Harden vs. Bush Thread: Cubs vs. Brewers, Thursday 9/18, 1:20 CT
Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago Cubs, Sep 18, 2008 1:20 PM CDT
Harden vs. Bush. Oh, the jokes that could be made.
But there are more important things to be done this afternoon, like winning a ballgame and reducing the magic number to 2.
It was pointed out by several of you that yesterday's Gratuitous Geo Photo was of him in street clothes, and up to yesterday all the pics were of him in uniform. To get back on track, BCB reader CubCat sent this photo, taken on July 9:
| Today's Starting Pitchers | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Reminder, the above numbers are Harden's with the Cubs only. See the pitcher box for his full season numbers.
This is a rematch of the game in Milwaukee on July 31, won by the Cubs 11-4, and it wasn't that close (the Brewers scored three runs off Scott Eyre -- remember him? -- in the 9th inning). Harden gave up six hits; the only run was a solo HR by Prince Fielder. Bush allowed five hits and a walk, but six earned runs mainly due to three homers (two by Jim Edmonds, one by Alfonso Soriano). The Cubs also beat Bush at Wrigley Field on April 3; Aramis Ramirez homered off him that day, and lifetime Bush is 1-7, 5.16 vs. the Cubs.
Sounds good to me. Let's go Cubs!Today's game is on cable in Chicago and Milwaukee, on EI, and at the MLB.com Mediacenter.

as long as sox aren't playing at same time
…they will cut in with Post Game Live…possibly from the ballpark.
1998
In 1998 they had the ESPN feed on WGN and went to the postgame.
I expect WGN will break into whatever is on when it happens. Comcast Sportsnet too.
I still have the 1984 clincher on tape and my mom got as many station breakins as she could as I was with my Dad and brothers in Pittsburgh and I’ll never forget the emotion in Tim Weigel’s voice.
ANd similarly in 1995 when Ohio State lost so Northwestern was Big 10 Champs and Rose Bowl bound it was right before the sportsbreak and the honest emotion in Dave Eanet’s voice who had done the games for a million years.

read what an evil BCB guy writes in “An Ode To The Cub Fans” on BrewCrewBall here.
I think they have a psychological problem, those guys. Concentrate on your team (Brewers) winning, don’t start with your inferiority complexes telling us that the “Cub fans are hiding Bin Laden style” or that we’re natural born losers.

But the spelling Nazi within me has to laugh at his reference to something being the “pisto resistance”. Should’ve been “pièce de résistance”…I’d have let him alone even if he’d gotten it without the accents…
I'm usually against the Grammar Police except for two circumstances:
a) the misspelling, or improper wording, implies something other than what was intended
b) what you did above

Think he should stop breaking the Prozac's in half
I mean come on. He lives in or around an oppressed small town with MLB’s smallest TV market. His team has to go up against a big market club, from a city arguably the best in the entire country. His team plays in one of those modern parks where baseball is only part of the entertainment instead of the main focus. He’s watched his team utterly blow a big division lead in 2007 and now may be seeing the same thing for the 2008 WC. His ball park is over run by Cubs fans (even when the Brewers are home). The first no-no pitched at his nice new ball park was by a CUB. The first time ever back to back no hitter and one hitter were pitched by CUBS in his teams’ ball park. CUB fans are known to be the most loyal in all of sports and finally, the CUBS arguably have the most fans of any pro team OUTSIDE their geographic area.
With all that, I’m surprised he’s not on a suicide watch.

According to Superstition rules
The uniformed Geo Photos will no longer be effective.
The mojo created by their posting in connection with the win streak has been broken. So posting this phot will result in negative energy!
Well, we were operating on the theory that...
…posting a pic of Geo out of uniform is what broke the spell (and the streak). You may have a point, though. I guess we’ll find out.
"I see the playoff schedule posted in the paper, and that stuff makes me nervous because you can't take anything for granted. We have a great team. We have a really good team. We're playing well, but we haven't won yet." - Jim Edmonds, 8/31/08
The out of uniform photo
Did break the streak and it ends the mojo of the in uniform pic.
So bringing back the in uniform pic likely does not bring with it the positive mojo again.
Street clothes Geo
I thought one of the first Geo pictures was the snazzy side view with the straw hat shot – definitely out of uniform.
Ms actually
that’s why I remember the photo so well.
Apology accepted...
we don’t have to be completely pc here. And don’t you ma’am me. As long as there’s a picture of Geo, it’s all good.
I didn't think there'd be any math involved...
If the picture is deemed negative, wouldn’t another photo be a double of the negative so its a positive?
Uh oh.
Now I’m a little worried. (What can I say? I have a mean superstitious streak that I labor daily to keep under control.) Well, like I said, I guess we’ll find out soon enough.
"I see the playoff schedule posted in the paper, and that stuff makes me nervous because you can't take anything for granted. We have a great team. We have a really good team. We're playing well, but we haven't won yet." - Jim Edmonds, 8/31/08

So our real magic number is 5
Though it seems like both HFA and the division are just formalities at this point. (Damn it feels cool to say that)
Your 2008 Missouri Tigers! #5 3-0 (0-0). Next up Saturday home vs. Buffalo. Chase Daniel and Jeremy Maclin for Co-Heisman!
Depending on how you want to look at it...
The # is still 4 to clinch the division, and a playoff spot – and that’s traditionally when the team would ‘celebrate’ for a season of accomplishment. But with our home record, it’s a good thing to actually be “the best in the National League”. It’s just that the numbers are so close, there’s not much of an issue, I really posted this more to show the team at the bottom of the list, that can be dealt with this afternoon while (hopefully) knocking the Crew back another notch.

Cecil chant i.e. Larry chant for Chipper
Do you think it would get a reaction? Most ball players would let it go, with Prince it could be different, all of Wrigley chanting Cecil when he is at the plate would be fun to see and hear.
Forgive me if this has been discussed in previous posts or threads.
I think the Cecil thing is funny bc of how Prince has tried and ignore Cecil for years

According to Brewers fans, all it accomplished was inspiring Prince to slam the baseball all over the ballpark, which he managed to do again last night. I’m not convinced there was cause-and-effect involved, but I would like to see the Cubs pitching around Veggie Boy with RISP.

I think Pujols wins it for the NL…but the AL is too wide open. I’d like to say Milton or Josh from the Rangers, but they might split votes. I could make an argument for Morneau.

These debates are what makes baseball fun.
I’d agree Manny has been extremely valuable to the Dodgers, helping them reach the playoffs, but I don’t know he’s been the MVP of the National League. I’d tend to give it to someone who has been the league the entire year.

He and Ethier have hit essentially the same since Manny joined...
…and Ethier has also been there the rest of the season. Why not Ethier?
Oh, to answer my own question:
Because Albert Pujols is the most valuable player in the National League.
Not arguing that.
Just sayin’ that Manny deserves consideration. And Ethier’s production has not been quite to Manny’s level, although he has been good…Just judgin by a quick look at the respective monthly splits and OPS+
"Chase Daniel has more touchdowns (seven) than incompletions (six) the past two weeks. Which is just silly." Pat Forde, ESPN
by PurpleLineToWrigley on Sep 18, 2008 1:05 PM CDT up reply actions
Because I happen to have that data in a spreadsheet...
…I’ll answer this. Since joining the Dodgers, Manny has a 1.226
OPS. During that time period, Ethier has an 1.149 OPS. That’s virtually a dead heat – OPS is going to overrate Manny’s lead in home runs relative to Ethier’s lead in doubles and triples, and Manny has more strikeouts and GIDPs that aren’t being accounted for.
But let’s say that Manny has hit slighly better than Ethier in that timespan. Is the difference enough to offset Ethier’s production for the Dodgers during the time that Manny was in Boston? (Keeping in mind that the Dodgers filled that time mostly with Juan Pierre and Andruw Jones.)
So Manny should not be considered for the MVP?

Evey Hammond: Vi Veri Veniversum Vivus Vici. V: By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.
I love Manny but...
I would give it to Pujols in a cakewalk. Even Manny said he’d give it to Pujols — that he voted for him himself! There’s no denying what Manny’s done for the Dodgers, but he actually isn’t completely the one-man show the media paints it as. As noted above Ethier has also been on fire for 2 months and they’re pitching (yesterday notwithstanding) has been key, too. The Cards won’t make the playoffs but without Pujols they’re at the bottom of the division and his numbers are amazing.
As a fan of both the Cubs and the Dodgers (sorry, family and geography, don’t shoot me) I follow them both and think Manny’s been amazing but for 2 months vs a hole season it’s gotta be Pujols.
WAY TO SET YOURSELF UP FOR THAT ONE, COLIN!!!
That’s two of us that agree with the Pujols vote.

I think on XM radio yesterday they said that K-Rod has never even entered a game in a situation other than..
9th inning, Angels ahead. That team has more of those situations than probably anyone in the ML this year. I’m not seeing what his talent is, not that I could do it, but I think a lot of closers in his situation would have had the same results this year. I think Pedroia has has more of an incremental impact on his team than anyone else you could submit, except maybe for our own Geo. He has maximized our pitching staff in addition to having great offensive numbers. He needs to at least get some votes on the NL side of things.

I think it goes...
1 – Pujols
2 – Chipper
3 – Lance
And in the AL, I don’t know what you’re talking about. Morneau is almost exactly on the line of his 2006 MVP line of .321/34/130/.375/.559 with stats this year of .311/23/128/.383/.521. His homers are down, but his on-base percentage is up, and he will finish with more RBIs, a stat the idiot voters love. And he’s on a playoff contender.
There are a lot of guys in the AL that are jumbled up at the top of offensive categories – A-Rod, Aubrey Huff, Carlos Quentin, Kevin Youklis, Josh Hamilton, Miguel Cabrera. But out of that group – only Morneau and Youk are on playoff teams. Quentin will get votes, but he won’t win because he’s out for the season. And I will throw up in my mouth if Youklis wins it.

My personal prediction...
First-place votes are probably gonna get split lots of ways – Youk, Pedroia, K-Rod, Morneau, etc. That makes the second- and third-place votes VERY important, and Josh Hamilton is a prototypical “second-place vote” guy – a statistically superior player for a non-contender. I think Hamilton will end up AL MVP by a nose.

Yes Marquis gave up three quick (Cameron just FEASTS off him) ones, but to me the energy in the park was low – and the players just could not get anything done with two outs – which seemed to be the only chances to score regardless. Even against Gagne, for Pete’s sake!
I am hoping Rothschild is helping with finding a way to successfully pitch against Fielder. Its been the “Prince” show at Wrigley, this time.
We also wondered out loud last night – who would win a footrace between Soto and Fielder?
Soto would own him easily.

In 6 PAs, Dome is 2 for 4 against Bush with two doubles, two walks and one strikeout.

I haven't been around the last few days to make my fearless predictions,
but it would appear that we need a change of mojo, so I’m back to predicting:
1. DeRo will have at least one XBH.
2. Harden will pitch 6 efficient innings, strike out 6, and give up 1 ER (solo HR).
3. Dome will reach base at least once.
4. A Cubs OF will make a great catch.
5. A Steve Goodman song will be sung at Wrigley after the game.
