Almost There Thread: Cubs vs. Cardinals, Friday 9/19, 1:20 CT
St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs, Sep 19, 2008 1:20 PM CDT
There's an old saying: "A picture is worth 1000 words." If that's true, here are 4000:

Adam Wainwright missed two months on the DL, came back in August, threw pretty well and then got hit hard in his last start vs. the Pirates. His only start vs. the Cubs this year was a no-decision on May 2, a game the Cubs won in 11. (Who's that guy who started for the Cubs that day? Never heard of him.) Aramis Ramirez is the Cub who likes to hit Wainwright the best (7-for-19, .368/.455/.684, 3 doubles, a HR).
You all know what Z did in his last start. The Cardinals are one of the teams he throws best against: 9-5, 2.77 in 21 lifetime appearances (20 starts), though they beat him up pretty good on August 9 at Wrigley Field, even though Z homered in that game. Albert Pujols also homered in that game (and so did three other Cardinals), but has only a .250 lifetime average vs. Z.
You asked for it, you got it! Today's Gratuitous Geo Photo:
Today's game is again on cable in Chicago and St. Louis, and at the MLB.com Mediacenter.

And today, the role of Gollum will be played by Blue Mike, who somehow, is STILL not banned from the board.

I had a Tracker
whilst in college in Iowa. I had a love/hate relationship with it.
Dangerous to drive most of the year, especially with ice/snow/wind/rain/sunshine/stalled troughs. But I could fit my entire drumset in it and it never once failed me on the road.
One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.

How can noone of brought up the important holiday today?
Happy International Talk Like a Pirate Day!!!!
Arrr, they don’t call me Long John because my head is so big.
The day we lose our will to fight - Is the day we lose our Freedom.
So a pirate walks into a bar with a ship's wheel attached to his crotch
The bartender says, “Hey, pal – you know there’s a ship’s wheel attached to your crotch?”
The pirate says, “Aye, and it’s drivin’ me nuts!”
"I owe [Dunston] a lot. Nobody would know how good I was at digging balls out of the dirt if it wasn't for him..." -Mark Grace
"If [Ruth] had [called his shot], I would have knocked him down with the next pitch." -Charlie Root
A pirate walks into a bar and the bartender says, “Hey, I haven’t seen you in a while. What happened, you look terrible!”
“What do you mean?” the pirate replies, “I’m fine.”
The bartender says, “But what about that wooden leg? You didn’t have that before.”
“Well,” says the pirate, “We were in a battle at sea and a cannon ball hit my leg but the surgeon fixed me up, and I’m fine, really.”
“Yeah,” says the bartender, “But what about that hook? Last time I saw you, you had both hands.”
“Well,” says the pirate, “We were in another battle and we boarded the enemy ship. I was in a sword fight and my hand was cut off but the surgeon fixed me up with this hook, and I feel great, really.”
“Oh,” says the bartender, “What about that eye patch? Last time you were in here you had both eyes.”
“Well,” says the pirate, “One day when we were at sea, some birds were flying over the ship. I looked up, and one of them shat in my eye.”
“So?” replied the bartender, “what happened? You couldn’t have lost an eye just from some bird shit!”
“Well,” says the pirate, “I really wasn’t used to the hook yet.”

Kid Birate
A little boy dresses up as a pirate for halloween. He has a bit of a speech impediment. The first house he goes to he says, “I’m a birate. This is my barrot. Can I have some bandy?” The woman looks at him and says, “My my aren’t you cute. But where are your buccaneers?” The boy looks are her angrily and says “On the side of my buckin head you buckin dumass.”

Just curious anyone else ever been in a public place listening to your headphones during a great moment and noticed people around you also cheering or doing other things to indicate they are also listening.
My brother was on the metra train yesterday as the winning run scored and a bunch of people started going yes yea or such and finally someone said “Are you all listening to the Cubs!”
High fives everywhere.

Well, to answer your question...
…yes, he probably would have been labeled “fine” if DeRo had made that play. Samardzija did walk Counsel just before that, but I believe Counsel is generally considered a fairly patient hitter. Beyond that, the Shark induced four groundballs in his outing – the last two just found holes. (Granted, Durham’s was pretty hard hit.)
I’d say the answer lies somewhere in between – I don’t think Samardzija was awful by any means, but his control wasn’t as sharp as it should’ve been. And I agree with Al’s point that Lou probably should have brought in Cotts to turn around Durham. Nonetheless, it was a little frustrating to see people on the game thread jump all over the Shark.

Wierd how this works
If yesterday’s game had happened to the Cubs I would have thrown up in my mouth a little bit.
But since it happened to the Brewers it makes me smile. There is a little part of me that feels bad for them right now but right now I just want the Cubs to make the playoffs.
Here is yesterday’s games highs an lows shown via a graph, enjoy:

Is that relative to crowd noise?
because I’ll tell you right now… it was a heck of a lot louder and crazier when Soto hit that HR, than it was when D-Lee won it. After Geo hit that, nobody sat down until the 1st out of the 10th inning.
By the time D-Lee won it, we were so exhausted from cheering through Geo’s HR and all the drama in extras, that we didn’t have the same amount of energy at the end.
I'm not going to even bother trying to update this sig everyday anymore... that's what the standings column on ESPN is for.

Ryan Theriot
Has anyone noticed that Ryan Theriot either double-pumps or takes a crow-hop before every throw to first base? Yesterday, Joe Dillon nearly capitalized on this by beating out a ground ball that might have led to a Brewers run in the top of the 12th inning.

That's the one case where the scrap hurts him. The crow-hop
tends to counteract the scrap and you get a kind of whirling action. Hae has to be careful not to screw himself into the ground.

if you measure the tork that is caused by the intensity of scrap displaced, it actually will drive him upward not downward, therefore instead of screwing himself into the ground, he is propelled to the stars

Per previous thread I was sitting directly in front of Al and stood up when Lee batted in the 12th and trust me I NEVER stand up DURING a play but I just felt it.. Can’t imagine anything that would get me to do it today as I think it is something you save for a VERY, VERY special occasion ( sorry I will NOT be sitting in front of Al tomorrow ).
I really , really want the Brewers to win tonight. A. I don’t want to have to go back to Wrigleyville tonight as I have other plans. B. There is ANOTHER baseball game tonight starting at 9.40 that is VERY important to me and I don’t want the interuption.

they have a local commercial that runs here in the north burbs with this gal wearing a pair of boy shorts and her ass hanging out of them. Did you guys see Dempster's interview with Big League Stew on Yahoo! yesteday?
A sampling:
Q: Remember last year when Lou put you in the rotation for about 20 minutes and then took you out? Was that the whole beginning of your re-transformation into starter?
RD: Yeah. It was amazing as a starter last year how unhittable I was.
Q: How often do you ride your bike to work?
RD: Probably two days a week. The other five, it rides me to work.

OT: Meeks plans Cubs playoff protest
I don’t think this has been discussed:
Rev. James Meeks plans to move his school funding protests to a national stage, ringing the outside of Wrigley Field with 6,000 protesters during the first Cubs playoff game. LINK
One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.
No, it's on topic.
Man, that guy has a good cause but picks the strangest ways to be heard.

+1 but he does get noticed
That's the beauty of baseball. You never know what's going to happen until the final out -- Lou
Obviously he's never been to a playoff game at Wrigley
There won’t be any room for him
Current temperature in hell: 43 degrees F - and falling!
Oh, based upon what I've seen,
he’ll make room.

well...
he might get some more TV coverage that way. But how will we tell that those particular people are there for protesting, and not the game?

What good would National TV coverage do him?
People all across the country have their own problems with their own education systems. I don’t think they care to involve themselves in Chicago’s issues.

I’d say it’d be about 20-80. Eighty being he wanted to get another Canadian. Any time you can add a Canadian to your team, you’ve strengthened it. I heard they’re trying to get Bill Murray, a big Cubs fan, to talk to Mike Myers about signing with us.
I hope he lives forever
I'd love to see him
join Pat & Ron once he retires.
