All the Way--Eddie Vedder Cubs Song

WXRT played this song just a minute ago. From a live performance in Chicago in August. The inspiration, as Tom Marker the DJ told it, was that Vedder was in Mesa this spring and was introduced to Ernie Banks, who only knew he was a musician by way of introduction. "Write me a song", Ernie said jokingly. Eddie was inspired, said that looking in Ernie's eyes were like "looking in the eyes of Wrigley Field", and wrote this song in his hotel room that night.

It's like an old Irish pub song, with a sing a long chorus, just Eddie and his guitar. I thought the DJ said the song wasn't available commercially, but I'm sure XRT will play it a lot (streaming at 93xrt.com). I found the lyrics on some guy's blog (which one I can't remember, so let's just credit the lyrics to Eddie Vedder):

"All The Way"

Yeah, don't let them say that it's just a game.
Well, I've seen other teams and it is never the same.
When you go to Chicago, you're blessed and you're healed, The first time you walk into Wrigley Field.
Heroes with pinstripes and heroes in blue, Give us the chance to feel like heroes do.
Whether we'll win and if we should lose, we know Someday we'll go all the way.
Yeah, someday we'll go all the way.

We are one with the Cubs, with the Cubs we're in love.
Hold our heads tall as the underdogs.
We are not fairweather, but farweather fans.
Like brothers in arms, in the streets and the stands.
There's magic in the Ivy and the old score board.
The same one I stared at as a kid keeping score.
In a world full of greed, we could never want more.
Someday we'll go all the way.
Yeah, someday we'll go all the way.

Here's to the men and the legends we've known.
Giving us faith and giving us hope.
United we stand and united we'll fall
Down to our knees the day we win it all.
Yeah Ernie Banks said, "oh, let's play two".
I think he meant two hundred years.
Playing at Wrigley, our diamond, our jewel.
The home of our joy and our fears.
Keeping traditions, and wishes anew,
The place where our grandfathers' fathers they grew.
The spiritual feeling if I ever knew.
And when the day comes for that last winning run, and I'm crying and covered with beer.
I look to the sky and know I was right today.
Someday we'll go all the way.
Yeah, someday we'll go all the way.

"We're not fairweather, but farweather fans."

Awesome.

When it happens, he’s gotta play it at the ring ceremony.

Actually

The phrase is “foul weather” not farweather.

Who needs a stinkin' tag line? What are they for anyway?

Makes sense.

I thought “farweather” implied we’ve gone far with the team.

I just heard it again on XRT...

The XRT version is edited or maybe redone....

…the crowd sings the chorus from the outset, he doesn’t forget the lyrics, and there is generally less crowd noise.

Oh...

….the song you linked is from an April show, so he had just written it.

The XRT song is from last month and the DJ mentioned that Vedder coached the audience before they recorded it.

I was at the concert where they recorded it

It was the Thursday night concert at Auditorium Theater at Roosevelt University.

He spent about 5 to 10 minutes telling the story and then joked that he wanted to get a good recording on a song with a sing-along that no one had ever heard before.

Nothin'. A handful of nothin'. You stupid mullet head. He beat you with nothin'. Just like today when he kept comin' back at me......with nothin'.

the version on the radio was recorded in August at Auditorium Theater. I can post the playlist if you’d like. I was there. He told us he was recording it. He told the Ernie Banks story. I’ve never been to the Vic in my entire life.

Yeah, I've always had mixed feelings about Vedder/Pearl Jam.

His/their arch attempts at earnestness often seem forced and overwrought. They’ve always wanted people to look at them like some perfect matrimony of early U2, the Ramones and Crazy Horse, but they’re really a fairly pedestrian hard rock band with, admittedly, a few decent songs.

Having said all that, I do kinda like this song. But, obviously, I have a soft spot for just about anything Cubs.

Good thing they're just musicians.

And every band has influences and naturally has characteristics of those influences in their sound/writing.

Can't quite find where I said they weren't musicians.

I just don’t think they’ve ever risen to the level of any of those three bands – at least not consistently.

Eddie has been reluctant to release it and made only 100 copies to be distributed to radio stations.

He did this in January, 2007 at Hundley’s Fantasy Camp banquet. Here are some pictures of him doing it:

EDDIE VEDDER’S SONG FOR THE CHICAGO CUBS AVAILABLE SOON
09.18.08
At the request of Ernie Banks, Eddie threw together a song for the Cubs (“All the Way”). He got a pretty good live version of it at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago this August. It’s now being played on Chicago radio and at the Bleacher Bars around Wrigleyville. We have decided to make the song available for download – you can get it here in the next few days. There’s a chance we’ll also make available some hard copy CDs and we’re looking into souvenir 45 singles, as well. Check back here for the latest.
Go, Cubs, go!

I wish it were winter so we could freeze it into ice blocks and skate on it and melt it in the spring time and drink it!

Depressing?

He describes:
1. The feeling of being at Wrigley field
2. How being a Cub fan is often passed down from generation to generation in one’s family
3. The unity you feel with other Cub fan’s through thick and thin
4. The confidence of knowing one day we WILL win this thing
5. What happens on that day we finally do.

Melancholy, in parts, sure. But like an old Irish drinking song, it’s about brotherhood, pride, and hope.
