If he PHs Ronny early, then he double switches DeRo out and leaves himself with no MI.

Now, he uses his 4th OF early, then double switches out his other CF. I don’t like the idea of Dome playing CF when he is struggling so much with his swing.

and he has hit into 25. Guess who just tied him for the lead in that all important category?

He's 100 points off.

I love D-Lee, but he has Dale Murphy disease. He is substantially worse than the 38 year old version of Fred McGriff we had… and I’m pretty sure that McGriff had technically retired at that point.

…he’s not that much “worse” than he has been throughout his career. I think we were spoiled by his MVP-run in 2005. His career OPS+ is 123, whereas this year it is 112. Don’t forget, he’s a Gold Glove first baseman. I get a bit pissy at all the D.Lee naysayers.

The guy has more plate appearances

than anyone else on the team. He gets more opportunities to hit with men on base than just about anyone else. His previous GIDP high was 18 in 2001, and now he’s got 25. That is significantly more, but let’s be real people. He’s lock-solid at first base – would you rather have another defender @ 1B in a tight game? He’s a field general and one of the best guys on the team. But if you wanna look at stats, give the whole picture, damnit.

Pinch hitting for Lee?

Isn’t he top 5 in league in driving in game-winning runs or whatever that defunct stat was called? It isn’t a late-game clutch issue, let’s not confuse it. The guy just hits a ton of GP and, unfortunately, it is harder to stomach because he is no longer the 30 HR guy he was. I mean his numbers are basically the same as DeRosa’s.

by BeltwayCubsFan on Sep 2, 2008 10:19 PM CDT reply actions

What's worse

Lee pinch hitting for Hoffpauir or Lou leaving Howry in with 3 runs in, 0 outs and 1 on?

by mmancubfan on Sep 2, 2008 10:23 PM CDT up reply actions

He might be.....

But he’s about 25th in the league in RBI’s and has probably 2nd or 3rd most at bats…and it’s not like those at bats are coming w/the bases empty

by kcjones on Sep 2, 2008 10:23 PM CDT up reply actions

He's horrific with 2 outs and RISP.

As in, 51 OPS+ horrific. He’s a shell of the guy we used to have, and frankly, the Cubs need to start thinking about their 2010 1B.

by D98 on Sep 2, 2008 10:23 PM CDT up reply actions

You are correct about Lee's numbers being the same as DeRo's.

The tough part about that statement is that DeRo’s production comes from several different positions that are all more difficult than 1B.

So...the big ? is....

Where do you fit Lee and the Riot in? (I like their bats in the order)

The premise(s) are…Lee doesn’t bat 3rd anymore and the Riot doesn’t play SS anymore…

The best defense is a good offense

by kcjones on Sep 2, 2008 10:28 PM CDT reply actions

At the moment, they're the best options.

Lee should be down in the order. Riot should bat #2 and play SS. He’s having his career year, and his defense isn’t so horrible that a change is necessary.

I think he’s just unlucky with where he’s hitting the ball. He’s hitting them hard…the problem is it’s at people. Give him some time….Lee will turn it around

It's been 2 powerless years.

It’s pretty clear that he’s in an end-of-career decline. I love the guy, but he’s fading in all aspects at this point.

He’s dramatically worse than Fred McGriff was in 2002. And that seriously hurts me to say. But it’s undeniably true.

I can't even communicate with you.

Try replacing Derrek Lee at first? Look at his stats. (new window)

He’s ABOVE his pace for his career averages in R, H, RBI, BB, SO, and AVG. He’s on pace for his career averages in 2B, 3B, OBP, SB, and TB. He’s below his pace for his career averages in HR, SLG, OPS+, and GIDP, with only homers and double plays being real significant.

What the hell do you think you’re getting with Derrek Lee? Hmm? Please share with the group. It fascinates me to hear people bitch about Derrek Lee. His 2005 campaign for MVP was an anomaly, or at least the alignment of the “best” of what D-Lee can do in one season. He’s never hit more than 32 homers or had 100+ RBI sans that 2005 season.

And I haven’t even moved onto his stellar defense. Please. Stop it.
