that MLB has chosen. But with those series in there it complicates the schedule and ensures that someone will get screwed.

Houston

Now that I’m trapped in Houston (though the power came on just in time to see Sori’s homer last night) for a couple years, I was disappointed to see all the games down here come in the first half. It’ll be cool to have them for opening day though. I’ve never been to one of those. But most important, they’ll be done with the Astros BEFORE hurricane season starts!

Looking forward to the 3 games in Detroit.

Us Cubs fans in Michigan will be there in full force. Hey Tigers! When do single game tickets go on sale?

Actually, if there are Cubs fans who have not seen the new “Tiger” stadium, the really did do a nice job when they built “Coma” (Comerica Park). It would be worth the drive to catch a game.

And stop by and check out the Lansing Lugnuts on your way. Minor leage baseball is fun and inexpensive. I recommend “Thursty Thursdays” when beer, pop and dogs are all $2.

Yes, I said beer (Labatts) for $2.

Assuming the Cubs last game in Detroit on the 25th is a day game, you’ll have plenty of time to catch the 7:05 Lugnuts “TT” game that evening (if the Lugs are in town…). Perhaps they will be playing the Peoria Chiefs that week. Who knows?

How close do you get to the action? Check out my avatar…yep, that’s Ryno.

Just like this year..

We go to St. Louis 3 times, but they only come to Chicago twice. Why such a home field advantage two years running?
