You can't take a fastball down the middle just because it occurs on the first pitch.
It might be the best pitch he sees in that AB.
In the second inning, he took a first pitch fastball down the middle, got behind in the count, and strcuk out on a slider out of the strike zone.
In the seventh, he swung at a first pitch fastball down the middle, and hit a solid line drive that happened to be caught by the CF.

Silver Lining . . .
I think having a week of “blow off” games does more harm than good to a team’s playoff performance . . . I think that’s why Wild Card teams typically do well. Because they’re usually the team that’s fighting to make the playoffs right to the end . . . So we all need to relax . . . The Cubs are NOT going to blow a 9 game lead. Assuming we lose, that just means one more day of playing pennant chase baseball. Not a bad thing . . .
Great point....I believe the Rockies made the Series last year while playing games that mattered....
just as a fan I would sure love less drama….which really with the lead we have there isn’t any big drama……so breath everyone

Monday at Shea
As a Cubs fan living in NJ, part of me wants the Cubs to wait until Monday to clinch so i can see it in person against the Mets. But the logical side of me remembers that going into game 5 of the 2003 NLCS, I said, it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world if the Cubs lost game 5 so that they could clinch in Chicago. Big mistake.
Precisely.
How can ya be? The Cubs have played a sloppy game. But it’s not over and there’s another one tomorrow, so…

errors happen
and it isn’t super surprising that our bullpen would be wearing down in September – most teams probably dealing with that. Of greater interest is the offensive inconsistency mentioned by another poster earlier. Their mediocre pen has shut the Cubs offense down for two days now, and there is a pretty direct correlation between the fact that we’ve swung at every single pitch the past two games and the lack of runs or quality at bats.
I agree with that
And I’m not happy with the approach at the plate, either.

If walking two and giving up three hits in less than an inning

That true?
I can’t see the game, but on Gamecast, it looked like he pitched behind everybody, walked a couple, and gave up a couple of two-out hits. Were some of those playable?
If Derosa makes the play you wouldn't be saying that.
He got a ground out. Walked a guy. Then got another ground out which would have been the inning ender. He got flustered and the wheels fell off.
