Well, that's useful information
Jeff Spellcheck is helping Lou make his postseason roster decisions.
Thanks, Jeff! Way to pick up Harden, who was having, for him, a bad day. Good to know you have some of that old Notre Dame choking spirit in you!
So, who gets to be on the postseason roster?
Zambrano; Lilly; Dempster; Harden (4)
Wood; Marmol; Howry; Gaudin; Marquis; Marshall; Hart; Guzman (8)
Soriano; Edmonds; Dome; Johnson; Pie (5)
Lee; DeRosa; Theriot; Ramirez; Fontenot; Ward (6)
Soto; Blanco (2)
Bleep Spellcheck

The problem...
…here is everyone gets all excited when a rookie (like Jeff S) comes up and has some success early on. Everyone over reacts and thinks all will be peachy whenever he pitches.
I have said all along, Jeff S. has good stuff, but he is rough around the edges and it will take time to smooth out those rough edges. Lou knows this better than anyone, and this is exactly why he has been trying to find a way for someone with experience (Howry) to find his game.

Im afraid that Howry is gonna become the answer
Spellcheck actually did the job today, DeRo messed up. Lou has hinted the past couple games that he is liking what he is seeing from Howry. That scares the crap outta me. Gaudin’s return would be huge.

Howry's presence
He might not pitch but his presence with the team could help. He’s a veteran who has pitched in post season before.

Maybe someone like Brian Roberts will be available?

Never deal with Peter Angelos
(and whichever puppet he has installed as his GM du jour) unless you are prepared to pay $1.50 on the dollar.

You're putting Hart on...
…and Samardzija off?
I can see Guzman, but really, you’re leaving Samardzija off?
You’re better than that, DaBard.

Hart has no shot whatsoever.
Wuertz is a better gamble and that’s not worth the risk.

The Shark will be on the post season roster.
Hart can’t be on the roster, he didn’t come up before 8/31 – 09/01. Unless he replaces Liebs, but I think that spot will go to Felix the cat.

Doesn't matter if you were up before 9/1.
If you were on the 40-man roster on 8/31, you can replace anyone who was on the DL that day. The Cubs had four on the DL on 8/31: Rich Hill, Chad Fox, Jon Lieber and … someone else I can’t remember right now. So they have up to four spots to play with. Hart could be designated one of those slots.

Actually...
Hart was with the big club earlier this season. He got sent down after about a month.
Before each game, please remember to feed the bats.

You have to have a back-up SS.
The post season roster will probably go something like this.
Zambrano
Dempster
Lilly
Harden
Gaudin/Howry- (depending on Gaudin’s back)
Cotts
Marquis
Marshall
Shark
Marmol
Woody
Soriano
Edmonds
’Dome
Johnson
Pie
Lee
DeRo
Theriot
Ramirez
Fonty
Ward
Cedeno
Soto
Blanco

this.
Gives you lots of pop AND speed off the bench, good D in the outfield, good pitching, and our secret weapon: Henry Blanco.

I'd leave Ward off
I don’t think he helps in the pinch hit spots. We have guys who are hitting better in Fontenot and Cedeno. Even Hoff I think would be a better choice. Last year Ward did excellent in his role, up until a few days ago I forgot he was even on the team.

Hoff? No way. Fontenot can not deliver pinch hits like Ward.
Neither can RC. Ward is a born hitter. I trust him in the post season way more than Fontenot or Cedeno, least of all Hoff.

Add to that the walk that Ward drew today
to spark our 12th inning rally.

There is no way in hell kevin hart makes the postseason roster, he is horrid

Absolutely!
+1
Not so sure both Marshall and Marquis make it, but maybe Lou likes the idea of 2 long relievers, one lefty and one righty. And I trust Howry more than Marquis. It’s a shame Lieber wasn’t more effective

How can DeRo be blamed for the five runs?
I understand he didn’t have a tremendous day at second, that being said, he’s been generally consistent on the field all year. Samardzija blew today, end of story. Yes, DeRosa muffed up the play at second, but Samardzija should’ve been able to bounce back from that and pitch a solid inning. He didn’t. Samardzija is NOTHING special, like most people make him out to be. He reminds me a lot of Kyle Farnsworth. Lots of praise and then just very subpar at the Major League level. I wouldn’t trust him in the postseason.
And whoever suggested Roberts over DeRosa is crazy. DeRosa has put up HUGE numbers at the plate this season, and his versatility would top anything Roberts could do on the infield. I don’t know why people are hung up on Roberts still, it’s not going to happen. DeRosa’s one of the guys who set up Soto’s homer in the ninth anyway.
I don’t think Samardzija deserves to be in the postseason but you know he’s going to be there. Naturally you hope he doesn’t fail, but he’s proven he’s not perfect and expectations for him are astronomically high. I don’t know, I’m still questioning the love some people have for this guy. I may take some heat for this post, frankly I don’t care. I’m just not diggin’ Samardzija and don’t think his mistakes should be masked by defensive mistakes by DeRosa like some are trying to do.

+ 1 on De Rosa
It’s true the runs were unearned due to De Rosa’s error (scored correctly because the ball was hit straight at De Rosa, but to tell the truth, that ball appeared to hit a pebble or something because it bounced funny). However, it was Samardzija who allowed three hits in a row to let those runners score. That wasn’t De Rosa.

Blamed is a bit strong
but his error lead to the 4 run-6th. That’s gonna happen to even the best defencive players from time to time, say that guy I often refer to as the “hoover deluxe” at 1st base.

no one is perfect.
Shark has a good off-speed pitch and at times, a dominant fastball. He’s perfect for short relief.

My guess is they won't carry 12 pitchers
especially with all the off-days and the fact the roster can shift from series to series.

I didn't know they could change the roster between post-season series.

Yes, they can.

So when you hear about someone getting "voted a share of the winners's purse"
are they talking about players who might have been on the roster for part of post-season but not all of it or players who weren’t on any post-season roster? Does anyone who was on any post-season roster automatically get a share? I’ve been following baseball for 45 years and never really understood all that.

It could be anyone.
It’s all voted on by the players.

In fact...
if the planets align just right and the phase of the moon is perfect, 10 pitchers may even happen. Remember it’ll be 4 starters and Marshall to begin, then 5 more, likely 6 more.
But that’ll take some excellent performances by several ’pen guys these last 10-11 games to make that happen; then that would give Lou a couple extra bench guys.
The other factor is if an injury occurs, a like-player substitute can be made intra-series. FWIW, I hope the Cubs do not have to use that option.
