Lets get the magic number down to Augie Ojeda

I think he was number 1. Either way. GO REDSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!

Your 2008 Missouri Tigers! #5 3-0 (0-0). Next up Saturday home vs. Buffalo. Chase Daniel and Jeremy Maclin for Co-Heisman!

Yabbut...

… Augie also wore #55.

I think #1 will be Woody English, who played SS for the Cubs in two World Series (1929 and 1932).

I like Jose Cardenal, but I guess we should go with a winner like Woody English.

Life is unfair, sorry Jose. :-(

Number one can be whoever it wants to be

Two WS apperances is much more impressive than Augie.

Yeah...

I really hope the Brewers lose tonight. I’m pretty sure I’m reiterating what everyone else is thinking, but it would be superb if the Cubs could clinch at home instantaneously with a win. Plus, if they would’ve clinched today, it would’ve been hard to celebrate since my girlfriend is currently laying in a hospital bed 3 feet to my left in labor. And it’s already been a fairly lengthy process. Hopefully a future Cub pops out soon!

I don't feel sorry for the Astros' sorry butts either 'cause they're whiners....

…but the BrewCrew is trying hard, and in general aren’t whining too much (except for claiming that the “wind” in Wrigley caused their choke-job).

I feel a little twinge for the BrewCrew. So much talent, yet they’re playing like a pathetic bunch….

it's because they're not a team.

they’re simply a collection of ball players. It’s been happening to the yankees too. They don’t have good leadership, no one steps up, and their managers, well.

I kinda felt that way with the Cubs last year, too.

I think you have to find 2006

to see a Cubs team really suffering from this, but it did take about half the season for them to really pull it together last year.

And that’s why this year we have over 90 wins. It’s why we won last night’s game and the Brewers lost.

Some fans of other teams do

I know at least one Boston fan who is actively rooting for the Cubs to make it; granted they’re in the AL so it’s a little different.

That said, I think people care about other teams, even in their division. I wouldn’t mind the other teams in the Central to be competitive as long as we still beat them all the time. It’s entertaining baseball.

Cincy looks like they have a decent crowd

In Florida, you can play “spot the fan”

During a FLA HR they zoomed in on a group of 2-3 people real tight instead of the normal section or so.

I was on the wrong game and didn't realize it at the time I saw and posted that.

The Cincy crowd looks bigger than they have had in a few days. I just got DirectTV MLB extra innings and have been surfing games all evening. It’s cool to be able to get both teams feeds and switch back and forth to hear how different the announcers react to the same events on the field. I can only do that on games that don’t involve the Cubs. I was trying to estimate the FLA crowd last night and came up with 600.

Only drawback

Only drawback to clinching tomorrow would be it would be tweedle dee and tweedle dum in the booth on Fox not Len and Bob on TV. But at least we’d have Pat and Ron.

But I have Bears tickets for Sunday. Don’t have to make a decision that way!

Everybody give up and go to bed? OK, I'll put the cats out and turn on the porch light.

Good night, everyone. Dream of Cubs players from every season since 1876 gathering on the mound at Wrigley Field after the Cubs put down the AL Representative team in order in the top on the ninth, ending the game and winning the WS on the 100 year pre-determined cycle. They will fill the entire field surface with hundred of ghosts, wearing different uniforms, carrying different equipment but all with the recognizable icons representing the Chicago National League Baseball Club. They will all equally partake of the joy of finally reaching the pinnacle again after having relatively common success in the fledgling sports’ early formative years followed by years of drought calibrated to biblical proportions interspersed with occasional campaigns that would revive the moribund hopes of the faithfull fans to re-believe, to re-new their certain belief that some day, in their lifetime, they would see the ticker tape parade down Lake Michigan Blvd ending at 1060 West Addision to see the ring presentation..

Get a good night’s sleep. You’ll need your energy tomorrow to cheer the Northsiders on to their clinching win which will occur as the team from Milwaukee will continue to suffer from their September hangover. Their loss will precede our win by about 20 minutes but I think we can all agree, that in the context of a hundred year wait, to consider them simultaneous events by definition and appreciate the full value of clinching a division for the second year in a row for the first time.

And on that last day of celebration, late in October when the trees have lost their leaves and Saturday morning thoughts normally start thinking of the College Football matchups that weekend, the center of the sports universe will be the celebration starting at 1060 West Addison immediately spreading to every block in Chicago that spends its summer days hearing WGN radio describe the games, essentially telling us what kind of mood we will be in the next 16-32 hours until the next first pitch. The celebration will spontaneously spread to all the little communities in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa who look to the city on the Lake as their baseball destiny mostly based on historical connections through minor league franchises associated with the mother ship. But is will also reach all over to the world to all those people and communities who have become a part of the Cubs family through the magic technology of WGN.

This celebration will be loud but respectful, spontaneous but not surprising. It will bring families together, and cause friends who hadn’t seen each other in years to reconnect and ask each other it “they saw the game?” It will last for days and be partly to blamed or the current ecomomic softness but will soon be proven by Nobel Prize winning economists that it was the event to jump start the second tech revolution. People regained their hope for the future and backed that belief up with purchases of HD Tvs and DVR recorders and more baseball collectables and the entire economy just floated upwards like a softly hit Texas league single followed by a gnashing triple in the left field corner that just bounced around a couple of times before being fielded fired home to late to stop 3 runs from scoring.

The Team’s, the sport’s, the economy’s, the country’s attitude and momentum will be forever changed to remind us of how good things have been in this country and how they can be again. The only key is baseball and the only baseball secret is the Cubs finally winning the World Series, here and now. No curse, no cat, no goat, no lovable losers, no college of coaches, no MVPs reduced to plying on a last place team, no fan interference or not, just baseball the way it’s meat to be played, by a team of balanced talent led by a focused, experienced manager and supported by the most loyal fan base of any professional sports franchise in the world.

Once that has happened, we can all of us go back to real life and quit secretly worrying that we had something to do with this drought; not watching the game or watching them or wearing a certain shirt or hat. We have convinced ourselves that this drought somehow is our fault rather than just the vagaries of the game. But that guilt will be burned out of our consciousness when we see the champagne and the W flag at Wrigley and see the 2008 flag flying in the outfield next summer.

This is all going to happen; we will be witness to it and we will always remember it as one of the most satisfying and deserving experiences any of us have had the good fortune to live through.

"The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been . . . baseball. It rules over America like an army of steamrollers." Terrance Mann

Wow. Very Well Written. Maybe you're George Will?

If you’re not already George Will, or other talented writer, maybe you should go into writing and publish a book on this year, the year that was. You can be our voice, the voice of us little kids who had to feel the little defeats that our team, the Chicago National League Ballclub, burned into our psyche, and yet, through all the happiness and pain, we never gave up on baseball, and never gave up on our team.

+1 and recommended!
